During his co-op events he not only deals with the emotional package left by Madarame, but he also gains ambition and learns to accept it as an important part of himself and not just a corrupting force.

Makoto's entire story is about her listening to her own inner wisdom and intution, about believing in her own judgement instead of just believing what others say, about thinking what she herself wants to do with her life instead of letting other people decide it for her.

We can see these in her coop, where she essentially believes in her own intuition and judgement about her friend's boyfriend instead of believing her friend's words - as opposed to her friend, who ignores her own inner voice because she wants to believe in her boyfriend. Worrying about her friend also makes Makoto think about her own life and what she, deep down, really wants to do.
