FSN is also an explicit critique of the concept of a hero, so juxtaposing the Christian-mythology oriented selfless King Arthur against the egoistic Gilgamesh is really a brilliant turn of comparative mythology weaved into storytelling.

The thing about Nasu that struck me as most innovative is that he mixes his love for explosions and cool techniques with a genuine understanding of initiatic magic. He understands the stuff that is written by people like Evola, for example, who states that the rituals carried out by various cultures weren't merely for effects, but for genuine self-cultivation, and aligning oneself with the cosmic order. The mages in the Nasuverse aren't plain superheroes, but seekers of knowledge, and their primary goal is to attain the 'root'. This makes them both ruthless and enlightened. I haven't seen any other fantasy that explores this aspect, except maybe the books of Herman Hesse like the Glass Bead Game - but those aren't really fantasy. This is why Nasu mages are genuinely magical and esoteric, because they understand the base idea of what magic is.

Furthermore, Nasu also makes fun of this by having the mages use underhanded means to 'cheat the cosmic system', destroying the idea of rituals in their normal sense. So he doesn't just brand namedrop, but he frequently aims to re-evaluate the position of these well-established myths in a new context. He reinterprets Angra Mainyu as less of a being of evil, than as a sacrificial lamb that people can project their ideas on (which follows Rene Girard's concept of Mimetic Desire). He also deals with Vampires in their purest form, as a representative aspect of the abnormal parts of Nature itself - which is why he weaves an elaborate myth about them stemming from the Earth's desire to eradicate blight caused by humans.

In terms of pure myth-making, rather than poesy, he's the closest you'll get to a contemporary equivalent of William Blake.

The idea of mages being seekers of a universal truth, and power being a simple side effect of that, actually isn't uncommon at all, even in Western literature.

The Malazan Book of the Fallen is one example of that, where magic is a means of communion with the divine. But even reaching back in to Lord of the Rings, perhaps the archetpyical western fantasy, magic was something special.

All magic is that series was based around either moving with or against the universal harmony. Simply living your life day to day was magical, as your love, sadness, tears and laughter echoed into eternity on the eternal harmony of Eru. Or you could defy that, and seek limited material strength, at the cost of discordance.

You'd never know it from the novels alone, but Gandalf was actually the LotR equivalent of an angel, as were all wizards.

That's an interesting and sound take, but I was talking more about a different and scholarly aspect. I've not really touched Malazan, but I don't think LotR really touches on the cultivation process and initiatic development, although it has those ideas.

China has an entire genre based around a Confucian/Taoist idea of cultivation and self-development called Xianxia. Shounen manga power levels, and Eastern fantasy writers like Nasu draw a whole lot from those tropes. Frequently, you'll see the slow development of one's powers through meditation in those kinds of stories. Magic users also tend to be both scholars and fighters at the same time, deeply involved in their study and cultivation.

I compared Nasu to Hesse because of that scholarly aspect that appears in the Glass Bead Game. One part of Kara no Kyoukai's 5th movie is taken up by a long stretch of two mages discussing their craft and the metaphysics of it. You don't exactly see that with mages like Gandalf. Most esotericists and real magicians, like Crowley and Evola, were scholars after all, and they dealt as much in things like philosophy and the natural sciences beyond their rituals and spellcasting. They invented paradoxes (e.g. Zen Koans) and symbols to try and grasp the great Mystery - exactly like how Araya Souren tried to find the root by his creation of an apartment complex to represent the Taiji.

It could just be taste though. This kind of Eastern scholarly fantasy with a touch of the esoteric/obscurantist and metaphysical appeals to me more than what I've seen from Western Fantasy so far. I've heard that LeGuin's Earthsea series touches on the Eastern variant though.

It isn't as good as he claims, in my opinion. It's ridiculously over-the-top in some many areas to the point where it's hard to take some of the content seriously. It's actually quite entertaining as far as the text is concerned, but you lose some of the profundity in the progress. Too many tonal shifts and so on. The script does show Nasu's improvements in regards to his technical abilities. Strictly speaking there's better flow and a lot less material which I would deem boring. Objectively speaking as a game itself it's pretty bad. It would have been much better as just a straight up visual novel, I have no idea why they went with a gameplay format for Extra and CCC when it's literally dogshit unless you're emulating and fastforwarding through all the bad gameplay. I think I would give an 8/10 for the script and a 5/10 for the gameplay itself.

In my opinion Mahoyo was much better but since the Japanese audience just wants more Fate it's likely all they're going to make. Doubly so these days since due to the anime adaptions and mobage garbage their primary fanbase are all Fate secondaries and would be even less likely to give heed to another traversal in a different franchise.

SubaHibi, Sakura no Uta, and Himawari strengths come from their monomaniacal exploration of a single human theme (Happiness, Art, Growing Up). In this aspect they all excel.

Himawari's comedy is at its best when it gets as insane as parts from SubaHibi - like having gun battles in school, any scene with Akira in the third route, and being chased by a heat-seeking missile.
