Not really a problem since I could just swap the characters if I ever want to use it as a game of my own.

>>164312663
Exactly. It has much room for improvement and I think it would be interesting to have a actual remake of it as a 3d game. Also because the music and remixes of it are really good.

>>164328993
You mean the animations? I'll try to fix it a bit later. The gameplay is going to be a bit different since aiming at targets is a little more trickier to do in 3d than in 2d. Also, here's a close up of Quote. I know it's not good, but I'll fix him eventually.

>>
>>164467191
Don't worry, sound is a difficult thing. It's often overlooked, devs always focus on just the coding and the art aspects, but the sound and music of a game is just as big as those other aspects.

I use freesound.org and bfxr to get some placeholder sounds. I have never been able to make good music though, so I try to find some free music online that I can use and just credit them.

2d is fucking shit you have to draw everything by hand (unless you use rendered sprites which is ridiculous too) and it looks like shit and the medium is limited since you can pretty much only do side scroller or birds eye view (both of which you can do with 3d graphics anyway)

>>
>>164470598
>if you have any idea what you're doing
Guess what. That's exactly the reason people use engines aimed at amateurs. Because they are amateurs. They just like want to make gaem, not build an engine that does the same as those already available but worse.
>>
>>164470546
Yet another reason Godot is better than GM.
>>
>>164470578
even AAA games use helmets/masks or cartoony faces a lot, and you can use various techniques like scanning actual faces and doing mocap animations, if you get decent skin and eyes etc (doesn't even have to be realistic) you should be fine
>>
>>164470598
>all the shit tier "game engines" are jewing you big league

So which are the "game engines" that are not shit tier?
>>
>>164470779
the "top-tier" publicly available engines like UE4, cryengine, and to some extent unity can have their uses, like if you just want some generic shooter game or something, that's what those engines are made for, but things like game maker and rpg maker are super amateur and not for serious game dev studios
>>
>>164470779
In OpenGL.

Let's suppose I have an Array Texture with 128 layers, and I want to make it bigger. What's the best way?

Do I need to create a new Array Texture of 257 layers (for example), copy all the layers from the old Array Texture to the new one, and delete the old one?

Seems potentially slow. Is there anything better?

To be fair, organizing the data in a vector doesn't matter much. There's not much difference between object having x and y and object having a vector that has x and y, especially for simple games that GM is good at. IIRC they still have stuff like lerp and stuff, so it doesn't hurt at all. At that point it's just preference, like preferring sameline bracket to newline bracket. Touting your preference as absolute is a sign of OCD btw.

>>

This is true. But sadly has nothing to do with 2d games allegedly being made with 3d engines.
>>
>>164471557
>engine you use
>>
>>164471557
I've written my own engine a few times.

Just because your engine uses the GPU to render, does not make it a 3d engine.
>>
>>164471624
Oh I'm not him, nor was I implying that, but many (most?) of the popular engines nowadays, particually if they have support for both 2D and 3D, tend to have 2D modes that involve actually doing things in 3D and masking it in 2D. Examples of this that I've extensively used are unity and xna/monogame. If the engine is pure 2D though then it likely does not do that though.
>>
>>164471259
I might have believed you if I didn't know anything 3D requires knowledge of a bunch of different and complex techniques. Just look at the polycount wiki for fucks sake

I'm getting a bit of a sega wibe from this which is what I need for my game. I've been having some trouble arranging my music. I think its a timing thing. I've also been having issues with doing effects and picking the right drum sounds. I'm using deflemask to make sega megadrive / genesis music. I mostly pick samples and instruments from games I like. So far I've mostly been doing simple covers but its a lot of work for me. Also feel like I should make more progress with it before demoday 12 but progress is really slow.

I have some good inspirations for the music I'd like to put in the game in case someone's willing to help me with the music; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogjrWqHuoMM

It's still annoying as fuck to do when you do it often and if your game is non trivial, basic vector operations are really useful.
It's why I hate languages like Java where you can't do that and have to use functions and ugly chaining.
a.add(b).add(c) etc

I know, but those bugs aren't typically too hard to stamp out, especially if you know how to actually debug. It's a rarity if you have a serious problem. They even wanted to put that game on the app stores, but I told them that there's no way in hell anyone would pay for that, and I was not going to keep working on it.

They are nice guys, but if I'm going to team up with someone I need them to bring something other than ideas to the table.

Both I guess. The pilot is supposed to be weak, but because of the smaller size, she can fit in tight places and she's lots harder for enemies to notice. Basically you will only be using the pilot to do stuff you cant do with your mecha, like puzzles. The enemies will deal shittons of more damage to the pilot than to mecha, I just haven't got to balancing stuff because I'm just working on features.

>>164483740
I'm using shader to change the displayed palette, which I can easily control.

>>164483820
Mecha or the pilot? The mecha can fly which might make it look weird since there's no graphics for that yet and I haven't come up with idea how to do it in a way it's very easy to do more bullet-hell kind of fights with mecha (like itano circus shit).

Scam? How so? When I asked around before, the only devs that had anything negative to say about them were either devs that had unsellable games (which to be fair BMS shouldn't have picked them up in the first place) or just a dev being upset that a publisher is trying to get as many sales as possible for his game (which is unreasonable if you ask me) Did something else happen beyond just following a lot of people?

I was actually talking about VOTSdev, I talk with him daily. He complained a lot for them doing what they said they'd do in their contract. He also didn't make any use of their other services. In other words it doesn't sound like he actually read nor asked about what he was getting into, but I suppose it's also fair to expect BMS to actually explain all their services to you on time of contract signing...

>>164488701
Are you talking about the twitter bot spam thing? Because yeah that shit's sketchy, and maybe I'm too old, but is twitter really even relevant? The free exposure on tumblr is nice enough at least..

Also I just wanted to mention that I have no intention of actually defending BMS, I just want to arrive at the truth, because a lot of shit gets said, you know? Even doing my research on them previously I found it difficult to find substantial claims against them. Most of the negative stuff was mostly just reddit posts of people complaining that their terrible looking game didn't sell, and blaming it on them, which I don't think it's fair to blame them for your own unreasonable expectations.

It's quite simple really. They're pretending to be a publisher when they're not. You give them a large publisher cut of everything, and they give you fuckall because they're not a real publisher and they don't have any of the resources required to be one.

It's not illegal or anything, but it's dishonest as fuck.

over the centuries people have devised methods and techniques to come up with permutations of sounds which human beings are likely to like, good on your for recognising that.

that still doesn't mean that the set A* ,which contains every possible permutation of the elements of set A, which contains every possible sound which can be made in the universe, isn't a superset of the set A_HUMAN where A_HUMAN contains every possible permutation of elements yielded by applying techniques and methods devised for the creation of music to the set A

human can create good music using techniques and methods they've come up with over the years, that's obviously true.

>>
>>164489873
i know people will tell you otherwise, but i think this is the time you need to consider scope and complexity of tools in relation to your current skill

for example, if you're trying to learn unity and are having issues, maybe it's time to give something simpler a try like GMS or C2 or literally anything that'll let you get something out quickly.

sometimes its literally all about just getting something out to be proud of it, even if it is super simple and made with simple tools

I like Godot but man

A for loop

for n in range(0, 0xFFFFFFF)

for n in range(0, 0xFFFF)
is much faster

for n in range(0, 0x7FFFFFF)
doesn't even work ("function range doesn't exist")

Literally all I wanted was some normal way to have an infinite +1 loop in one line but you can't
for (i++;;);
but no
The language only has 4 meaningful words: if, while, for, else
you can't assign inside expression
you can't even iterate negatively
you have to iterate positively and then take the negative

Right now you enter levels using stairs and come back to the same room. The symbols on the ground would replace the stairs of the level stairs you just came back from and then you would save/enable them through resting (zZz) on them. This would in turn open another set of stairs to another level close by - which in the .webm is skipped and turned into the circles for demons purposes. The idea is that in the end you would summon something to fight in the room you've been using to access levels.

I get that. Limitations also cause you to be creative, intentionally or not. My game has a horrifically low internal resolution (410 x 240 or something like that iirc) so I have to get really creative with my GUI, which may or may not have worked. It's funny how after playtesting you really see what needs to be changed.

Anyway the other anon was right, it's a bit of a pain to have to switch the depth-movement after being hit and pushed on the other lane, kind of kills the game momentum so I'll keep the battle on the first plan.
I'm keeping the background though, I definitely want it to be used for crafting tables and such or even enemies sneaking using that.

I also think I've reached the limit of what I can do with those stock assets, there are just not enough tiles to work with now that I have to add content. I wonder what kind of programmer-art I can think of for that?

That being said I don't have plans to make another full terarria/minecraft clone. I just put that "possibility" in there so that you have something else to do than killing mobs if you feel like it.

You can't do any of that.
You have to write

while(1):
i += 1

like a fucking idiot

Example: Iterating an array, but the contents of the array determine how many items you have to insert during the iteration.

Anyway, the problem is this, the documentation is misleading

https://godot.readthedocs.io/en/stable/reference/gdscript.html

>for i in range(2,8,2):
> statement # similar to [2, 4, 6] but does not allocate an array

What does "does not allocate an array" mean if not "this translates to a normal C++" loop.

Actually range() does do something stupid, otherwise there is no explanation why range(0, 0x7FFF) is fast and range(0xFFFFFF) is slow.

My minimal example
for n in range(0, 0xFFFFFF):
print(n)
if n + 1 == 20000:
break
Remove 2 F's and it's way faster

Yeah, well for the time being I'm using stun-stagger system. If you look at the slime you can see that he'll be pushed pack every 4-5 hits or so.

Though the castlevania games are all about learning the enemy patterns so I'm going for that. Most enemies just get killed in 2 or 3 hits in the DS games anyway. You usually bother with patterns only on bosses or if you want to go through the same area multiple times without taking damage.

Basically, it's a turn-based survival horror in which players try to stop a horrible elder god from awakening. It's set in late 80s/early 90s Japan and incorporates 1bit aesthetics of old Macintosh computers. I've got a proof of concept pre-alpha demo at https://panstas.itch.io/world-of-horror

It's just a fast-paced version of the old castlevania.
Rather than whipping once and getting out of range you get the ability to attack multiple times. So if you know the pattern you can dispatch enemies more efficiently.

it's a 'slippy map' like google maps uses. The elevation data is 'SRTM v4.1', which is a large height map. You use GDAL to render the heightmap into pretty mountains, then do some photoshop work. Feed that into mapnik to overlay the cities and country borders and split the whole map up into tiles.
If any of the underlying data changes, rerender affected tiles.
Then you implement a slippy map for ur gaem, project the units from 3d onto the map and you are good to go.

I'm setting up a server to handle the map shit now...lots of data. the client can handle local data changes since it will be < 0.001% of the world prob. and i'll ship a copy of mapnik to help with that.
OSM wiki has details.

His statement was half true. Maybe she is a good character, but that design in itself isn't very special or memorable. A lot of other characters can stand out and are better designed, although a well-done character is more than their appearance, more about implementation. Of course it's easier to bait good reactions and forgiveness by making them anime and waifu-bait/lewd.

so 2 loops then, maybe something like this?

for(int y = -1; y < 2; y++) {
for(int x = -1; x < 2; x++) {
if (x == 0 and y == 0) { continue; }
var chunk = instance_create(cX + x, cY + y, oChunk);
worldGrid[# chunkx + x, chunky + y] = chunk;
}
}

multiply the x and y by your conversion stuff up the top, and consider putting that in a 'screen2worldGrid' function.
I don't use that language so not 100% sure on how the worldgrid and chunks are organised or addressed.

Liberals are more likely to be involved in film and art schools, making them 1,000x more likely to make a documentary on indie game dev. The first thing they gravitate to are the most hipsterish, faggoty abominable people in the "indie scene" because it's what they're attracted to and identify with.

Indie Game: The Movie was created before indie game devs started trying to be "personalities" and get noticed for being transexual or being loud on twitter.

If you want to get into making games and need practice but only have ideas beyond your scope, then look through some arcade games list, it could be through a playlist on youtube like this one for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6I-4CcKAXo&list=PLA442553B9678C649 , until you find one that you like and then proceed to recreate that game in your engine/framework/language of choice. And the overwhelming majority of that progress is cheesecake shots of an underage, panting male dog rather than actual gameplay. Big fuckin' whoop. And what little gameplay the game does have is ripped off of La-Mulana (but we say ripped off of Maze of Galious to pretend that the game has a pedigree).

Furry is garbage. You only like it because you can't relate to real people. Get over it.

from what i've seen, people laugh at devs trying to make grid-based tactical rpgs, so I'm guessing there's something behind it like repeated failed attempts by a particular dev or another version of the unity cube

Last progress for today:
>got flying controls feel good
>improved the enemy mecha AI but it still needs work
>improved the pilot sprites a bit, gave better walking animation and small detail.
>tweaked the positions where the bullets are spawned

Hopefully I'll get saving and menus work tomorrow.

>>164515821
You can get their weapons at least. I haven't decided yet how complex the customization will be.
>>
>>164515675
Fuck.

I think the player movement needs to be tweaked slightly to have more weight to it, moving Jason out of the tank in Blaster Master had him build a little momentum when he started scurrying around, I also noticed in a previous video of yours, when your little heroine went prone and fired, her bulllets all hit the ground, you may want to adjust that.

Other than that, damn son, you're doin good, nice touch with making the mech's arm cannon rattle around while firing too, I like that
>>
>>164516349
I was about to comment to them that I hate that cannon wiggle. With all the NES Blaster Master sprites that are in there it looks really uncanny.
>>

>>164516789
Maybe he could have a more authentic looking recoil animation?

I think it'd be cool if the cannon ejected little shells that dissipate quickly

fucked around and gimp and made new bullet fx for homing gun, then tried them on the shotgun where they look better IMO. still need muzzle fx and other things to make it look more impressive

anyway i have a rough outline for the game so i dont get pulled into the abyss that is feature creep, the hard part now is ironing out specifics
>>
>>164517082
I'm pretty sure I've seen NES games that have had guns that eject shell casings when firing.
>>
>>164490978

>>
>>164515489
You mean going the hatred route?

I rather make a game that is fun than offensive, even though I know that your idea would give the game a lot of free press.
>>
>>164516349
>I think the player movement needs to be tweaked slightly to have more weight to it
I know it needs tweaking. Will work on it.

>I also noticed in a previous video of yours, when your little heroine went prone and fired, her bulllets all hit the ground, you may want to adjust that.
I adjusted that. Not ALL bullets hit the ground, but since there's bit spread on guns (the pilot and the mecha will have several equippable weapons and the spreads will vary), most did. So now when in prone the bullets goes straight.

>>164516789
I kinda like it. It's only on the mecha currently because I wanted to just try how it would look.

>>164516894
It's possible, but I seriously have been working on this like 3 days so I haven't had time to do everything.

>>164517082
>>164517215
I'm not completely following the limitations on NES (why would I? I'd learn to make actual NES games or hacks if I wanted to). I just like the aesthetics and I'm not artfag so I thought it could be fun.

What's wrong with making youtuber bait? It's the best free marketing you can get on the internet. Once you're popular enough your games will have a momentum of their own and you can just release your stuff without worrying about all that.
>>
>>164514601
>people laugh at devs trying to make grid-based tactical rpgs
I haven't seen that
but, you shouldn't make such a game because the the scope is already too big before you've even started
>>
>>164517529
go away nidhogg dev nobody likes the new look
>>
>>164517553
This is true. I can do turns, pathfinding on the grid, attacks, etc, but in order to make something worthwhile or up to my expectations it would be herculean to do it all.
>>
>>164517485
I'm trying to recall if there were any NES games that had casings, I mean obviously the limitations of NES hardware it'd inflict slowdown pretty bad unless the sprites were small and short lived as all hell.

Obviously there's a few SNES games that've pulled it off, and I coulda sworn I seen an NES game that had such a visual feature.
>>
>>164517659
I wish... I haven't actually made anything noteworthy

There were day-one Deadbolt videos on YouTube. And it sold 40k+ copies according to Steamspy. That's good enough for me.
>>
>>164518015
>That's good enough for me.
that wont happen for you unless your previous game also sold over a million copies
>>
>>164517678

>>
you have to approach it as making design decisions that make your game more interesting and enjoyable to watch and comment on. there's nothing wrong with this. "youtuber bait" (aka generic gimmicks that youtubers latch onto) is like the low hanging fruit version of this. also youtube views ain't worth shit. depending on the game/audience millions of views wouldn't get you 20 sales.
>>
>>164518091
If my last game sold over a million then I'm already set for life anyway.
