I'd honestly say it's worth it. I came in with almost no expectations(Game gets shitposted to high hell) but gave it a shot anyways and after an okay early game, it gets great. Combat is lots of fun, dungeons are more than just hallways(looking at you, FFXIV) and there's lots of build variety. It can be a bit overwhelming at the start with the vast amount of things you can put skill points into but once you get the hang of it, you'll love it.

Leveling is great, but they recently changed the zones from leveled to anyone can quest wherever they want. No longer like wow where it's durotar 1-10 and whatnot.

Dungeons are good fun, but there's definitely a meta for DPS. Tanking can be done by anyone and is real rewarding, healing can kind of be done by anyone but templar healing (equiv of holy priest) is far and away better than everyone else, but it's still quite fun.

You'll want to join a guild for trials, but it's not hard and there are heaps of players doing PvE content. PvP is absolute cancer atm and a lot of people have gone back to PvE.

Unfortunately, there are a few skills available from pvp that are kind of required for trials. It doesn't take too long to get them and for the most part you can just roll with a pvp group and play support, but tanks, healers and melee dps benefit from said skills.
If you plan to play magic DPS, no pvp needed at all though.

Got the game for Christmas, haven't played Skyrim or other Elder Scrolls in months, been playing WoW Legion for the last while and I want to make my first character a Mage DPS.

Is this a stupid/painful idea for a first character?

Any advice for a Mage DPS? I read the beginner's guide, but I would love any and all bits of advice

Not even an exageration. In my adventures in thievery (and failures because lolrng) I've encountered at LEAST three vampires and one werewolf, with another possible one but the possible one I can actually get a 100% pickpocket rate on and I value money more than confirming that he is a werewolf.

it's a good ult, destruction staff ult might outclass it now, but it's worth getting high mages guild for the empower buff when you cast inner light.

I leveled mages guild while hunting skyshards, but yeah it's a bit of a pain. I use shooting star heaps on my magNB along with soul harvest; the ulti generation is great and I can shit out the ult every 1-2 trash packs.

Merry Christmas, your best bet will be rolling a sorcerer. Levelling with pets is great fun, the learning curve is fine for sorc and they're either best or second best magic DPS depending on who you ask.

Dragonknights are decent mages, but there's heaps of DoT management and less nuking. Templars have a stupidly powerful execute but are pretty boring IMO. If you think you might want to heal eventually, go Templar, if maybe you like breathing fire and possibly want to respec for magic tanking, DK is excellent, if you want to have your value questioned every single time you enter a dungeon go magNB, if you just want to kill things with magic, go sorc

Morphed into Aggressive Warhorn Is the main one for when your tank isn't slotting it or you're running 1 heal 3 DPS, I usually always have it slotted

Somewhat new to the game, is it a requirement to have sword and board to tank due to the taunt skill that they have, or can other weapons be used for tanking as well?
From the two handed skill tree, the Brawler upgrade gives you a shield, and I noticed you can alternate between it and heavy attacks (to regenerate stamina) and keep it up quite a lot.
I also went with heavy armor and about 1/3 of my attribute points in health, rest in stamina, and I'm an Imperial Sorcerer. Noticed the cancer monkey scamp is pretty good at grabbing agro, but I'm guessing since it's a magicka ability, it won't scale well since I'm focusing on stamina instead.

tl;dr anyone see people tank with something other than sword and shield, and is it remotely viable, such as for casual group content?

no, not due to the taunt skill, but due to the fact that no other weapon will give you as much damage mitigation as a SnB. and for a tank you want as much damage mitigation as you can reasonably get. you *can* tank with any weapon, because there is another ranged taunt skill in undaunted skill tree, not tied to any specific weapon, but you will be a fucking shit tank and basically just forget about doing any serious content. not only because you will be much squishier, but because most people won't even keep you in a group.

It can be done for easy content if you are overgeared or have a lot of CP points. Otherwise expect the healer to carry you.

Honestly it's not worth the hassle. You'll also be struggling to stay alive while doing poor dps since you are in heavy armor and have points in health. To answer your second question, heavy armor is significant dps loss if you are not tanking.

What you can do is go heavy armor and s&b for tanking then have a second skillbar with 2h and what not for questing and clearing trash mobs in dungeons. At end game, tanks will want two bars of s&b, but 99% of content, you can have a dps bar.

This way, you also get to stick with heavy armor for your damage if you like that feel. You will always be tanky first, but since staminatanks invest all points into stamina anyways (which you should do, health points are a big trap unless your build specifically asks for it), you will do decent damage for questing/soloing purposes.

Magic Dragon knight actually plays like fire Mage if I remember correctly with dot and fire stuff in general. It also features earth magic.

Templar plays like a holy priest or paladin caster type I suppose

Nightblades plays like a blood Mage.

They can all go magic, and all are viable for 99% of the content. The differences between classes only come into play once you are fully geared and champion leveled at end game. Just play whichever feels right to you. Who knows what patches will do to balance by then. For example, Stamina sorcerer went from average/blow average to top dog in one patch recent-ishly

In organized groups or end game, the healer should take care of the whole group exclusively.

While leveling or doing lfg dungeons, that won't always be the case. It's not bad to grab a skill that does healing like momentum or brawler, since it also helps damage. Some healing can be helpful because there are a lot of trash mob damage or area effect damage that can add up if you have a bad tank or healer.
I would not grab skills like vigor for pve if you are a dps though. Pure healing skills should not be needed.

Sort of. Once you get to champion levels (like prestige levels in other games or "overlevels), things eventually slow down. However, you can play another character to 50 and grind more CP levels there, since it's all account wide.

Sorcerer has 3 skilllines that are focused on 1) Storm magic, 2) Daedric summoning (like Skyrim Conjuration mostly), and 3) "Dark" magic.

Dark magic is not super dark or anything, but it plays like a "curse" tree from other rpg games. Daedric summoning is sort of like demonic summoning in a way. Storm magic is nothing like a necromancer though.

NB has 1) Assassination 2) Shadow 3) Siphoning.
Assassination is what it sounds like, so it's probably not very necromancy.
Shadow is decently necromancy, since it uses shadow stuff and plays thematically with "blood magic".
Siphoning is full on "blood magic" from other games including things like life draining and soul stealing.

Based on that description, you should pick the class that feels or might seem more fun to you. They are both viable for magic builds, and the effectiveness differences are not big.


Lastly, know that magic classes in this game can also tank. Magsorcerer and MagNightblade are both great tanks and better than their stamina versions for tanking. Playing a MagNightblade tank feels a lot like Blood DK from WoW actually.

It's a very good open world exploration game. The quests are decent and voice acted.
It also makes leveling through questing/exploring very enjoyable. (At least for most people, and it's miles above other MMOs.

I had random Spindle II today where the tank wanted to kick one dd just because he was lvl11. Didn't even ask if it was an alt or anything just started a kick vote. And it was fucking spindle II and i was the lowest lvl with cp110 beside that guy. We still breezed trough it. After that i got Banished cells II with lvl13 tank and lvl11 and lvl30dd. There are basically two 'main' questlines, there's your faction one that'll send you through the zones in proper order, and the molag bal story one where every 5 levels or so you get called back to the prophet

Just do everything in every zone as you come across it, but if you want to run around doing whatever that's viable now too, although you really should follow the 'main' faction questline because every big segment of it rewards you with an extra skill point

Well this was a clusterfuck. Dropping my ward for even a moment would mean getting one-shot by shit that came straight out of nowhere. Are all vet bosses like this? I can handle aoe indicators and basic mechanics, but this was some straight-up bullshit. The tank eventually ragequit, which was a bit of a relief because he was also a bit of a cunt, and our healer had to leave, but we could clear it with replacement with a little more ease. Still, at that point I almost spent more time refreshing hardened ward than actually keeping up my dps. It was almost sort of worth it just to see trainwiz rage, though.

Is there something I need to have or be able to do before reliably pulling off vet dungeons? I'm cp190 magsorc, full purple gear, I eat food to get my health to 17k and have about 40k magicka, I do the whole elemental blockade+liquid lightning deal, force pulse and crystal frags with light attacks weaved between them, I put up my ward as much as I can even when I'm not being attacked. I do use winged twilight matriarch, mostly because I have it and clannfear out for soloing with the necropotence set, but I swap out clannfear for inner light and use daedric prey along with the ground aoes. My DPS meter shows me anything between 8k-14k depending on how much I have to worry about surviving, which seems like it isn't enough. What exactly do I need to git gud?

You don't really need a ward for that boss fight. Everything is about mechanics and having a decent reaction time in veteran dungeons.

Once you're familiar enough you'll be able to see when it's aiming towards you. What's killing you is the blue ball with the *woosh* sound (followed by venom spit directly after once she's down to 30% health iirc).
Switch your pets with bound aegis and inner light for more damage.

I don't even remember if he did that. Shit was all over the place and he wasn't really doing that good a job about surviving either, losing more than half his health on several occasions. Tanks are supposed to take very little damage and keep blocking, right?

I don't even remember, probably not. Someone else must have, because we all did this animation where we'd shout and grab our heads and shit and then the scroll was gone. Maybe we forgot that last time.

When you activate Hardmode scroll Spindle 1, Banished Cells 1, Wayrest 1 final bosses all have shit that will fuck you up randomly and out of nowhere, whereas Spindle 2 final boss is EZ shit that even CP10s can do, Banished Cells 2 boss is just annoying because of adds and Wayrest 2 'hardmode objective' is not even worth mentioning

For that specific Spindle fight you just dodge when she fires the random attack at you, easy shit once you get the hang of it unless you get targeted like 4 times in a row

You got only 1 key because you didn't do it on hardmode

The aoe originates from the boss and grows into a big circle directly under her. If the tank has her in a corner it shouldn't be a problem. The tank should try to position her so that she's as far from any mage dps and healer as possible while still have room to roll out of the aoe.

Can't comment on the tanks since there's so many factors playing a part in how well you perform.

It's weird, I had the opposite experience, I usually burn out on MMOs long before max level, but in this game I'm up to CP 100 now and not really slowing down and working my way through Cadwell's Silver and Gold, and I actually have an alt character too, I almost never do that either

I don't know what it is exactly but I find this game's combat and general balance and progression a lot more fun than the typical MMO

In your experience, what's a decent minimap addon that also shows lorebooks? I don't care about skyshards as much, but I guess that'd be nice too.

The website lists so many, and they all have good ratings, so I'm a little lost on which one's good.

I just want something simple and nice for lorebook and convenience.
