Competent brawler with a pretty entertaining game system and a very enjoyable cast. Game is also packed to the brim with stuff to do, giving it a pretty long life after finishing the storyline.

The story follows the kind of plot beats to be expected from your standard shonen story: well meaning protagonist that is somewhat of an airhead, preppy hot headed partner, an academy filled with dark secrets and adventure and so on. However, the execution, excellent voice acting and clever writing makes for a package that is better than the sum of its parts.

This is just a guess, but Akiba's Beat feels like they tried to make a 'lower budget' spin off to help fund the next main game. Beat has a bunch of downgrades compared to Trip, like unnamed NPCs are just blue or pink colored 3D models, less sense of exploration, and they don't use actual brands like in Trip.

Also, it feels like they try to copy what's popular to try to sell the game. Literal Tales gameplay, sense of progression that feels kinda like a Persona game etc.

All those makes me think that yeah, they tried to make something less budget heavy but incorporated popular things to try to sell it to help fund the next main game.

Despite all that, though, I personally quite enjoyed the game, so yeah, I feel like it's a shame that the game will definitely flop hard. Heck, personally I kinda enjoyed it more than Trip 2, though Trip 2 still holds a special place for its sheer uniqueness.

So apparently they just bitcrushed the HD sprites on Vita, and it results in a bit of slowdown and jaggy sprites. At least the game runs pretty well most of the time, but even in the first area with a little bit more stuff on the screen I noticed some slowdown.
