I just downloaded a psp emulator and am currently playing mhfu with an Xbox One controller.

There's zero help at all in this game and it's punishing. I just blew a quarter of my zenny on two pickaxes that broke after 3 hits. I had to use a potion in the kill 5 giaprey quest. I spend half the time scouring the map for gathering points because there's no helpful popup that tells me if I can gather there or not. Also, all of the weapons don't have easy to use flashy combos.

Is this the epitomy of monster hunter? When will I ever git gud in this game?

The modern games have many more QoL changes made, especially third gen and it having popups near gathering nodes in your case, as well as significantly less chip damage and more developed movesets for weapons. MH4U is probably about as newbie friendly as it gets in this regard. Portable 3rd is as new as it gets when it comes to what you can emulate, though with a fan translation. There's a link to a pre-patched ISO in the pastebin.

Otherwise, there is plenty of not very interesting things to get yourself sorted with before you start fighting the larger assholes.

If you really want to play FU then go to the training school before doing anything. It teaches you the basic and pays you with free mixing stuff such as honey and paintball seed (both of which is important as you advance) and a little bit of money. If MHO is a 2nd gen game but have better animations than MHX (for certain cherrypicked animations), then it's not a matter of being "underpinned by a decade old game". The newer Frontier content has better animations because presumably because they grew quite popular the past few years, their budget also grew proportionally. And it is not their priority to update old animation (mainline too really) like what MHO did.

I get this too and every time I've posted/asked about it it gets ignored, and all google searching comes up with 3-5 year old bullshit that is either irrelevant or doesn't solve the problem.

For now I've figured out if you attempt to open the image in a new tab (it'll load forever or give a connection error) and replace "is.4chan" with "images.4chan" at the start of the URL it'll load the image or webm just fine. Absolute Readiness is a Hunter Art that functions the same as Adept's special dodge animation. It's a lengthy animation that renders you invulnerable for the duration, while also restoring weapon sharpness. It also has a short charge time, meaning it can be used extremely often.

Hyper monsters are cancer because they're monsters with stats above G-rank despite Gen being a High Rank game. Hyper monsters have insane amounts of HP, attack and defense (far higher than their G-rank equivalents), and certain glowing body parts can be charged up to make them hit even harder. Hypers also don't get exhausted at all, which when combined with their greatly increased aggression, leads to very tedious hunts. Hyper Blangonga is one good example that highlights just how bad Hyper monsters are.

Hyper monster materials are also required for a number of weapons.

Indeed it is a high rank game but the endgame gear in gens is tuned perfecly for hypers. Wear silver sol or dreadking or any endgame set and go get hit by a normal high rank monster. It will do fuckall for damage. Not only that, but if using an appropriate weapon, you'l probably kill it in no time with very little effort. Only hyper monsters will actually test your gear and not only that, but your skill as well. This is obviously just my experience, but it takes me just as long to kill a hyper as it does to kill a g rank monster in 3U/4U.

I find it funny how people complain about how easy gen is but how hard hypers are.

It's a very select few number of Hyper monsters that go above and beyond, but for example, G rank Monoblos has 10000 HP.
Hyper Zin, Silver Los, Rajang, and Jho all have over 10k HP as well, Jho going all the way to around 15000 on average. According to Kiranico at least.

But really the fact that they have those HP pools compared to the level of equipment you can make is just crazy for something that's not a super quest.

Hypers would be more fun if they were a "candle that burns twice as bright lasts half as long" case, where they're capable of doing huge damage and have different timings on their attacks, but take large amounts of damage on their glowing spots and aren't bloated to an extreme degree(like most hypers are)

But instead, they're all that and a bag of chips. Bloated, same defenses, different timings, the hyper points even change throughout the hunt. The only thing that changes in the hunter's favor is faster Art Gauge filling when you hit the most dangerous parts of the monster.

I sincerely hope that they change their philosophy on Hyper Monsters come XX. Not just to make it easier, but to make it more fair and more fun.

Otherwise yeah, I do think there will be a Moxie meta. Or worse, adept DB will be the safest and most effective choice because it's hard for a monster to punish you.
