Question for you guys.

How do you manage your magma forges and whatnot? I usually build my fort relatively close to surface level for convenience purposes, re: trading, wood gathering, fishing, etc.

Do you just move the core of your fort down closer to the magma and abandon the surface altogether, or do some sort of split fort system with industry way down below near the magma and other shit closer to the surface? I've never really gotten a solution to this that I was comfortable with, and would like some input. I'd prefer not to do an 80 Z-Level tall pump stack because of FPS death.
>>

I sometimes make sub-areas like, have a few farmers and brewers and cooks, etc. with bedrooms and a dining area and food stockpiles and such down lower in the earth near the forges to sustain the operation without needing lengthy trips up and down.

Appraisal ain't got shit to do with bookkeeping. Anyone can keep book.

Appraisal is used by brokers to determine the value of goods, and for the most part, just sending a broker to the depot when a caravan is there is enough to have them learn the skill.
>>
>>163163078

Thanks that worked. But sadly a weremonkey turned up and ive neglected the army
>>
>>163163634
All my dwarves have >no relevant skill< next to them when I want to apoint a bookkeeper. Or broker maybe? I'll check on it when I get home.
>>
>>163164651
means you got no dorfs with record keeping abilities. don't worry, they'll figure it out.

brokers have appraisal, judge of intent and social skills. joi is the one you want the most.
>>
>>163164651
Bookkeeper uses the bookkeeping skill, but they'll learn it from doing the bookkeeping.

For how appraisal works, I gave a pretty good explanation in my last post. Don't worry about the skill, just pick someone. They'll learn when they go to the depot to trade.

>>
>>163174563
Dwarves. I was testing my magma trap and I think it might have accidentally killed someone (though the only thing that shows up in the deceased tab is a human bard).

I also have like dwarven 60 merchants chilling in my fortress right now, they aren't leaving for whatever reason. I think one of them has been at the fort for a full year now. I also got an elven caravan just now. This is all a bit weird since the civilizations screen shows that I'm at war with everyone and I'm not getting any migrants.
>>
>>163171362
Doesn't a higher skill in cheesemaking makes the dwarf make cheese faster, and more likely to make a higher quality cheese?

samefag here,
instead of feeling like/running an industrious militaristic society as i used to, i tend to make chill partially aboveground forts or have a lot of stuff going out outside like fruit harvesting and farming in combination with shallow (but still stone) layer fort activity. anyone else know this feel?

>>163175393
I wish it was possible to deliberately trample saplings or move them.

>>163175567
Stop playing humans.
>>
>>163175743
Honestly it does feel like human village, or maybe hobbit since they mostly live underground. Like I want metals and stuff but like with the lack of goblins in this version it doesn't feel all that necessary. Of course there are still megabeasts even if you don't breach the caverns. But, wooden crossbows and bone bolts are also an option, lol.
>>
>>163175170
Yeah the depot is accessible.

Actually I think I found the problem: quite a few of the horses and soldiers seem to be distracted. The first merchant group got attacked by a troglodyte, I assume they got stuck in that mode for whatever reason.

As for the pop cap, I had it set to a lower value in d_init at first but I raised it since the game was running smoother than expected. Each season I just get a "fortress has attracted no migrants" message, I assumed that was due to me being at war with the dwarves.

Anyway, I think I'll close down the depot room and give it a good magma scrubbing to get rid of the excess merchants. Maybe I'll use human visitors as labour if no new migrants show up.
>>
>>163175971
Being at war with your own civ doesn't cause a loyalty cascade now?
>>
How do you kill and loot from goblins/zombies/whatever in your cages?
>>
>>163176149
They have to be outside of the cage unless you like drown them. So either assign them to a chain or a pit. Then kill them. But you can loot them without killing them while they're caged if you claim all their worn items either by the claim cursor, or by the stocks screen. Assuming you have free stockpile space your dwarves will run up and forcibly strip them, dozens of dirty hands pulling their clothes off from between the cage bars. You can also use garbage dump/a garbage zone on their items but you still need to claim them as well, at least I think.

What investment? As long as you're making cheese in your fortress just do things normally and check on your cheesemaker(s) every year or so. When one of them has a high skill, enable cheesemaking on a random dwarf, queue up a bunch of cheesemaking jobs in two workshops, one with a profile set to only allow the skilled dwarf and the other set to only allow the unskilled dwarf, and see if the skilled one finishes faster.

>>163175925
>wooden crossbows and bone bolts are also an option, lol.
Lol indeed. I tried having a hunter use bone bolts recently and he pumped three quivers worth of them into the same kangaroo before the poor thing hobbled off the map. Back in 40d it was a relatively viable strategy, but not anymore.

>>163176764

Big trees update? 0.40.01?

Taverns, temples, libraries are in fort mode too, which is kind of a big deal. Dwarves have significantly changed emotions now, though it's not a huge big deal. There's wear and tear on armor and weapons now. Zombies got nerfed. You can specify images when making statues etc. The manager allows a lot of automation if you can figure out the interface. Dwarves can pick fruit.
I think there's some other stuff, but I can't remember at the moment.

>>163188719
That map is ridiculous. You could do exactly the same thing with Europe instead of Africa and it'd be just as accurate. Or with Asia instead and it'd be slightly more accurate.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it nice, but here's the only temple I've got.

The statues each depict one of the dwarven gods, made from materials more or less corresponding to their spheres. The coffins are just the tombs of some of the first few dwarves to die in my fortress, which I put there because I hadn't decided where to put my necropolis yet.

>>163205242
For example: the temple in my picture. All my dwarves go there to worship, regardless of which part(s) of the pantheon they worship. I intend to make six separate temples elsewhere later on, each dedicated to a particular deity.

Depends what you can mass produce - if it fits that criteria, and it produces happy thoughts (Like masterwork doors/coffers/statues/whatever or things made from precious metals) then put that into their rooms.
>>
>>163207684
If you have enough time before sunset you can build a bare bones camp right next to the lair and sleep there. (Right next to might mean right next to in terms of mid-level map tiles.)
>>
>>163208204
Actually, now that I think about it a minute, you probably don't even need the camp, so long as you can deal with the risk of something ambushing you in the night. Or you could just walk to the nearest settlement, since as long as you've got a companion you don't need to worry about bogeymen.

>We finished up the monks and other new critters, and today was the first real day engaging with agents enjoying their new covers. The last agent I looked at involved a human town on the border of two separate evil lands that was itself half-goblin by year 50. The demons could send in goblin agents to collect information that arrived there without much suspicion (they'd use humans for the towns farther from the border).

>Kutsmob Dentblack decided to assume the identity of a prophet of Oled the Gleeful Healing, the god of justice, and wandered around town shouting about the impending doom of the world. Over the years, he befriended a human priest as well as the gangster boss that hung out at the Fragrant Brunch tavern. The friendships are stored asymmetrically -- they thought of the 'prophet' as a buddy, while Kutsmob considered them information sources.

>At the same time, a human from a civilization to the south had infiltrated the town pretending to be a petty criminal, and a goblin from the other evil civilization, pretending to be a bard, had made it in as well. Kutsmob's tradecraft was lacking, and he was 'befriended' by both of these agents, though neither of them knew that Kutsmob was also an agent -- they just thought he was a good information source -- and Kutsmob himself simply thought he had a few buddies to help him pass time during his assignment. It was fun to load up the world and see them all talking together with the ganglord at the Fragrant Brunch.

You can remove varied grass tiles too, it's an option if that's what you want. I personally find people who remove varied grass tiles worse than troglodytes, throw-in-the-magma-pit material.

G-guys, I don't know how to get into Dwarf Fortress, I've been lurking around, I did read the sticky but it says everything is outdated.

Where should I go?
>>
>>163253978
type into google search: Obok Meatgod.
>>
>>163253978
You clearly need to work on your reading comprehension.
The first link doesn't say outdated, and the second to last link isn't outdated either.

In other words, get the newest DF version, read the quickstart guide on the wiki and play along. Ignore everything else.
>>
>>163254097
Wasn't that a cute story
>>
>>163253978
1. Download the game here: http://bay12games.com/dwarves/
2. Follow this guide: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Quickstart_guide

Don't install any mods. Don't install alternative tilesets. Don't make changes to the raws. Don't install tools like dfhack or therapist. Don't do any of those things unless you can at the very least make a decently working fortress in the game without all that stuff.
>>
>>163253978
The guides might be outdated, but they're fine for getting a good grasp on the game early on. If anything seems different, just take a look on the wiki

... something's missing.

So I'm making my first 64 bit fort and I'm working on re-creating my defensive setup from the last game (never got to test against a siege because lol army pathing bug) and I have this nagging feeling that I haven't gone full dorf yet.

This is the basic setup - one z-level high causeway to the edge of the map (every other edge blocked for wagons, natch) lined with statues and lava for decoration. Mostly for decoration. Shutters for the ballista batteries. Stockpiling wood there because I was too lazy to queue/build more wooden floor grates...

This is the real beaut, a minecart railgun (lel impulse ramps.) Above I've just got a lot of track stops laid atop of floor hatches for easy dropping. There's also a system to drop rocks directly into the lava (with hatches that open in the middle of the floor below linked to the same lever) to generate magma mist (hence the wood stockpile) and light fuckers on fire. Tested on a caravan, works fairly well.

The ramps in the first picture lead down into the trade depot which is fully equipped for water and magma flooding, drainange included.

So it's pretty comprehensive (the one thing I'm going to add is minecart railguns that fire minecarts down the lava channels at max possible velocity; they make magma mist as they skip along,) but...

... something's missing. It's not dorf enough yet. But I can't think of another good kill method to include that isn't just depressingly lazy.

Its a shame no more drawfags joined in, that was my first dwarf to die in my game, and in an awesome way too, when I still didnt know that fat could melt. That's why I screencaped his description page, so I wouldnt forget
>>
>>163277591

An obsidian caster, eh? That's not a bad idea, since I'll have magma and water up there already anyways. And I need a guaranteed autokill in case a fucking flying iron titan or some shit shows up, and caveins aren't really stylish enough.

Have to think about how to weaponize it properly, though. Won't be able to wait for a room to fill against a building destroyer, so I'll have to drop water off a bridge and then drop the magma on top of it, from a bridge higher up. And the timing has to be perfect, too, properly in-sequence. I've had trouble setting that up b-

- oh, I got it. A switch that fires a minecart off down a hallway with pressure plates spaced out, linked to everything in proper sequence. That'd do nicely. Wonder if I could use that to solve the minecart dumping problem I had, too.

Well since it worked well I'll explain what I was gonna say before, if you add them to your military squads, give them armor without a weapon, and set them to keep uniform while off-duty you can then set them off duty and re-enable the mining labor so they'll keep armor and grab a pick properly.

Depends on how hard you want to cheese the game. What I usually do is wander until I find some relatively harmless small animals and train against them, there should be some kind of wildlife in the surrounding area. Once you've found your animals, if you want to be extremely cruel in exchange for a lot of stat gain, intentionally gouge out its eyes and then repeatedly pommel strike, or some other mostly harmless attack, on a non-vital body part.

I haven't done this since they added pulping though, don't play a lot of adventurers, might make this less effective now.

Are you trying to use therapist with the latest version of the game? If so, that's your problem.
There's an alpha version of it somewhere.
LNP uses an older version of DF so you'll miss out on features.
Your best bet, IMHO, is to not rely on therapist and just play vanilla. You get used to the menus quickly.

>Your best bet, IMHO, is to not rely on therapist and just play vanilla. You get used to the menus quickly.

DFhack includes a ton of options for managing labor, including an in-game Therapist-like spreadsheet tool. It's kept up to date and is out for the 64 bit version, so I'd use that.
>>
>>163288035
Oh, I see. I guess I probably should have noticed the (Out of Date) in the OP.

thats fine, as plump helmets give seeds when eaten or brewed. High skill in growing/planting gives higher returns on harvesting I believe, so when starting out it might be a good idea to limit the amount of people farming in order to cultivate the few farmers skills. Food and alcohol are never really an issue, and if your really worried than collect some seeds from above ground and make an above ground farm plot/plots.

>>

why would you want /pol/ destroyed? do you understand where it's userbase would go? think for a minute.

/b/, /pol/, /tv/, /r9k/, /s4s/, /wsg/, and /soc/ are easily the most important boards on this site.
>>
>>163299972
That's partially true, but it's a known fact that /pol/ is the board that attracts most new users, especially during the elections. As long as it does this, it will probably keep leaking onto other boards.

I'm not suggesting that we put it down (not who you replied to btw), I'm just saying that /pol/ is and always will be a problem.
>>
>>163299972
I'm being wishful. What I'd like is that /pol/ stays in /pol/. That's why it's there. To contain your autism. This is why /mlp/ is there. Not because we care who or what you guys post, because we don't want you elsewhere.

Yet /pol/ single handedly rides the high horse of "muh freedums" and brings up /pol/ shit everywhere to the point it's insanely obnoxious. Imagine if suddenly a ponyfag starts talking about how a game developer doesn't like his fucking pony and how this makes all his game shit and then when told to fuck off he goes on an autism rampage about pony lore.

That's you. That's what you are. Cancer. Utter cancer. I can't wait till it's February 2017 and /pol/ stops being relevant again because you'll already be bored with political shit.

Only reason this shit leaks right now is because you want to be a topical person. You think you're an educated individual for regurgitating what /pol/ says everywhere you go. You think you're an edgy guy for stating out of the blue extremes.

All it shows is exactly how much of a newfag you are and how everything you say is on par with /b/ posting and /b/ got it's own global rule to keep its' shit there.

/pol/ should get the same treatment once your president elect finally sits in the white house.

I like what /pol/ is, counterculture is fun. I don't browse it and there's not much in the way of discussion as it's an echo chamber, but funny stuff pops out of it. I think people who whine about boogeymen are far more destructive than any hypothetical "shit board" users themselves. I've watched so many threads get derailed on different boards because people are screaming about the spooks. /g/ is always dreading the /v/ poster, /tv/ is scared to death of reddit, /his/ always wants /pol/ to leave, it's more damaging to thread quality to whine about it than to just ignore things you don't like.

Dwarf Fortress (officially called Slaves to Armok: God of Blood Chapter II: Dwarf Fortress) is a part construction and management simulation, part roguelike, indie video game created by Tarn and Zach Adams. Freeware and in development since 2002, its first alpha version was released in 2006 and it received attention for being a two-member project surviving solely on donations. The primary game mode is set in a procedurally generated fantasy world in which the player indirectly controls a group of dwarves, and attempts to construct a successful and wealthy underground fortress. Critics praised its complex, emergent gameplay but had mixed reactions to its difficulty. The game influenced Minecraft and was selected among other games to be featured in the Museum of Modern Art to show the history of video gaming in 2012.

The game has text-based graphics and is open-ended with no main objectives. Before playing, the player has to generate worlds with continents, oceans and histories documenting civilizations. The main game mode, Fortress mode, consists of selecting a suitable site from the generated-world, establishing a successful colony or fortress, combating threats like goblin invasions, generating wealth and taking care of the dwarves. Each dwarf is modeled down to its individual personality, has likes or dislikes and specific trainable skills in various labors. The second main game mode, Adventure mode, is a turn-based, open-ended roguelike where the player starts off as an adventurer in the world and is free to explore, complete quests, or even visit old abandoned fortresses. The combat system is anatomically detailed with combat logs describing organs getting pierced, fat getting bruised and limbs getting severed.

I hope toady does more with books/scrolls in the myth and artifact update, an upcoming update to the game Dwarf Fortress, which this general is supposed to talk about. I think it would be nice if someone read a book about a myth of a legendary artifact and the dwarf decided to become an adventurer and journey to find the artifact, using the knowledge from the book for possible locations or monsters to slay.

Oh yeah baby, why don't you come over here and "till" my "soil" with your "farm equipment". I want to be soooo "fertile" in order that I may produce "crops". We can then sell these "crops" at the local "farmers market" and thus earn our "livelihood". We'll be able to buy that "farmhouse" you've always dreamed of, and can "grow" more "crops" to sell. maybe even "raise" some "farm animals" such as "horses", "geese", and "pigs". We could even "hire" some "farmhands", and "expand" our "industry". Oh baby just think of all the "possibilities" that lie in store for us ;)

I'm working on a project to mass excavate the whole surface down a few layers because I like the coloring of black sand more than what was on the surface.

I'm only on year 1, ~55 dwarves, and yet FPS death is already looming. I'm down to ~35 fps. I've slaughtered most of my animals, I hardly go down 15 layers, no caverns disturbed. Any idea why such bad FPS?

Maybe because my dwarves are spending so much time on the surface (team of ~25 miners always up there) and the path planning uses A* so there's exponential growth in search space as they path because the area is wide open?

>>
>>163323321
>That was the other one
No, you're thinking of the right bug. You're just incorrect about what the bug was. It didn't have anything to do with fruit, and the result wasn't remotely "atomic-bomb like".
When trees were chopped down the tile data for some pieces weren't being properly updated, causing the game to think there was still material present. Next time the game did a growth check for those invisible tree bits or was forced to check for support some other way (usually building a construction) it would find an unsupported invisible bit of something and decide it needed to cave-in.
Thermonuclear fruit was a joke that a surprising number of players thought was descriptive of an actual bug.

you don't need to start on a river, there's usually fresh water to be found in the caverns, aquifer is even nicer than a river if you're on a good mountain embark where you don't need to crack it. rivers aren't all that bad, though, gators tend to spawncamp my embarks from time to time.

If there isn't an overhang you can just climb over it easily, with an overhang like that there is no way to get up to the fortification and over it.

If you don't want to make an adventurer at least pull up the arena, make a dwarf or goblin or something and climb around on the trees and buildings and see how things can move, where you can and can't climb, etc.

>>163325637

I remember vividly building houses and towers in the past, but I also remember it being a pain in the fucking ass because you had to do it in "bits" and serious planning was needed.

Is it still like this or can you place out "plans" and the dwarfs won't instantly kill themselves or get themselves stuck building a multi-floored, above surface, building?

I always loved having my military dwarves have an out door barracks with the training being done in sunlight. This is to condition them so sunlight won't blind them or hinder them under siege.

It's been years though so is this still a viable tactic? I used to have their training targets in a sort of field, walled of course, with the entrance to the underground "city" being quite close. The military dwarfs would live in here, eat here and train here and their equipment was brought to them. They had no other jobs and I always loved desinging these forts and then admiring them in that 3D addon tool that worked with DFhack somehow.

Does that still work? I want to get into DF again as the holidays are coming and sink a few nights into it, but I always had the 3D viewer on another screen and I'm autistic when it comes to fort design (symmetrical, stairs are only 1x1 or 1x2, 1x3, never a box as that makes no sense).

Does the game still die in terms of FPS because of how the AI does pathfinding?

Do you still get insane fort wealth from dozens of masterwork cooked meals that make all the fucking gobbos in the entire world raid you?

Is there any benefit of making your fort entirely surface based? I remember farming only on the surface being optional and plump helmets > all. Never needed to plant anything on the surface and all in all it was a bad idea as you can't control the weather that well.

Can you still make stone surfaces underground fertile with a water tunnel, flooding an area and then draining it, making it now contain mud?

Do wells still need 2 Z-levels or they are muddied and not good for drinking?

cont.

Do you still need wells for doctors to be able to keep injured dwarfs alive or can they now give them alcohol to drink? Sometimes it's easier to make beer, than to have a working underground well.

Are kennels still absolutely worthless?

Do cats still not do anything but attach themselves to dwarfs, get killed and send your best crafting dwarf into a murdering rampage because oh no NEDM.

I heard religion and taverns are a thing. What are their main purposes? Just good moods?

Are artifacts still insane, like how a dwarf will request shit you don't even have access to at all since you lack an anvil or even the ability to make a forge or you lack flux?

Is flux something you have to scout for ahead of time to make sure your map has or you're a slave to the caravans who might just bring fucking exotic wood -those pieces of shit elves every time I swear.

Are animals actually useful now other than making a kitchen coop or a turkey pen?

Are enemy raids still just random in terms of difficulty?

Can you fix all of those problems with just a drawbridge like usual? (picture related)

Are trap laid entrances still the king in stopping any enemy raid? I mean like an open entrance that is like a zig zag tunnel full of spike traps etc.

Do dwarfs still just wander near a lake and sink to their deaths because they are retarded?

Is fishing still an insanely good source of food?

Can you make a funnel from a lake into your cave now and fish from said it? I remember trying and it never really worked, even with planning but I did saw fish in my water tunnels.

Is energy production and distribution still an insanely complicated matter and can you still make those infinity energy "exploit" things? I forgot what they were called. Involved a bucket, a hole and a turbine thing.

If I want a OP fort, I need to find a flux + magma settlement right?

Anything new in terms of how metallurgy works?

Planning is stil necessary. dfhack allows you to choose the importance of building something, so ideally 1 would be completed before 2.
You can have above ground barracks, but walls can be climbed so you'll need outward facing upside down Ls.
Fort wealth is still ridiculous.
You can flood areas with water for mud still.
Wells still need to draw from the zone underneath.
>>163330361
Doctors still need wells.
Cats eat vermin like hamsters.
Taverns bring in travelers that can end up serving in your military and joining your fort.
Drawbridges are still king.
Traps are also king, but one's spotted by remembers of other races that visited peacefully will be uncloaked.

>>163329803
>he redid a lot of that when he put in the campsite thing.
He didn't redo any of that with the campsite thing. Adventurer camp construction happens on a completely different level of abstraction from fort mode construction. The only thing that's changed about constructing in fort mode in years is that dwarves rarely stand on the tile they're trying to construct and try not wall themselves out of your fort. The player is the only one who decide how structures are laid out or what order their elements are built in; dwarves have no agency at all in that regard, as always.

I remember having a world with a very dominant elvish precense and they could cut down anything in seconds and their bows were like fucking sniper rifles. Yes a well armored unit hardly felt anything but they were so accurate if you didn't have your entire dwarf covered he was sure to be killed in one turn. Not to mention they hacked hordes of gobbos in no time. Light armor makes them super fast which in turn makes your guys miss every hit and I've had a few of my military dwarfs just drop because of exhausting trying to hit them.

Having full plate though pretty much made them unkillable to elves which was fun, but I remember still having a few of my guys die to bow shots from long bows.

Don't elves also pick up mithril at some point or am I just imagining things? I just recall the descriptions for the wood types mentioning the rare wood that only elves have access to being as strong as steel and light as fuck.

No, but you asked a ton of wikiable questions that you could answer yourself in 10 minutes, especially since you already know what to look for. I'm telling you the same thing I would tell a brand new player asking questions about basic mechanics. It's not out of spite or annoyance or anything like that. Need wells yes.
Kennels are crap.
Cats got drunk and overdosed briefly, they kill vermin too.
Dwarves have a need system now which influences all their shit, having satisfied needs gives a bonus to skill performance and combat accuracy, unfulfilled needs give a (smaller comparitively) minus to skill/accuracy, taverns replace meeting areas entirely, temples and libraries fulfill other needs some dorfs have.
They can still ask for shit you don't have, but it's usually shit like shells or wool when you're in a desert or ocean.
Flux shows up in the site search filters when embarking.
Various animals have uses for weaving, milking, happy thoughts from owning, hunting, and the usual butchering.
You can set an absolute cap on invaders if your fps would tank out, if you live in the right areas (and set [NATURAL_SKILL:DISCIPLINE:x] high enough apparently) you can potentially get thousand strong armies.
Technically yes, but enemies do climb now.
Traps get clogged up bit by bit and troops won't charge in mindlessly like they did before.
The lake question makes no sense, what else are they supposed to do after seeing their reflection drowning and wanting to save it?
It can be depleted.
It's iffy, hard to get the vermin fish to stock a cistern reliably.
It's better understood now, a water pump with the output going into a tile where a waterwheel is over can power the waterwheel, linking the waterwheel to the pump can power the pump, add more pumps/wheels as needed.
Flux+iron ore+volcano is handy.
Armor takes damage now, and joint transfer happens, so it's complicated.

>Light armor makes them super fast which in turn makes your guys miss every hit
Armor doesn't work that way. Armor encumbrance only affects movement speed. It used to also affect attack speed. It doesn't make any difference to a creature's dodge chance.

No, elves don't get mithril. It's not in the game. And they don't have any special woods other than the one I mentioned.
Here's a list of every wood in the game. Their weights are listed, as that's the only mechanical difference between any two kinds of wood. Except for nethercap, which also has a fixed temperature.

Nope, it's still last designated -> first built as far as doling out construction jobs goes, anything beyond that is just a question of who makes it to the job site first. Checking for support is the sole responsibility of the overseer, the dwarves just build what they're ordered to.
>>

>and troops won't charge in mindlessly like they did before.
Nothing about that has changed. Invaders still take the shortest path available into your fort and make no effort to avoid traps beyond a dodge check.

i'm pretty sure toady doesn't have any health insurance, which on one hand sucks because i don't want him to die, and i also want his way of life to succeed, but on the other hand, he might actually die an american death so we can get our hands on the source code, and then some insane bugfixing and code-tidying/reimplementing would make the game endlessly more enjoyable in the long run. i love both toady and the game, and the game is already fun, but openDF would be completely amazing, brilliant and superior in every single way.

i'd like to play it. right now there's a ton of things you basically can't ever do if you don't want the game to go "well, that was all cool so far, but you can't continue playing now."

but yeah, it is the best game. but it's also weird, you know? weird how it's a text-based game with interactions building on top of other interactions, but slashing up a charcoal quadruped doesn't give you usable charcoal lumps, saving takes forever, even if you don't wanna do fancy shit it's ridiculously unoptimized and resource-intensive (heat, noise, unplayable on the go without internet), and the fact that everything you do makes it crawl closer to heat death. it's just unfun to want to play as well as possible, having your way with the game and having fun doing so, while constantly having to NOT do things so you can continue to sort of not do things. like every time you trade away useless crafts you have to feel a teeny tiny bit frustrated, because you're just filling up useless memory registers slowing down your shit that will never get cleaned out. there's a whole lot of counterintuitive gameplay arising from all the weird things, and i'd just love to see them gone. still amazingly outstanding gameplay as it is, though.

4chan in general is always pretty counterculture. In the past we went against the right wing christians, when they were the group with power in America. Now that left has usurped that role we are pretty antagonistic to that. Trump hasn't even gotten into office yet and is far from being the societal norm, so to expect a sudden change is absurd.
>>
>>163337895
there is a lot of conceptual pioneering going on with the design in dwarf fortress, using tables of tokens stacked on tables of tokens with if-then-else design and such. in fact the only multi-layered table procedural generation system I can think of off of the top of my head that predates dorf is when the rare drop table in runescape gets triggered, though I'm sure there are plenty of other games that toyed with the concept. dorf took it to not just a new level but a new plane of existence, and game designers still haven't really picked up on it, I think largely because they don't actually understand what dwarf fortress is and never played it. the reason stuff like rimworld and prison architect don't maintain a following as well as dwarf fortress is because they focused on the basic mechanics of fortress mode instead of on how emergent procgen mechanics work. I think as more designers start picking up on this, you're going to start seeing more games as interesting as dwarf fortress, maybe as soon as within the next few years. it's only a matter of time before some producers with a big pile of cash throw money at the concept and turn emergent procedural generation into a standard.

of course a pioneer is going to make design mistakes. for someone beating a path through the jungle, toady is doing a damned incredible job.

also, I find it easier to have fun with dorf by starting new forts after playing one for 10-20 years, doing wildly different and sometimes almost random things with embarks just to see how it goes. the "perfect fort" mentality is just fine if it's your shit, but it gets pretty sad when your favorite fort slows down to 6 fps.

great points. but it doesn't have to be a "perfect" fort, since a whole bunch of stuff can cut your playability in half - just a bit of running water, or a bit of trading, or just the tiniest bit of breeding makes you lose out on gameplay fun. i think you can only start over so many times in a new biome or for other reasons different embark before it stops being wildly different. you end up weirdly disincentivized to interact with the game. if you don't plan on running a perfect fort with perfect adherence to fps rules, you simply don't get to play much because the game disallows it for largely arbitrary reasons. i get that it's toady's project, and that's probably exactly why i like it so much, but i'd much rather have him just lead and command a small team of coders. something like a super modular openDF with a toady-approved and -maintained version would be really cool.
>>
>>163340378
He tried working with someone once, it didn't work because the guy had no character and toady is autistic.
tl;dr toady is autistic so we are stuck with him until someone makes him have an accident
>>
>>163340378
after minecraft happened I'd rather see new teams tackle new projects of this nature rather than have people step in to help develop dorf. I can only imagine what minecraft would be like today if it remained notch's basement project, as he was pretty much just translating dwarf fortress to first-person 3D anyway. there is a massive pile of cash trying to push in zach and tarn's doors already, it's a huge gamble whether letting other people help with game design works or not, could easily be a slippery slope. I trust toady's vision more than anything when it comes to df.

another random example is how gay and gray star wars episode 7 is. when you begin removing the core autism from something, even if that autism is a little bit damaging like with the prequels, it can backfire.

I'm waiting until someone puts together a good space exploration game with emergent gameplay and autism simulation, that's something I'd rather see a team do than what's already a treasure of a game.

i don't feel like this applies too much. DF opensourced over night would still be DF, only with vastly better tools. there would just be a much better dfhack, and many different flavours of masterwork-style mods that could go way deeper. original DF could still remain, or be maintained by someone else to be as close to a toady version as possible. i just wish minecraft would have long been superceded by a clone, like back in 2009. but i guess there's minetest and its forks now...

>>163344789
Here's the problem: do you know what Toady intends to do with df? Where does he plan to go with it? How is he going to get there?

You know what you like about the game, as it is, as it was, and you probably know what you hope it will end up as.

If the universe split right now and you were handed the source code and programming savvy to pick right up and continue working on it, there is no way the game you end up making would resemble what Toady ends up making.

True, you'd have the advantage of access to the code, and probably be able to avoid falling into the "df-like=fort sim" trap by recognizing how important the emergent storytelling aspect is, but it would come at the cost of no longer having Toady developing whatever crazy shit he decides should be in/added/fixed/broken/and so forth, wouldn't it?

well, there's at least at least a very rough idea of where the game is gonna go available through the roadmap and podcasts, which are basically just future talk. but yeah, that's specifically what i was talking about - trading the cool changes an addtions of the next 10 years of DF development for dwarf fortress as it is right now at this moment, locked at 100 fps no matter what you do. i'm not even talking about a hypothetical dfhack with unrestricted access (world embark, less bugs, modular ui, parallel games, daemon/client, multiplayer...) neccessarily, just trying to preserve the gameplay of the latest current release while only implementing ideal FPS, it would change a lot about dwarf fortress. i was specifically positing the choice between future-DF with years of great changes and present-DF with endless deep modifications instead of all these technical issues.

what i really want is for toady to simply opensource the project and become its maintainer. he already lives off donations, and there are already modifications that drastically alter his vision. they're just inefficient. precisely because DF is so novel and cool, it will always have these huge overhauls and other people's game ideas built on top of it. they just wouldn't suck as hard if people could just fork DF. toady's dwarf fortress would never die. honestly, if anything, opensourcing DF could only increase his income.

A) She's not making gaming anything. She might be making gaming OUT to be something, but that's different. Why do you get so riled up by differing viewpoint, whether they are wrong or right (or a mix) there's no harm in approaching something with a different view.

B) There is something strange I've noticed. this insistence that gaming ISN'T sexist. I mean it seems to exists solely on pointing out how someone was wrong about something. but it completely forgets to address that gaming IS sexist. I mean we've known about it since forever, 4chan admits it. I mean to say that gaming doesn't have a gender issue is ignoring the countless hours pretending to be women on runescape. I mean I was reading about gamers using their girlfriends voice on halo and getting harassed since like 2001 (and I'm sure there was more stuff before)

It's obvious that gaming is a male centric (particularly young males who are horny and don't know how to behave). No one should be arguing that. Now whether or not you agree with Anita's approach is another matter (fun fact, she's actually pretty mellow esp before 4chan decided to fight her) she's was just pointing stuff out. But for some reason just pointing out the sexism is somehow "sjw cunts abused developers"

Bloody fucksticks we went from one of the highest points in /dfg/ with ninedots, drew, and honestanon posting art, game discussion, fort postan, and dumb jokes... to... this shit.

The only sexism I care about is this: female dwarves no longer default to being bearded, why should they be mutilated from the start like some poor kidnapping victim shaved by goblins as a baby?

Only the meme boards (/b/, /pol/, etc), and they only went from being populated by children to being populated by 50yo trump supporters. Not a big loss.

The rest of the boards are okay. Some of them, like /p/, were always for well adjusted people (what you call normies), but those tend to have the highest quality.

You aren't responding to her. You are simply echoing your opinions about her in an obscure video game general that she'll never read. You're shitting up 4chan, that's all.

I meant that she is making it out to be. Of course I get riled up when my hobby gets unfairly antagonized, who wouldn't?
Gaming might be male centric and pander to males sometimes, but she isn't arguing that. She is arguing that sexy females are a bad thing and that even having violence towards female characters is a bad thing. She's a literal scam artist and a bad person. She advocates for censorship and is a negative force for gaming.

I think what ruined 4chan is people not talking about Dwarf Fortress in the /dfg/.

Anyway, I'm having some trouble with my dwarves. I started my first haunted embark in years, and I'm having trouble with burrows. I immediately had to move everyone underground because of smoke; but after it cleared and I disabled the alert, none of my dwarves will go back outside and are disabling workshop activities. They won't even mine out the rest of my fortress, despite being within the burrow. Should I delete the burrow and just try again? Is this a common bug or am I just being retarded?

I read that you are trying to make 'male centric' being a bad stuff, where its a completely neutral thing
There are 'female centric' activities/jobs/whatever in the world. But for some reason, feminists think that equality is making each gender stick up their noses in each niche stuff from the other gender, when its not
In 'female' japanese games, there is a focus on romanticism, instead of erotica, because as a group, women dig that more
I dont dig up romanticism as much, I prefer erotica, but Im not gonna try to publically (on a culture-level platfrom like social webs)bash them for having unrealistic ideas about romance
Do you wanna know why? Because they use that entertaining material as I use ero-games, as an interactive little entertaining activity that wont have any effect on my opinions of the real world
The roblem with feminism is that they try to assume everything has a significative direct social/political effect in the world, when its not, thats why you see them atacking every part of society

>How do I reach the 'maximum potential' of each of these zones?
Temples don't really need anything. You can put some chests in it for instruments, and people might play them while they're there.
Taverns need chests for mugs and instruments. I'd keep booze and food nearby too.
Libraries should have bookcases and books, so that people might go read them and potentially learn things from them. Keep paper and stuff handy for your scholar to write shit

>What is the 'tavern keeper'/'performer'/'scholar' role?
Tavern keeper cleans shit up. I don't think they do much else. In adv mode they do bring you drinks and such. They're not that important but they're a nice addition.
Performer performs, either in tavern or temple
Scholar writes shit and contemplates shit

>Is there any benefit to permiting performers to stay? So far it looks like I just get 20 useless resource drains sitting around
If they're experienced they might cause good thoughts. 20 is overdoing it to. I'd establish accidents.
>How do I use the military folks I let stay at the fort?
Put them in a military squad. Note that they can't be squad leaders, so you need your own dorfs to lead em
>How do I effectively start a paper/book industry for my library?
I'm not experienced on it, but I'd say use the wiki

Actually totally the opposite "whether or not you agree with Anita's approach is another matter" "just pointing out the sexism" again any negative connotation is on your side. Remember censorship is a neutral word too, self-censorship is actually considered a good thing (and actually a skill) in society.

>The problem with feminism is that they try to assume everything has a significative direct social/political effect in the world, when its not, thats why you see them attacking every part of society

The problem with political science is that they try to assume everything has a significative direct social/political effect in the world, when its not, thats why you see them attacking every part of society

Are you surprised that people who's area of interest is the marginalization of women, focus exclusively on marginalization of women? It doesn't bother me when an Russian foreign policy student only posts about Russia on twitter, why does it bother you than feminists only focus on feminist issues?

>The problem with political science is that they try to assume everything has a significative direct social/political effect in the world, when its not, thats why you see them attacking every part of society
That's really just false comparation

In this context, feminism is not reffering to a whole generalized group, but to a specific group of media journalism that completely focus on that, pushing biased/subjective ideas in the way of passive agresive and manipulative ways
This small group of people push their ideas using mass guiltyness for it, are in general obnoxious, mean, ignorant and manipulable
Not only that, but their ideas are debatable in most causes, actually true in some, and very stupid in others
Trust me, if political science, or a random russian student had the intensity of pressing ideas as this group, you'd also be concerned
Mostly because the only important and meaningful subject that'd deserve so much atention of the three is political science
