Hey, Geologist Anon;
Turns out there's only one type of schist currently in the game, HOWEVER, the framework for adding more is very very easy.
You can see in pic related that there's a definition for the gem "Heliodor" to appear in Schist, marble, and granite. If you were so inclined/mad enough to, you could add more types of stone, including Schist, and add/modify gemstones so they appear in the absolutely correct layer types.
Modding DF is easy, it's all text files. Documentation for how stone is formed is found here. The DF wiki is pretty good:

So, from looking further down the sewer via the next grate it looks like it was one of the Giants that had fooled a civ into believing they were a deity, and decided swimming around in the sewers was a good plan.

The dude Snamoz stuck into the wall there is a werebull apparently, but it was very confusing because checking the story telling list for the town has a dwarf with a big long Snamoz the blahblahbhdfh name as well, but that one is a werepanda.

While I was trying to pick out which entries were the human dude I kept coming across this:
>In the early spring of 843 the dwarf Snamoz devoured a huntsman spider of blahblahblah

So at this point the giggles start, then I track down the human Snamoz and find that he was NOT going to be outdone because he went on a binge and ate 6 or 7 beak dogs in one rampage, back to back to back, etc.

>native aluminium in obsidian

I have heard of high concentrations of alumina (aluminium oxide) in certain basalts, but finding aluminium outside of a mineral source inside volcanic deposits no less is highly unlikely.

To be perfectly frank most of my knowledge around volcanic ore-bearing bodies is around porphyry copper deposits, so my knowledge of anything outside of aluminium in mineral formations is thin at best.

The problem with this is that you would have to add many entries for sedimentary and metamorphic rocks in particular to nail perfectly geologically correct naming conventions. Although fifty gorillion definitions on sedimentary rocks based on clastic composition would probably be autism to the extreme, especially since it doesn't add very much to game play unless df has a focus on the aggregates industry. I suppose a little fluff can be added, but I have no idea how df even handles ore deposits. I should probably play the game before diving head first into modding it.

When playing DF, you will find an irrational desire to make everything out of certain stones, having more variety will only make this more satisfying.
>>
>>163595028
>I have no idea how df even handles ore deposits
it's really simple. certain ores and minerals have a chance of appearing in certain rocks. it's as simple as that.
>>
>>163596571
pretty much this. DF simulates the placement of stone layers, not down to individual ore veins or anything.

So basically, I'm writing a documentation for how different RAW tokens affect worldgen sites. The goal is to create a resource for modders who want to put a bit of cultural flavour into the sites of different entities.

Two things I have discovered so far (and mentioned in the general) are the fowwowing:

>making a civ without site level leaders
Will result in hamlets without mead halls. Will make keeps in cities have a multiroom layout, similar to the mead halls. Will stop the keeps from being tracked in the legends.

>stopping a civ from using wood
Will result in houses buing built out of smooth natural rock. Doors to ordinary houses will be built out of "unknown material", and signs will disappear entirely. Furniture, as well as doors in special buildings, will be made out of rock.

If anyone has done experiments on their own, I would appreciate if you told me the results.

I did some more experiments.

As expected, [OUTDOOR_FARMING] controls the farmlands at all sites, while [OUTDOOR_GARDENS] controls the plants grown outside cottages in hamlets.

Removing these tokens from the human civ won't remove the farmlands or gardens entirely, but will replace them with furrowed soil.

[OUTDOOR_ORCHARDS] only appear in elven civs in vanilla. It seems to be behind their tree plantations. If you add them to human civs, some of the farm plots will be used for growing trees instead of plants.

If you remove [OUTDOOR_FARMING] and add [OUTDOOR_ORCHARDS], the tree plantations will completely replace the the farm fields.

Sadly, removing [OUTDOOR_WOOD] from the elves doesn't make them built treehouses out of smooth rock. Instead, it will just make their treehouses disappear altoghether. However, changing [OUTDOOR_WOOD] to [INDOOR_WOOD], will turn the treehouses into cave flora.

To date I have not been able to produce taverns in goblin sites, but you can add the required papermaking/scroll/quire/etc reactions and jobs, along with scholars, and some dark fortress troll pits will be full of books instead.

Giving elves the use_misc_processed_wood_products token I think was what got their taverns to have booze properly.

For what it's worth, though it isn't raw token stuff, if you grab the id from the sites_and_pops export and pull it up with gui/gm-editor df.global.world.world_data.sites[id -1] you can go down to the realization field and there will be a buildings entry at the top as I recall, if you're in a town it will have a bunch of numbered entries, the layouts of keeps with the two large round towers, the placement of doors in the towers, where the doors on the walls are, how high the walls are, and so forth are all in there and technically editable.

By changing [OUTDOOR_ORCHARDS] into [OUTDOOR_FARMING] on the elves, I got them to have furrowed fields instead of tree plantations.

I can't seem to get them to actually plant anything, though. I tried adding planters and threshers, but it still doesn't work. Maybe their sites are hardcoded not to make it work.

Okay, I made them accept killing plants and removed the tree cap diplomacy token, and now the farms work correctly.

I'm not sure which tokens are needed to make them work, but at least now we know that it's possible to have farm fields on a forest retreat.

I couldn't get the gardens to show up, though. Maybe they're exclusive to the human cottages.

I removed [STONE_PREF] from the humans.

It did three things:
It made walls be out of smooth rock, just like wooden buildings when you remove [OUTDOOR_WOOD].

The other stone structure, like keeps, mead halls and temples, however, became made out of generic rock blocks.

For some reason, the roofs of meadhalls became made out of rough natural rock.

However

When i removed [STONE_PREF] from the gobbos, it only affected their watchtowers, not their fortresses.

Maybe it's because the latter are hardcoded.

Don't know if you remember, but I'm the guy who got the huge block of zombies just standing around without their necro master. So I used these past 2 days to make everyone (adult dorfs, who are not in the hospital slowly dying) silver warhammers and gave them enough time to train to get dabbling hammerdorf. Then I attacked the giant herd with my 12 dorfs, and as they outnumbered us 3:1 we of course lost.
Now something strange happened though, the framerate got progressively worse and worse, so much so that I had to tab out to wait for my soldiers to gather to the spot on the video. The fight itself then took about 20 minutes.
The fight was strange, as the zombies didnät seem to react to my guys coming into attack them. Also the fight reports didn't show anything but old shit about them fighting some impala heads, which was odd.
When I had lost most of my guys and the rest were on the floor dying I succumbed the fort.

ps. how do I convert cmv files to webm? Didn't find any online and the df tool to upload movies doesn't allow a file as big as mine.

Malachite is dangerous in water the same way azurite or any other copper-bearing mineral is. Copper can be to my knowledge toxic to some people in large amounts.

You're perfectly safe in handling malachite, and unless your water supply is severely contaminated with copper then you'll probably be fine. I wouldn't crush it and snort it but once again I doubt that much will happen.

I know people have said at various points that it only alters encumbrance, but that's just fucking wrong because you can see when you do things like fall out of a tree and hit the ground, it increases your armor skill more //if// the impact is deflected than if it doesn't.

If your armor user is high enough it flat out deflects the impact, it has to be a high enough speed impact to blow you apart. I know, I jump off mountains a lot, I like to make use of fake-artifact armor and legendary armor user to just let go of cliffs and drop ten, fifteen, twenty z to slam into the ground.

*BAM*

Stand up, dust myself off, move on.

>>
>>163632110
>it increases your armor skill more //if// the impact is deflected than if it doesn't
I don't see how that translates to armor user doing more than reducing encumbrance. Armor user increases more based on the amount of damage deflected (what you're observing) =/= armor user makes armor more effective at deflecting damage (what you're inferring).

Irrespective of that, I agree with anon's assessment about how force translation has affected the usefulness of armor. There doesn't seem to be any correlation between how much damage is stopped by armor and how much force is transferred to joints. It certainly appears that successful attacks transfer all of their force to the nearest joint regardless of whether they get any damage through to the actual location of the attack.
>>
>>163633374
Iron weapons can damage you even if you have a full set of steel armor and grand master armor user skill.

If you make two humans with iron short swords, a full set of steel armor, grand master armor user skill but no weapon skill, and you make them fight, they will still be able to tear muscles and tendons.

Yeah, armor is useful, I did exaggerate in that post, but still, it doesn't make you invincible.

Minotaurs can do damage to a human with a full set of steel armor and grand master armor user skill, of course, minotaurs are big and have good attributes and natural skills, but still.

Also if your opponent is using a weapon of a better material than your armor you might as well just fight him naked, since your armor won't be of any use.
>>
>>163634505
Oh, and creatures can still bite and latch to you, even if the bite was deflected, and it won't stop the damage they do when they shake you.

Malachite isn't a silicate, in fact it's actually quite soft. I would be far more concerned with the breakdown of the hydroxides found in malachite than I would be with your standard cases of silicosis.

At least when your malachite snorting dwarf gets gutted by your local neighborhood elf his lungs will be a sick shade of dirty green.

I have observed that higher armor skill means it successfully deflects impacts more, and at legendary skill it is damn near impossible to get past unless, as I said above, you're hitting something fast enough to literally explode. More on the second part with this next reply.

>>163634505
I have a lot of experience at the high end of that scale, punching downwards against people in ordinary armor with ordinary skill levels.

If what you were saying was true then running around with capped out strength/speed/skill swinging weapons that weigh more than an average dwarf should make people blow apart and send limbs flying left and right, yet armored opponents are significantly more difficult to dismember vs clothed ones which are then more difficult (but only slightly) to dismember than nude ones.

Hell, a minotaur is easier than an average soldier a lot of the time because it is nude, which is an unexpected benefit of giving various intelligent semi-megas the [POWER] tag, they show up in big huge clothes.

The material matters but it is a HUGE difference being naked vs just copper.

It might just be one extra blow, but it's the difference between
>You hack the human axeman in the lower body with your steel battle axe and the severed part sails off in an arc!
and
>You hack the human axeman in the lower body with your steel battle axe, tearing the tendons in the lower spine, and bruising the guts. The XXcopper mail shirtXX is torn apart!

Heck, that's why I went in and gave semimegas/megas better materials, goblins use the same copper~ tier skin/bone properties, I can hack a nude one in half a lot easier if I don't have to get through ANOTHER layer of copper or iron material property having stuff.
>>
>>163637704
I never said anything about dismembering people in armor, you don't need to cut off a bodypart to make it unusable, a torn muscle or tendon is enough, and you can tear muscles with iron weapons even if the opponent has a full set of steel armor.

You know, maybe you should select the arena and check for yourself.

And how the hell are average soldiers in armor harder than minotaurs? I had an adventurer that could kill angel soldiers made out of rock with his bare hands, he cleaned an entire vault by himself, with the exception of the archangel, he couldn't kill that one. But when I tried to fight a minotaur, he got his ass handed to him every time.

Yes, if the opponent has a full set of any armor and low enough skill it is indeed going to wind up that you hack into them, the armor prevents your weapon from getting through, but the force isn't stopped.

High enough armor user skill moves that more and more towards "but it is deflected by the armor" with nothing else happening.

You're acting like I'm just guessing rather than having spent a ridiculous amount of time fucking with the guts of the game and the mechanics involved. If I'm not sure about something I'll say I think, or feel like, or whatnot, but when we're talking about the combat system and shit? Yeah, I know how to go in and make someone do shit like punch a dude across the room with another dude's fist, and how to adjust it so the other dude gets bruised, pulped, or sent flying into a wall hard enough to explode.

I've also sat and checked exactly how much skill gain I get from various things like dodging attacks, being hit and bruised, and being hit while deflecting the attack. You gain more exp from a full deflection with no transfer, then a deflection with some transfer, then a hit with armor damage+bruising/tearing, and then a dodge gives a basic boost.

Same principle when shooting a crossbow at something, you can plink and miss for a minimum skillup, you can shoot a wall for a bit more, you can shoot a living target and miss for a bit more, and you can hit a living target for the best skill gain.

Yet because people say armor user only applies to encumbrance the idea that it might have a reason for giving different exp amounts for different levels of success/failure is absurd? Come on man.

>>163638604
Gem and rock are surprisingly fragile, and I'm pretty sure you're working with vanilla stuff there. A big huge chunk of muscle and bone and high natural skill is going to be a pain in the ass with ordinary punches and kicks, while rock and gem creatures will fracture and chip.

Weapons are another matter.
>>
>>163641190
I know that not every hit is going to do damage, there are attacks that are simply deflected and nothing happens, but even with grand master armor user, the force of a blow can still cause damage to you, it will be less frequent if the opponent has low weapon skill, and it will happen more often if he has high weapon skill.

It can happen even with copper weapons, in a fight between two humans with steel armor, copper short swords, grand master armor user skill and no weapon skill, there will be wounds caused by the force of one their attacks, it's not gonna happen at the first attack, but it will happen. In fights where the humans also have grand master weapon skill, it tends to happen faster.

I already said I exaggerated, I'm sorry, armor isn't actually useless, sorry if I said that, I know I'm wrong, but what I want to say now is that it doesn't make you invincible, I didn't say that having higher armor user skill didn't make it more likely for the armor to deflect hits and the force, if it seemed like I was, I apologize, I wasn't trying to discuss what gave more exp, if it seemed like I was, again, I apologize.
>>
>>163635069
h-hey guy?
>>
>>163642380
Above grand master it kinda does make you basically invincible, I just missed a jump to another tree in a forest retreat and fell like 15 z and slid into a wall, armor deflected it all, got me 18 exp and not a bit of damage.

Also, holy fuck at the battles there, how do 5800 goblins and a few other races LOSE to 150 elves and a couple of dwarves/humans/gobs?

Since there was information being presented that conflicts with a piece of common knowledge about DF and I have no life and nothing better to do on Christmas eve, I decided to do some arena testing on armor user to see how it affects a dwarf's chance to be injured. This turned out to be a little harder than I expected. First, I discovered that all collisions from a 9z drop (the longest possible drop in the vanilla arena) for a dwarf in full bronze armor will be deflected, doing no damage at all no matter what their armor user skill is. The only damage a dwarf will take is from hits to facial features, which are not covered by normal armor pieces. So I tried weaker armors. Copper had the same results. So did nickel. So did aluminum. It seems that any metal armor at all will completely deflect an impact from 9z at any or no armor user skill.
So I decided to start testing with leather. I had a bit more success here. With a kit of a toad man leather robe, helmet, 2 mittens and 2 high boots, I was able to get some injuries. I did two trials with dwarves at no armor user skill and dwarves at grandmaster armor user skill, identically equipped, dropped 9z. I then counted the number of injured body parts and the number of injured joints for each group. In total, across two trials, I dropped 160 dwarves with no skill and 160 dwarves with grandmaster armor user.
My results were as follows:
>>
>>163653438
For non armor users: 84 injured body parts, 16 damaged joints. Hands and feet were the only parts injured, and wrists and ankles were the only joints damaged.

For grandmaster armor users: 112 injured body parts, 22 damaged joints. Damaged parts and joints were the same as above, however one dwarf bruised his head and skull. It was the only injury that was not to a hand, foot, wrist or ankle in the entire trial.

I don't take this to mean that armor user negatively affects a dwarf's survivability. Rather, it seems that these results are well within the rng for a homogenous set of dwarves. I.E., it doesn't show any evidence at all that armor user gave dwarves a greater chance of deflecting damage or preventing force translation to joints. I would opine as well that this is an excellent way of testing it, as it applies roughly equivalent force to every impact, and right on what appears to be a damage-or-no-damage threshhold for armor deflection. This is where you would expect a large gap in armor user to show a clear benefit if it existed. This is surely not definitive, but it's at least strong evidence upholding the common knowledge that higher levels of armor user don't equate to armor stopping more damage.

An interesting incidental observation: every dwarf that was injured gained dabbling dodger, while the ones that were uninjured didn't.

Depends where you start, what do you want to do etc..
I usually go with :
3 x miners
1 x mechanic/architect - unskilled carpenter
1 x grower/brewer - unskilled butcher/leather/tanner
1 x mason - unskilled stone/bone crafter
1 x metal worker - unskilled furnace operator/wood burner

Unskilled means i activate labour after the embarking.

I mostly use this because i 99% of times i embark somewhere without trees and often into high-evil biomes so its impreative to get into the ground at once.

But then again, if you embark into biomes with trees you may want to switch one miner with woodcutter.
>>
Any must have world parameter edits you always do? I usually make only 2 caverns for simplicity, make the cavern openness 75-100 and density 0-25 for more clarity and up the savagery and titan/megabeast number for more fun. Also make it so that I will have at least one volcano in the world
>>
>>163681030
I go with two miners, one grower, one mason, and then the rest I customize depending on the embark. I usually try to keep it to skills that take a really long time to get going or that I can't afford to/don't want to wait for a migrant to arrive with. Things like mining and furnace operating(those first three levels are murder, and then it goes straight to legendary+5 in like a month after that) or military skills, smith skills and mechanics.

I always max out cavern openness and minimize cavern density so they're not ugly and confusing. I try to keep water at the minimum to ensure the caverns can support life without being lakes.
If I want to embark on a volcano(which isn't often), I set volcanism really high so there's tons of volcanos to choose from. If I don't, I set it to absolute minimum because igneous stone layers are boring as fuck and totally ruin an embark.
I set savagery so about half the world is neutral and half the world is savage. Too high savagery limits humans and dwarves too much and makes elves and goblins overpowered, otherwise I would make the entire world savage.
Bogeymen types is always 0.
Night troll types is always really high, because hunting night trolls is my favorite adv mode activity.
Civ numbers are set so I always have two of each race. If one gets skipped or both civs of a race go extinct, the world gets scrapped.
>>
I did another test

In this test I made two humans, both with a full set of steel armor and a copper short sword, but one of them had no armor user skill and the other had grand master armor user skill, in the second set, both of them had the same equipment and also grand master weapon skill, but one of them still didn't have any armor user skill, while the other had grand master armor user skill.

In the first set, the human without armor user skill won 45 times, and the human with grand master armor user skill won 55 times. In the second set, the human without armor user skill won 56 times and the human with grand master armor user skill won 44 times.

Interesting, I thought the human with grand master armor user skill would do better.

I haven't stopped doing attribute tests, it's just that I really wanted to do this one first.

>>163653438
>>163653551
That's really interesting, it's a shame you can't add more z-levels to the arena.
>>
>>163684907
Interesting. From now on when I make adventurers, I'll put points in dodge and block instead of armor. I had a suspicion that the only real defensive impact armor user had was quicker actions and better dodge/block/parry chances, and this definitely seems to support that.
>>
>>163684907
I remember reading somewhere that armor user doesn't improve the use of armor, but instead lessens the effects of the heavy weight of armor, allowing the user to move faster and unencumbred.
>>
>>163685509
Armor user is extremely easy to train anyway, just wrestle something while wearing a full set of armor and it will go up very quickly.

>>163686110
Yeah, in the wiki it says that with high armor user skills, dwarves wearing armor won't get tired quickly, and I thought that would be a really important thing in the tests, but it doesn't seem like it.

What I thought it would happen was, the human without armor user skill would go unconscious from over-exertion before the other human most of the time and get killed by him, but it wasn't like that in the test.

Just be creative. Anything you do that's big and deep will end up pretty cool.

>tips
Plan ahead. If you're going to have crisscrossing paths and elevated walkways you'll save yourself a lot of headache if you have a good idea of how you'll lay them out ahead of time. Marker designations are a wonderful thing, use them liberally. But don't be afraid to freehand your designations in places where you have little chance of fucking up your other plans. If you're going to do plumbing you need to know exactly where it will be before you start digging around it or you will accidentally dig into your pipes.

Smooth as you go. You won't want to build scaffolding to smooth your upper levels after you've dug out your rooms.

Break your square habit. They're easy to designate, but irregular shapes are charming and aesthetic. That said, the only other person who megafortposts with any frequency is comfy/frownanon, and most of his stuff is squares and rectangles, and looks great anyway.

Accept your FPSdeath. Even if you don't dig huge forts that generate a lot of pathing, you're going to be creating a lot of items by digging multi-z rooms, which will gradually drag your fort's FPS down. For every extra z that make a room, you'll be increasing your boulder count. A 2z room will make twice as many boulders, a 5z room will make 5x as many. Depending on how big you dig you may want to consider a stone smashing program.

Visualize your structures in 3d. There are some utilities that can help you with that if you don't have the imagination for it. Tile dimensions are approximated at 2m*2m*3m, if that helps.

Good luck, post results.

Well, I did some better testing.

First bit where it bruises the fat? Dabbling/480 exp or something armor user from a test where I exploded/ghost > healed and the test impact seen there.

Second bit after I slam into the obstacle I used gm-unit to zero out and then set legendary armor user/0 exp, gained 255 exp from the impact, more than the times when I hit and exploded.

Same methodology -broken armor +15 skill levels to legendary15/195.

Took a bruise to the lower abdomen (upper greaves are gone) and gained 210 skill this time.

>>163695239
*Doesn't appear from your limited tests to make it any more likely to stop damage.

Higher speed impacts show the limits of your tests, however, and support my point: with no skill I took more bruises while receiving 195 exp, with legendary skill and LESS total armor I received a single bruise and gained 210 exp.

I can't imagine how you think this demonstrates what you're claiming it does. The differences in your results don't look like anything more than rng. There was a well-controlled test above with 320 data points that didn't find any evidence to support your conclusions. Also, what does the amount of exp gain have to do with it?
>>
>>163696648
Hammer Jesus is the best.
>>
What I wanted to do in my tests is to show if armor user helped in fights against fighters with full armor, weapons made of worse materials that the armor, of the same size, stats and skills (aside from armor user of course), and from what I've seen in the results, it doesn't seem to help much.

Falling and similar stuff is another thing that I didn't want to test though.
>>
>>163696648
>>163696648
>Hammerjesus

This screams for a new meme ...
>>
>>163696982
The test above was limited by the arena size, 9 z doesn't mean dick, it isn't enough of an impact for what I was talking about.

The differences in my results to note are: glances away, and bruising.

The exp gain was from better deflection rolls, shooting a bolt at something and missing gives less than hitting, I'm saying armor user works in a similar way.

Being hit and deflecting it with armor, or having it glance away, is a superior roll to having it hit and not glance away, which is superior to having it hit and bruise, which is superior to having it damage without the armor stopping it.

>>163697221
I'm dealing with values that are quite a bit beyond what just arena defaults allow, only a minecart will let you test it properly in vanilla, the drop tests aren't far enough, and the fighters aren't skilled OR strong enough generally.

You need the difference between an impact that would pulp tissue, bruise through armor, or be deflected by armor to see it, and that's only going to be occasional outcomes with AI combatants.
>>
>>163697512
You should read http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Weapon#Combat_formulae.
The formulae governing whether damage does or doesn't get through armor are known and well documented, and armor user skill isn't a factor.
>>
>>163697512
As I said falling damage, or damage from colliding with a wall at high speed is something else that I didn't want to test, I just wanted to test how the skill is in a fight against similar fighters.

If you think they aren't skilled or strong enough I guess I could give them both 5000 strength and legendary natural skills, or instead of a human without armor user skill I could make the other human fight something really strong, like a giant.

From what I've seen a steel helm and grand master armor user skill doesn't stop a giant from crushing your spine from a hit to the head.

>>
>>163698439
I know the combat formula well.

>>163698641
It's a pain to set up repeatable tests for falling/collisions, if you could set up a custom arena with impulse ramps and make creatures who start out riding minecarts you could launch them en masse along a route and observe the outcome.

I've got a pretty good backlog of tests on how to survive things like, wiping out while riding a minecart, you can probably guess where it has come from.

I've also got a lot of experience doing things like testing my launch script, and screwing around with my onepunch critical hit script.

There are simply cases where there is no reason why a minecart should bounce off with no damage consistently while other times it fucks up bones and shit except the armor user skill differences.

My attacks with the onepunch attack are much more a minecart impact velocity than an ordinary attack, and this is where it starts to become clear that simply writing off armor and armor user as "only doing x" is missing a lot.

I can't find another reason why this would happen, but I can see why it wouldn't have been factored into the combat calculation tests: they weren't using high end values, I am.

I did the fall multiple times and got no change since the arena is so small, then I built a platform up by the sky and rode a minecart off into the deepest part of the arena multiple times until I got a feel for how fast would let me hit the wall without exploding, about five pushes should jump you from just over the river going north into the wall at the upper end.

Then you should know that the combat formulae are deterministic. If there were values missing they would be yielding incorrect results. Also, they have been thoroughly tested using extreme ranges of values.

Memes aside,

Why do elves consistently have the most blood soaked wars in world gen. They will fight Goblins, Dwarves and Humans for decades upon decades upon decades. No other race ever manages to wrack up the kill count in their wars that the Elves do. It's essentially a case that the Elves do what one would expect Goblins to do. Fight.

Is this because, were Goblins to regularly war, they would wipe out the other species purely due to their huge populations? Or is this because of the ideology tags of the Elves, making them hate the other races fervently?

If it's the latter, has anyone found a way to make Goblins as jingoistic as Elves and Elves less likely to go to war.
>>
>>163712265
Elvish ideology and culture makes them differ a lot from the other races (no treecutting, no metalworking, etc) and they end up in war with everyone, and end up surprisingly most of the time winning because of their ability to tame war beasts (Namely elephantes and rhinos) and the fact that they never die of old age.

Hmmm.

I did a bunch of tests just now and my head hurts.

Riding a cart from next to the ramps over the river into the northern wall with 8 pushes gives a range of injuries, 9 pushes explodes you, so that's a nice spot to work with.

I'll sort through and get it written in a less shorthandy manner at some point, but the biggest result was that just armor is not smart, the range of injuries with any of the skill levels and only hard armor was huge, the range of injuries with just heavy leather/scale type clothing was much smaller, and armor+clothing reduces it to "pick two limbs which get bruised, or a main body+mangled organ" with occasional broken necks or mangled hip/knee type results.

Once in a while you'll get "glances away" even with no skill but not as often as I did with legendary15 or legendary45 armor skill.

Weirdly when I removed all other skills entirely from my tester (who have various natural combat skills) the rate of glances away rolls went down dramatically, so I'm now suspecting dodge is playing a role there because every test impact from 0 skill of any sort gave 15 to 60 dodge depending on the outcome.

Hop on a cart and ride it, then push it 8 times and bash into the wall, you'll be going the same speed every time, and generally get the same sort of injuries outside of freaks like the time it hit my nose and spun my head off.
>>
>>163718849
I see, I thought you were using minecarts just to hit the wall harder. I've never done anything with minecarts, so I know pretty much nothing about how they work.

Getting hit by a minecart made of featherwood would do less damage than getting hit by one made out of slade right?

I think it was actually something else going on now, I've never tested high armor user without high dodging, but doing the same tests with legendary dodging got "but the attack glances away!" far more often than it did at any point during the armor user+no other skill tests, so I'm guessing now that "glances away" means you dodged or some shit technically?

No. Native gold is basically gold (same base value). Unrestrict it from economic and have your masons and stoneworkers go to town.

You CAN, you don't have to. Why waste fuel? (Unless you have magma metal industry)
Press z to go to stocks, then go to stone.
tap down to gold nuggets and then hit enter to unrestrict it. Put a gold nugget stockpile next to your mason's shop. Proceed to have gold items with no smelting or fuel required.

Hmmm, I think some of the entity changes had a weird effect.

I keep finding rather large groups moving through towns or hamlets that aren't bandits but are aggressive to me and I learned a little late the first time that people don't like them being killed.

Had a big squad of human and dwarf bowmen/recruits plus an elite wrestler and an axedwarf chasing after me and as I'm running around trying to get them to back off without killing them I noticed one was trying to hit me with a book.

Is this what happens when performers and scholars get turned away and start deciding to take matters into their own hands?

Remove [EVIL] from them, then they can be trained and tamed like any other wild animal. Alternately, you can give your civ the appropriate tag, I think it's [USE_EVIL_ANIMALS], or something similar, to allow your civ to tame them. For the former you can do it on a world you've already begun playing, for the latter you'll need to gen a new world.

Well, even though I spend at least 70% of my DF time in adv mode, I strongly disagree with you.

Still, bear in mind that the upcoming artifact release will mostly spoil the adv mode players. There will be some added functionality to fort mode (ability to send squads off the embark to retrieve artifacts, ability to mount items of your choosing in displays, siegers who try to threaten you into handing over an artifact to avoid bloodshed, peddlers, etc), but most of it seems to go into adv mode, with the new artifact quests and rivalries between different adventurer bands.

Also, bear in mind that there are tons of people who scream for the direct opposite of what you're suggesting, namely that Toady only works on fort mode. I think what he currently does is a nice compromise.

Spacefox has a very distinct visual style, that might not be for everyone.

CP437 lets you picture the game as having any style you want. Some people imagine the game having a realistic style, some imagine it having samurai jack kinda style, some imagine ithaving anime style visuals, et cetera.
>>
>>163769041
I completely disagree with the notion that tileset is easier to get into. With or without a tileset, a new player is still going to have to "l"ook at a creature to tell what it is. ASCII is also much cleaner than the majority of tilesets out there, and an aftermath of a battle in ASCII is sorta readable while in tilesets its usually a mess of green and red patches. Tilesets are good though for finding dudes on the map as the gray background on sprites helps pop out from the grass or mountain.

Out of 100 rounds the human won 37 times and the human400str won 63. In the second set the human won 26 times and the human400str won 74.

Out of 100 round the human won 47 times and the human400agi won 53 times. In the second set the human won 41 times and the human400agi won 59.

Out of 100 round the human won 41 times and the human400end won 59. In the second set the human won 44 times and the human400end won 56.

Really impressive results on the first test, strength seems to be extremely useful, especially in fights against armored opponents, I've seen the human400str break bones and even destroy bodyparts through armor.

Leveling armor without dodge going up is pretty much impossible, and pointless anyways, so I never even did it with dfhack, but I did it with my cart > 8 pushes > wallbash setup and jacking up the dodge skill resulted in significantly higher rates of the "glances away" result.

If you say so, it seems to me that your tests are different and there's not really a... "connection" (not sure if this is the right word) between the results, but since you seem to know more about what skills affect armor and all that, I'll take your word for it.

The value of strength > endurance > agility at the +400 attribute range, and I was mistaken on the armor a bit, since dodge skill looks to be what is actually involved when you get an "attack glances away" result, which is confusing since it's listed like the rest of the armor absorption/deflection results.

>The city of Assura itself was a fortress built atop an ancient dwarf fortress, from which it dominated the Slusian Plains. Its walls were made of mud brick from the twin rivers that wove through the empire. At the center was a palace, constructed on a great mound of earth thought to be the ruins of a dwarven temple complex. It was here that the crazed King Banatar made his home.

>"Apart," said Maktow, "but not lost. Look here."

>Guiding the king to the statue of Nadir, Maktow began to chant in the ancient dwarven tongue. He drew a circle with his hand at the foot of the statue. He would grant the king a glimpse into Nullset using the forbidden magic of Mourkob. With his finger, the dwarf traced a line down the center of the circle and folded back the layers of reality to reveal an extraterrestrial scene.

That is kinda the life motto from guts up to getting to know the falcon band
After that, he literally goes on a quest to find a new objective in life, but his quest gets fucked up by demons/his best friend, and the story becomes an over the top manga of the mc forcing himself to endure as much as he can to rescue his loved one
This way of life is starting slowly to give him supernatural powers, and he must trascend humanity with this powers and lose his humanity to finish his quest

Look, In Berserk, the MC ''needs'' to become more and more powerful to do what he needs to, but nor he wants to, nor he seems to gonna be able to (he gotta kill a basically unkillable being)
This paradox, and the way it shapes the story, is kinda different from your average shonen for kids

>Berserk is 2deep4me because the MC wants to become impossibly strong.
Look at this stick man.

His name is Steve. He is infinitely strong. he's so strong, he could wipe out all of humanity only using his dick. He could win an arm wrestling match against God using only one of the hairs on his pinky finger.

However, not all is good with him. See, he has a really dark past. Also, sometimes he wonders to himself: am I really human anymore? What does it mean to be human?

The dialectic between his hyperbolic strength and his conflicting personality makes him a really deep and well written character.

Where's my fucking Nobel litterature prize, anon?

His aparent incoherence and dislike for everything in the world seems to stem from a profound wound in his mind we only get to see at the end of the book

Overall, Mackflanigan's life is an expression of the way of coping and how suffering affects the human mind

In the end he rapes his sister Phoebe

Nigga, you went full retard.

>>163847363
In a shonen, you are generally "the chosen one", fate conspires to make things better and give them boons, in a shonen anything in your background is likely to be a sort of hook for power or a challenge to overcome to gain more power.

In Berserk, that shit happens for Griffith, and one of the side characters ends up trying to go up against him after he literally sacrifices almost the entirety of the rest of the established cast up to that point to become a god.

Playing a side character thrust into a role of trying to resist a supremely powerful protagonist in a world which has been transformed by their actions into something new and at times amazing, while at other times a horrific conglomeration of awful shit... that's kinda literally what various parts of the Threetoe stories are about.

Being able to encounter a situation right out of Berserk and realize you're playing Guts or worse someone like Pippin or Judeau is literally a thing that is supposed to happen in df eventually.

Cut off any limb you want and then quick travel away. Upon returning they will have stopped bleeding and you can do this as many times as you want without worry of killing your quarry.

And nothing really ever happens, what am I missing? I'm getting bored

>open ended
make what you can out of it, not the game's fault you're boring
>>
>>163902404
I'm not saying the games bad or anything, I know that there's a shit ton of stuff that's possible, but I don't know how to actually progress

Quick I need that cutebold image where the dwarf is like "they're so kawaii" but the kobolds are actually gross boar-headed monsters that are all like "REEEE TREASURE"

Right now I have a crummy laptop that struggles with dwarf fortress. I'm considering building a dwarf fortress pc. Does anyone know if the game taxes the video card? I wonder if I could skimp on that because it doesn't seem like graphics are what slow the game down.

Fast ram and a fast CPU would be good, but the former seems more important.

Here is a relevant baytwelve thread.

I know Toady said that he thought Zach was dead when he took meth, but I never heard the rumour about the third brother.

Is there any tileset that gives the game an old school rpg kinda feeling?
>>
>>163698923
Shit, that's a good idea. I'll have some guy make toys during winter and nickname him santa
>>
>>163922021
Why not just found a Santa's workshop in a good glacier? Give tons of free toys to all caravans.
>>
>>163922072
You need to enslave some elves first.
>>
>>163921265
'old school rpg' is a very mushy term, you're gonna have to be more specific than that.

There's this NES-like tileset from some anon around here, and IIRC there were one or two on the tileset subforum over at bay12. Check those out.
>>
>>163922352
nes sounds cool.

chausses are usually over knee leg armor usually made of chainmail. So no, it wouldn't count as thighhigh stockings.

only blacksmiths and armorers are good for the weapon industry.
