what kind of area would the glowing sea have been before the nuking? I don't mean where is it on a IRL map, but if it was wooded, industrial, suburban etc., with the underground labs and the like, I'm inclined to think it was a typical suburban area (churches and such) with an industrial estate nearby which housed secret labs, too

I also hate how the glowing sea is even a thing, but in DC the landmarks haven't even toppled over, but hey

The glowing sea was created by a high yield megaton+ size nuclear bomb, most all of which had been decommissioned long before the war in favor of smaller yield bombs that produced more radiation.

The one that hits in the opening cutscene is the Crater of Atom seen in the Glowing Sea, not the ones in Cambridge. The sinkhole also isn't a crater, unless you're referencing something else. I'm not sure if it's explicitly stated that the Cambridge crater is a nuclear warhead or just a crater resulting from some form of collapse.

I doubt the crater in Cambridge was created from the impact of a nuclear warhead, the whole place should be flat as the glowing sea. Maybe something exploded underground, maybe some piece of fallout fell from the sky after the blast, hence the huge rads in the area.

Regardless of how it's represented and shown, Todd Howard has stated in interviews that the Glowing Sea is the result of the bombing shown in the opening cutscene. As the others have said, in lore, it can be explained as the Chinese aiming for the Sentinel site.

Except it very clearly wasn't as, if you look at the direction the nuke hits at, and compare it to the in-game map, it hits nowhere near the glowing sea, and, in fact, hit where we see it hit, aka, the downtown crater shows previously.

I find it baffling people still think the intro nuke was the glowing sea nuke when it was pretty well confirmed after the game came out that it wasn't.

But you always end up getting these kind of people cropping up after the game has been out for awhile, but who weren't there when everything was being discovered, so they are behind the curve

It doesn't really matter how it's represented in the game if Todd Howard himself stated on record in interviews that it's the one shown in the Glowing Sea. The Glowing Sea crater is directly south/southwest of Vault 111, so yes, it doesn't make sense going by the cutscene, but the nuclear warhead seen in the intro was devastating enough to cause the eradication of everyone on the surface above the Vault. That fits with the environment around the Glowing Sea, not the craters shown in Boston, Cambridge, and elsewhere.

Honest question, but have you played any of the previous fallout games?

Like, even as far back as Fallout 1 the devs have said that nukes in Fallout were designed to cause very little if any actual physical damage, which is why cities like Los Angeles, Bakersfield, and San Francisco still stood in pretty good condition despite the fact they all got hit.

No, Arlen Glass mentions he lived in Cambridge, and that after the war he went to go find his house only to find hit had been entirely destroyed by a nuke hitting it.

My mention of 'the nuke' is referring to your specific language, because calling something The Nuke, in my mind, refers to the large warhead used that caused the opening cutscene, as opposed to simply a nuke, which could be any number of smaller yield warheads. For example, think of the warhead you detonate in Megaton, and the effect it has on the entire city. The glowing sea was caused by a megaton+ sized nuclear bomb, which was basically unheard of in Fallout's unvierse.

Even assuming the Legion isn't as misogynistic as portrayed in FNV, there aren't many places for women within the actual Legion, so you'll ultimately have to play the role of the breeder, or you'll have to be a merchant or caravan owner who is protected by the Legion, effectively not joining the Legion itself.

It depends if it is an air burst or a ground burst. From a military perspective, you don't need to vaporize buildings. They just have to get enough damage to be useless.

The adavantage of air bursts are that you can let the mach waves work to your advantage, effectively increasing the blast radius of the nuke. (Then there's faggotry about the triple point, where the reflected wave hits the primary wave, but that increases in height the farther away you get. So let's keep that to another lesson.)

The advantage of ground bursts are that you can crack tougher targets. The obvious disadvantage is increased fallout, as the hard radiation can make the dust radioactive.

The most "clean" nukes are hydrogen nukes, because the fire ball doesn't have to touch the ground.

Food isn't a major issue, it's not getting murdered by things. People can farm and raise animals but raiders and super mutants make that hard. More folks die to physical threats and radiation than starvation.

Maxson's BoS only has around 500 people in it, and the force needed to properly secure The whole Institute facility would put a massive drain on his troop numbers.

Not to mention that, if he doesn't properly secure it, that just allows people who got out the chance to take it back, and refortify it, fixing the failures in their defenses that allowed the BoS to get in the first time, thus starting the whole cycle over again.

While they will easily be able to maintain the Boston-Logan airport base, adding The Institute on top of that would be a massive drain.

Not to mention the teleporter only works in The Commonwealth region unless you spend a long time charging it up to reach someplace like Far Harbor.

That DLC from NV also had a teleporter if I remember. It was more of a back to base thing, but if the BOS wanted a teleporter it would just be for moving stuff they found back to a base. There's a few instances of teleportation in this universe, and it won't be the last. The Institute wasn't really special for creating that. With its limits and upkeep, it doesn't seem worth the amount of resources to maintain.

The Big MT teleporter actually has a smaller range then The Institute's.

Big MT.s is a stones throw from Vegas, and, IIRC, the transportalponder doesn't work in other DLC areas like Zion.

The Institute's teleporter requires some charge up, but it can go much father once it is.

Gorillas even survived the war based on the Nuka World DLC. Odds are that was lazy asset use from the devs, but still.

Their homebase was very shiny and clean but not that impressive. And once people figured out where they were they were quite vulnerable due to lack of defenses. It would be cool if the Enclave or someone took over and used their resources better but they seemed very reliant on slave-labour to maintain their lifestyle and resources.

Best place to build?

I just installed that Conquest mod that allows you to build settlements pretty much wherever you want.
Thinking of making a watch tower similar to the one in Firewatch, have all my belongings and clutter in one room with 360 view of the commonwealth through the windows.

Tried building one in the city but i kept getting frame drops as i got more detailed, so any suggestions on a decent rural place to build up high?

The Railroad is the definition of unnecessary with regards to the four factions. Minutemen can be made sense because they're out for the common man and are a faction of the people. The Brotherhood of Steel cares about themselves, but they do care somewhat about the Commonwealth and its people, and have the technology and infrastructure to somewhat resemble a military. The Institute only cares for itself and its people, but offer you the ability to become the Director.

Meanwhile the Railroad basically don't care about the Commonwealth, cares only about freeing the synths from their shackles of slavery, and continue to do the same thing even though their freed synths sometimes become huge raiders that kill people. Like, they kind of mean well (freeing slaves), but at the same time, they're really, really dumb.

SP is dirt cheap because steam sale. FH is one of Bethesda's better DLC and it's pretty fucking big to boot. Automatron is fun enough, especially if you like robots and especially for it's price point. Nuka world is the most questionable of the dlc with real content, but it has it's appeal if you like amusement parks and being a raider. The rest of the DLC are pretty much Hearthfire 2.0 and should have been one big dlc.

Yeah, its called a static collection.

Taken straight from the wiki:

Static Collections
You can group Static Objects together into one Static Collection. Each Static Collection is a form in the editor and can be placed/used in the same way as a Static Object.

To Create a Static Collection select the Static Objects you want to be part of the collection and use Alt-O

Depends on my character but I generally start with a female. So skimp on Strength and Endurance, pump up Perception and Charisma. Trade off really low Luck for higher Intelligence.

So it'll looks something like this at the start:
STR - 2
END - 3
PER - 6
CHR - 8

AGL - 5
LCK - 1

Then go putting points into endurance as I travel more, agility as I fight more, etc.

I cheated. I only gave myself one full clip worth's of ammo, a combat knife and dropped the weapons from the vault. I just like starting with basic models of weapons/armor I enjoy.
Found myself a crossbow of a raider (modded) as my silent ranged weapon. I carry a hunting rifle for when I need more stopping power.

As for legendaries, it's a mixed bag. They are fun to take down generally but "enemy has mutated" is bullshit.

Even though the Recharger Pistol is better, I'll use the Rifle until level 20+ unless I really want to use the AER14 with the full FOOK - Project Nevada Convergence so it's even better.

Yeah I know it's not important, but in every single game where I can customize my character's appearance I spend more time on that than on the actual gameplay later.
I remember back in the days of Morrowind, Baldur's Gate and such when there was no fucking difference in the looks because of the shit graphics and yet I always made my character look great.

And now in FO4 I get to customize both my guy and his wife, so it takes double the time, and I have no experience in making female characters.

I imagine most suits were salvaged from BoS corpses, so were damaged mechanically, whilst being able to patch up the outer "shell" and at the time of Enclave war, BoS/NCR were fighting together, so NCR probs gave BoS all their recovered APAs as some kind of deal or some shit

No, I'm not playing Survival, my computer CTDs too much often these days and adding more mods to enable quicksaves and other stuff makes everything even more instable, so...I'm foring my player to eat, sleep, and other "real life" stuff.

It's a "tinkerer" build, so I usually spend hours building and expanding my settlements, (Sanctuary is our HQ before taking back the Castle)
crafting weapons, armors, power armors and robots.
I've spent a shameful number of skill points in CHR, so I usually talk instead of shooting, but that doesn't mean I'm not having my nice slice of fun with fire arms, both ballistic and energy weapons.
And I'm especially fond of using all kinds of bombs.

started out with I think 5str/2per/4end/3char/10int/3agi/1lck and I cheesed fence posts in sanctuary to get in a lot of quality of life perks before wanting to focus on pure damage. You only need the survival options mod.
It has on-board save settings along with everything else. Just tell it to do a timed save every 15 minutes (or 3/5/10/20/30 depending on your preferences) and a save on cell changes.
But use hard saves, not the autosave since that's most likely to cause issues.
The number of saves naturally runs high but just regularly clean your save folder and everything is fine.

Having your character eat is one thing. But suffering from fatigue from various sources while running low on ammo and realizing you are a long way from safety is another.

Sounds like a fun run. I personally love mines but I'm biased because I'm running stealth. (high INT/AGI, medium PER/END and low CHA/LUCK/STR.
My character just avoids whatever can be avoided through sneaking and only kills what's really in her way. I find that it keeps the wasteland more alive and eventually everything gets in your way at some point. And I don't pass up on bossfights if I have the explosives for it. If not, I just scrounge the neighbourhood until I have enough.

This crossbow mod made the playthrough though, it's just so fun to use while sneaking and it's well balanced.
Shame the reload animation isn't custom made but it fits well enough if you disregard the arrow appearing out of nowhere as you crank the bow.

I capped myself at 20 in NV/TTW.
Lowest level cap .esp I found was 50. I went up to 43 in my "JUST my game up due to constantly testing mods" run.
I've only started playing recently and I wasn't sure with the new levelling system.

I'll take a critical look at 30 and see where I stand, I can still limit myself there through console.

>How's that crossbow mod?
Forgot to talk about it in my initial reply. It's well balanced, hard to use but it goes hand in hand with stealth.
The bow isn't worth much in a straight up fight but it's silent, deadly with stealth crits and headshots.

Only minor flaw is the reload animation, which isn't bad at all but could be better. It's based on the laser musket animation so you crank your bowstring back. The arrow just magically appears.
There's a ton of mods and different ammo types (fire, bolts encased with .45, ...) that are all locked behind appropriate crafting perks.

I've never been one for quest mods or mod added worldspaces, but it legitimately looks pretty good

though, honestly, I'm more keen to salvage bits from it to chuck into the Mojave/Capital Wasteland (TTW) proper ala their vehicles and vertibird

Infinite Answer is trash. So many bugs with the main story line I couldn't even get Piper to show up so Diamond city was forever closed.

I kinda want to give "Start me up" a go but I'm afraid it'll fuck with quests down the line too.

I love how they still managed to make House's tower viewable from most of the wasteland.

personally, I begin them once I've delivered the chip to Mr. House, but there's really no right answer

if you're yet to do them ever, then definitely play in release order

DM > OWB > LR

HH can be slot in anywhere as it's less involved with the DLC story arc, but I tend to do it first with the intention of making some caps through work in the early game

Depends on your personal experience.
If you think you can handle it, Dead Money is doable at a very early level. The DLC strips your gear so you'll get usable stuff along the way.

20 is the recommended level I think. Last run I went in at under level 10. Prepare for a challenge though. It takes awhile to adjust to the Sierra Madre.

Play them in release order by the way.
