>meanwhile the only glassmaking done is my mayor's mussel aquarium
Why is it that my fortresses never turn out the way I want them to? I embark in the forest and plan to do metalwork, and I end up getting sucked into a cloth industry thanks to my twin giant cave spiders. I try to do pottery, but then oh look magnetite, bituminous coal and dolomite how lovely. Alright time for some glassmaking, oh just kidding have some fucking bivalves faggot, hope you like your fishermen churning out a million mussels per second. Its not like you needed that FPS anyway.

It's too late. At first I was like "oh neat some easy cash flow" and then I spent a year setting up my metal industry and getting my military up and running.
Then I noticed my FPS was really fucking low, so I check my stocks screen and find 1.2k fish, as well as stacks of rotted mussels, fresh mussels and mussel shells underneath my fishermen and fisheries, each 3-4 pages long.
I've turned on DFhack's commands to deteriorate excess food and corpses, but it hasn't helped much yet. I'm trapped in fish hell forever now.

That... sounds like quite a comfortable sum. For some reason I imagined Toady and Threetoe living like monks in a small apartment or something, but that sounds like quite a tidy amount of money.

Oh yeah, that was an experiment to make them more brutal, they're definitely nastier, but that's vault metal, so.

>>164289582
Didn't see it was up.

>Yeah, your "deflection roll" is based on your armor use skill, but in the first calculation your dodge roll counts more and replaces your deflection roll if it is higher. That roll is thrown into an equation with the hit roll to get the "squareness" of the attack from 0 to 20. There's some pure luck at this stage though, and the squareness can sometimes be increased regardless of the rolls.

>
Later, the same deflection roll is used directly with relevant worn items one by one to modify attack momentum using the material/etc. -- dodge rolls don't enter into this. Item familiarity can increase this deflection bonus.

>
In addition to speed, high armor skill also decreases your "clunkiness" with heavy worn objects. The clunkiness sum applies a minus to many skill rolls (mostly combat, but a few non-combat).

Well fuck, just when I am ready to discard my hypothesis...
>>
>>164292002
Derp, fucking copy pasting while I'm reading and fucked that all up.

So yeah, Dodge > Armor, then the squareness shit comes in, item familiarity, and then the clunkiness thing?

Yes and it will for all of time because Toady has outright said that he'd prefer to rely on processors becoming more powerful than to learn and recode shit for a year to make it multicore. I mean the few people that have seen the inside guts of DF have said it's like hell on earth with spaghetti code left right and center, poor syntax, and little or no commenting, so I can somewhat understand it.

but plz toady plz we need it some day

If you're dying from FPS death get better ram and a motherboard with a high bus speed instead of a new cpu, ddr4 is cheap as hell and fast as hell, and DF relies mostly on memory and bus speed because of the sheer volume of shit it needs to reference and write.

The problem is that, my motherboard has a FM2+ socket, and I alredy decided that if I buy a new one it's gonna have a 1511 socket. So, going by the logical increments list (I've heard it's good for beginners), the cheapest motherboard there with a 1511 socket and that accepts DDR4 ram is the H111M Pro-D, and it costs 62 euros in my country, the 4GB DDR4 ram costs 35, and I also will have to replace the processor, in the list there's the G3900, that costs 40, but it's better than my current processor, so it's fine. In total right now that's 137 euros, now, maybe the prices in the list aren't the cheapest and I can find the parts for less in another place, but let's use the for this anyway.

As far as I know, you need to reinstall the OS when you change motherboard, and I don't wanna lose my files, I know you can reinstall windows 7 without losing your files, but I've heard that there's still a chance of losing files in the reinstallation process, and my HDD is a bit old, and I don't have another one so I can't backup my files, so I think the best option would be to buy another one, in the logical increments list there's a 1TB HDD for 51 euros, I guess I could buy one with less storage space, in amazon I've found a 500GB one for 42, but the extra space is nice, so I think I can spend some more for the HDD.

The last thing is the case, I don't like my case, in the list, the cheapest case is the GX500, for 55 euros, I've heard it's a pretty good case.

So in total that's 243 euros, if I decide to not change the HDD and the case that's 137.

And I don't even have 137 euros.

Well shits tough, man, I used to be in that exact sort of situation. I had an old 2007 or 2008 shitty little dell desktop with 2gbs of ddr2 ram and a 2 core 2.6 ghz processor until just last year, so I know how it feels. Most I can say is try and save money, although I know how annoying that is when you're told that time and time again even though you have no extra money to save, you're barely making it through until payday.

We already have this.

When the raws say state how common or uncommon something is in an entity, it means the chance for it to appear in a given civ at all.

This means that all civs in the game have a certain combination of clothes, essentially making clothing depend on culture.

It is and it isn't. That's an absolutely abysmal wage for a software developer in the Seattle area given the cost of living, particularly when you account for the fact that he's "married" (i.e., threetoe takes some of the money). Even away from the coasts, that's still substandard. I wouldn't work for that.

But then again, he's livin' the dream as his own boss, so you can't really put a price on that. And it is certainly above-average for wages across all industries, although that's not a fair comparison.

I'd be more interested in getting back into DF if the last couple of updates and the upcoming one weren't so...boring.

You can make taverns now! Dull in practice.
Mine carts! Generally impractical to set up and use effectively.
Double agents! Not that great since the adventure mode conversation system has become a clunky and cumbersome mess that's torturous to navigate through.
Artifacts! Have fun wading through aforementioned conversation system to maybe hear about how an uninteresting cup was moved from one place to another 20 years ago.

Will we ever have an exciting and game-changing release like the undeath/necromancer one way back when, /dfg/?

the one after this one is he magic and myth arc, so that should be interesting. Here's a vid of toady playing around in a myth prototype https://youtu.be/v8zwPdPvN10?t=9m22s

Though I'd argue that the upcoming update is interesting at least for fortress mode, since you will have disputes from civs wanting your artifacts and can even send out your armies to the world to retrieve artifacts of your own.
>>
>>164304185
All those updates were very exciting, though.

You're talking about the night creature release, aren't you? For me, that one was a disappointment, because like half of the promised night creature types never made it in.

The subsequent city release, however, was a great achievement in my eyes. How we went from having those boring little hamlets with some large box for a castle, to having these huge, sprawling settlements with sewers and everything. I used to be a big Discworld fan back then (who can blame me, I was in high school), and for me, the cities resembled the main city in DW a lot.

The parkouring in 0.40 made the cities even cooler to explore, even though some more architectural variety (windows, balconies, second floors, etc) would be great.

>>164318012
Well, it's more complicated if you want to use the manager interface. Personally, I only use the new manager options for perpertual orders, like brewing and wood burning. More delicate stuff, like making the few instruments your tavern and temples need, I just do through ordinary workshop jobs.
>>
>>164318420
With instruments I'm inclined to think it's actually easier with the management interface

You can just mash j-m-q, type in the name of the instrument, and get the orders you need. Optionally add the conditions so you don't get cancellation spam

With workshops you'd have to go past 5 different workshops (worst case instrument I've seen), select the instrument component jobs (which has no hotkey), and make sure to remember adding an assemble job at the end

Either way, it could be a lot easier

can an atack deal both edge and blunt damage?

Nigga, losing Pratchett literally made the world a shittier place which was thus more susceptible to the sort of nonsense that 2016 later oozed, and we should all look forward to a day when we can fuck around on a df world where the residents literally believe it is a disc supported on the back of four elephants riding a turtle through space.

>>
>>164320436
>yeah, but you cant make an atack deal both damages at the same time right
Not exactly, but there is a functionally similar equivalent. Edged with low contact area and low penetration depth. It'll deal edged damage to anything it can pierce, and blunt damage to anything else provided you have enough force. Good example include biting attacks and spiked ball traps. They'll tear skin, fat and muscle, but never penetrate internal organs. They can bruise them though.
>>
>>164321458
okay.
I'll be honest, Im actually trying to create a humanoid race that produces and ''store''s alcohol in an internal organ
The objective is dealing punches that have a small needle that infects alcohol in my enemies
This way I can make them atack worse and debilitate them to the point where I can kill them by alcoholic overdose
I had my laughs when I first thought about it

So, the question maybe should be remade
Can this be done?
I was also picturing a more cool thing where I grabbed someone by the throat, raised them up, and started injecting alcohol directly in their bloodstream by the same hand I hold them
Is this possible either? Can I [GRASP] and [ATACK] someone with the same hand?

Yes, you can grapple someone with your left hand and continue punching them with it too since it's not the same as a embedded weapon. You can't bite with a tooth that's currently latched though, since it counts as an embedded weapon.

Also you could just play a rattlesnake man.
They're very similar to what you're trying to do. Their bites latch on every time, but only the initial bite applies venom. You have to bite again if you want to give them another dose, so the strategy consists of biting, making the enemy break the grip, and then biting again until they pass out and suffocate It takes a really long time though.
>>
>>164323658
interesting
Ok, expanding on this
Lets say that the needle I use to inject them breaks and falls to the ground. Can I make it so even a severed needle still inflicts the sysndrome when used as a weapon to stab someone?
>>
>>164323885
I have absolutely no idea.
Try testing it with snakes in arena mode?
Sever a rattlesnake's fang, then pick it up and stab someone else with it. Make sure it's someone else too, rattlesnakes are immune to their own venom, like all syndrome creatures in DF.

Are you kidding me?
Dwarves got way more flavor in terms of personality and needs now. This might seem dull on the surface, but it creates a great foundation for future updates.
Taverns, libraries and temples are awesome, a place in which stories get told, people get into arguments and possibly change their values. It might seem like a dumb little extra thingy for fort mode, but they are already important in adv mode right now.

As for artifacts and double agents, if your argument is "it might make things harder to naviage", just fuck off. Not to mention the shit artifacts will get in the myth update

Scholars are violent motherfuckers man, you tell Onul that you thought his dissertation on the migration of animals was amateurish, Onul points out how you stole your entire article about how things would have changed if the boots of steel had lost the war in 453 from a paper your niece Mebzuth wrote, BAM, the knives come out... and if they don't have knives, they've got books, and if they can't hold books anymore, they're gonna bite each other to death dammit.

>>

Research will have payoffs later, dwarves work better with fulfilled needs, many dwarves have needs to learn and think and argue, it's another type of visitor and interaction besides caravans/goblins/beasts to add more flavor to your world, and yes, they are super fucking violent in world-gen sites if there are scholars from a goblin civ present.

>>164349203
Technically yes, but they usually get a bug up their ass to go hang in a tower and talk to their zombies, BUT necromancer books can end up getting brought in by scholars and pow, necrofort.
>>
>>164349203
Yes.
You can also be that necromancer by retiring your fort, making an adventurer, learning necromancy, visiting your fort and then using their writing supplies to write about the secrets of life and death. Leave those books at your fortress, then retire and reclaim the fort and boom free necromancers.

Just struck me that I'm pretty good at stuff like being able to look at the x/y/z of a criminal under a town and be able to drop them within a tile of a coffin with a mummy in it halfway across the screen and multiple z-levels higher or lower, or drop myself into a bit of unrevealed travel map and generally be within a few embark tiles of where I am trying to go by editing the armies[me].x_pos/y_pos directly.

I hope so, because vampires are a joke.
In either case, I think they all (were/vampire, agents, FB's, undead, necromancers) should be much much more rare. As it stands, with two or three fortresses you have seen everything there is. It would be a lot more interesting when something like a vampire only happened once in 40 fortresses. Something worth talking about.

>>164393516
Their colors with the default color scheme are quite irritating.
And Microcline looks like adamantine, so people mistake the it for Microcline, which leads to a "just microcline", and eventually "not fucking microcline again, god I hate that stupid mineral".
>>
>>164394137
I've been playing since last year's summer, and I've never gotten a vampire in fort mode.
But yeah, in a couple normal forts you may get to see most content
The answer is not making the content rare tho, the solution is adding more content, or location-wise content, such us biome-animals
>>
>>164394449
>location-wise content such [a]s animals [restricted to specific biomes]
Which would make it more rarer. There is already enough content to diversify it properly. And yeah, I think that's an important feature.

In either case, with the myth generator, we will soon get a tool that allows us to set the rarity of supernatural occurrences. We'll see how far that solves the issue.

Dwarves are small

Actually, I think the first one is the child size, the second the adolescent size, and the third the adult size, if the wiki is to be trusted
>>
I started playing again yesterday after about a year or so. (Do any of the new options when making an adventurer matter? Like their needs and dumping points into Judge of Intent?)

Went into Legends mode first as I always do and found out that my world was apparently a utopia for the first 2 years of recorded history. Normal dwarves were holding competitions with Twilight Hags and Necromancers and generally having a good time until some forgotten beast showed up in Year 2 and killed a bunch of people.

One of the female dwarven necromancers was apparently REALLY into sport, she didn't even become interested in her own mortality until Year 81 or so and before that (and for about 10 years afterwards) she participated in 30-40 competitions, including Crossbow Throwing, Mace Throwing and Foot Races (she was really fucking good at those apparently).

Once she devoted her life to actual necromancy, she wrote a book about competition which is very apt all things considered.

Why the fuck won't my ducks/hens etc lay eggs? I have them pastured and I have nest boxes in that zone, they actually go to the boxes but when they leave them there are no eggs laid.
I've not played this game in two years so I'm sorry if I'm missing something.
>>
>>164402237
It's possible that your dwarves are taking the eggs out of the nest boxes before you get a chance to use them. You can disable cooking them in the Kitchen menu, and also disable eggs from stockpiles and they'll leave them be.
>>
>>164402341
There are no eggs in my stockpiles though.

Can the other dwarves go outside? How do you know?
Can the new migrants do anything else, like chop a tree or gather plants on the surface? Isolate the problem.
>>
>>164404703
Yeah, the other dwarves could get outside, although its a good idea to see if the outside dwarves can still perform tasks, I'll give that a shot.

If all else fails I might just have to make postern
>>
>>164398483
He'll get into an argument with one of your dwarves over the value of craftsmanship, escalate it to a brawl, and then kill him because goblin ethics REQUIRE that all conflicts end in death.
Never accept goblins into your fort. Bard, scholar, mercenary, it doesn't matter. They can fuck right off and take their [ETHIC:KILL_NEUTRAL:REQUIRED] with them.
>>
>>164407541
Honestly I'd let them stay if only to actually get a use out of the criminal justice system (if you can prosecute them for that). Only problem is if they kill a dwarf with a high skill in something good

Raw eggs aren't edible unless you mod the shells to be made out of an edible material. The game currently treats eggs as empty shells, so the fact that the yolk and white are considered edible doesn't matter.

Or at least that was the case last I checked. It may have been fixed. It's been a while.
>>

>>

It isn't the tile set, there is an option to make engravings look like what they contain.
>>
>>164408003
Well there are non-shitty tilesets you could be using instead, but the engraved floors looking like dead dwarves thing is vanilla behavior IIRC. You can toggle whether engravings display their image or not, and your engraver likes engraving pictures of dwarves.

The new options matter at least slightly. Being focused or unfocused (determined by fulfilled/unfulfilled needs) gives a small bonus or penalty to all skill checks, or so I recall.

A possibly disappointing note about legends mode: it always describes people as what they are in the present, not in the past. So that competitive necromancer wasn't a necromancer until sometime around when she became interested in her own mortality and those twilight hag spouses were just normal dwarves back then too.

Dunno about lolis but traps are already in. Just roll a male adventurer with long hair and no "ugly" features, and let your imagination fill in the blanks. Also, you can wear dresses.

For that extra kick though, download the Succubus Dungeon mod. The males have the option to have "hips: very wide" in their bio and will default spawn wearing a corset and stockings. So the succubus race is basically women and traps.

Knowledge and facts are things, even in game. Elves believe trees are mystical and whatnot, they're actually just wood, but they'll sit there talking about how it offends them to hurt shit that can't feel anything while picking the remains of your cousin Kadol who they ate after a battle earlier today. Perhaps if you don't know something for sure then it is best to be aware of that and figure out how to be comfortable with doubt and uncertainty rather than pretend it is a certain way and live your life based on shit you feel is true.

Knowledge and facts inform belief, though not necessarily ingame. That is why it's so jarring to see NPCs ask you to kill a bandit or monster whom they claim is terrorizing them, only to spit on you and call you a murderer when you do so. Their knowledge of facts isn't informing their beliefs. To a large degree that's the problem with SJWs too. But to make decisions based entirely on knowledge and facts without forming or modifying your beliefs is to simply react more or less animalistically. It can be done, and in a few cases it's appropriate, but it generally is not the mark of an intelligent being. Animals can do it. They act on the fact that they're hungry and see prey in front of them. They don't have beliefs about the long-term health of the herd and whether their hunting practices are sustainable or whose livestock it might be and whether it's acceptable to kill it. A human being has beliefs, some are right and some are wrong, but we have reasons for doing and not doing what we do, and therefore we are more than animals and have dominion over the world.

Welp time for a surface fort!
The good news is that I get wild whip vines, sun berries and cotton(which is the first time I've ever seen cotton in DF). The bad news is that I might get raped by giant hippos before I finish building walls.
>>
>>164454094
Isn't there a worldgen setting that controls how deep the caverns are?
>>
Where is the "one-step" keybind in the keybind menu?
>>
>>164449005
NPC's no longer get upset about bandits unless they're literally directly related and friendly with them. Monsters are similar, if you go kill the old giant who just hung out in a cave for three hundred years and never hurt anybody, well, bragging about it and getting spit at for being a dick seems fair.

You can operate without beliefs, simply replace "I know this" with "I suspect this" or "I have reason to operate as though this were the case without actually having certainty that it is" and you're on your way. You may require beliefs to operate, and I imagine you don't feel like they're lies you tell yourself either.

We can project future outcomes and model the response of other minds, we are still animals, just ones with a much more clever party trick than sonar or being able to jump ten feet from a standing position.
>>
>>164454558
Yeah, but it doesn't stop them being super close to the surface in areas that are really low altitude.
I embarked in a wetland that would have been the middle of an ocean if it wasn't filled in for being too small. I should have realized the caverns would be right fucking there under the dirt.
>>
>>164454558
worldgen cave settings by default are:
5z between the lowest surface elevation to the highest point of cavern one.
1z between the lowest point of cavern one and the highest point of cavern two.
1z between the lowest point of cavern two and the highest point of cavern three.
1z between the lowest point of cavern three and the highest point of cavern "four" which is magma.
2z between the lowest point of cavern "four" magma, and the highest point of the underworld.
each of these can be changed from their minimum values to a maximum value of 100.
you can thus in theory dig 400 tiles vertically before you reach magma, and then 100 more tiles to reach the underworld through an adamantine vein.

be aware that doing this will drastically increase the file size and loading time of even a young medium world or any age of small/tiny world. doing this outside of the 64 bit executable can also crash due to a lack of assignable memory (DF.exe loves to hit that 4GB ceiling in the 32bit release!)

every cavern above the underworld can also be as tall as the geography allows, but the minimum tallness of any cavern is always 5, which is what most caverns will end up being because of boring geology. *there is no setting for controlling this so finding a 50z-tall cavern is reduced to pure luck*
there is also no way to control cave features like the connecting passages, magma tubes, and chasms which are found in caverns.

the underworld too, always seems to be only 5z tall, though it can meander up and down and do weird shit because it's the "lowest" extent of the game world.

>would have been the middle of an ocean if it wasn't filled in for being too small
Does that happen? I've seen some pretty small oceans on occasion. But I do a lot of pocket worlds, so maybe it's partially dependent on the size of the world?

>>164455623
Are you sure that's z levels and not geological layers? I just checked the worldgen settings for my current fortress and it's the defaults you posted, but I've dug 19 z levels down and haven't hit the caverns yet. I've dug into 1 z of sand, 7 z of dolomite, 4 z of gabbro, 4 z of slate and 3 z of marble from top to bottom. Or is it 5 z levels beneath the lowest point in the ocean floor or something? I had been assuming that I'd hit the caverns as soon as I got through the bottom of the marble layer, since it's the fifth one down.

>>164454647
You seem to consider belief to imply certainty. This might be a fairly common view, but in my opinion it's incorrect. I don't honestly believe that absolute certainty is something which is available to human beings without divine assistance, and it doesn't look like God is in the habit of giving out that type of assistance very often, if at all. I do indeed not consider my beliefs to be lies I tell myself, but I also don't consider them to be anything I can really prove in any absolute sense, as I don't think anything can be so proven, rather they are things that I chose to take on faith, and implications therefrom.

I would say that your "I suspect this" or "I have reason to operate as though this were the case without actually having certainty that it is" are in fact also based on your beliefs about how the world works. "Either this is true or a certain set of other things are false, and I for various reasons choose to believe the former until I have more reason to believe otherwise"

I think that we might not really disagree on much except how the word "belief" should be interpreted.

The ocean filling thing is a setting if you use PerfectWorld to generate the world's map. I hate having inland oceans unless they're big enough for islands, so I have the ocean fill setting to a pretty aggressive high.

If you talk to a wagon in adventure mode, will it become a hist fig like the animals? Also, will a wagon who kills a histfig (by throwing shit, of course) get hist fig status and build a lair?
>>
Moisttunnels is a lewd name.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrjdLaOQtfM

So this place has the things I need to make copper and bronze goods, lots of wood to turn into charcoal, and in Year 78 got attacked by a werelizard that killed 9 dwarves, including half of my militia. Do I make spears or do I stick with axes? Also can you stack breastplates with mail shirts and greaves with leggings?
>>
>>164461497
Interesting. I would assume that, unless Toady has explicitly coded something to avoid it, the answer to the first question is yes. Though it should be sufficient to merely shout nearby a wagon.
Arranging for a wagon to do someone in? Difficult.
I haven't seen wagons do anything in worldgen, such as throwing competitions or races, so I would assume that they are separated from other creatures fundamentally.
>>
>>164463170
That's because they need to get the hist fig status before they can do anything in wordgen. I guess the best way to go about is the following:

>build fort
>retire
>visit in adv mode
>talk to all wagons you see (sadly this won't give them names)
>play another fort for a few years
>check the legends and see what the wagons have been up to since you left them

As if, I've been desperate for military play for 3 years now but dwarves get way too fucking powerful after only two years of normal training in the barracks. They can take out 95% of every forgotten beasts that come your way. I say 95% because I hear of impossibly difficult beasts showing up in other peoples worlds but for me personally I've never had a forgotten beast defeat my military and a fight is usually over within seconds.
>>
>>164479963
>>danger rooms the only way to get decent military in two years

We may be playing entirely different game because i had 5 legendary sworddorfs in ~2 years of normal squad training ..
>>
>>164479963
It's a well known fact that all FBs, except those who use webs or dust, are a joke.

>>
>>164475901
Discworld isn't canon, nigger.
>>
>>164480103
>>164479963
You start with 7 dwarfs, all of which are working their ass off 24/7, until the big spring migration of the 2nd year all your dwarfs are going to be busy working their asses off, and in my experience two attacks happen within the second year, so that gives you less than a year to prepare for the first attack of either a forgotten beast or siege or whatever, in that less than a year only like 2 out of 10 dwarfs you train ever go near the barracks despite you telling them to train all the time.
>>
>>164480428
Deadly blood and poisonous gas can both be really bad too, depending on their syndrome. And FBs made of fire are effectively melee-proof, since pathing breaks around them, and if any soldiers do get a lucky opportunity for adjacency they'll probably die when the FB explodes.
>>
>>164480706
I have no idea what are you saying.
initial 7 dwarfs are enough to provide basic needs for almost 80-100 dorfs ( disabling hauling is the key ).
Once that big wave hits, get 10 random dorfs, disable all labours on them and set them on constant training - presto, you will have great squad before hitting the 80 dorfs mark that triggers any siege.

Only thing that ever screwed that plan was some random werebeast but 99 % of times i had my bridge up and running so i just lock the fort and wait for it to runaway.
>>
>>164480936
Then you'll never get jack shit done for ages with shitty weapons and armor.
>>
>>164480428
>Goblin sieges are much harder, especially now that we have joint damage.
Joint damage may have made sieges marginally harder, but not by much. It's still so trivially easy to have legendary soldiers before goblins ever arrive that joint damage is rarely a factor if you're playing well.
>>
>>164481051
Why not ?
3 miners, 1 metalsmith, 1 grower, 1 mason and 1 mechanic - my initial seven.
1 or 2 smaller waves - add someone to help growing/brewing/cooking and and furnace operator
Big wave - soldiers.

By the time you get that big wave you can have enough shit to equip them from the best metal you have.
>>
>>164481072
I must be retard then, because I recently had a steel clad legendary 20 man squad wiped out by a maxed out goblin siege (with mounts).

The joint system favours the larger force, and disfavours strong and armoured creatures.
>>
>>164481347
Sorry misunderstood you, I thought you meant get the first 10 random dwarfs you get from all migrations and use those. If I start training them when I get the big migration always without fail my shit gets kicked in by forgotten beasts and sieges and shit. You can hardly get any sort of armor for your dwarves by the first attacks or sieges or other things let alone train them in said armor for any amount of time.

You're either exaggerating some part of that statement or were astronomically unlucky. The overwhelming majority of goblin invaders are of such low skill that, with 3 opposed-skill opportunities to prevent damage entirely (dodge, block, parry), it takes an incredibly improbable RNG result for a legendary soldier to take a single hit or miss an attack. I mean, if they all dodged into a murky pool and drowned I could believe that, I guess.

I once came across a world where every race was on the verge of extinction, except for the elves.
I'd started out with two of each civ, but one of the dwarf civs was converted to human since there was only one neutral mountain range.
In year 2, one of the elf civs was wiped out by a roc.
One of the goblin civs got themselves sucked into a war against all three human civs, and was wiped out before year 60.
Meanwhile, the remaining goblins were having a march of death across dwarven lands with their demon and his pet cave dragon leading the charge. They conquered everything except a handful of distant hillocks, and then turned on the humans and wiped them out too, sparing only three hamlets of one human civ.
Finally, they turned on the remaining elves. The long march south through savage, good aligned jungles probably hurt their forces quite a bit, but when they arrived they still had their demon and dragon with them.
Unfortunately for the goblins, there was a giant grizzly bear living in the first forest retreat they attacked, and he killed both the demon and the dragon, and I'm sure countless goblins as well.
Infuriated by the attack, the elves retaliated by exterminating goblins from the face of the earth. By year 130, goblins were the least populous race on the planet with a double digit population, followed by humans, kobolds and dwarves with low hundreds. Meanwhile, elves were thriving with something around 10k population, and almost all of the goblin sites they'd conquered were inhabited by shitloads of animal men.

The moral of the story is don't fuck with elves, unless you feel like converting your dark goblin fortress into a dark grizzly bear man fortress.
>>
>>164493124
Yes. Coinstar rooms were always more dangerous than spear-based danger rooms after the bug that made coins harmless was fixed.
Even shit like plant seeds is enough to break bones with an unlucky hit.

Live training is probably the best method now. Just set up some cage traps underground and let your dwarves beat the shit out of crundles to train them.

>>
>>164495895
There's still plenty of viable dwarven contraptions to use for defense. Serrated discs, cage traps, cave in traps, drowning chambers, so many options.
Military's always best as a last resort defense in my opinion. Just let them train in the barracks all day just in case something makes it through your serrated steel corridor with more than half a limb intact.
>>
>>164496613
World is long since deleted, since as you can imagine a world dominated purely by elves is a shitty world for both fort mode and adv mode.
If I had to guess, I'd say the combined goblin casualties of both wars were probably around 20k, since one goblin civ is usually about 10k pop by year 130. I have no idea about the other races though since they're nowhere near as consistent.

at the moment, reddit is widely considered "SJW" on 4chan. just two to three years ago, it was considered conservative, and the "reactionary neckbeard" was often used as a reddit stereotype. since then, 4chan has taken a steep right turn, and its view of reddit has changed accordingly.

of course, the reddit community remains today what it was back then, and it's pretty similar to the one of 4chan.

The one on my current map is 10z deep.

>How are you supposed to expose the entire auifer if the first zlevel prevents you form digging deeper to drop a big block on all the zelvels at once
If you drop a ring of dirt into the aquifer level, then channel out all the rock inside the ring, and then drain/pump out all the water, you'll end up with a square of dry floor inside the ring. To clear multiple Zs, make a set of concentric rings on the dirt layer. Drop the outermost ring to clear the first aquifer layer, then the second-outermost to clear the second, and so on.

Or just use double-slit method, it's pretty simple

>Still totally worthless, give up on them entirely and never bother with weapon modding again

>Can't get them to be shearable or milkable, and egg-laying only works for rough gems, not boulders of flux stone or ore
>Can't even get them to be made out of different minerals based on their caste
>Finally give up on them after three days of struggling

>Try to make velociraptors and tyrannosaurs
>Spend centuries figuring out how to customize their body shape, never figure out how to make it work
>Try to have two normal castes, and then a specific rare caste that is a semi-megabeast
>Ends up making the game treat every single raptor as a mega-beast
>Scrap them until later

>Try to make a new playable race and civ, with unique nobles and playstyle so that there's a reason to play them over dwarves
>After weeks of learning, testing, bugfixing and rebalancing, finally manage to get them to a state where they're balanced in worldgen and work as traders and adventurers, but the noble positions don't work the way they're supposed to so they end up with like 5 monarchs per site
>What the fuck ever, as long as I can trade with them I guess

>Try to make underground rose plants that produce petals which can be milled for dye or pressed for oil to make valuable soap
>Everything works mostly alright, except the stock screen has no idea what the fuck anything is so it labels all related products as " leaf", with the sole exception of the soap, which is about ten times more valuable than I intended but whatever

How would I mod the game so I do fortress mode as goblins?
How would this change the game as opposed to dwarves?
>>
>>164531464
They would need the right entity links added, the right positions, and the [ALL_MAIN_POPS_CONTROLLABLE] tag added to gobs, and a lot probably?

>>164528580
No prob, you can play with the values some, I just modeled them off of a war hammer with a bit more velocity since they're not as large, though I might have left the actual size too high, but it worked well enough, did the multiattack since you'll probably want two of them.
>>
>>164531464
>How would I mod the game so I do fortress mode as goblins?
I think you might need to make a separate goblin civ. IIRC ENTITY_EVIL has some kind of hardcoded issue that makes playing as it impossible. I might just be imagining things though.
You can try adding the [ALL_MAIN_POPS_CONTROLLABLE] tag to see if it lets you embark as them.

Aside from that, you would need to add the noble positions, unless you feel like playing without a broker, manager, bookkeeper, hospital or military. You can just copy-paste straight from dwarves, or make custom noble positions which is fun but difficult to do properly.
You'd also probably want to give goblins access to all the proper tech. Make sure they can craft picks, build all the workshops and have knowledge of all the different reactions and skills. For instance, dwarves are the only race that has access to steel and adamantine in vanilla.

Aside from that, the primary differences would be
>all tavern brawls end in murder thanks to [ETHIC:KILL_NEUTRAL:REQUIRED]
>no trade, not even with your home civ since goblins don't trade and are automatically at war with everyone, even if there's no active conflict
>seasonal sieges, with winter as your only respite
>different attribute spreads means goblins will do better at some things than dwarves, and worse at others. Luckily they're the exact same size and strength, so hauling is the same speed

Oh also, these won't come up with goblins, but with more exotic races, they matter
>amphibious and even aquatic races will REFUSE to enter water no matter what, and will panic and cancel everything to get out ASAP if forced into it. No merperson fortress for you fag, hope you enjoy your crippling hydrophobia
>flying races can only fly up, not down. Once they leave the ground, they can never return unless killed
>races that are larger and/or stronger than dwarves will haul heavy items faster than them
>races with higher agility than dwarves will move faster in general

Speaking of modding, I had plans of using the phoebus tileset's race tiles and putting them in Obsidian, and then messing around with the races until I found a balance I liked. I actually ended up switching most of them around. The Phoebus tilesets for Elves, Kobolds, Humans, and Goblins would become the default races, and

The Obsidian elves would be city dwellers (They would spawn in badlands and be slavers and stuff.)

The Obsidian humans would live in fortresses (basically knight monasteries, crusader type deal.)

Obsidian goblins would be feral tribes that broke from the demon's rule and live in the forests.

And Obsidian kobolds would be a new slave race utilized by demon lords who corrupted a few of them and let them breed.

I would have the Obsidian dwarves remain as they are but modify their raws to be more warlike, and the Phoebus dwarves would be more pacifistic village-dwellers.

But I kind of put it on hold when I realized I'd probably need to edit a ton of stuff after the artifacts update.

>Realize that this makes no difference since my dwarves would be perfectly happy with a barren mudhole designated as a 'temple', and that this pantheon of gods will never feature in my games ever again and is currently absolutely meaningless since none of them have created any vaults and none of them have necromancy spheres
The update can't come soon enough.

>>
>>164554000
Oh shit really?

>>
>>164554156
Yup, my experiments showed that elf sites work surprisingly similar to human hamlets. Interestingly, the outdoor orchard token can be used with the human hamlets, as well. They don't seem to affect the economies of the civs, so I asssume they're mostly a decoration for the sites.

Also, if you change the elves so they only use indoor wood, their treehouses will become made out of subterranean trees and giant fungi. It's interesting if you want to mod in House Telvanni from Morrowind or something.

are newbie questions welcome here?

>what tasks can i give in the early game to avoid idle dwarfs?
to be more specific: i start with digging out a 11x11 room to haul everything inside. after that i dig rooms in this order: 3x5 farm, carpenter + wood stockpile, mason + stone stockpile, kitchen + diningroom + foodstockpile, dormitory.
while digging out rooms most of my dwarfs are idle. also after getting some beds, tables, chairs, barrels, crates, buckets and caskets i have no idea what do do with my carpenter or mason
>how do i dig stairs upwards?
>does it make sense to build floors?
>is there a way to quickbuild floors or walls?
>will dogs starve if i put them in a 1x1 pasture to use them as a watchdog?
>how deep do i have to go to find metal ores?

haul shit, stone detailing and smooth your fort.

you can use your mason to cut blocks for easier building later, make coffers, cabinets, doors for rooms. also try not to make barrels, but rather stone pots from a craftshop. reason being if you try and trade shit to an elf and it's in a barrel they'll get pissy and storm off.

dig an upward staircase, and above that dig an up/down staircase.

floors are mostly used for building outside/bridging gaps. you can also use them for flooring the non stone levels of your fort if you really want.

+ and - on the numpad change how many walls you build at once, and i believe umhk for flooring.

any animal that does not graze never needs to eat. so you can lock them in small rooms and they won't starve. if you overcrowd them though they will start fighting with eachother.

depends how deep your soil is and if you have shallow metals. just dig your main staircase further down and you'll find some eventually.
>>
>>164554880
>what tasks can i give in the early game to avoid idle dwarfs?
Why do you want to do that? You shouldn't give tasks to dwarves just because you want them do be busy; you should give tasks to dwarves because you need something. Do you need doors? Let them make doors. Do you need crafts? Let them make crafts. It's okay to let your dwarves idle or dance in the tavern, they like that.

>how do i dig stairs upwards?
You don't.

>does it make sense to build floors?
Inside? Not really, there is no benefit and you can build things on a floor so there's that.

>is there a way to quickbuild floors or walls?
Macros. Look it up on the wiki.

>will dogs starve if i put them in a 1x1 pasture to use them as a watchdog?
Dogs don't need food so no.

>how deep do i have to go to find metal ores?
No idea desu. Check the wiki.

Maybe use more than 1 miner? You don't need wood and stone stockpiles that early. Just leave logs and stones where they are, hauling them to a stockpile costs a lot of time early on. I would advice an office for your manager to be built asap. Also make a trade depot because you might forget if you postphone it. You should have taken enough food with you to last for a short while, at least long enough that you don't need to get a farm immediately. You can make an entrance room with the carpenter and the mason, you can dig special rooms later.

What I always do is entrance, entrance hall (make that a meeting area), stockpile, office, dining hall (remove old meeting area and make this the new meeting area), everything else.
>>
>>164555768
Elves only get mad if you try to trade the barrel. If you bring gems in a barrel to the depot and trade the gems individually (select the gems, not the barrel) they don't care.

>mason
If you've got enough excess stone, have them churn out statues, assuming they've already made enough blocks for your walls. Masonry is pretty damn slow though, so it should be taking a while for your masons to be finished with all their work, unless you have a shitload of wood and your carpenter is making all the furniture.
>carpenter
Make sure you're stocked up on barrels and bins, maybe make some extra to replace ones you'll lose during trading. Not much else to do with a carpenter. Mine is usually obsolete by around year 3, and spends most of year 2 idle.

It's not the end of the world if some of your dwarves rarely work. You don't use your carpenter or mechanic 24/7, but you still need to have one available for when you do need to use them, and its probably best to have them dedicated to that one job. You should only go out of your way to keep them busy if you're trying to train them, or if they produce trade goods or otherwise pump up your fortress value. Idling does no harm as long as skill rust isn't kicking in, which takes the better part of a year, and much longer at higher skill ranks.
Besides, idling is good for your dwarves and fortress in general too. It keeps your dwarves happier, and happier dwarves are more likely to produce higher quality work. A focused armorer with 5 skill is more likely to produce a masterwork than a distracted legendary armorer(mainly because distracted pretty much prevents masterworks entirely, but still).

The trick with elves is to exclusively trade them old worn out clothes.
Clothes are always kosher, a single Xpig tail sockX is easily worth twice the entire net worth of your average elven civilization(before factoring in the dye modifier), and all fortresses have an abundance of tattered clothes to dispose of.
If you're feeling really generous, you could even donate a spare -giant cave spider silk cloak- or two. Living outdoors and sleeping in trees is pretty cold when your race hasn't yet invented clothing and is too poor to afford real clothes.

>>

>>
>>164562241
The way I see it by taking hormones you're basically turning more into the little girl relative to a testosterone-fueled male.

the little girl-ness:
the little girl > the adult girl = the little boy > adult bio male on girl hormones > the standard adult bio male

I want to be the little girl too anon, but until we have the technology for that hormones are your best bet. And if you're on hormones you'll never be any more masculine than you are now, and will actually get more feminine, whereas without them you'll get more and more masculine as you age.
>>
>>164562714
>you'll get more and more masculine as you age
Wait, so it doesn't stop when you become adult? When DOES it stop?
>>
>>164562827
I mean compare the difference between middle aged men and 20 year old men, versus the difference between middle aged women and 20 year old women.

You might stop growing bone wise and such but your skin and hair and muscles/fat and stuff will keep in the trajectory to getting old-man ish.

Although hormones actually drop in old age (menopause and low T) so in that sense you do get a bit more androgenous in old age (gynecomastia and such). But if you take external girl hormones then you wont necessarily have to have menopause because you control your own hormone levels.
>>
>>164562827
Annd depending on what age you start, even if you start in your early 20s you can get more feminine/wider hips because your hips don't 'seal' until the mid 20s on average.

Basically the earlier you start girl hormones the better your results will be.
>>
>>164563081
Yeah, but neckbeards don't seem to get more masculine (not that I am one).

I don't think anyone knows for sure but personally I think so. It seems like that's true and it could be because of something like social pressures (our society is now less physical (masculine), and is more social/feels-based (feminine)) reducing sexual development or something, like how some fish can change genders based on social context. Maybe human's have some of that. In fact that's one reason I think trans people seem more common nowadays (the other might just be purely cultural). Just my own personal idea but then again you and others have noticed it too.
>>
>>164563498
The gender explosion is all about cultural acceptance. I grew up with two uncles who were actually just my moms gay buddies, and another uncle who was my aunt until things got where he could comfortably be who he was rather than what he was born as.
>>
>>164564109
Hmm yeah it does seem like that is a big part of it.
But I think maybe a more subtle influence is something with epigenetics/gene expression based on like social conditions leading to more feminine males or something. But who knows.

Obok Meatgod was a thing. He raped a goblin child to death with his dick. On Bay 12 Forums they call that "The Incident".

Also hey

How did I manage with the werelizard? It's somewhere towards the end there. Fuck killed 9 of my dwarves and injured my legendary miner and my smith. Just generally speaking. I am maybe an average, below-average level Dwarf Fortress player.

fuck off cunt
I swear to god. there's always gotta be an entitled faggot in any general that needs to point out when a thread is going to shit

If you really dont feel okay with the state of your house, do you bitch at it in despair, because you dont know what to do, or you try to clean it up?
The frogposters are the epicentre of this defeteatist behaviour, but its really become something common to most boards, and its become really tiring

If you love /dfg/, how about you try to create some OC so fagets like me get their mouth shut up and stop shitting the thread, instead of posting a frog photo shooting a gun to the sky

I had a power cut right during an invasion. Hopefully my save wasn't lost and I didn't loose much. However, the invasion I was then expecting never came. Is that event random or did something internal broke?

I believe the game uses a different random seed every time you load the save. So if you reload from a previous save, you can get different results for random events.

How possible would it be to mod tree-people (ents) into the game? And not in a way that they rampage around in world gen like colossi, but stay in forests.

Also, post tranquil music.
>>
>>164576997
I don't see the point. Aren't you just adding a whole lot of maintenance work and possible bugs for no benefit? Where does the game draw the line between upper and lower, and where do you draw the line between upper, middle and lower. How does each apply to different body plans (arthropods, fantasy creatures, procedurally generated stuff, etc) and where are the advantages and disadvantages of each model?

Why not go all the way and separate it into the anterior-posterior body segments (i.e. the vertebrae in vertebrates)?

>>
>>164577484
>Not in a way they rampage around the world gen
Maybe if you make them culturally similar to beastmen? Or as "pets" for elves?
That said, does DF differentiate between the different layers on a tree, IE bark and whatnot? Would be pretty sick to fight a wooden colossus.

It would be a mod for a single creature, like humans or dorfs

Like 32 bit OS (just upgrade to a 64 bit version) or 32 bit processor (just upgrade to an actual toaster, the last non-ARM 32 bit-only processors are literally over a decade old at this point) because it is not certain that your processor is actually 32 bit just because your OS is.

I mean, if you ARE playing on a decade old Pentium III or early Pentium 4, that's kinda impressive, but damn man.

You should be getting paid to use a system that old, since you couldn't sell one unless it was at a negative price, or to some obscure chipset collector maybe?
