Finally completed Gekinoire last night. Only took me about 70 hours to clear and I played it from start to finish on hard mode. Overall I really like it.

There are some bad things though. For one, the AI is very bare bones. Very few times will it ever pursue or attempt to control space so you're able to outmanuever it without too much effort. Another thing is, the elemental system, while partly engaging, doesn't make much sense. Ice beats fire, fire beats wind, wind beats lightning, and lightning beats ice. I guess I could see the relationship between fire and ice, but fire beating wind and wind beating lightning isn't logical. Are they expecting you to imagine a bolt of thunder being pushed away by a gust or a blazing fire consuming all of the oxygen that makes wind or...?

One thing that I thought was a bit quirky about the localization was this scene in particular. After you recruit Estelle she invites Noire to an Inn so that they can do something legendary together. The scene's a direct reference to Dragon Quest and its "puff-puff" meme. However, I don't understand why it was translated as "boing-boing". At first I thought maybe they were just trying to avoid being sued by making the reference ambiguous, except that in the Japanese dialog they call it a "puff-puff" exactly. More curious still, in the English localizations of Dragon Quest games it's also called a "puff-puff". I thought that maybe the translator might've just been unfamiliar with the reference, except that they would have to know what a "paffu-paffu" was in order to make the connection that Estelle was burying her face into Noire's cleavage. 'Everyone's Gay for Noire' would have made for a fine title for this game(and is part of its charm.)

Phantom Brave's AI is like an alpha of Makai Kingdom's AI. I always found it more entertaining than challenging. I've found memories of mobs randomly collecting stones and tree trunks and lobbying them off the side of the map randomly. It got better in Makai Kingdom, but only marginally. I can't remember if they made another game in the Phantom series after that. I've always loved Zetta as a character, but even the developers admitted the game was rushed.

That's right. I remember you mentioning before that even Tiara's clothes would just display as bright magenta.

I think it's because you may not have Japanese fonts installed. Some mod files expect the original Japanese file names so if you rename the mod files or aren't using a Japanese locale they fail to load. Or the files could be corrupt. Really would depend on how your system's set up. Some people try to use locale emulators to run Japanese software but emulators don't always pass filenames properly.

In short, try switching to a Japanese locale. You can still have your operating system in English. It just makes Japanese characters work with unicode.

I'd like to play Gekinoire on PC with Japanese dialog, but there's no such thing. It doesn't really make sense to pay 3000 yen for Gekinoire on JP PSN when the PC version gets discounted for $7.50 so often.

Phantom Brave and Phantom Kingdom(renamed Makai Kingdom in the US) are part of the same series and use the same engine. I'm sure it's been improved in later versions, but on the PS2 version of Phantom Brave the AI acts as though possessed. Like an angry parakeet it'll run about the map sometimes remembering to attack you, sometimes going after its allies and even inanimate objects. I'd imagine they fixed it in the PSP release and then again in the Wii release, and finally one more time for the PC release.

There's a few exceptions to GekiNoire's AI but not nearly enough. One map has you having to defend an objective and in it waves of enemies constantly advance. Then in the final battle with DoS Arfoire you get to face off against a far more aggressive and often merciless AI.

But otherwise it'll just stand still, which is really a shame. It's too easy to use a tank like Ein Al or Estelle to bait enemies so that your dps can make short work of them. It's a bit odd to see the holy trinity making an appearance in an SRPG of all genres.

If you set the game to full screen but set its resolution lower than your monitor's native resolution then you'll get black borders on your screen like in that screenshot.

The reason why is because its only rendering the resolution you've asked it to. It would output black pixels for anything out of its rendering range.

Basically yes, but I wouldn't call it a rip-off as more a homage. Godzilla vs. Biollante is a very beloved movie in Japan, and regarded as one of the best Heisei-era Godzilla films, and Biollante herself is one of the most popular Godzilla monsters outside of series mainstays like Mothra and King Ghidora. It's more like how most of the robot characters in Neptunia are references to mecha and giant robot anime, like CFW Brave being a ball of Gundam and Brave references. Time Eater as a villain is completely different from Biollante aside from it's appearance.
