Added more lighting to the level. You can now turn off each light on and off independently of the room. Sources like TV don't affect that, but if you break the TV then the light will flicker from electricity.

Also I threw a ball in the kids face, because it's fun.

How are you doing it thus far? If the hands are going to be attached to a humanoid arm then I'd make the arm function like a piston that bends and straightens according to the degree of extension of the hand/the hand's distance from its minimum extension. Attaching the end of the forearm to the hand, and attaching the shoulder of the upper arm to...whatever it's going to attach to, and then having them meet at a point on a line that's equidistant from both the hand and attachment point of the shoulder, only perpendicularly offset by how close the hand is to the shoulder at any given time (hand is close to shoulder, elbow attachment point moves further away from the line and makes the arm bend "realistically".

If you're doing actual tentacles and stuff then that's more complicated and probably out of my league.

Why are few of you so supportive?

I feel as if, because some people are being productive and actually making their 'dreams', others, who lack the skills and commitment simply come here to spew shit and hope it has impact.

Hopefully I can finally do some proper rain erosion and water simulation now.

Kind of like multiplayer Spore's creature stage, if the creature's viability would have actually mattered, mixed with SimEarth.
Players will be trying to terraform a barren planet into a flourishing ecosystem, and making sure their creations will dominate.
You won't be controlling any creatures yourself, but you'll be designing their body and behaviour and hoping to not be wiped out by other player's creatures.

It's a sucky mechanic. Overhealth enemies and/or ramp their movespeed. Maybe do one buff for each colour, or just the damage for one colour.
It'll be difficult to make anything above a very basic and simple level without making a level that just feels horrible to play, especially if you're going to have better enemies later on.

Well, someone linked this:

asstr DOTORG SLASH files SLASH Authors SLASH HotClub SLASH www SLASH kindergarten_manager DOT html

in another thread. What kind of concepts from it would you like to see in the game? I was thinking maybe if you have multiple girls in a cell, they could get in trouble and you'd want to scold them or else face some sort of disobedience increase risk. The leveling up oral/anal/vaginal stuff I had already planned (which was expressed in that sexSkill array in Soul before).

Although I was thinking about having general submissive/dominant sex skills, then those would get added or multiplied with hole-specific (or position?) to get how well she would perform something.

For feeding/looking after the lolis, maybe I could allow any captive adults (or lolis above x age/something) do that? That way the lolis that grow up would still serve a purpose beyond breeding cows. (same with any adults you kidnap).

Anyone good with shaders here?

I'm thinking about making a paint program that makes heavy use of OpenGL.

I'm wondering are there good potential ways of doing a flood fill using a shader?

What about expanding the edges of something.. like if a sent a b&w texture with a black blob in it to the GPU, could i make it expand the edges by 20px or so pretty efficiently?

Not that guy but appending a "worldspeed" variable of your own making to every rate in the game achieves the slow-mo effect, i.e. speed = 5/worldspeed

Changing worldspeed in that case to, let's say, .5 would (obviously) halve the speed of movement. If you do that with everything then you can change the speed of the game simply by changing that variable. You can make your own alarms by making a variable that decrements every frame, and can make them count down at the worldspeed using the same technique.

That guy you replied to mentioned delta time, I don't know whether he was describing the actual built in function or what I'm describing. If he meant the function then I have no idea what he had in mind, but I've used what I described and it works.

I just looked into it. I stay with my statement because as long as your not programming for the game boy color you really shoudn't give a fuck. Just make your game. If you really want to throw around with rendering methods, do this after finishing your game. This goes beyond premature optimization.
>>
>>164422075
Yeah, when I was still into generation and stuff really had to focus. People probably don't realize but getting the whole terarria/generation+equipment stuff was really hard to do.
But I've been here since the very beginning of lolivania and I want to see it as much as you do or did, can't blame you for giving up on that after all this time

For the spyro game though I thought it'd be better for you to get a programmer that already knows his way around that kind of game, I'm more of an arcade/action-rp-ish game coder like I said, which is why I like both the castlevania or your 3D cutie when she had her fighting stance.

I adore that style for its simplicity in pixel art. It uses detailed characters, but does not bother with complex shading, just a really nice art style.

I wish we had more pixel games like this.

Anyone have a recommendation for a good "Unity for programmers" course? I work as a programmer and C# is easy to me, so all these courses that basically just lay out the fundamentals of coding and then have a little bit on how to hack together a text adventure or something in it are useless to me. I want to make a VR game, though, and Unity seems like a good platform to learn for that, so if anyone has any resource recommendations I'd like to hear about them.

Use more generic names (to avoid copyright) and don't implement more than one type of gun. (ie. don't have 4 assault rifles)

- USP can just be called Pistol
- PP 200 can just be called Submachine Gun
- M1014 can be called Semi-automatic Shotgun
etc etc.

>>
>>164423102
Singletons serve two purposes. The first is to be global. While you shouldn't be using globals, if you really need/want one, just use a global. The second is to only allow one instance of the class to ever be made. This is useful, but at the same time, if you only want one of something, it really shouldn't be a class at all. Classes are blueprints so that you can make many of the same thing, just with different parameters.

So they're bad for the same reasons globals are bad and they're useless either way.

Flood fill is not something that lends itself well to shaders. I mean, theoretically, the frontier can be expanded entirely in parallel, but there's too much branching involved for it to be a real gain, probably.

With projectiles at that speed/distance you really shouldn't take damage from wrong shots, just have them be ineffective. Having special enemies that counter when shot wrong, or a boss that uses the self-damage mechanic in an environment that suits it would be better.

If they're immutable (constants), they're fine. When they're mutable, they pose a lot of problems. First of all, anything can modify them, so you can easily run into issues where you weren't able to keep track of every single occurrence where a global is modified and so a new line of code modifying it can introduce bizarre bugs. Throw in multithreading and other programmers (remember, future you is an "other") and you've got a recipe for disaster.

Passing dependencies around lessens the potential impact of side effects (reduces it entirely if you pass around immutables and make new versions instead of mutating) and is also valuable documentation because if you didn't pass X into Y, you know that Y can't change X itself or be affected by changes to X.

Thanks for replying. It's because I was thinking that most people tend to pirate software, so I was thinking of it from the point of where people try to make stuff entirely from free software because they think they might be detected in some way by using pirated software.

So for example, you'd make something using an Autodesk product, Photoshop -- you name it, but then credit yourself as using the open-source version of each of those programs, nobody would know any wiser.

But I managed to forget there's always people who just prefer or their computers can better handle the open-source/freeware version of those softwares, I think I'm just getting myself confused.

How the hell did you manage that? The game crashing would make since, maybe it was stuck in an infinite loop. But your whole PC shouldn't have crashed.

In Unity, let's say I've got a shit ton of doors in a scene and they're all openable and therefore all need to play door-open and door-close sounds.
Each door has a script on it that handles the opening and closing and has two audioclip references
I know that, in memory, there are only those two audioclips. But is having a ton of references to the same two clips inefficient, or does it make no difference how many references to them there are?

I think you can export your Godot game as an HTML5 applet sort of thing but I don't know how good it is. I think Unity and UE4 also allow you to make HTML5 games, but it might be easier to just make your own engine. Read an HTML5 tutorial or something.

Anyway mobile games are the present and the future, I don't think web games are ever going to catch on when everything will always run faster outside of a browser.

Eh, kind of.

Running with Android means alot of hoops a program automatically goes through which bogs it down much more than its specs would handle.

Mobile platforms are good about resource management but that's because it automatically terminates background processes when it needs more.

This is why mobile apps are so small, keep power consumption and resource consumption down or it won't fly. Also why 3d sucks on mobile as well.

But the market is huge. Everyone has a phone sonar means everyone is a potential buyer. Keep in mind the paradigm is free. Even asking for a cent drops your potential consumers into a single percentage.

Although I could be completely wrong. I only read up on this stuff from dated programming books.

It's an actual thing, though.
The Crash Bandicoot devs called their first Crash game Sonic's Ass during early development, because they were struggling with the fact that moving to 3D meant placing the camera behind the character, which would make it hard to emote and generally to make it look nice.

Dude, I love those games.

>>
>>164445876
Not that any of this is implemented, but the idea was never to take off from the runway. It's only there for landing in a hurry, as slamming down on the deck is faster than doing a nice hovering landing. When launching, you either get thrown out the side of the ship, or fly out of some kind of launch tube. Something like that. Depends on the design of whatever you're launching from.

There's no point to using a runway in space to take off. Landing is pushing it as well desu, but I'm willing to make that concession because I think it's >fun and interesting.

If this was a game and you needed to land to rearm/repair mid-mission you would:

>land on runway or pad or wherever
>taxi to some elevator area that takes you below deck
>loadout screen below deck to adjust loadout or just re-arm
>launch from launch tube/hangar/whatever and continue mission

That's all just me ideaguying though. As I said, none of that aside from landing is implementing.

I need a bit of advice. I've just finished enough tutorials to make me want to vomit and I feel I'm finally ready to dive into trying to make something in Unity.

First problem is that I'm not sure how I should be moving the character. Every tutorial I've used has told me to use AddForce to push the character around, but I've just found out about the built in character controller.

Basically what I'm trying to ask is should I try to handle character movement through physics or just use the built in character controller?
>>
>>164446616
>as slamming down on the deck is faster than doing a nice hovering landing
It's also easier if the carrier is moving or turning in any way, as I found out after finally implementing a carrier for me to land on that flies on its own. It's the difference between trying to hold your position and smoothly come down on something that's moving/turning in 3 dimensions, versus just flying into the deck at speed.
>>
>>164446837
Use the built in one for now, but know that it's dogshit for a million reasons, and you need to replace it for a real project. Don't get bogged down in details like that yet, though! Focus on making some gameplay.

depends on the game
most indie games don't need physics at all, and in those cases you shouldn't be using physics to move the character

There is no proper way. In general, if you don't need physics, a controller that responds directly to the player's inputs is more responsive. Unity's controller does this, but it has other problems.

If your game gets to the point where you need a custom controller, you'll know. Everything else in your game will be so good, people will complain about the controller

I might consider doing one at some point, but most of the actual modeling of the meshes is pretty simple stuff, and I'm still not very good at animation.
I have figured out some pretty neat techniques for texturing and UV unwrapping, though.

Why do u AA only some of ur shit?
>>
>>164448597
IIRC it directly moves the transform of a non-kinematic rigidbody, which during the fixed update the engine will try to solve the physics of

the result when running towards collision is the player collides with it a bit and then the physics system realizes something is wrong and shoves it back out. however sometimes it will either overshoot the collision entirely or the physics system decides to shove it out in a different direction than the developer intended

as an aside pushing it with forces generally would not have this problem as long as its set to continuous dynamic and isnt going very fast but then the character usually controls like shit and bounces all over the place

You could always try 3D scultping instead.
Here's one of the first 3D models I made in Zbrush, back in highschool, long before I had tried 2D or lowpoly.
It's very intuitive, and you can bake the high detail down to a simplified lowpoly mesh, and then just add colours, define some edges with darkening/highlights, and maybe paste some generic texture patterns (cloth, scales, etc.).
That way you avoid the problem of having to learn 2D at all.
And automatic retopology is pretty okay these days (back when I made this, I just ragequit after I learned that all my models were useless for video games because of the high polycount, and never looked back).

Most developers apply the instantaneous velocity measured at the current frame over the entire duration of the previous frame, when for linear velocity the actual velocity to be used should be the average. This results in some potentially bad framerate dependency.

Another topic on this is using a seperate acceleration value for approaching stopping, which introduces even more complication especially from crossing over zero on the axis without introducing even more framerate dependancy.

I think for many modern developers these topics are too advanced and they never consider them. Part of this though is that older games ran on fixed framerates and did not have to worry about the added instability of attempting framerate independancy.

This is really not good. The melody has so much dissonance it sounds more like random notes rather than a thought-out tune, and the time signature (while fine in itself) is hard to follow because of the melody's wonkiness.
You should have a scale in mind when you're writing simple music. At this stage you might benefit from simply following one of those paint-by-numbers music theory guides you can find on google. Take a look at the circle of fifths too if you like. Use this to help you understand what makes a good song sound good, and hopefully train yourself to eventually know innately what sounds good.

Should I tell them how much I loved their game, pretend like I don't know them, or just don't interact with them at all. No nothing tangible yet. Only an idea. Just a very character driven story about two female lovers living together and exploring each of there characters. You can choose to play through the perspective of either girl. Obviously things will differ based on who you chose, like perspectives on issues and how they feel as well as events. There's more too it than that but I don't really want to give all of it away.

I got the flame stoked in me by this artist. It would be something close to what you see here but not quite as violent.

Unity isn't bad but why use it over GameMaker if you're a beginner?

I'm using Unity for 2D myself, but it's not exactly a shmup or metroidvania. My game is coming out richer for it (shaders, ECS, etc., and I recently managed to offload some AI shit to the GPU which I can't see happening in GM.) That said, I started off with GM and can see how the vast majority of genre clones would be easier in GM.

I think calculus is too much, it's just a bunch of hacks to make it behave visually like I wanted it to

there are 2 parts to this, rotation of the plane around the up axis and the wobble

the wobble is simple and the most important part, I modeled the plane on a slant so that maximum wobble would be at scale 1 or -1 with scale 0 making it a flat surface

the inertia effect is achieved by using a PID controller, badly tuned on purpose so that it would take some time to settle

No problem anon. It's actually not the first time I do this kind of stuff in here. People post melodies and say they are disappointed and that they suck. You just need more instruments, maybe change the tempo to give it a certain feeling ( like here it seriously sounds like a music you'd find in Zelda or something ) and there you go, you just need to find little variations that make your music good.

I'd love to produce music for you guys, but if people want to learn how to make music, I can teach some of you too.

It's called Harmonization. In an orchestra ( here, with multiple tracks ) there are parts that define the song, and parts that complete the song. For example, with anon's example, I took his melody here >http://vocaroo.com/i/s1o3MhthEK7M< as a song definer with two instruments. The rest is there to make the melody feel more "complete", with a bassline, alternate melody, and little kicks. This stuff is very boring on paper, but if you search for " Classical Harmony " you will find stuff to read.

>>164460432
Without trying to sound pretentious I think that music is literally the domain where I feel in total power because I see life as a set of musics and for me it's easy to visualize something I want to do and put it directly into sound. Also, I have the perfect pitch so that helps. Thanks for the compliment anon!

>>164460453
The most important part is to let your brain go. Have a simple melody and just complete it step by step. It doesn't have to be an insane and complicated melody: Megalovania is always the same leadline with slight variation and all the instruments are here to reinforce the melody. Okay I'm back.

I like what you're trying to do but there's a major problem with the rythm of your songs. When you build a song, you HAVE to have a sort of " rythm box " going, something that always have the same rythm through your track.

Here your bassline doesn't fill that role and your drums don't feel that role ( Kick -> Snare is the best way to do this ). You need to get one of these going because sometimes it's hard to concentrate on your track because of that.

Also, I notice that some of your hi-hats ( notably the maracas ) is off-beat so this contributes greatly to the confusion of the problem above.

But cool idea, I approve!

I love this! This is a nice idea. If it was me, I'd give it more of a " chillout " feel by making a sort of shift to a minor seventh chord on the 7th measure somewhere, rather than one all-happy song but that's maybe what you want so I won't say anything about that.

Though I'd definitely make your hats, congs or whatever a bit less loud because I hate the impression they're a bit over the top of your song. Other than that, I can definitely see this in a level selection or anything of that sort! Good job anon.

Like having them not realizing that they have been walking the same 10 inch strip of land for 10 mins? (if it's side scroll?)

I guess I would make like 5 variations of the same kind of land and use them sparingly. Like, have a main one that's really normal with nothing that really catches the eye. Then have 4 variants where you add a little something to it...?
(I haven't actually tried that, it's just a guess. I'm not sure if the little extra would actually draw attention to the fact that it is a repeating pattern. unless you only use it once maybe.)

Hmm, then try using the repeating pattern technique (not just for line alignment, but it helps you balance it.). Then try doing what I suggested: make a generic block (very simple), make a bunch of blocks where you use the generic block but add small details and switch things up slightly (the more you make, the less "repeating" it will seem), use the more obvious variants less than the slight variants, when you're placing them use the blocks randomly to try to give it a more organic feel.

That's the best I can suggest. Maybe you can try it for now until a pixel tutorial comes out.

I can definitely see a pattern of creation here: all happy music that would go well in a selection screen or normal dialog time.

Again, I think your biggest point here is harmonization. I'm simply in love with how the slap bass and the drums respond to each others. This is the kind of thing that gets me stuck on repeat on a song haha.

If I'd dare to say anything, I think that the instruments alone are " too dry ". Seems like some of the instruments were taken out of a pack and left unchanged, but all of that is a bit forgotten when you're nailing the harmonization and rythm so well.

I'm not a huge fan of that type of track but you got me hooked anon. If you wish to go further down that style it's putting the emphasis on the bass and drums because it's what sets the happy tone compared to a more melancolic track, where the melody or pad would take the lead.

----[ Recap ]----
Game: Tyranny 3000
Dev: Rasputin
Tools: Unity
Holidays: Rudolf please

Progress:
+it's technically a game, with win and fail states
+ship has mouse control
+enemies you can shoot
+enemies kill you if you touch them
+you can win by getting to the end
+I've actually done some coding myself and it works!

-hoping to get enemy movement by demo day
-and possibly even a health system instead of one hit kills
-possibly placeholder sound effects
-I have more work at work and am even more tired when i come home now
-get a lot of sex and dates on weekends
