So I'm working on the inside of the house, I finished making the table/chairs/sofa, import them and...I don't think they fit? Compared to the picture of the outdoor area, it seems like the furniture I made is too highly detailed/realistic to fit. Am I wrong and just being overly critical?

draw the shadows to a clipping mask, then apply that mask to a fullscreen grey square. then you won't have overlapping shadows.

The only thing that matters is execution (and PR)
>>
>>164010248
There's no originality left in the world. The best you can do is pick up already existing ideas, mix them, then add a part of yourself (tm) to it so it'll have that unique touch.
>>
>>164010370
I call them "shadows" by abuse of language because I've made them to represent the part of the screen the character can't see. I could reuse this code for actual lightning though.
>>
>>164010834
If you have low standarts, sure.

>>164010858
Of course there is originality left, but I can't think of anything. And when I can think of something, then it's too hard to code for me.
>>
>>164010248
So make an iteration on a game you like, fixing what you believe to be flaws.
>>
>>164010925
Oh, gotcha, How about switching the column coor and the shadow color then?Dark gray columns and black for the invisible section might make more sense.
>>
>>164010983
I don't wanna do rip-offs I wanna create my own game, not just simply copy other games.
It must have an original core mechanic, but it's too hard to think of anything, or too hard to code.
>>
>>164011116
So it's too hard to come up with something, you're too good to do something somebody else did first, but you absolutely must make a game?

It really sounds like you don't want to make a game. There are a bunch of other hobbies.

OK, stop bitching and leave then.
People are trying to help you and all you do is complain about how impossible it is to do what you want to do.
If you don't believe you have enough creativity to do something original then it's probably true, because you have convinced yourself about it.
This general is about game dev, you will probably find more comfort discussing your limitations in /adv/

I just thought of something. Creativity is a bit Darwinian, isn't it?

New ideas are just copies of old ideas, like genes. The small original parts are like mutations in real life. The good ones are kept and the bad ones are left out.

I guess marketing money overrides bad mutations though.

Basically two ways to play:
>try to go behind enemies
>they suddenly wake up and shoot
>2 hits and you're gone
Or:
>stay back, prepare your shot, shoot twice
>bombs explode, enemies die
>do this for the rest of the game
It's tedious and repetitive, if you accidentally get too close they go berserk on you immediately, two shots (they have 100% precision) and you're gone.
50% of the times someone gets stuck or you fire too close to a wall so it bounces back to you and you die. When you reload you have to wait 10 seconds because the cursor won't show up and let you shit (I think it doesn't recognize the mouse at all).
Plus you're slow as shit and I still don't understand if that shift to dash/charge works.
And Windows thinks it's a malicious program everytime you click on it and you have to choose "Execute anyway."
Sorry man.

May I ask why would you kickstart the game when it's clear that you can finish it on your own? What would you need the money for?
>>
>>164013898
Yeah I think I worded it badly, basically the blue box thing (W8/10) or the white one with the yellow bar (W7) that tells you the source of the program is unknown.
Possibly GameMaker has a signing option when exporting that prevents this? I don't know, even if it has one it may still ask the user.
>>
>>164011420
What is this
>>
>>164014271
1) To have the chance to make the game better if it gains some money.

2) To have polishing money to polish the game further (Hire a freelancer/programmer) to help out on stuff that could use better programming. (I'm not a programmer and im making this thing on my own so I could use the help).

3) Expand the games content based on how much money thus bettering the game

4) Have money/get paid for my time working on it since im an indie with no publisher and I dont want to have to work at mcdonalds I wanna work on Bokube full-time.

5) Making my games have kickstarters gives them more marketing by default, being an indie with no publisher or marketing budget (bokube is made on $0.00) kickstarter helps normies to see the game.

Not gonna ask for much really probably like $2000 as a baseline for the amount to get a freelancer for the stuff I want help with and then if im lucky exceed that and make stretch goals.

Kikestarter is good for professionals who do not have the money to work on what they want to work. Professionals often can not do the kind of game they want to do, because they got to live from something.

But when just someone already works on what he wants to work, then it's just begging for money for nothing. He obviously could do the game also alone. What he does is just begging for money. It's the same as going on the streets and begging people for money.

>>
>>164015576
What is this logic?
Professionals are PRO because they get paid on their work and most of them have publishers to back their shit, AAA devs making kickstarters is more disgusting than an indie who makes $0 and wants to turn their passion into a fulltime career.

The whole point of kickstarter was to "Kickstart" little guys in the first place. The "They got to live from something" applies more to an indie trying to get by using kickstarter in the first place than a professional who has professional/company backing or else they wouldn't be called a professional.
>>
>>164015823
This. The shenmue kickstarter is my favorite example of "Professionals" mudding kickstarter when they didn't need it and had sony already publishing them.

>>
>>164015823
>a professional who has professional/company backing
You retard do not realize that just because you are a professional doesn't mean you can do whatever the hell you want. Kikestarter is good for pros who want to make niche games, something like Pillars of Eternity for example. Games which don't sell well anymore nowadays, and couldn't get produced otherwise probably.

But when just random people use kikestarter for funding their hobby, then it's just begging for money, nothing more.
>>
>>164015576
There is a difference here I mean he already said

>>164014551
>I dont want to have to work at mcdonalds I wanna work on Bokube full-time.

As much as we shit on kickstarters here. Cavern Kings kickstarter has STILL not came through on promises.
>>
>>164016009
Low bar if you don't want to earn any money. There's 50k games published on the playstore every month and you think your shit will be played. Not trying to shit on you for no reason but you're not being realistic.
>>
>>164016013
How is it begging for money when you show people a product that they want and they give you money to help you churn it out faster?
>>
>>164016104
I've made a few other similar games in android and they got a couple hundred plays.

I think it'll come down to better search optimization and icons, something I'll try new with this.

I'll say the mobile game is possible, but it depends on the marketing skills you got.

I could save a lot of time by just doing this, exporting as midi and putting better instruments to it.
>>
>>164018428
There's a container object which holds the shared rig and a sub object for each limb, as well as a bunch of scripts and controllers.

Each sub object has stuff like colliders and materials and a SkinnedMeshRenderer which I take from a prefab and set its relevant bones to those in the shared rig.

As long as the animations were recorded against the same rig, the whole body *should* deform fairly naturally with any combo of limbs. The question is how much freed I should give in terms of individual limb scaling.

For a hermetic magic system, what's the best logical explanation for warriors and the like.

For example a warrior who can lift up a boulder, or slash multiple things at the same time, or extend the length of their weapon.

This is all magic, but these people aren't mages and can't do spells.

Should I just not include them?

The world has a mixture of genetic and hermetic magic, meaning magic is a science, but only those who have the genes can actually use it.

I thought about making warriors and other magical types be carriers of the gene, but it was not expressed so they can "sub-consciously" use magic through training. Is this reasonable or would it make your roll your eyes

Mainly "complete dominance" and "incomplete dominance". In your example I would declare magicians as having complete dominance magic genes and warriors having incomplete dominance magic genes. Plebs would have no magic genes.
>>
>>164022506
i'm not trolling. he's asking for an explanation for why warriors can use spells even though they're not wizards. i tell him it's because normal people can buy spells from wizards. then he asks for rules around the usage of such scrolls. i tell him normal people can only use those scrolls if they're virgins, which i think makes for a good story point.

i think you're just mad because you're not a virgin anymore so you can't use any spells. should have thought about that before you had sex with your mother.

Happens to me often. Especially after game jams and events like that. The most incompetent ones are always the most eager to team up and work in your project.
Honesty is the best answer here, just tell them it's a personal project and you don't want to team up. If they keep bothering you ask them what is it they think they can bring to the table, and when they say Ideas, you explain to them that ideas are worth nothing and that you get 100 ideas while taking a shit every morning.
>>
>>164026414
Let's be honest you dumb fucking frogposter, everyone avoids teaming up here not because they don't have any friends, but because it wouldn't give any advantage whatsoever.
The scope of 99% of our projects are completely coverable by only one person, more people would slow things down given the fact that we're all novice/intermediate at our artistic and programming skills.
We already have little free time or not enough to waste on gamedev, and the schedules would conflict as we're not a company and physically absent. The quality of the game would instead go down and so the profits.

The objectively impossible "more men gets the job done" thing was already explained by Fred Brooks, it's called the "Mythical Man-Month".
>giving more manpower to a small or slowly dying project will only increase its distance to completion because the time taken by getting adjusted and managing the team interrelationships will slow things down.
Too many cooks spoil the broth.

Im actually considering doing the whole 3d model and draw over each frame thing. But it feels kind of like a waste of time if you arent a wizard at pixel art already or just DRAWING already.

Apart of me thinks I should go full on pre-rendered (Like pic related) but even that needs good 3d skills to render I assume. No art style can cover for poor style concepts. And I'm not going to lie to myself my Style concepts dont draw the eye so I'm too shit to take full advantage of the look.
>>
>>164027932
most early games didn't "draw over" the 3d, it was just straight up generated from the model and scaled down as appropriate

thats why they looked so janky in MK and Fallout and so on, it was the compression from a screenshot of a full size high res model

Using a reference model for rotoscoping is a decent idea if you're slow at animating or bad at perspective, but pre-rendering is just pointless these days unless you're deliberately going for a 'retro' look or you're developing for some shitty platform like mobile or tablets (don't do that).
>>
>>164028037
Exactly. Everybody at his software company, just like every company and every person after it and in this very moment, had the same skill level as the guy in the next cubicle.
It's highly improbable that one of my friends has divine art skills and gets everything done in 2 seconds. We're all small fries.
Imagine starting with a computer, food stamps for a month and electricity. To get it actually done faster, the second collaborator (with pay in the form of future profit) would have to be better than me in a second field. Artists get paid, but taking in count that you have "help" in some form (money), it's kind of like cheating in the whole and unwanted.

A few things in the scene are just free stuff from the Unity asset store being used as placeholder, so it's nothing impressive. I have a 3D and 2D artist, but they do a bit of both so we're pretty lacking in original assets due to time, unfortunately. The shader and grass textures on the model are probably the only thing we have that's our own aside from all the code in it, hope to have a lot of those placeholder models out within the month, though.

Are you unable to see that the fundamental process of creating that image started with "take a photo of a guy" and that maybe they couldn't find a guy with sick robot arms?

Sprites like that aren't generally rotoscoped, and are only touched up or slightly edited at best. Shit like KoF may be rotoscoped as a reference, but it's just that -- a reference. Animu fighter sprites might seem slick but they're probably not rotoscoped. Pic related.

I want to make a colony game where the AI isn't stupid.
But then the player won't have much to do.

For example, the AI will see that they need food, and sees that there is a place to get food from. So this AI will go and pick up food, and then place it in the storage.
By itself.
I guess this AI could be a gatherer or something, and you have to assign this AI guy to do that.
...
any ideas?
I don't want to have to design the food for the AI to pick up, I don't want the player to tell it to drop it at the storage. I just want to say: "you are in charge of getting food" and then he will do everything else.
Is this... boring?

>Basically it was all ideaguy/devguy quarrels?

If only. Idea guy quarrels were only dangerous if the idea guys formed a clique and could exert pressure on whichever productive members they were in with.
The really bad ones happened when some key member either had a """great new idea""" on the toilet one time and loved it so much that they would do absolutely everything to get it into the game or else, up to and including leaving the team or deliberately trying to break it up if they got overruled.
The absolute worst one was when I was working on an open source mod and the primary programmer decided that instead of making a spiritual sequel to a very popular hardcore, high skill ceiling deathmatch FPS HL1 mod, we were now making a casual FPS that with deathstreak rewards, no K:D ratio, no headshots and six guns (original mod had ~30). When the rest of the team pointed to the design document and shook their head, he seized the source code and "finished" the mod himself with programmer art then pushed it to steam.
We went from 1k peak players per day to 50 overnight and that was that.

The sad thing is that he's still apparently updating it for the 30 or so lost souls who play.

There isn't much to look at in space. I actually find vasts amounts of nebulae and meteors in a backdrop unbelievable. Probably just me though. Are you familiar with C# or C++? You can do 3D in both but for AAA quality 3D, UE4 /appears/ like the better option. However, making a AAA 3D game in Unity is completely possible. Since you are in an amateur thread, I assume you won't even need that much power or be capable of making models, animations, and textures of that caliber on your own. So don't worry about it. Whatever you're most comfortable with is better. Plus >>164033058

Really depends on what kind of 3D game.

Anything with lower required graphics you should do Unity.

IF and that's a pretty big IF you have the skills to create high quality 3D assets, then UE4 is easier to make full use of them.

UE4 also has built in Visual Scripting, but Unity's paid Visual Scripting options are more numerous and a lot better/easier to use. They also aren't as slow as UE4's.

Added in scale cameras for tool in creating background objects. It's the same concept as the 3D skybox cameras used in Valve games. Not sure yet how I'm going to use it, but it's there if I need it and it's super simple to write.
>>
>>164032213
Take a look at how other games do it.
>>
With yesterday's item combination system done I'll finally go back to implementing combat.
I'll probably start by creating a stupid blocky dummy with the entire enemy system (enemy energy, mana, stamina, whatever) going in the background.
Then I'll write down a couple standard animations for all the enemies, then animate those for one of these two fuckers, then stuff that nicely into a state machine, then make a behaviour tree and hope that shit actually works.

Should probably think a bit more about all of this first. Especially that enemy system in the background.

I got no friends that are interested in gay shit like creating video games.

On a more serious note: My friends are all programmers and none of them are really interested. In my entire time at university I have only met one or two people who actually cared for vidya at all.
It was a really strange an unexpected situation to be honest. Only very few people had the passion for private projects. And those who had that either slacked off all the time or did stuff like home automation and microcontrollers.

And every time I met with people at game jams they were like artsy fartsy faggots that didn't really make interesting games but gimmicky bullshit that focused on some "message" instead of actual gameplay. Not to forget that lots of them were actual hardcore political leftist activists. I mean thats probably part of going to a game jam at an art university (not the university I visited luckily) but I got no fucking time for that shit man. I wanna make games like Looking Glass studios, not that ankle deep armchair philosophers garbage featuring whatever's the current trend in artsy visuals.
Shit, just an hour ago I checked out a game that was made by a studio located not to far away from here.
It was basically a walking simulator with some adventure elements based around, I shit you not, interracial gay relationship in the 19th century.

I just wanna make fucking King's Field, jesus christ.

thanks! hopefully you'll be able to play a demo in a few days (dd12)

some ingredients will be gated by how much you can lift (you won't be able to pick up trees at the start)

others are obtained by using things on other things, so you need to find out those combinations first

for all of them you'll get info on their effect the first time you use them

getting a perfect score will be a bit trickier than just tossing stuff in the cauldron

for people using UE4, I need advice:

I have a tree, and I have apples. I want the trees to have apples, programatically in it.
I don't mind placing them manually at the start, or using instantiation, but they should be re-spawned after a certain time... so I need them to be part of the Tree blueprint.

I come from Unity, and in there I would have a "Gameobject applePrefab" assigned in the editor, and then instantiate the apple where I like. I can make sub-gameobjects in the tree for the positions for example, and spawn them there, or I could also create a tree with the apples in the editor, and the tree will then save the location of all the children, and replenish them later.

But I have no idea about how to go about doing something like this in unreal...

Add the apples to the tree in the blueprint. Or make the tree spawn the apple actor on the locations where you want them.

I would probably make an actor AApple that you could pick up and an actor ATree. Then simply in tree's BeginPlay event I would spawn those apples where I need them to be (which could be a bunch of dummy components used as spawn points). Finally, use Tick event to spawn more apples when some spawn point is missing one.

Problem is not that they are idiots. Not at all even. Most informatics students I know are actually pretty clever.
The problem is that all of them - and I mean all of them - are stuck in the CS mindset that comes with one huge problem:

Wanting to do stuff for the "programmers cred"

This is the worst shit and you gotta punch it out of people wherever you see it.

It will cause them to do EVERYTHING from scratch (and as a result completely underestimate the project of course).

It will cause them to use assembly or C on a project that would be faster and better with an object oriented language.

It will cause people to implement idiotic new solutions to problems that have already been solved a billion times. Of course their solutions will be bugged and untested and half-baked and unfinished and probably ignore 90% of the challenges that are still coming but HEY, at least they made it themself!

It breeds a shitton of bad habits that can potentially fucking wreck projects.

And it's not even a matter of education.
I even know a PhD that literally to this day struggles with this shit.

The other week we had a great idea for a little mobile game and I say "Hey you know what? I'd use unity on that, cause that shit has the necessary platform support etc etc"
We discussed it a bit and I basically ended up downloading fucking lumberyard (cause "unity meh, that's just a bit of click click here and there and it's not really programming and you cant do shit with that"), just to see that that thing is absolutely unfit for the idea.
And you gotta imagine: This situation is an improvement over the normal process, because this time AT LEAST I got the guy so far as to actually consider an engine.

And then I mean it's not much of a surprise that you end up with a demotivated team, that does its dayjob and then says good night to any kind of private project.

The right mix between professional experience and the proper mindset is rare as fuck.

you know what's weird? when people say that "this land belonged to the natives". what authority exactly gave america to the "native" americans? their only claim to fame is that they were there first. so fuck them. good on us for taking their land and turning it into something great. this entire notion is especially offensive when you consider that nowadays, all the libs are screaming and begging for immigrants. we're supposed to give up these humongous empires our ancestors build over millenia from fucking nothing to sandpeople? ok but then why am i supposed to feel sorry about native americans losing their lands to europeans? fuck this entire notion that land belongs to you because you were there first. the developed world should
conquer the undeveloped world so this planet can realise its potential.

So I'm writing a simple 2D engine, with the hopes of having something like a more specialized Love2d.

Right now I'm concerning myself with input. How should I expose it to the Lua scripting side? Simply as SDL spits it out? Like a table with the states of relevant data: for mouse just a position, a click is_down sort of thing and for keyboard a current state of all keys and edge-triggered pressed and released states?

Then leave it to the user to implement binding and whatnot in the game itself?

Or perhaps have a required "key_binding" file that is read into the engine and then only those given keys/mouse/gamepad states are given to the scripting vm?

Which would you prefer?
>>
>>164046716
Well, to be fair the old castlevania art isn't that impressive to begin with, so you can't do that much by using them as references.

If anything, try to base your colors off the 1 or 3, the 2 just did everything wrong with that.

That said, I will tell you what I like. I have abstract inputs (so things like "jump" and "move left", not "space" or "left stick -X") that are split into events and states. States can be polled for their value directly while events come in a stream. These abstract inputs are bound to concrete inputs by the game and can be changed on the fly. There are also combinators for binding so that you can e.g. set a threshold for an analog input to fire an event or turn two buttons into an axis.

The engine should make it easy to hook up abstract inputs to concrete inputs (also in a player-directed way, e.g. a way to wait for an input to be used in an input binding menu), and provide some basic combinators like the ones I mentioned.

Hey, I've actually been interested in a project like this before.

There's ProjectPorcupine (google it) on github that's a well known community/open source project trying to make something similiar to Rimworld in space.

But it turned out horribly, bad data structure, not utilizing Unity's ECS system, no real good programming etiqute. And even then, it still doesn't work how RimWorld does in the slightest.

It's a shame because it was Quill18's longest running series, but ultimately it's a train wreck.

Went off tangent, but a lot of it is sitll good to learn from, and I recommend taking a look at the "job" classes.

Because friendship is a joke. Abandoned at the first sign of problem.
It is the kind of dependancy that stops you from standing on your own.
In the end, friends are nothing but dead weight.
You don't need friends to make a game, you need freedom.
To be free you need to be alone.

Just some ideas for details, have different orbital planes and elliptical orbits. Have planets with many different polar axis and rate of rotation.
You have luminosity for stars but no spectral class. Theoretically stars can be any mixture of luminosity and spectral class.

Thanks for the ideas. I had considered elliptical orbits, but not the rest.

Luminosity is actually for the planet, depends on star spectral class (which is displayed at the top) and orbit radius. It partially determines the "Life" rating (Goldlilocks zone).

There are also other "hidden" planet stats, e.g. presence of a core and magnetic poles, both of which depend on composition and mass of the planet.

Should players with different versions be able to play with each other? That seems like a risky way to do it, so I would avoid that all together.

you can vote for multiple things, so people probably did it as a joke

but seriously if you are the butthurt person in question, we cannot fight your autism over "horny nodevs making lewd jam" etc. etc.

go make a itch.io jam page for mecha if comfy jam upsets you so much. you win.

How many people actually write up from glew or glut instead of using UE or something like that.

I wrote a small project using glew and now I'm trying to write classes to make it easier to manage more complex scenes

all right, my mistake, there's just been this one militant poster against a lot of the recent

Handmade Hero is a good start but if you're not finding yourself interested in it then I would suggest you stick with higher level libraries, frameworks, or engines.

I have my reasons for sticking to a low level (mostly because I like the challenge but also because I want precise control) but I can't guarantee you will be able to motivate yourself like that.

So, how long does it take to go from never having done pixel art and being shitty at art in general to making something slightly less ambitious than Hyper Light Drifter? Or creating combat animations like EITR/Ruin of the Reckless?

Nah the animations for that game aren't really that difficult if you look closesly. Screen shake, a bunch of randomized "dust" effects and 5 frames on a tornadoe will you get you there.

>>
>>164058196
Let's say something less ambitious, like Dungeon Souls? They seem like basic-ish tilesets?
>>
>>164058219
I'm guessing you're making unity, change Update to CallUpdate()

Then have another object have a coroutine that calls a set number of objects per update.
>>
>>164058395
Dungeons would probably take two months of just messing around a couple times a week to get, or a month of hard work.

At least to copy the sprite style, don't forget there is a alot of shader work, lighting effects, and general particle effects going on at the same time as well
>>
>>164058219
The optimal way involves estimating how long updating each object will take (and correcting that estimate as you go) and then splitting them up based on that. You can simplify that by giving each object an approximate, constant cost (like 1 out of 3 options, cheap, moderate, expensive), or you can just split them up uniformly and randomly and hope that the randomness at least smooths it out a bit.

That's more optimistic than I'd imagined. I thought 3 months at 4 hours a day for the entire art style, including lighting, shaders, etc.

Thanks, that's encouraging

Hey guys,
You guys probably won't remember but I've been working on a free & open source project for a while and posted it here 1/2 months ago.
It was a personal project and I worked on that 3-4 hours every day after 8 hours of work. Kept doing that for 3-4 months I believe.
Then some guys mocked me here for falling the open source meme and not putting it on asset store for moniez. All I had was "open source is fun" back then.
Well, that project got me a remote job in a decent sized company. And now I'm making more than what I could have ever made from asset store, in a month.

But my point is, keep working hard and always try to do your best. It's possible to make it into bigger scenes, one way or another. Work hard, write good code, write lots and lots of code. Good luck!

generally speaking, it could be anything.

I haven't implemented that basic "getting shot/injured" animation in game yet, but I feel like it would add to the game.

>>
>>164059575
Don't really have a good answer for this yet. It should be fairly trivial to change, and I feel like I can add more information / buttons / things in the empty space.

Have the idea is that it's a turn based shmup, and so too wide of a play area might betray that feeling.

At the very least, width of the area is not one of my concerns right now.

Develop a virus to tackle spesific systems, gain knowledge about systems by sending in spies, once you send in the virus it switches to a megaman style action game where the way you developed your virus determines the different forms you have available.
>>
>>164060006
It's vertical because I dreamed it up as a mobile game and it just made more sense that way.

>>164060104
There should be a number of units by the time I'm done. Just infantry would be boring.

>>164060162
the animation, or the game in general? If it's just the animation that can be changed. If it's the game, well... I can't help you there.
