Going from VII to RB3 w/ Fortify Enemies turned on is brutal. Even though I'm probably overleveled a little with +HP accessories, some mob bosses and especially story bosses can do anywhere from 1/5 to nearly 1HKOing my charas. RB3's battle system is nice and challenging but also obnoxious and outdated compared to VII. Solo EXE drives for characters don't even exist until you unlock them by doing 100 SP moves, then unlocking the plan for them so you're pigeonholed into using 1 set party composition for the entire fucking game. VII may be easier, but the game made you fully appreciate the strengths of all the CPUs and Candidates in the 2nd arc. You won't wind up with overpowering statistics because you fought a lot of enemies, instead you gained a useful ability. Story-required battles would be the only way your neps would gain levels. In order to keep a post-game intact, Colosseum battles then become the mark upon which you gain levels once you've cleared the story, while quests to unlock further skill slots open up as well.

Your strategic options rise rather than your statistics.

There is a DLC that bring quests for Level 999. Very tough since mobs have tons of HP and they could one-shot you everytime.

There are still memes every so often, but it's rarer and more fitting. The translation as a whole is far more solid and suited to the original tone of the writing.

Basically, there are still issues if you are especially picky, but it's much closer to what you'd expect from playing R;B1. It's one of the best translation jobs the series has gotten.
