I don't know that an erotical intimacy is "breaking" it as much as building on it, though. Furthering it. The natural (and correct) instinct in this scenario is to beat the offender into a bloody pulp.

It's true. Max has near infinite possibilities. Ways to go back and save nearly everyone with little risk of any other disaster happening.
And yet she, and we, are presented with none. Instead it's railroaded into a stupid situation she and Chloe never would have accepted.
I get that the ending can't be perfect because that's not the story they were trying to tell, but the ending is so imperfect that it's insulting.
Insulting to us, insulting to Max, and insulting to everyone who put their effort into making the game.

You might even go as far as to say the story they were trying to tell was incompatible with the time travel mechanic they decided to incorporate. Strangely enough, I suspect these were the first two design decisions they made, and they never stopped to think whether they actually worked together.

Really if you want to have a tragedy in a time travel story, you change time in a way that both creates a new life and destroys a previously existing life (accidentally re-roll someone's dna by changing the conditions of conception). Then you ask if it's right to revert the timeline and 'kill' the new life to restore the old one.

The story could have worked well enough with a few changes.
The most major of being that saving Chloe was the FIRST thing Max did with her power. Then she saw a vision of the storm after saving her.
Time travel is a hard element to do and they did it fairly well throughout the game. Some stuff required a little suspension of disbelief (Like Max's autopilot or how destroying her photo results in her ending up back in the Dark Room), but that can only be done so much- the entire plot hinges on believing Max saving Chloe caused the storm.
Which just does not add up for the reasons mentioned; it's not the first thing Max does and we are led to believe the storm is coming before that point.

The game definitely would have heavily benefited from people going through the story to make sure it added up from start to finish, keeping character behavior consistent, more time devoted to side plots (Even if some stuff was intended to be ambiguous), and making sure that by the time the final choice came that the player knew the choices they were presented with were really the only ones.

Max is a self-insert only to a small degree. She is not a blank slate and there are some choices in the game that are defying what she wants.
Most of them are just giving her the ability to try something new and go back if she doesn't like the results. While others, most notably sacrificing Chloe, go against every single thing she stands for and should not have even been choices.
Because of the diary, it's very easy to see Max's feelings and thoughts and they remain mostly consistent throughout all playthroughs of the game.

Plus Max has come a long way in taming her powers. She can use them with full control for minor things or for some fun little tricks and she doesn't have any problems.

The smile does look a tiny bit odd. We see them smile in-game, so more than that I think it's because youngecho uses references and seemingly models even facial expression to fit those references.

Which is not a bad thing, and even kind of necessary in as much as these animations are supposed to be a little more detailed than the in-game facial animations.

But they've said that they didn't want to put in that much work anymore as the level of detail of some of the earlier works required, and that's noticeable with the new one.

Finished the game for the first time last night. Ask me anything? (And what do you guys even talk about here, etc...)

I think, looking back, the game feels a bit overrated. I did like the style and atmosphere of it, especially in the early episodes, but once the story started getting darker and darker, the less I enjoyed it. Not to mention episodes 4 and 5 just started to feel bloated for no reason. I wish they had cut out something, and fit it all within just 4 episodes.

Is the commentary track worth listening? I'm assuming there are some sort of audio snipplets in the maps, that you can listen to?

Also: why did the native americans never make an appearence? They were hinted at some many times, yet nothing ever came out of it? That, and the ultimate futility with the choices, bugged me the most. I don't know what the game was supposed to be telling me.

I agree with this somewhat.

We've come up with some ways they could have reduced the number of scenes by quite a bit. Almost all of Ep4's cluedoing could have fit into a slightly modified Episode 3, for example. Instead of breaking into the Principal's office (which didn't make much sense at the time anyway, nor did they actually get any particularly relevant information from doing so), they could have broken into Nathan's room (which would have made much more sense) and collected his burner phone, etc, then and there. Then, the next morning, Max could have snooped just a tiny bit more in Madsen's garage to collect the info she picks up in Episode 4. And finally, when searching Frank's RV a few scenes later, they could have picked up his client list.

Instead, most of the snooping in the same areas in Episode 3 didn't reveal much, and all the relevant information was gathered by returning to most of these locations in Episode 4. There has been some speculation from an early screenshot of episode thumbnails that the barn was featured in Episode 3, suggesting that doing all this stuff earlier WAS the initial plan much earlier in conception, with the opening of the Dark Room being the end-of-episode kicker instead of Wheels. Mere speculation though, and it would have meant a lot more content to fill in the big gaps in Episodes 4 and 5, but we haven't seen as many hints for that.

I think opinions are mixed on Episode 4 somewhat. Some people really liked it (for example, it was my favourite overall), but some people didn't like it (I've heard complaints like it being unnecessarily dark).

But I think a lot of people's opinions about it are worse retrospectively, given that it really started to build on a lot of the mystery elements, with none of them actually being resolved in Episode 5. It seemed much more mysterious and tense than it does now.

But the decline starts the instant they find the Dark Room.

They find what is clearly a crime scene and there's tons of evidence, none of which they take/photograph. Then they find the body of a missing girl and still don't call the Police, or by this point the FBI.
Just a few scenes before Chloe can kill Frank and Max says it's pretty much her duty to rewind it to prevent Chloe from having that guilt or going to prison. But then Chloe's (Entirely justifiably) pissed off and out for blood, but Max does nothing to try to calm her down. The player's not presented with the option, even if it ultimately would have been for naught.
This continues once Chloe gets the text from Nathan's phone. It is obviously a trap and they don't even consider not going or calling the Police. They are forced, by writers crippling their ability to think, to walk into an ambush.
The player had a good deal of freedom with Max during the first three episodes, the last two remove that freedom and put Max in the hands of someone who is not thinking.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "writing". I had a few issues with the second half of the episode (the pacing with the Vortex Party scene, and the fact that it was almost entirely unimportant to the plot despite being foreshadowed for most of the game), but nothing too serious.

I know that a lot of people /hated/ the Jefferson reveal, and that killed it for them. But that was also literally the very end of the episode, so hard to compare it to the rest.

I liked the Vortex party in Episode 4, but that's about it. (Curiously it was also the only placed that I needed to cheat a bit, by looking from the net what to do. Going in from the other side of the pool wasn't very obvious, eventho I did walk there briefly. Just not close enough for the pool line thingie, I guess.)

Anyway. People have talked about how they got dem feels with the game, but even that was a bit of a let down for me. The alternative Chloe scenario was a tough one, but other than that, I mostly felt just frustration in the end.

I think it absolutely deserves the success, the attention and the awards. There's a lot the game does and tries that it deserves praise for, even if it doesn't always have the greatest polish or finish. And also plenty that it deserves criticism for.

While that's obviously to do with personal preference more so than narrative merit, I do agree not only that it went too dark for its own good (and hardly recovered from it), but also that the transition was not done all too well. At all - pacing, execution, character and plot authenticity, tonal and thematical shift and more aspects of it, all had issues, some of them irritiatingly glaring. One of those also being that "yet nothing ever came out of it" thing with all the hinted-at subplots; it ultimately lacks the narrative depth in that regard that it had always intrigued with - and even though there's an argument to be made that not going all hocus pocus helps keep the narrative character-centered, and that some of that "nothing ever came of it" was certainly narrative intent, it's still just not satisfying and could have been handled better.

It's true, this is really dumb. I can sorta understand Chloe just getting super mad and running back to her truck without thinking about collecting evidence, but Max not grabbing some of those folders and/or taking some photographs on the way out is just dumb. Again, I agree, but I think the game justifies this, even if very poorly, with Chloe doing her "fuck the police, I'ma get my own revenge" line after they arrive at the Vortex Club party. If they had made it a little more frantic, so Max is /forced/ to chase her through the party more (rather than stopping to casually chat with every man and their dog) and not give her a chance to use her phone ... maybe. So, yeah, dumb, but kinda understandable if you're being charitable to the game.

The text says the evidence has already been removed - it either has, in which case there's nothing there, or it hasn't ... in which case, you just say "yep, still there" ... then call the police. Their bumbling in just doesn't make sense, even if they did have some good reason to not call the cops.

As for the other points I won't address them because I dot agree with them at all and neither does a majority of /lisg/.
It's pretty firmly Bae > Bay here. And people will justify their choice (As if saving Max and Chloe were not justification enough) with evidence that the storm was not that bad. As well as that Chloe dying would not fix everything, perhaps only make it worse.

Just prior, they found Rachel's body. Chloe is totally pissed, out for blood. The scene is about Chloe running off into the party with the intent to /kill/ Nathan, and Max is supposed to be trying to find her.

But the entire scene is just Max casually having the same conversation with a number of her classmates:

Classmate: "Hey Max, you look really worried, what's up?"
Max: "Do you know if Nathan is here?"
Classmate: "No, I haven't seen him."
Max: "Well if you see him, stay away!"

All the tension the game had managed to build up just prior to entering the party was totally washed out. And /then/ it ramps back up again when the girls head back to the junkyard.

I feel like they should have played that scene a lot differently. Maybe make it a bit of a puzzle about Max trying to navigate through the party as quickly as she can: Chloe never finds Nathan, but maybe the "failure state" of the scene could be Chloe getting up into the VIP section, threatening on of Nathan's friends about his location, and accidentally shooting them, knocking over part of the scaffolding/DJ booth into the pool (electricity + water = no no), etc.

I dunno, otherwise I feel like the scene doesn't really serve much of a purpose, and it really felt like it killed the pacing and tension.

Jefferson makes it in time, appears in the junkyard, right behind max, completely unheard in the dead silent night.

Oh players, by the way, he also kidnapped victoria before coming there. Victoria, the most popular girl that everyone wants to hang out with, in her most popular party, who was just announced the winner and all lights were on her. Who also didnt even think jefferson was involved, and would be the perfect person to leave behind. But he kidnaps and kills her, cause how tragic would that be, right?

Agreed. The party scene ruined the momentum and looking back, was clearly just a chance for final conversations with characters you weren't going to see again. Even then there was no option to say "By the way there's going to be a huge storm tomorrow, get out of town or stay somewhere safe" (And if they believe you or not is based on your previous interactions).
Because the storm was mostly forgotten until it becomes the focus of Episode 5. Even though there's little evidence about its origin, strength, etc.

Jefferson being a time lord as well could have been a cool twist and would have explained him popping up. He is such an underwhelming villain in general because they didn't dedicate him to one route. Just giving him a 180 during his reveal and then making him more funny than threatening. The random yelling, the busts of profanity, playing a song about being crazy.

We know from early concept scraps that a Nathan/Chloe confrontation at the party had been considered, but that would have only made things worse, if anything. Because then it would have been a "What the fuck were you thinking?" scene through-and-through, the failstate forcing you to undo and avoid it all and just making it feel even more stupid.

They should have made us hassle through the crowds and conversations hectically and nervously, making us think we really are short on time, and only then have given us the breather that Nathan isn't there - the following ramping-up of drama would have been all the more emotionally impacting for it.

By the time we were in the junkyard, my excitement had just completely worn down between the failure of the drawn-out Vortex sequence and the contrivedness of the plot as well as the questionable general narrative direction.

Probably the most interesting point, because it critiques the core themes they were trying to portray in addition to the more technical details.

They kept going on about how using the power and changing the past is bad/has unforseen negative consequences, yet the last choice is whether to use her powers again, with no clue (unless Max can stretch her head out the fourth wall and read the 'sacrifice' prompt) that doing so will actually solve anything and wont make things worse.

You could write an alternate ending from Sacrifice Chloe, where the storm's still going/has gotten bigger, everyone's dead, and Max finds herself tied up in Jefferson's rape dungeon. And it would fit better, both thematically and logically, than the 'actual' ending.

In addition to the storm still coming, because Max used her powers before saving Chloe, I was thinking more about characters:
Max, Joyce, and David are done. I cannot see them surviving losing Chloe like that. Especially Max with the fear anything she does/says could be wrong and cause another disaster. Kate was still a victim and could still be bullied onto the roof. Nobody taught Victoria a lesson so she could easily just continue being the way she was.
And if we're led to believe the Presoctts control the Police/ town, they could easily get Nathan off the hook. Blame all the Dark Room stuff on Jefferson, bring up the fact Chloe was in the bathroom to blackmail Nathan and spin it that Nathan defended himself (Even if he had a weapon on school property). Plus the insanity defense, which numerous doctors have already stated Nathan is mentally ill. With that Nathan is still under his father's influence.

Nobody other than the mostly unknown, or unnamed, characters benefit from that ending. And even during the storm that comes with the Sacrifice Arcadia Bay Ending, it's already been said how they could have survived.
But why is it Max's responsibility to take the blame for a storm that could easily come in every timeline or just happen naturally?

Jefferson's a criminally incompetent toon villain that the LiSverse goes unrealistically, comically out of its way to ensure gets his way, what else is new.

Granted, suspension of disbelief worked well for most of that, especially given how vague it all is kept, and I never thought his arriving in the junkyard was particularly sore a thumb (but I absolutely agree him taking Victoria is, on more than one level), I could have even forgiven them most if not all of that... had they not turned his character into what they did in the Dark Room. That let-down of a portrayal of what could have been and seemed promising to be an intriguing, genuinely unsettling experience of a sociopath into a clown/disney/bondvillain/memepsycho mixture instead just makes you want to hate him as a piece of writing and seek out all those weaknesses in the story involving him.

Well, the game has/had been praised to high heaven. And the first couple of episodes even seemed to justify all of that. Until it fell apart, that is. (But I liked the game well enough, so it doesn't matter too much to me. Just, looking back at it now, seems odd. Perfect scores? Come on.)

No, not really. And it's a bit of a shame, because I would have LIKED to game to move me more. That's why I was so disappointed at the end.

In real life, I have liked girls similar to Chloe, that is, tomboyish punkrockers. But for some reason the character in the game does nothing for me. Or Max. Not sure why. (And I think the fact that Max seems really concerned about everything and everyone, makes it the most sensical choice for her to try to save the town, and not even her supposed best friend.)
