The game of the thing you just made is completely different from CS, because you made it 3d. If pixel had been making a 3d game, do you think he would have made his weapons the same? His boss fights? This is a whole new system and set of constraints.

If you can thread the needle of good gameplay and and homage to CS, more power to you. But you have embarked on a real game design problem, and the optimal solutions won't be found by copying CS.

How do you feel about privateer troops?

Basically troops that belong to you, and you control, but are directly connected to your country. So you could attack another country, or help someone out, without political repercussions.

Idle animations are actually some of the hardest to do.

If you don't have the, your character will look like a statue, if you do use them you run a serious risk of making it look like your character is perpetually dancing or something.

got the beam sword in

i made a quick anim for it in like 10 mins so it isn't very juicy and feels pretty boring right now

- shortest range but highest damage in game
-automatically destroys any small bullet that it comes into contact with
-blocked projectiles increase charge
-Increased charge powers up sword from 3 lvls
- beam knife
- beam sword
- oversized beam sword


auto block seems a bit too OP and chasing down enemies can be difficult so changing things up so it goes beam sword, oversized beam sword, obviously overcompensating beam sword so hitting things further out is easier

any suggestions welcome, trying to look for ways other people do melee weapons in SHMUPs for inspiration

Turnbased gameboy roguelike anyone?

Working inventory, items have 32 different values for storing damage type, stat bonuses, use speed, use effect, equip type, etc.

Atm it is turn based, but I may put the whole world on a sort of "real time turn based" thing. Basically, you can walk around like in diablo, all 8 directions, and enemies only make actions when you make an action (as in, you take one step, they take one step.) But that only happens when you are engaged in combat, so if an enemy hasnt seen you yet you can still sneak up behind them in real time before combat starts and get sneak attacks etc

What perspective? 2D or 3D? Iso or side view.

One good way of doing this is have "set pieces" either hand made or generated, but basically you want to have tiny thing in your world that tell a story.

A House that has a bathroom, with tub that has a skeleton and a toaster in it.

A campfire that's still going that has blood streaks leading away.

A hanged man on a tree

A teddy bear leaning on a tree with some flowers planted around

One game that does it in a similar way (Although it is a bit clunky) is Fallout 1 and 2. They do a pretty good job of letting you move around the world, and then switch you into turn based mode during combat. The only drawback is they made it difficult to tell how many spaces/cells you had between you and an enemy, which made the tactical part feel a little rough

A few questions.

I have a tiny bit of programming experience, basically just a basic understanding of how it works, which I've been able to apply to C#/C++/Pascal/visual basic.

Anyway, so I kind of want to make the best game ever, probably a phone game (or a computer "phone game").

So the questions

It's a metroidvania so i'm gonna need a lot of levels, and having them all on the same level is boring, jumping on trees sounds stupid too, the only reasonable thing i can think of is an underground something and i can pull off quite a few levels with that but plain woods is just hard.

A couple months ago someone finally changed it to point to the HaxeFlixel website instead of the Haxe homepage. Now, HaxeFlixel is at least something resembling an engine, though it's actually a lower-level framework like XNA/MonoGame rather than an environment with a built-in editor like Unity or UE4. This is a step up, but it's also still stupid because Haxe and HaxeFlixel are not the same thing. There are other frameworks made in Haxe, like Kha.

Of course it doesn't fucking matter because nobody uses the OP. Everyone just comes here to shitpost. You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

Sandbox game, adventure/puzzle hybrid. Small world (a town, but with a variety of settings, like docks, airports, etc.)
Instead of guns, you just jave your hands to move things... and an arduino-like universal remote.
The world is filled with things you can interact with. Need to reach the top of a factory roof? Zap some infrared to a mobile crane in order to make it align with the roof, stack some crates, get on top of it and walk on the crane to the roof.

Not surprised you're in your predicament having played the game now, turn down the screenshake, it makes it impossible to know you're getting attacked if you push x more than once, let alone even think about positioning properly or blocking. Limit it to a little bit upon landing a heavy attack or when a heavy opponent lands after a knockup rather than on literally every attack. The jumping feels a little janky as well but that could be because I'm playing on a keyboard and might be much better with a controller, but it might be an idea to limit the amount of lame platforming we've all seen before, particularly if your character isn't going to have much weight behind their movement.
Consider designing stronger and more damaging enemies which require more deliberate thinking, the combat system is quite meaty and robust and imo it would be more fun to play around enemies that feel more Bayonetta/DMC, with well telegraphed attacks and more punishing damage outputs than a large crowd with fast attacks.
The combat is very juicy though, which is something a lot of people here don't get right so you've got a good base going.

Adding new biomes, new items or new crafts is fairly fast at this point, as long as you know what to add.
I mean, I've added the door because I wanted to implement interactive blocks but now that it's done I have no idea what to add.

Does anybody know what would cause a solid object to suddenly not stop the player? I'm new and have been messing around with making objects interactable and up until now they've been solid and impossible for my player to pass through but suddenly my player object can pass through them no matter what I do.

well shit man, there is some clever stuff going on in here.

the materials by in large are matte, the assets are either vertex painted or share the same colored material.
there is 0 specular so not smoothness. the AA is turned all the way up and i think there is a HINT of bloom just to add some kind of blurriness.
the skydome is handpainted, could be just a plane and not an actual done (depending on how the game is being played)
the biggest factor here is the lightning which is really high quality. real time with high res shadows.
the campfire like should is made with particles, which i don't know a while lot about.
nothing special about the material's however. seem to have diffuse/albedo turned up all the way to 100 if i had to guess

Each piece of dialogue is timed out here. This is going to continue for a while. I timed it out so a player can feasibly hold the door open for about 205 seconds, assuming they can hammer the space bar at a steady pace. So 205 seconds of dialog is intended before it just becomes something akin to recycled crying and screaming.

There was some shit with the center of mass, that it wasn't listening to the blueprint offset. I encountered this before but never had to address it. Pretty bad they haven't fixed it, old old bug.
Shitfix is attaching an uncolliding heavy object beneath it. Otherwise it's putting the offset in directly via code.

It's interesting what minor changes can do to generation. On one hand doing smoothing and cleaning up (right) can make it nicer, but removing that step intentionally can lead to something that feels sharper and more like crystals or something (left). Both are the same seed and rules otherwise. Either way it will be better when more is added like plants or geysers, if I can think of any good native things to add to planet types.

Well, the good thing about cellular automata is that it's self-sufficient to make believable terrains, just like your pic.

I'm using another algorithm fully based on the perlin noise, and even though it can generate all kinds of terrains in one single pass (meaning that I go over the array only once), it is not enough because as you can see I'll need another pass to smooth the whole thing.

If anything I'd say keep it that way, because you're only one value away from smooth to jagged terrain.

I know engine devs like to claim their engine is their game but they never back it up with actual content and game creation. Uli did. I just fixed the strangest bug in gamemaker.

My fps_real was stable around ~700 but my fps kept dropping to ~45 every second or so. Basically, a lot of micro-stuttering. I don't understand how my fps went under the room speed of 60 if my fps_real was in the ~700.

I fixed it by going in the global game settings and setting the sleep margin in the windows tabs from 1ms to 15ms. I don't really understand this. Windows was taking naps when it wasn't supposed to?

Worked on bomb cratering a little bit for the past 30 mins, looks pretty nice now, proud of it. Also it doesn't even come close to dipping the fps a single frame, so that's nice
