Should I get my first class to 50 or 60 first before going into gathering/crafting?

So, I just started playing XIV. I'm a few hours in at level 6 as a pugilist - aim to eventually play ninja. I ended up choosing the "Lamia" server/world as there wasn't many choices. Is this considered a low population world? Should I restart and try to get onto a different world?

If you want to surround yourself with ample amounts of people, an active market, a ton of (reputable) FCs/Linkshells etc. then Lamia might be fairly quiet.

However, they're introducing cross-server PF in 3.5 so you won't really have an issue when it comes to having nobody to run content with.

Your gathering and crafting classes can only be as high level as your combat class.
Generally, get to 50, unlock Ixal daily quests and use your leve allowances to level gathering to 50.
While you do your ixal dailies and wait for more leve allowances, just level your combat jobs.

I really don't know where this blue mage meme started but blue mage wouldn't work that well in a game like 14 where the open world lack variety and how the combat system is, besides the fact no one even asked for it. Everyone has been most vocal for jobs such as RDM and SAM

Where they go from here depends a lot on where they put RDM and what its primary stat is (which could very well not be INT, despite its classification as Ranged Magical DPS.

They could put RDM into Casting, but another possibility could be them running off of DEX and using Scouting gear. Samurai, should it be classed as a DPS would likely fall under Maiming. Striking could inevitably be shared with any number of additional close-quarters DPS jobs in the future, so that's no big deal.

The only reason I suggest RDM could be DEX though is because I'm not sure there's even another job out there that could possibly take the Scouting subrole, since THF is very much off the table.

How do you unlock floors 101-200 of POTD? I'm getting mixed messages that you can do 1-50 with a fixed party and not die to unlock it or 51-100, but most posts online indicate its only the latter that works

Correct, just like always. Red Mage having a rapier doesn't change that. It's primarily a caster that goes into melee range, not the reverse. The reverse would be Mystic Knight, which would be Strength or Vitality in this game. Red Mage will be Intelligence.

I'm pretty sure you have to do 51-100 with a fixed party and then you have to do 101-200 with a fixed party as well.
If you don't have any friends that want to spend hours doing it, try making a PF for that.

as long as you have a job leveled higher than the one you're getting experience on, you'll be getting the armory bonus.

No. Read the tooltips. That's not how abilities work. Strength MAY effect your auto-attacks (depends whether they have ranged or melee autos) but your skills will work purely off of your spell (or for arguments sake, attack) power. Even though tanks for example can use str or vit, they still gain the exact same stat for getting both.

"Melee" attacks a.k.a long animations on RDM will be scaled off of INT and if they're based on your STR instead, they'll just make them have high potency like PLD's heal spell.

I imagine if it were a tank it'd compliment Paladin to a degree, blunt weapons tend to be a source of INT down effects in these sorts of games. So it'd be a way to have a PLD/OT comp in magic heavy fights.
It could always be a DPS though, but it's harder to imagine. Viking's been all but rolled into Warrior, and Engineer has no reason to exist with Machinist around. Geomancer is all I can think of and I'd be a-okay with that.
