This is false.
I had just started posting on /agdg/ when the engines and resources were added to the OP, and that was about 1.5 years ago. In fact the engines were being forced into the OP for like a month or so, the OP would make the threads early to make sure they were kept in the OP. People argued about it just like they do now, some saying it's bloated and wanting the old slim OP.
That OP was bloated though, and was eventually trimmed down to what we've been using for the past year.

26 and just started learning Python (partly for work, mostly for gaem).

I'm going to eventually transition to Godot (even if Godot uses a proprietary language I figure having a solid grounding in an actual language isn't a bad thing) and then see where that takes me.

Feels better than the 5+ years I spent as a nodev shitposter, I can tell you that much.

I can't believe I was ever intimidated by Unity. I think I'm really starting to get the hang of it. Already managed to convert most of TUSSLE's physics engine to it. Next comes animations, then seeing if I can reconcile the XML custom character scripts from Python to Unity.

I'm nearing the end of my intro courses for C++ (68% complete or something) and I'm extremely comfortable with UE4 (probably over 100 hours of tutorials on the editor).

Actual prototyping begins soon on a game I've been thinking about for 18 months.... So ready to tell people I've actually started.

The biggest myth in the world is that programming is boring and hard. While it can be both, like any skill if you understand the basics (which is really all you need to get started) it's tons of fun thinking of stuff you want your computer to do and realize "Oh hey, I can do that!".

It's like having a big ol box of Legos.

Targeting now works correctly with the new radar, and with the HUD. Target boxes appear and disappear when based on whatever is in the visible targets list, and targeting now works correctly works within that visible targets list so you can only target/lock things that you can see.

Spent years in the oil/refinery industry making bank and putting it away for this. Bought house, bought car, paid off both. Quit to pursue this fantasy of mine (though a job is waiting for me back there if I ever decide this will not work out). Only expenses are utilities, internet, food and dog food. And finally, locking is working again. What a ride. It doesn't look any different than it did when I started, but this is now an expandable system that can be used for AI and anything. actually, I want to get people's opinion on this.

I want to refine my scope from massive down to large. this isn't the full voice-acted MMORPG or anything.

Let me explain my scope, briefly, and please tell me how long you think it will take or if you think I'm just screwed.

I'm making an online multiplayer combat game (can't go into details) with a very intricate player controller, movement and attack options. I want AAA or AA quality models and animations (hard body, no organic matter), AA quality sound effects and music, A quality VFX. (I know it doesn't just go to double A I'm just saying).

Here's my status: I work full time with generous vacation. My partner is a very driven modeler who's responsible for textures and animations. Do you think we can do it?

There's really not much data to a character with all of the abstraction I've put in. There's a bunch of pre-defined base actions that have all of the functionality, and it's basically just passing it an animation, some hitbox data, and a few manual overrides. Zero is made entirely in XML, and he's got some pretty unique mechanics, like his element swapping and charge shots.

If you don't like it, TUSSLE also supports fully realized character code. XML is pretty much just for the visual character builder, it's not expected to be done by hand.

Spent a bunch of time yesterday trying to devise a way to do this orbit MMO style camera that when you mousewheel in goes to an over the shoulder view, and got it to this.

I was about to add smoothing when I realized a simpler way to do it would be to have an array of stored camera positions relative to the character, and player mousewheel input could cycle along that index. Then I could smooth between those position, and have a switch statement for each type of camera control.

But thats a TODO while this is functional enough, now I have to figure out how I want to implement shooting and melee combats.

Dear squaredev

I edited the eye on the right (her left eye) in Gimp and just softened up that PureBlackâ„¢ outline around the eye and extended the blue a little outwards.

The black looks nice for the eyelash but just seems a little harsh to me for the outline.

Anyway, just my opinion.
>>
>>163412135
simple things will be harder because of c# verboseness. harder things will be POSSIBLE because you are using a real programming language

one reason why so many of the hit indies games came out of gamemaker is that it restricts you to small scope and easily coded gameplay
>>
>>163412153
>Which part are you finding complicated?
So far I find the coding overly complicated.
It's like you have to set up everything first and create components for speed values, health values, etc, which takes hundret lines of code, while in GM you can do this in 2 lines of code.
>>
>>163412321
were you using the built-in gamemaker variables for that?
>>
>>163412280
You can do anything you want with Gamemaker. It just has to be a 2d game (not sure about 3d in GM).

why do pawns have to be such special snowflakes? they're the only piece with 3 snowflake rules. they can only take other pieces using a move that's different from their standard move, the can move twice their usual distance if it's their first move and, they can become a different piece if they make it to the end of the board. chess would be such a breeze to make if it wasn't for pawns.

Shitty Nintendo Dev here with a rather shitty update.
Whilst working on a playable demo I have come across what appear to be numerous bloodclots in my arms, I've got a doctors appointment to evaluate the seriousness of the situation
At worse this could be the later stages of dvt, which would mean I'm already mostly fucked as there would then be clots riddled throughout my body.
If this is the case I'm legit not gonna make it.
So if you don't hear from me for a while (I atleast try to make it to every monday recap) then it's fair to presume me dead or no longer working on the game.

I did the tutorials, read the manual, looked at all the examples. But you just need to get some experience with it. What was a problem for me initially is that there are a lot of different ways to do things. You can make a game in pure code or, for some games, almost entirely in the editor, so it's really up to you how you use it. You could use the instancing a lot or barely at all. And you need some experience with different approaches to be able to judge which way would be best suited for you particular endeavors. At least that's my impression so far

im considering creating a dynamic blur for fast moving bullets like these so a 60fps screen doesnt distort it into looking like multiple bullets like this

maybe by always drawing the bullet twice, one as a solid color stretching between the previous and the current position, and the other as a gradiant to clear that matches where the solid sprite was during the last frame

Hey guys, do you have any good suggestions for handling stats in an RPG? Basically just a decent way to hold them across gameplay neatly. I feel like the Stat Manager I've started writing may be needlessly tedious and was just wondering if there's anyone that has any good ideas for properly handling them.

Having a visual editor really helps when you start to have a good amount of animations around.

Thanks.

I had to do that because I ran into the issues of managing different animations for each new weapon I was adding.
Right now I have the sword, axe, spear, and the funky throwable ones I've posted in my old webm.

I think I can actually start to add some more enemies and play around.
All that will be left after is just tweaking what exists, like the map generation, adding new blocks and stuff. Mostly the "fun-only" parts.

So how do you generate a maze that's actually solvable?

Myself, I have each stat doing exactly one thing with no derived stats. I'll go ahead and list em since it may be somewhat hard to tell what they are.

Vitality: Increases max HP.
Wisdom: Increases max MP.
Stamina: Increases max SP.
Constitution: Increases HP regen.
Fortitude: Increases MP regen.
Mettle: Increases SP regen.
Strength: Increases damage when used by weapons that use strength.
Defense: Reduces damage from physical elements.
Intelligence: Increases damage when used by weapons that use intelligence, also increases the damage of all non-physical magic.
Resilience: Reduces damage from magical elements.
Speed: How fast you can move.
Accuracy: Increases your chance of hitting the opponent instead of nicking him.
Evade: Increases your chance of getting a nick when you're hit, which lowers your damage received.
Luck: Increases critical chance and critical defense.

Most of these things your stats wind out being derived into, but having them in standalone states is more interesting to me, as you can have something like a character with super low MP, but his INT is through the roof.

Now, I can't reply to anything as I'm getting ready to go to work, but I hope that helped in the slightest. Good luck, fellow RPGbro.

There's different ways to manage them, depending on the sort of game you're making and how they're going to be used.

A stat manager would be the easiest way I guess, though I reckon you can also just use maps,dictionaries or data tables.

So you can have say
{
"str" : 10,
"mresist" : 15,
"fresist" : 30.
}

And then have a function called GetFireResist(), which will search through the structure for the "fresist" key and return its value every time a character gets hit with fire damage.
You can also have a function called GetIceResist() which will return 0 since it can't find "iresist" in the dictionary.

An advantage of this method would be flexibility, you can easily add new stats or remove old ones without affecting anything in the system since every stat is independent and just a key for a value. (As opposed to being hard-coded variables)

Also cute ahoge.

>What is it with people thinking a subjective medium's quality is determined by the amount of time they've practiced

Spot the post modern "artist" appreciator.

Drawings can be graded and criticized objectively. Inconsistent shading, lack of foreshortening, wonky proportions,chicken scratching, there's plenty of mistakes beginners do and it's in their best interest to improve instead of deadlocking themselves with "IT'S MUH STYLE, QUALITY IS JUST SUBJECTIVE".

Can these people, after years of experience, "break" the rules and settle on a specific style with unorthodox proportions or the such? Yes of course, but the difference is that this happens intentionally, that it can be re-produced by the artist as many times as he wants and wasn't just a "happy accident", and that it's consistent with the rest of his work. Which is clearly not the case for someone just starting out and complaining that he's not good enough.

trying planes with a multi camera approach now (using one cam just to draw the horizon and another one to move the planes below), I think that's gonna work just fine

I opened VS to look at my code because I was curious about something, one thing led to another, and I ended up doing some light re-organization of the way the Targetable interface is used. There's now an optional abstract class implementation of it to take care of some boilerplate code I had created for myself.

There's currently an unused faction element to the targetable stuff, so I decided to add in the HUD stuff necessary to display friendly targets. I'm working on getting the radar to tell friend from foe now and get it working with the changes the way I'm using Targetable again.

While I do agree that it makes AI a lot more easier when you get it, I still believe that it's really fucked up shit.
Even the descriptive classes names didn't help that much at first because of how you have to understand how the whole stuff works again

>you have to remember that the system runs on 4 major states
>you have to remember that the core runs through "sequences" or derived things from that, and uses "commands"
>you have to remember that an end "command" at the end of a branch is a "leaf", which is the base of the system
>you have to remember that all branches can potentially be checked if you don't have a solid condition hierarchy above
>which means that you need a bunch of commands holding commands acting as conditions to make the whole thing work

Something in between. Going full DCS is interesting, but way too complicated and only like 3 people would be interested. Honestly I think I might already be pushing the complexity a bit, and I question if it's really worth the effort of doing some of the physics things I am considering they still fly like slippery planes.

I want it to be a more in depth than Ace Combat in terms of how combat and weapons work. For example, there's actual physics behind the weapons and ships, and I have thoughts about how death and losses will be handled, but I don't want to make it complicated enough that you need to study the game or anything.

Radar is now working with the HUD ally target boxes. You can target allies, but you can't lock them. Allies also have a different detection range so that you can see them from much further out than regular targets. Or not, it's configurable.

Also fixed a bug where weapons didn't have to wait for a lock to guide in. Realized that was the case when I tried to shoot at a targeted friendly and it worked without a lock.

Not to diminish your enthusiasm but I don't understand what makes people ask questions like this. You learn by doing, everyone does, so yes, if you want to make games, now would be the time. Find a tutorial to learn along with and go.

If you immediately start making your game before doing enough tutorials you'll find yourself constantly learning new things which cause you to regret earlier decisions or wanting to redo things.

You can avoid this safely by just dedicating 1 or 2 days to training. Thankfully learning game dev and doing tutorials (especially official documentation) is the most fun learning.

> -- Step 1 - Choose an engine/framework --
>"What language/engine/framework should I use/learn?"
What you're comfortable with. Just start using something. If you like it, stick with it. If you don't, try something else. Till you find something that you like. If it gets too easy change it for something else.

>"Okay but what do you recommend?"
If you want to make 3D games: Unity - https://unity3d.com/

HaxeFlixel - http://haxeflixel.com/

LibGDX - https://libgdx.badlogicgames.com/

Scratch - Please don't use this unless you're literally 3

> -- Step 2 - Learning --

Great, you picked a tool. Now to learn how to use it. Simply Google "[toolname] tutorial". There are tons of tutorials for every framework out there. Do not look up "How to make x in y". For example "How to make an rpg in Unity". You shouldn't learn how to make an rpg, you should learn how to use Unity. And then when you're good enough with Unity, you can start making an rpg, or a platformer, or anything, because you learned how to use Unity for everything and not for a specific thing.

Whenever you learn something, try to actually learn from it, don't just copy it.

> --Step 3 - Making games --

Know your limits. You won't be making an MMO. You will make small crappy games that get a bit better each time you make one. I recommend you try to make the following games, in this order, as practice:
Pong, Breakout, Space Invaders, Snake, Tetris, Doodlejump
Something like that, you can skip games or change the order, it's just a recommendation.

GIMP, you can paste all frames as layers, then export to a gif, just check the animation box in export
(you also should optimize it in the filters)

or maybe virtualdub

There might be easier ways nowadays though, try google

trajectory paths always involve some fun math equations if you want them to be accurate
you can use an end point to determine the necessary starting angle + velocity
here's a snippet to get you inspired, this is a trajectory line

public Vector3 PlotTrajectoryAtTime(Vector3 startPosition, Vector3 startVelocity, float time){
return startPosition + (startVelocity * time) + (Physics.gravity * time * time * 0.5f);

I'm seconding your question.

As I know, Maiden dev use 500-something, while at Summer we had Jelly fish dev, who, as I remember, used a size bigger than 1000, and let Unity scale it down on it's own. I also had to realize that if you use sprites in a 3D engine, your pixels suddenly turn into some sort of vector graphics, and scaling isn't such a big issue anymore.

you want
for ( var i = 0; i <= 10; i++ )
{}

if i is only used for the loop, make sure you set the scope to local with var, the next statement must be true (with a way to not be true or else the game will crash), and the third statement increments the value.

since you have i = 10, the loop isn't running right since you're initializing i to 0, which does not equal 10

Yes need to be an ass.
Your problem could have been solved by doing something you absolutely need to do when deving. You shouldn't be stuck for any amount of time just because nobody can be bothered to spoonfeed you on that day on the most basic shit gamedev has to offer.

I still don't get the basic idea of how you're supposed to organize the responsibilities in game code? Who manages what? I mean in theory you could have a master thing that tells everybody what to do.
The problem is that almost everything in a game tends to interact so it becomes impossible to separate things.

dude i'm making a fucking game with gamemaker, you think i need to read every doc on the internet so i can set up a basic loop?

>you think i need to read every doc on the internet so i can set up a basic loop?
I think you need to read ONE doc in the internet. And you need to be willing to read docs if you have trouble, because there is no guarantee the internet will solve your question. Shit like yours will end up alone in a forum thread, because usually people can not be bothered to answer a question that takes less than a minute to read up on.

I wouldn't be this buttblasted if your question was about some algorithm for terrain generation or AI structures, but a fucking for-loop is so basic that you should be shot in the knee for not googling "GML Introduction" in the first place.

Hmmm, I see, this is a pretty good idea, thank you so much for it! Everything I had so far were just hard coded variables and I've really been starting to feel like it wasn't quite the best solution. I mean, it works I suppose, but for some reason it just feels slow and my script for it is huge and cluttered. I'll have to give this a shot and see how it works out, not only does it sound less tedious, but it also seems like it could be way neater! Thank you!

And thanks, my artist is working well with character designs, so I hope people like them!

>>163430568
Thank you for much for the tips! It's not exactly what I was looking for, but you've given ideas for some stats or sub-abilities for certain stats to do that I definitely looked over previously. I appreciate it!

Weakest weapon, currently dropped by every skeleton, has 1 heart (durability), which is used up on hitting a wall.

Not sure sarcastic.

In the webm, when you open the inventory (tombstones center at the bottom), hearts of each one appear on the top right corner. Once you equip a weapon (it goes under your hearts on top left), its hearts are shown next to it.

What are you trying to learn to do with blender?

I find Darrin Lile on youtube to be a pretty good resource for all the fundamentals of blender for game asset creation, with the lack of texture painting info covered by just watching any digital painters really but I like XRG81 explanations most so far.

Very nice design but consider where the light source is coming from. At the moment areas that would be in shadow are being lit from the centre outwards like they are bulbous shapes rather than a coherent object interacting with a light source.

You could fix if you chuck it in photoshop and use the colour replacement tool so you can keep the same palette and won't have to repaint individual areas by hand.
