Fargus' ship is objectively the best ship in all the outrealms. It got boarded by 3 ships at once and came out unscathed.

I only really dislike the self-inserts because they hijack the story.

In the hype months after Awakening was announced, I got really interested in what Chrom's story was going to be since he seemed to be an angrier, more passionate and fallible lord than usual to contrast with the calm and kind Marth, the focused, valorous Ike and the inconsistent mess that was Micaiah of the last few games.

Instead he plays second fiddle the whole game as Robin and Lucina suck all his thunder until he just becomes that one unit you have to bring to every story chapter and is responsible for the "bad" ending.

But I'll give Awakening credit that at least it tried to give the lord and avatar equal importance at times. Then Fates comes along and makes the avatar the lord so they don't have to bother having a main character that will inevitably become background noise in the face of the almighty (You).

Games with self inserts typically have said-character be more or less a blank slate that you can create from the ground up, or largely silent so that your actions and thought processes can actually have space to fit into the character. Take the Pokemon protags for instance, they don't speak and have no real character of their own which allows you use your imagination as you see fit. The difference is that the dialogue in WRPGs really only tend to happen at set points in the game. In Fire Emblem, support conversations can be read just about any time in the story, thus have to be limited to making up new disconnected scenarios for characters. Not to mention just how many more characters Fire Emblem casts have over your typical WRPG parties.

Part of why FE4 is praised so much is that it uses situational conversations instead of supports to flesh out their characters.

Honestly doesn't seem too different when taking into account fundamental game mechanic differences desu, with Corrin having more meaningful control over the story outcome. There's also the fact that you have a Castle to customize in Fates.

There's literally no reason to believe this nonsense. When they don't like certain aspects of self-inserts, they make it known. Take the Avatar's child in Awakening and Fates for example. Honestly this is way more apparent in Fates. I'm doing my first BR playthrough in Lunatic and sometimes it's extremely frustating. I even put the difficutly in classic but despite that i'm still ressetting a lot. I think older FE games (ignoring hardest difficulties and FE5) gave you more "control", you could design a strategy without trial and error and the games didn't punish you as hard, you also had multiple ways to beat a map while in BR it feels like your options are way more limited.

Anyways, while that was actually pretty interesting, I don't have as much a problem with how the Japanese only relate to certain kinds of characters. My biggest problem is what they /do/ relate to. In the west, characters tend to succeed and earn respect because of personality traits or characteristics that anyone could posses. They succeed because they're brave, or strong, etc. and that makes up for any character flaws they might have. In the east, they're successful/respected because they were basically born that way, or otherwise lucked themselves into the hero roll, and they do all this /in spite/ of the character flaws.

It's the difference between "You can be great despite [blank] if you play to your strengths!" instead of "You can be great despite [blank] if you're lucky!"

And kids didn't "bomb all around" in comparison, what are you talking about? Just like with the Awakening poll, they were generally more on the mid-to-lower side, but you had some close to the top-10 in the Fates poll. Thanks friend. I actually plan on attempting to change her outfit entirely. I'm pretty much using Marisa's sprite as a base so I'll eventually change her clothes to match Oboro's. I just used the solid green to cover some negative space until I get to it later.

With all the enemies done with save for the three buggers hovering around the boss, I went and carted Marth back to the other end of the map. Fuck difficulty-induced backtracking.

Also, I forgot to mention earlier a weird observation that the axe-wielding enemies that harass Marth's group are Barbarians, but the enemies harassing Ogma and co are Pirates.

Well some of us were pretty satisfied with the games, at least Conquest, and are fine with admitting that it wasn't perfect. A game doesn't have to be perfect to be enjoyable, or else I'd not like any game in the series. Not that I'm saying Conquest is the best in the series but yeah.

Also not everyone is bothered by fanservice, especially when other aspects, as mentioned, were satisfying.
