I've been thinking about the Fulcrum and its atrocious service record.

In both Desert Storm and Yugoslavia, there was a massive imbalance in numbers of aircraft.

2 MiG-29s would scramble against fucking armada of US aircraft, and they of course got bodied.

Question is, in a more evenly matched confrontation, say 1985's USSR vs NATO, in which the Soviets would have huge number of Fulcrums swarming everywhere, would they do better?

I feel like the Fulcrum would do well in its role as a frontline tactical fighter in large numbers, and was unfairly forced into situations it had absolutely zero chance of succeeding in. (I know war is not fair and that's why the US did exactly that, just saying)

I believe that the MiG-29s poor showing in both conflicts against the US, but more importantly the Flanker showing it's superiority during the Ertrian-Ethiopian war, were major factors in post-USSR Russia's decision to go with the Flanker and it's dirivitives to form the backbone of the Russian Air Force.

If the claims that most of the Flankers kills against Fulcrums during the Ertrian-Ethiopian war were made by Russian mercenaries, then I feel like that held even more weight.

You had Russian Su-27 pilots with actual live combat experience against MiG-29s. You have to wonder if that kind of specific info was brought back to Russia, or if that's why they were there in the first place...

The MiG-29 is an amazing fighter, but the problem is that it's competition is just so much better.

The F-15C was way over designed to combat future Russian fighters and it shows.

Obviously the quality of the pilots factors into this a ton but let's assume quality Russian Pilots.

The MiG-29 just can't carry enough missiles and doesn't have enough range to compete against the Su-27.

The Eagle far outclasses the Fulcrum in pretty much everything, the only real advantage the MiG has is the helmet mounted sight which they realistically would never even get in range to use.

In a mid 80's scenario I'm sure the Fulcrum would do ok, but they're just gonna get outflown by the Eagle in the end, even without AMRAAMs. A lot would depend on whether or not these fights are happening within range of either sides air defenses and ground and air based radars.

For anyone interested, Rogue System is interesting, if nothing else.

It's utterly threadbare on content, it's got one ugly-ass spaceship and a handful of missions, most of which are tutorials, and the actual flight physics are nothing new if you've done anything with, say, Kerbal Space Program or Elite: Dangerous, but it's got a ton of systems management stuff in it, most of it about not depleting your batteries and mixing oxidizer with propellant at appropriate temperatures.

I really hope they add a ton more content, though, the idea of there being one solar system with a single space station and three planets is a bit depressing for a space game

Rogue System is what happens if you take Elite Dangerous and limit it to one planetary system, throw some KSP in and put a fancy engine on it that runs off of the applied theory of nonsense, when you mix the bullshittium with the unobtanium. Join a squadron that was in theatre at the time and fly missions as a wingman, the war progresses, get promoted based on how well you do, fly more missions but now as a flight lead, get new planes on the date the squadron got new planes, transfer to a new base on the date they transferred, etc, etc.

It tracks the stats of all the pilots on both sides in theatre, most of which would be fictional but a few would be historical ases.

They also mentioned the possibility of when you get promoted enough being able to plan your own missions.
