Well, it's a metaphysical realm. The "anything goes" thing is fair game I think since it takes place in such a free setting, and they do some cool things with that setting with a lot of homage to Socratic/Platonic theory which are nice nods if you're into that sort've thing. I think when it comes to metaphysical wankery Umineko was way more "out-there" than Fata was, for sure.

I think the worst case for me is Maria in the third door. I understand her motivations and I like her, but my main gripe with it is how comically "evil" she behaved behind the scenes. You can still have her do the shit she does, without having her twirl an imaginary mustache as she reveals her evil plans by talking to herself and overall acting like a Saturday morning cartoon villain. And I had a hard time with that door because I had to consider that of all the people in the mansion (as it is apparently filled with servants, and guests sometimes), absolutely no one would cause an interference or misstep for any of the 3 characters, in any way shape or form, for all that period of time. The plan is too delicate to not go to shit. I just don't buy it unless I missed some text where everyone but those 3 were gone from the mansion. And that's after I manage to accept that Jacopo and the WHG behave the way they do, and that Jacopo, being as smart as he appeared to be, was not capable of figuring that something was going with the way the letters were being handled and how he received them.

Just for example, really. I haven't done some thorough analysis or anything, but those things really jumped at me.

Fair enough on Maria. It didn't really particularly bother me how she did her cheesy villain monologue, but I also don't particularly like her, she was easily the worst character in the VN. I won't bother defending her.

I think this was handled generally well. They make a point out of the WHG being mistreated by everyone in the mansion, and that she was intentionally being isolated by Jacopo. Maria was the only one friendly with both the WHG and Jacopo, so it makes sense to me that she would be able to navigate through them, since she was receiving beneficial treatment from both and nothing, save of intentional eavesdropping or something, could have betrayed her. Except servant duties, which actually does delay her a bit at one point. And the few times an unknown factor does come into play, she uses it to her adantage anyway, like she did with Jacopo's friend.

The thing with Jacopo not being able to figure out there was something wrong is because he was blinded by both love and intense insecurity. He never thought he was good enough for the WHG, being neither an actual noble, nor deeming himself worthy of such a good wife. He created a confirmation bias for himself which intentionally blinded him. There's also Morgana's curse to take into account, which really makes the characters exaggerate their worst qualities in all the doors.

I know why Jacopo behaved like that, but I mean that the way the letters were handled made it extremely easy for a fuck up to happen there by either not properly working out who it was addressed to (blotched ink, torn paper in specific places, etc.), for the WHG to write nothing within that was a complete hint at it being directed at Jacopo, and for him to not ever realize that some of the things written are suspiciously similar to what he did with her, for her to not repeat his name in plenty of letters and Maria having to mess with that in a non-suspicious way. I can understand it happening in one or two letters, but not in a ton of them as was hinted. That's were it crosses the line of reason. The more time and letters, the more fuck ups can happen, and yet it conveniently doesn't happen. Ever. I cannot buy that, and is one of those things that make me feel that "anything goes".

Maria is fun in Door 8 though.

Specifically on evil, the forms, reincarnation (and, hence the immortality of the soul), the knowledge of comparisons, and multiple worlds.

The biggest example of this is Michel/Giselle remembering one another in the epilogue. In any other visual this would be an asspull but it's consistent with the metaphysical rules, as knowledge is innate--not learned--because the soul is immortal.
