It's pretty much the only T1 pick for DDs. And even then it's just massively underwhelming compared to the old BFT. Meanwhile, BBs and CAs get the double plane skill which is at least fairly decent, and a nice alternative that allows them to skip Vigilance.

The skill rework is just a way for WG to nerf all DDs regardless of nation or premium status.

Chances are, the enemy CV is way worse than me. As the majority of CVs are at T5. If that makes them quit playing CV, all the better.

As for the few good ones, I may not be able to fully shut them down for sure. But I can slow them down to a crawl, make their time harder than if they had full reign to sealclub over the low tiers, and hurt their chances of carrying the late game by depleting their plane reserves through the game.

You can say all you want "it doesnt affect me" or "I can work my way around them". But I'm not a stupid AS player. I know my way around strike CVs, I know the workarounds. And I'm not gonna let you pass. You ARE going to be affected, and have your damage and influence severely reduced for that match. And that's all the more worth to me.

When I play Taiho I scout and spot for our DDs, take out enemy DDs, put fighters on top of friendly BBs who look like they're going to be focused, scout the CV etc etc, then triple stack some bluelining Bisko for all his health if I get the chance. Zao's range with the standard build is 18.8km, and you only get spotted after shooting at 15.8km, giving you a huge stealthfire window (stealth range without firing is 9.7). Thing is though, I don't even take advantage of it on mine as much as you can because the ship is good even before you consider that advantage and I like to get closer.
If you're decent at cruisers you really shouldn't have to worry, there are plenty of cruisers which are kind of suffering right now, but the Zao is certainly not one of them. Hell I legitimately feel like I'm harder to kill in my Zao than my Hotel just because while she's obviously not as tanky she just has more tools to deal with stuff.

Torps are really not your focus in the Zao, and it's not the range that's a problem for her anyway but her torp angles. The other IJN CAs might not be able to launch forward, but she can't launch behind her for while she's kiting like they can, you pretty much have to be broadside. They're mostly just for ambushes and stuff rushing you.
I'd give up all the torps and slightly better range in the world though for how much better her firepower is. As well as her survivability, which for cruisers is quite good, even if you're not sitting at max range all game. She really is an enjoyable upgrade, if you like the Ibuki you'll love the Zao.

The problem is that this is the only thing Zao erally shines at.

If you try pushing caps with a Zao you will more often than not end up dead for very little gain, which doesn't help you or your team.
You absolutely cannot take hits, your torp angles are so bad that words cannot describe it and they only have 8 km range.
Seriously, who thought that going up a tier should be a downgrade?
Your gun angles mean that you have to expose your broadside to even use all your guns, whcih means death at short or medium ranges.

But the ship absolutely excels at roasting baBBies and being a Klingon warbird, so that's what you do.


If you want to go and support/push caps, get a Dank Meme. You can go bow in, and will not simply get citpenned 100% of the time, and your AP actually pens other crusiers.
With 6 sec reload and radar you can fuck up any DD.

If you wantto do general cruiser things, Hindenburg is your best bet, but this is a case of jack of all trades, master of none.
