You choose stat growth per lvl upon character creation, choosing between a power, magic, sense, or charm character and you can craft mods onto equipment, run dungeons, drill for treasure, etc.. Wildstar is good but it's dead.
LOTRO is pretty much vanilla WoW (speaking of which Nostalrus soon, so that's WoW for free too) but their pay system is abhorrent.
DFO is fun if you want something different.
DCUO is fun to play around with for awhile - The endgame is kind of retarded, but flying around the city with grappling hooks or super speed is awesome, I log in just for that sometimes.
If you like Diablo Path of Exile is sweet. I only stopped playing because my friend kept crashing in it.
TESO...Is pretty good now too. Not sure how alive it is (probably pretty alive since it's a franchise game) but if you can get over GOODBYE BEDROLL it's I guess improved a lot. It's no elder scrolls game, but they try hard enough. I like the crafting but I might be alone there.

If you're not lvl 80+ on official servers it's probably better to just play the private server since at least leveling is relatively painless. You have unlimited graces for rezzing when dying, and exp gain is like 10x of normal rate. They also do giveaways on weekends. Last 2 weeks they were giving away lubber and +10-15 enhance boxes.

Did you see the last update? There was a discussion somewhere that said that farming stasis 1 is faster than stasis 20.
No one will ever do stasis 20 anymore when looking for a drop item because it's too slow and more risky.
Stasis 1 is easymode where monsters have 20% less attack and 50% less health. The only downside is you get less exp and drops, 30% less.
But stasis 20 increases damage and health by a lot. It takes longer to kill enemies, they hit harder but they give more exp but it isn't worth it because it's just too hard, even with 6 people.

Pretty much every older gamer disagrees, voiced player characters in a game where you make your own character is a deal breaker. At that point it's no longer your character as everything you want to do is heavily restricted and you might as well just be playing a character with an actual backstory where voiced protags make sense.
Although i do agree the way TSW does things in general is odd, it's a fun game but has many bad design decisions. I personally enjoyed the NPC storytelling, but that's really all it is, storytelling to try and make a more interesting quest delivery system then a text pop up box that you click accept on (which you ironically still do anyhow). I consider it a problem with any MMO that wants to have a chosen one set story path, which is probably one of the stupidest trends in MMOs imo.

Osamosdas' Powder, used to heal pets and mounts. The previous recipe was a bucket of water and a level 10 plant resource. Which means you can put the thing in your haven bag and farm it there.
Now it uses a crafted materials from fishing. You need 2 different kind of fish, 5 of each so 10 and you have to craft them together. You can't put a fishing spot in your haven bag so you actually have to go to a nation with a fishing spot and run around because those spots get depleted.
There's a crap ton more that was changed like basic planks now need a 2nd resource, and same with certain ingredients.

Do Ghost Palace for your Thanatos Weapon. It's a daily thing and it'll take 2-3 days.
Then do the airship. What you want is Ferlock's stuff but the blue ones will work. Again, daily thing so might take a while.
Once you run out of dailies you can do the quest for Splendide Coins.

Forgot to mention, the coins is so you can get stat gloves.
And buying the faceworm skins might not be a good idea early on because you get a set effect from the airship equipment. So ignore it until you get a good one.
Also this is a base build. Sometimes you might want to skip the faceworm skin altogether and get a Nidhoggur cape instead for example. But since you're a rebel it won't work.

Arcanist: Sacrifices all forms of AoE damage that the mage can put out in exchange for extreamly powerful "Sniper-Like" single target attacks.
Hunter can become:
Rogue: Generic shadow-stepping, stealth using dagger user.
Druid: Staff and magic user that can grant heal over time effects and snare enemies in vines.
Beastmaster: The hunter gets a pet of their choice from the wild and is able to use them to knock down and attack enemies.
The priest can become:
Priest of [Healing god's name]: The only class that grants instant heals. Also the only class that has an AoE heal. Uses a basic light blast to damage foes.
Priest of [Warrior god's name]: Grants huge damage output buffs to a group. Uses fire magic to damage foes.
Priest of [Tits and Wine god's name]: Basically a bard. Uses a musical instrument of their choice to buff allies. Can also make gold by playing it in the street.

Want to craft stuff? Plenty of need for furniture to be made by you to put in player homes.
Want to delve into some dungeons? Pretty sure those caves over by [Fantasy Town's name] are haunted. Go kill the lich there.
Board and card games in the inns, world bosses roaming the world randomly, and PvP in the arenas.
Hell, if you wanted to, you could just spend all day mining/harvesting/killing beasts to get mats for furniture crafters.
Can also come across books like in ESO that tell stories from whatever area you're in.
The main reasons for monster hunting would be for cosmetic-only gear. For example, the Lich could have a small chance to drop necromancer robes.

Here's the catch: There are no quests. There is no gear. There is no leveling. No progression what so ever other than finding the sub-class tutor you want.
NPCs can give you the locations for dungeons and rare loot, but there are no quests. You can, however, talk to the heads of towns/cities and get bounties to go kill things like giants and dragons. (Which would also have a rare chance to drop something cosmetic.)
Gear loot is cosmetic only, progression is just what you own in the world. How fancy your player home or outfit is is what shows your progression.
