Hey, I just got back into the game after seeing all the RDM reveals, used to play one in XI for a long time so I'm really excited to see them in XIV.

Also excited about whatever the rest of the job(s) will be.

I just upgraded to heavensward and I'm currently updating my game, I've got a level 50 BLM/WHM
Are there any "beginners tips and tricks" for heavensward that I should be aware of?
I know about PotD and it seems like a really good way to level alt classes in between dungeons. I'm also interested in maxing out the crafting classes before the next expansions.

What's your general "returning players" tips?

My autistic view about how Red Mage is going to work is that it's going to be to SMN like DRG is to MNK

RDM will have access to a trait allowing it to cast [Raise] in battle. And hopefully it has access to the Healer LB3 like BRD did at launch..


RDM cannot be capable of full healing, but just little gimmick things to say "Hey RDM can kind of do healing stuff, too"

that would be enough to make it feel kind of like XI Red Mage. Almost.

Some of these quests are retarded. For example, Rogue Guild's Dainty Dilemma and quest before that. First you go in to the guild to chat with a guy. Then the quest requires you to travel outside quite far away, kill few mobs. After this you go back to guild. Then next step requires you to go outside again. And go back. And out and back. Limsa Lominsa is such architectural disaster that navigating there is pain in the ass. Even with the teleports it's fucking annoying. Who thought this was a good idea?

Does DRK pretty much need a ninja to optimize?

My group is pretty average but we're all pretty damn geared. We have DRK/WAR/SCH/AST/MNK/DRG/BRD/BLM and the DRK gets aggro ripped off him really often, especially in 12. Sometimes somebody just gets a shitload of crits or whatever and you can't really do anything about that, but our options at this point seem to be to acquire a ninja or force our poor DRK to sit in Grit.

A NIN really helps out a DRK, yeah. I'd say it helps them out the most because the enmity generation they can give the DRK and reduce on on someone else is so nice. Their DPS rotation is the only tank one that has 0 enmity modifiers.

Excalibur's definitely cool, so is Aegis, even though I don't really like fancy weapons usually. I think my favourite probably has to be Apocalypse though, in retrospect I definitely wish I had gotten that instead even though I don't like playing Summoner at all. Yoichi Bow is pretty nice, too.

Amongst the newest step I'd probably have to give it to the Axe or the Greatsword though, with the Black Mage weapon a close 3rd.

Everyone needs a Ninja to optimize, but yeah, DRK is probably the most affected if you don't have one.

The best thing you can do is to start having your Warrior do an Unchained opener to pull, and then have the Dark Knight provoke off of them when it's convenient. That builds up enough of an aggro lead that you can generally go for at least a few minutes without needing to account for enmity.

If you don't have a Ninja then you can't really get away with never using Grit (and if your DPS are equally or more skilled than your tank, it's pretty dicey even with a Ninja).

Rather than just sit in it forever though, there are ways that you can minimize the DPS loss:

- A lot of the damage you lose by toggling on Grit to do a Power Slash combo mid-fight is in the GCD you lose to turn Grit on in the first place. If you instead turn Grit on during enforced downtime (say, during the QTE portions of A11, Divine Judgement in A12, or as you're moving away from the boss for a time stop), then you don't lose much DPS at all.

- During parts of the fight where you need a lot of mitigation anyway, turning Grit on can help out with mitigation even as you use it to build an enmity lead. For example any time that you'd be using DA Dark Mind, you can instead use your MP to turn Grit on, and then use a non-DA Dark Mind (Grit + Non-DA DM is roughly equal mitigation to DADM).

Between those two things, you can usually find pretty good places to turn Grit on without sacrificing too much, and as long as you can generate enough of a lead to get you to the next Grit-friendly part of the fight, you shouldn't have to sit in it overly long.

I've copied and pasted this if it comes up again, thanks. Our DRK is competent, but he's greedy as fuck for DPS and drops grit every chance he can get. Of course me and my co healer are pretty damn greedy too, so I can't fault him too much for getting flattened when we're both in clerics, but the constant aggro loss is crazy because I know he's power slashing and shit he just can't hold it.
