Educate your dumb ass, slings were always terrifyingly strong. Cortez said incan slings, which weren't even all that great in design, could leave holes in their steel armor that was "indistinguishable from those left by musket shots".

A staff sling is a pretty massive difference from a normal sling.

Muskets didn't either. Just about no weapon at the time would punch through properly tempered plate armor, you were damn near invincible in a suit of the thing. Crossbows do well against chain but against full plate they more or less bounce off.
Slings do damage through blunt force, the ammunition they use was very heavy compared to other weapons. If it hits you on the head even if you have a helmet you're going to be rattled pretty bad.

Because archery at the time was different. With out steel arrowheads you didnt have the penetration power, most archers were horse archers firing weaker bows. You did not need to condition your body for years to be able to even fire a warbow. Effective horse archery is a significant skill to learn, and in classical periods slings were things kids played with so most people would know how to use them. They dont take physical conditioning so much as mental experience to get your aim down which is something most boys would develop on their own.

Its an great but flawed mod. First the obvious, the items look dated, its after all a mod for M&B later ported to warband and lacks many of the shaders.
Second, the faction imbalance is ridiculous. Elves will absolutely destroy everything. The good factions will curbstomp the evil faction 10 times out of 10. If you decide to play evil your only hope is autocalc. Dont even try to play as an orc or have an orc army, a single elf will kill 20 of them without breaking a sweat, your best bet in the evil faction are the evil humans.
The start is very, VERY slow, with lord and guild missions making you travel from one side of the map to the other for a few points. Once the war starts things get better though and playing as one of the more balanced factions, like the dwarves or bearmen can be lots of fun.
