Squigly's a tricky character to learn, so you'll want to spend a lot of time getting used to her Seria Cancels and movement.
I forget what good Squig/Fukua players are out there, but I know there are some.
You tend to see Squig paired up with characters that have chunky assists like Big Band and Double.

But the general rule of thumb is, if you enjoy playing the characters on your team, you can make it work.

All it takes for me to get into a fighter is finding the character for me, and I know that's Squiggly (favorite design, will get used to her canceling and movement in time), Problem is that single characters don't look viable (based on what I've seen on streams) and for one reason or another I don't care too much for the rest of the cast. I'm considering Filia to go with the rival theme but rushdown is not my specialty. Maybe I'll throw a Fukua in there for the third spot.

Solos are viable, but at high level you have to be a character expert. They have the most explosive comeback potential in the game, so Solo players have to be good at capitalizing on every little moment they can find. One Happy Birthday on your opponent and the odds swing heavily in the Solo's favor.

Solo Squigly is a tough road though ,because it's hard for her to take advantage of her best tools. I think she, Valentine, and now maybe Robo, are some of the most team oriented characters.

Still, you'll see some pretty sick Squigly comebacks where she might as well have been Solo. This year's Combo Breaker was infamous for all of the strong Squigly play.

well the 90% that struggled is probably still only from the 30% of people that both beat the boss aaand cared to learn about the secrets in the first place.

so point being, of the people that played the prototype, 30% shouldn't have been very surprised that the extra challenge was going to be challenging, while the other 70% don't really care and will probably just watch someone else play through the hard parts on youtube.

it seems like a lot of people had fun in the prototype. I saw some people streaming the prototype that could barely beat the first boss but they still enjoyed it.

then on their 10th try they would finally beat the boss and get excited and happy and they'd finish the prototype without caring about a secret boss at all.

so you can still have fun with a game even if you can't do everything in it, it's only when the game requires you to do the hardest stuff (for a "good" ending or whatever) when it starts to become bs.
but most of the time those extra challenges are just for easter eggs and bragging rights, and the prototype pit is the same way.

so I would prefer labzero left some hard challenges in their game for that purpose. to make some of us itch to find out where the secret mega cat boss might be hiding.
as long as it's not required to beat the game, I don't think the majority of players are really going to care.

I'm new to Skullgirls and confused. I have the Skullgirls Encore but I downloaded a free update, beowulf, robo fortune, eliza (when they were all free). It says on the title screen "Skullgirls 2nd Encore" but when I go on the PSN store and I go on Skullgirls 2nd Encore it doesn't say it's the one I purchased. Skullgirls Encore is the one I apparently got. So which version do I have? Does downloading Beowulf and the others mean I have 2nd Encore?

I don't think it's that confusing. It's just that people aren't used to a fighting game getting a free balance update on every platform years after its release. Usually you have to buy Vanilla and then buy Super.

The extra singleplayer stuff is only treated as a seperate package on PC. Otherwise you're either on PS4/Vita and already got it or you're on PS3/360 and can't get it anyway.

I don't think Replays are really an official feature on PC either lol, To my knowledge Mike just put them in because he could, and they kinda mostly work, but he can't afford time to fully bugtest them. Are they even planned for consoles at all?

Sony Crossplay is definitely a thing they're doing but it might be waiting on the Lobby patch for people to actually group up. Crossplay with PC won't possible though, unfortunately, because Autumn/LabZero can't afford servers.

I live in the majestic region of New Jersey.

I'm pretty new to fighting games in general so I don't think I'll be able to even challenge you guys. But I at least want to learn.

This is the only Cerebella combo I know and I noticed other players of the character don't use this so it's probably outdated:
c. lk, c. mp, c.hp, j. lk, mp, c. lk, c.hk, DP, dynamic dynamo

I do not have a neutral game and desperately try to get that lk. I get combo'd for 10 minutes straight everytime a character touches me and it's near impossible to not get combo'd right after it ends.

I am a rank B Hugo in USF4 and that's pretty much it. Nice to meet you. I look forward to fighting the Skullgirls experts ITT. Mike Z doesn't like Guilty Gear Xrd. Christine Marie Cabanos is not on top of me.

I am a Cerebella main, and she was my first character just like you.
The last combo is the "normal" combo, and it doesn't really matter if it's 100% optimal. Optimal combos are cool but if you drop them then there's no point. The last one is very easy, even for a beginner, and it gets you familiar with most of Cerebella's chains (magic series? fuck FG terminology lol).

When I started out it took me forever to learn the first combo because I'm retarded but once I got it down it made learning the rest of Bella's stuff a lot easier.

If you want I could show an optimal combo versus the last one to show that it isn't much of a difference.

Yup, that's still a good universal BnB. Not really sure if it's the most optimal damage you can get, you might be able to squeeze a little more out with runstop shenanigans, but I see people use this one a lot. It's simple, easy, universal, and has a bunch of good reset points, which is really what matters most.

Bella hasn't changed all that much, and Mike usually doesn't break combos unless there's a good reason for it. He also doesn't like to mess with his waifu.

Btw are you guys SF players too? I'm not dissing Skullgirls when I say this, but it seems really mashy and too frantic. Street Fighter feels really precise (I can jump over every individual fireball, I can see every overhead coming and react to it, position myself perfectly, know everything that's happening on screen) but Skullgirls feels kinda like Marvel where it's one-touch into a 10 minute long combo.

The moves are too fast to react to, and each round feels like whoever touches his enemy first wins the whole thing as long as he memorized a long combo. Or this might be just because I'm new to SG.

SG's combos aren't that long compared to Marvel or most 'anime' games, undizzy puts a hard limit on them. However SG has a very high emphasis on sustained pressure via resets. Defending against it all is hard and it'll take time to get the hang of.

I dabble in 3S on the side, not very good at it though. Even though I'm plenty used to SG's defense, I never know what to do after I get knocked down there, and parrying anything more than a fullscreen fireball is beyond me (let alone successfully punishing if I do parry something). I choke a lot trying to keep up pressure on offense too.

I love love love Virt, but I don't really think his style is a good fit for Indivisible. Most of his stuff feels very energetic, which could make for some good battle themes, but Indivisible seems to be shooting for a calmer and more serious atmosphere that would call for more ambient overworld/dungeon tracks. And IMO he's at his best when he does chiptunes, I want him to keep working on retro-styled projects for that.

Hiroki Kikuta's great, and I think what we've heard so far fits the game's atmosphere so well.

Combos in SG are definitely longer than SF, and the action is more frantic, but in an even ratio you can't get killed in one touch. It's inspired by Marvel, but in games like UMvC3 you actually can legit get killed in one touch.

What will really blow you up in Skullgirls though are the resets, which you have to learn to be ready for.
This is the same stuff that kills people in SF too (see- Mika, Laura, Urien, etc.), but thankfully in SG there's no Dizzy Stun, and you can take advantage of things like chicken-blocking, Assists, PBGC, etc. to deal with pressure. The more you get used to the mechanics, the more opportunities you'll find.

Also when you fight better players online, pay attention to what things they do to counter you. That's how I discovered how good Reversal Supers are.

Another reason Kikuta is good for Indivisible is that the man hasn't done a full score for a game like this in a number of years.
It's a real shame since SoM and SD3 are some of the most celebrated RPGs ever made and the OSTs have gotten countless remixes at this point.
Yet over the years his name never got the same notoriety as his contemporaries like Uematsu, Mitsuda, Kondo, etc.

So while Yamane was coming fresh off of her Castlevania work for SG and feelin fine, Kikuta hasn't had quite the same spotlight and has probably been thirsty to score another epic.
I think he's really going to make the most of this opportunity, try his best to impress, and put some good energy into the soundtrack.

I'm so scared that Indivisible will fail.

Not that the game will be bad. I know the game is going to be amazing. But I'm afraid that it's not going to appeal to anyone other than those who have already backed it. It has weird combat and while the art is gorgeous, it doesn't appeal to a big enough crowd. It'll be considered a niche game that RPG fans as a whole mostly ignore due to the radically different combat system that not many other games use and Lab Zero will be forced to crowdfund their next game, which will be really, really bad for their image despite the amazing quality of their products.

I'm just so worried. Everything's going to be alright, right?

I don't think Indivisible is going to blow up like Undertale did, but there is still a strong potential audience for the game.
In particular, RPG fans that aren't satisfied with modern FFs/DQs, but also had issues with throwback titles like Exist Archive, I am Setsuna, Ni No Kuni, or Bravely Default, might end up finding themselves latching on to this game.

It's one of the few new retro-inspired RPGs on the horizon that's trying to take its production value seriously, and attempt to innovate on classic systems like ATB to avoid some of the pitfalls of older games,

The combat isn't that radically different either. There are a lot of classic RPGs that the combat makes callbacks to other than VP, like MarioRPG/Paper Mario, classic Tales games, Xenogears, CT, and Legaia. From what I've seen, fans of older RPGs are noticing that, and if LZ can make the game shine more with each new update, then a bunch of these people will definitely be showing up to play on release day.

The only thing that I think might cause a big stir is if Indiv and Bloodstained actually end up releasing around the same time in 2018. I'd really hate for those games to be unjustly compared to each other.

I think there's a pretty large audience of people who will buy and enjoy the game once it's out and they hear it's good, but won't spend a dime on crowdfunding after seeing too many other projects either fail to deliver or turn out to suck. I'm normally one of them, but I made an exception here because I trust L0 and they put out a prototype to prove they have something good on their hands.

Look at Shovel Knight. They had a fairly modest Kickstarter that brought in a little over $300k, but then when the game came out and people started raving about how good it was sales just exploded.

Start with ground chains and learn the timing of them. Repeat them until you get them right. If you need a handicap, I suggest using a character with multi-hitting attacks such as Valentine.

Don't mash the buttons. Try to get the attacks you're trying to do out instead of just pressing the buttons as fast as you can.

You can incorporate launchers after. The timing on air chains is the same to the ground ones.
Good starter characters are Filia and Cerebella. Cerebella has pretty much every motion you'll see in fighting games except moon motions so I'd recommend her for now.

In addition to everyone's advice, make sure you do the Tutorials too. Do them multiple times if you have to. There are some hard ones in there, but getting through them all will mark your dedication and ability to focus (good for any fighting game). You'll also get a small taste of most of the mechanics you'll need to understand, save for a few very advanced ones.

If you go on online Quick Match, you'll get bodied, but keep in mind that a ton of the SG playerbase are newbies to the genre that got good just by sticking to it (you can see a lot of their diaries and progression on the Skullheart forums). Parasoul's actually pretty popular. She tends to be a favorite for people outside the fanbase (She was the first pick for Yipes and Alex Valle when they played) and she gets a bunch of cosplay.

Filia I kind of agree with though, but living monster hair has a lot of potential and there were some flashier move concepts for her that never got made. I think her being the first character they worked on with the roughest workflow diluted some of her potential flair in the game. She has the most basic backstory on the surface, being amnesiac and all.

Hey Anon, in case you're still looking for suggestions, Squig/Bella is a pretty good team. It's the team I played when I started.
They're good characters together, but my advice is you'll want to make sure you have a good Squig that can stand on her own too.

I've seen some pros do Squig on point with Excellabella Assist, similar to how teams will use Big Band's A-Train Assist.
The strategy is for more specific setups than running Copter/LocknLoad Assist, but seems to work really well for Squigly.

Thinking about it, this might actually be a real option they're exploring. Ignoring mouth movements and particle effects, each of the cutscenes in those examples used only about 30 unique frames of animation or less.

Peter said that they contracted 3 minutes of animation from Trigger, so in terms of frames, the budget for each minute could be worth 10-20 cutscenes at a similar animation quality to those videos.

So they could possibly have Trigger work on a 2 minute opening at full studio quality, and then put the remaining budget towards smaller, simpler cutscenes to fill out the rest of the game.
They would just need Titmouse to storyboard those frames as tightly and on-model as possible, and then have other artist contractors handle things like lip flaps, FX, and maybe some BGs after they got the finished art from Trigger,

Of course, not sure if they'll actually do that or not, but it just seemed more plausible once I started to break it down.

Thanks for the update anon. Glad it got fixed.
It must have to do with how BackerKit manages tiers. LZ probably couldn't give it tier options that were exclusive to certain people, so the bonus shirt was either available to everyone as an upgrade or it wasn't. Either that or upgrading just resets your pledge data from BackerKit's end so it can't track the original pledge. Who knows.

Maybe BackerKit can patch the feature in if more people bring it up. I'll just have to keep that in mind if I get enough to upgrade.

Wow, this pretty much confirms Bloodstained will probably drop it too. If both Shantae and the N64 throwback game don't think Wii U is worth it anymore, then that's a clear sign.

For Bloodstained you mean? Yeah, the PR guy Ben Judd already said that working on the WiiU version right now would be at the cost of working on a Switch version, which for them is basically throwing money away.

It basically is an action platformer, it just has a layer of RPG combat underneath it.
And the shifting enemy behaviors and team synergy could encourage some interesting combat strategies that you don't get in typical Metroidvanias, especially for minor encounters.

Build a team for burst damage that tears through lesser enemies faster but might struggle in longer fights? (in Prototype terms, this would be like Ajna with 3 Tungars)
Build a team with good meter gain that keeps Ajna alive in harder dungeons? (Ajna, 2 Zebeis and a Razmi)
Build a team that's good at juggling certain enemies off the battlefield and ending some matchups prematurely? (Ajna, 2 Zebeis, and a Tungar)
etc.

The mechanics bring a lot of potential ideas to the table.

Personally I always felt like the Wii was a step backwards from the GC, but the motion controls helped it sell like hotcakes.

GC had a really underrated lineup, probably just overshadowed by how huge the PS2's collection was by comparison.

I play Skullgirls with my friend and he almost always grabs me and gets me into a 40-50 hit combo every time.

It also doesn't help that she doesn't have a wake-up animation so she pretty much blinks onto me and gets the grab. If I try jabbing or doing any kind of punch to hit her, she just grabs me out of it.

Don't get too worked up on hit count, especially against Valentine who can do like 14 Hits in 3 moves (which scales the damage on her combos to shit). Keep an eye on your health bar and focus on watching the damage.

If you're getting grabbed a lot, try neutral jumping a little more when you sniff the approach. You might also need to watch the spacing on your pokes and try to keep her at arms length. Reversals are good options too, especially as Assists.

The characters you listed are either zoners or have great reach, so she should be working a little harder to get in on you like that.

The types of moves that a character has are really the things that most define their archetype in SG.
I think it's a little hard to pin down everyone, because a characters' strategy can change a lot depending on team setup.

Like on her own Squigly is a very poke/mixup focused sorta character, but with someone like Cerebella or Big Band behind her, she can become like this beastly damaging wall of options.
Beowulf is a grappler, but as an Assist can become useful for zoning. Robo's Assists can almost turn any point character into a zoner.
Solo Peacock can even be a half-decent rushdown with her oppressive chip damage and ability to kill with fewer combos.
That kinda thing.

It might be more helpful to point you towards players of certain characters, depending on what kind of knowledge you're looking for.
I really recommend watching some vids from Combo Breaker 2016, which was the biggest SG event this year.

It would seem forced if all of these different ethnicities with their different cultures lived in one place from the beginning, but as a gradually growing travelling group it makes more sense than a more internally similar cast.
