Ye, but those rods are fairly rare so it would be interesting to see if the wands are more common to find and how strong 1 charge of it is, especially since they don't recharge naturally now.

all we get is wand of iron, wand of clouds

they're just their rod equivalent in easy to use wand form, limited use but effective even without skill

you'll hold on to clouds because you think to yourself that this may be useful against some really high EV monsters sometime while you get your 30-30-30 tabtabtab

and when you pause at newbie friendly 50% and contemplate your options, you'll look over your inventory and think about that wand of clouds then aa ab tabtabtab

in summary, nothing has changed except those that cared to have fun with style points swapping rods around will be playing DCSS a bit less now

Pretty sure he said in one of his posts/interviews that at least one guy other guy writes with him.

Plus, DF isn't really a good example. It has worse design than any of the roguelikes and almost-roguelikes allowed on /rlg/, including Dredmor, and all the fun comes from the game mode that is nothing like roguelikes.

Gnoll packs and cattleprods on D:1 for any **Wi is just fucking insta-splat.

It's annoying, but that's not even my issue with wizard starts. My issue with wizard starts is the complete lack of an AC breaker of any kind without getting lucky on books.

Replace Slow with Bolt of Magma so Wizards stop getting walled by Orc Knights/Death Yaks because they can't get a book drop worth a damn.

Can you cancel the confusion with curing? I had some success with Sublimation + Regeneration for Abyss healing, but if Ambrosia can be canceled in emergencies it might be safer.

yes you can, but the confusion and the regen are tied together so you'll stop healing as well

ambrosia is strongest in the early game when the regen is high enough that you can just facetank enemies with it on

Possibly worth the inventory slot then, although I'm still not sure it's worth the additional risk. Sublimation can occasionally do 50% HP damage or so, but taking two turns to escape also seems dangerous. And I only have a limited supply of Ambrosia anyway.

If it's safe enough to do that then it's probably safe enough for Sublimation of Blood + Regen, which doesn't burn consumables and doesn't delay you for a turn while you unconfuse.

if you have regen castable there's just about no point where you should be in a fight without it active though, and ambrosia stacks with it

again, it isn't for refilling your hp bar and going back into the fight anew, except at low levels when you have a smallish hp bar

As a Spriggan, starvation is a real possibility. Regen makes me use 5 times as much food (proportionally bigger impact on Spriggans than any other species) so I don't like to use it all the time.

first time getting 3 runes and clearing Vaults:5 ever!

It wasn't nearly as bad as I expected, although that's probably because I took an escape hatch down to V:5 and ended up all the way to the left side of the room, rather than starting in the middle. My minotaur is also super fucking beefy, so that helped, too.

It's an artefact. I would *totally* enchant it more or switch to something better, but:

1) Vamp is godlike
2) MR++ is nothing to sneeze at, either
3) Until I cleared Vaults:5, this was *literally* the only source of rN+ I found, besides (maybe) some unidentified shop items.

An endgame naga of chei can easily kill them all. The orb run with Chei requires a lot more fighting but you're so strong that you can take down the various pan lords and fiends so easily that it doesn't even matter.

If you want to try 15-runes, be a MiFi of Makhleb.

Also, teleports take longer in Zot and scrolls of blinking become uncontrolled so I'm not too sure if the cBlink spell works there too, so try it out when you get there.

Partially.
There is no z-level vision (well, it exists, but it's slow as fuck and buggy), but you can still activate z-level mode without it. Then you get shit like fires spreading from basement to houses above, being able to climb up a house (and zombies climbing to follow) and items falling off buildings.
The NPCs don't shoot through you as much, are less exploity (you don't grind favor by selling them planks), allow you to armor and arm them, help you with crafting.
Combat got reworked. Mostly objectively improved, though there are changes not everyone likes (stamina).

There are many more changes. Some fuckups, but mostly improvement.

Yet another quality addition to one of the dullest roguelikes in the history of roguelikes. Each commit by the Devil's Team and their sycophants from the Tavern as they remove assorted features has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the removal of content, the game's only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of interesting tactical situations, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Campbell vetoed the idea of Linley developing the game; he made sure the game would never be mistaken for a real roguelike that meant anything to anybody, just ridiculously unprofitable cross-promotion for Tolkien books. DCSS might be anti-fun (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-Nethack roguelike in its refusal of spoilers, Dwarves, and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

The gameplay is dreadful; the game was terrible. As I played, I noticed that every time a developer removed a feature, the dev wrote instead that the feature "had been bloat."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Campbell's mind is so governed by optimal play and efficiency that he has no other style of developing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of DCSS by the same Edmund McMillen. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are playing DCSS at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to play The Binding of Isaac." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you play DCSS you are, in fact, trained to play The Binding of Isaac.

It isn't as powerful as antisummoning.
The chance is lower and heavily depends on being at open ( basically, chance for it failing is 1/(open_squares_adjancent/2 - 1), so it maxes out at 1/3, which is less impressive than the failure-rate of 1/7 of amulet.
However, it also does another roll to reroute monsters ( at same chances of failure ) to some other spot in the map, max distance being player level * 4, minimum being player level.

Well... I guess it IS a rather significant buff, but I feel like they need something like it.

By the way, unlike the anti-summoning, the ability does NOT prevent your summons ( ex. summon kin ) - I did change formula for prevention, basically it is 5 * adjacent_open_tile ( +10 if you are level 45 or above ).

So basically at max 1/2 chance of being prevented, then 1/2 chance of placed in random spot in map.
It does stack with anti-summoning, so basically you'd then have total 1/14 chance of summons failing.

Warper is a fairly fiddly background, and nagas slowness is incredibly bad in the earlygame.

If you want a game where you have a simple playstyle and steamroll everything, play a minotaur fighter, or if you want to be a magic user, be a draconian conjurer, it's like MiBe for mages.

You'll want to win with straightforward combos before attempting anything that's fiddly or has some sort of niche because they require a little more finesse in earlygame.

You'll have to learn the basics before you do more complicated stuff.

Also, in the situation with the gnoll: It's a speed 10 monster. This means that you can run away and it won't be able to touch you, it would only be able to follow, and then at some point, due to randomized energy, it'll lag behind which is when you can up a staircase and avoid it.

and, really, your choice of background only determines your starting tools and fighter and conjurer have very strong tools to start off with. I would only pick stuff like warper or necromancer if I specifically could benefit from them in the earlygame, like If I wanted blink on a Troll asap to avoid bad situations.

Maybe try, Troll warper if you want to try unusual combos? Ignore your other spells and get blink reliable along with training UC to 15, then train fighting,dodging.

Don't go in the ossuary(sand place), it's too much of a risk at this point.

Floors 4-7 generate the temple, so keep your eyes out for that, or a Vehumet altar.

Swiftness will let you kite anything pretty easily, not use it to quickly get away from something. It will leave you slowed for a bit afterwards, so keep that in mind.

Repel missiles is nice to have against centaurs, and static discharge and lightning have decent damage but make a ton of noise.

Always keep a clear path of retreat and run the fuck away if you think a situation will go south. A

You've got a lot of scrolls already, some could be usable for escape. But they might be something bad so don't risk it now. Scrolls can be safely read IDed while you're standing on the upstairs below a cleared level. If anything bad happens (teleport counts as bad), go upstairs immediately. You waste scrolls doing this but it's better than gambling with unknown scrolls.

Potions are riskier to quaff ID, and wasting cure mutation is very painful, so I usually identify them with scrolls of identify.

Scrolls of ID are definitely worth buying because earlygame you increase your chances survival massively if you get teleport,blink or fear.

the autodestroyer is a very useful tool, use _ to open it. It can take a bit to figure out what you want your script to do, but once you have it you can just walk over loot to autopickup what you like, autodestroy what you don't, without doing any extra work yourself.

If you mean the warg quest, the quest monsters for that always spawn on d5 of Stronghold, but they're native to deeper.

Holy fucking shit, my heart can't take this shit. I walked down some steps and a fucking 2 headed ogre was on my ass. in vanilla they are another 66% resist that stacks multiplicatively with the 66% resist from gear, so you use those and only take 1/9th damage from Uriel's 1600 damage fire breath or something

So if your mutations are mostly bad, you'll just random them away and you can just stop when they're mostly good. Worst case you run out of chunks and you drink cure mut, more likely you'll end up with several good mutations and maybe one tolerable one.

And if you get exposed to some kind of malmutate later, you've actually got a form of psuedo-resistance as you'll more likely lose something good rather than gain something bad since you already have so many mutations already.

Having only cleared a 3-runer once so far, I decided to take this game a bit further and grab a few extra runes. I currently have Shoals, Spiders, Vault and Slime.

The latter trip has left me a shell of my former Tengu self however. I may have difficulty reintegrating into society with all these handicaps.

I heard that you can get a complete Mutation cleanup by worshipping Zin. I was thinking of ditching Trog, since I am pretty strong and there is an amulet of Bloodlust somewhere down in the dungeon.

What more, I've been stockpiling spellbooks behind his back, and as a Tengu I can probably pick up basically spellcasting. There's even a Manual of Charms in the elven halls.

My problem is the following : I've never survived a god's wrath before. What should I do?

I had Teleportitis on a peculiar character once. It was a hill orc axeman of Chei. I was doing pretty good until I got struck by teleportitis. Then things got even better because I would constantly be teleported right into large groups of monster. Thanks to Chei stats and a vampiric battleaxe, I would always come out on top.

Unfortunately, blurry vision ended my run. I tend to gamble on mutations a bit too often.

I'm not a dev, it's just an inevitable conclusion if you had a functional brain to begin with. No, you don't need a 3 digit IQ to immediately realize that floating +9 weapons is faulty design. If they insist on letting that stay, it should at least scale with invocations with Level 10 Invo = +3 - +5, Level 27 Invo = +6 - +9 weapons (deciding how varied they're going to scale that is going to be problematic). As long as that current weapon enchantment = floating weapon enchantment bullshit is gone.

It also has another major problem; let's not pretend to be retarded here, you do realize that 80% crosstraining for EVERY single melee attacks is outright violating the game's core of making choices right? This game is all about choices and if you have a feature that completely eliminates a major part of it (melee), it just contributes to the amount of bloat this game already has and should be plucked. Don't even get me started on those dumb slow and paralysis, another no-brainer that practically forces the player to do acrobatic bullshit to deliver irresistible debuffs as much as possible.

Replace discs of storms with lightning rods
Using XP evoker mechanics but adjusted for a slightly simplified version of the
old rod spell. Instead of having its mana use vary and reset depending whether
it's used on consecutive turns or not, it now has a fixed 4 charges, with the
power increasing each time (and allowing for area targeting as previously when
zapped on consecutive turns). Once all 4 charges are used, it becomes inert
like a normal XP evoker and the power resets.

The bolt now also always hits (instead of having power-dependent accuracy on
the first zap but huge fixed accuracy on consecutive zaps), and has fixed noise
instead of noise varying depending on charge.

Remove rods
Some rods have fun and unique effects, but the item class itself doesn't work
very well - it demands frequent item switching, and creates yet another
different item type that provides ranged attacks and summons (on top of
launchers, wands, regular evokables, ...). The iron rod and rod of clouds have
already been repurposed as high-tier wands. Rods of ignition and inaccuracy are
removed outright - they could in theory work as wands, but clouds and iron are
probably the better effects and there are already a large number of
direct-damage wands. Shadows is also removed outright, as it mostly duplicates
an existing scroll and spell (just with very slightly different rules).
Lightning rods are another neat effect but wouldn't function as a wand, so are
planned to be repurposed into some kind of evokable.

One handed axes aren't really good. 2h is better.

As for statue form, it is a rather high-level transmutation/earth spell that makes you slow-as-shit statue - but you get massive boost on unarmed damage, which scales with STR ( synergizes with STR boost. Damage is UC+6+(Strength/3)) ).
Plus you get ton of hp etc., and since you are slow as shit, slouching deals extremely high damage.

Try wearing slightly heavier armour like mottled dragon scales/ring mail and train some armour skill alongside some more magic skills to get your spells reliable again.

Death's endgame highlights are nether storm, wraithform, mass genocide, and vampirism true, all of which are nice. Daemon's endgame upsides are hellfire and polymorph demonlord, which are overall better than death's stuff, though wraithform in particular is great from death.

I guess I'd recommend Daemon a bit more, it's certainly more versatile. Death has a lot of trouble dealing with demons and undead unless it genocides them, even though wraithform is one of the best buffs in the game, so is polymorph demonlord.

I lost my Human Air elementalist.
I went to the elf place and a fucking spriggan berserker 3 shotted me. I couldn't outrun it, I couldn't fear it (because it was berserked I suppose?) and I had no healing / blink scrolls left.

Sif and Vehumet's mana aren't really that necessary since Sublimation of Blood exists. You will always try to get Regeneration anyway regardless of your character build because it's overpowered..

Tomb is off the table, that's wayyy too dangerous. Also, the stuff in V:5 is not worth the risk when you so easily just win through getting the abyssal rune and going to Zot.

Yeah, generally best course of action when fighting the serpent is ( at least for me ):

that's plenty of space to reach a staircase or door
