Okay, so. The sad reality of Dies is that most of the discourse surrounding it is mostly revolved around how difficult it is to read and how hard it'd be to translate. Nobody really knows what its actually about.
To be honest, those who are just expecting Fate or something will probably be disappointed. The games plot is basically outright parody of chuu2 battle royal stories. It's fights and embracing of chuu2 tropes are mostly used as a way to discuss how we approach the rather warped method of storytelling, and how we interact with fiction as a whole. It embraces every cliche that one would expect out of a battle royal in order to make a statement about them, for better or worse, and why they are both silly and boring, and why they can be great.
People who are familiar with the philosophy of Nietzsche and Goethe Faust will probably get the most out of Dies, though, as the story's biggest themes emanate from those 2 sources. It's a story in large part about the human dream of being more than what they are, and the life we leave behind in pursuit of it. Mentioning any more would be a spoiler, though, and this is mostly just my interpretation of it, so take it as you will.
In large part, while I do think the ultimate setting and characters of the story are both pretty cool (and fantastic for the latter), it's not something to go in for looking just for chuu2 explosions. How the plot is presented and told is honestly more intriguing than the plot itself. It's much more "literary" in nature than what most people are expecting.
Either way, I hope people like it. It's definitely one of my favorites, for sure. I haven't done the AmaAme extra stuff yet, so this might be a good time to!

It actually has weaker launch numbers than either, sadly.
Himawari's peak has so far reached 25 players.
Fata Morgana's was 31.
Tokyo Babel was 39.
Those are just peak players, but it's usually a decent indication of how well the title sold on launch. Himawari is more-or-less matching Fata in its first week in the popularity rankings on MG's website. So if it's doing worse, than it probably isn't by much. But it very likely isn't doing better.
However, even though Tokyo Babel had higher launch numbers than either of Fata or Himawari, it was, in the long run, a lot less successful, and it only received a lot of additional sales figures when it put it half off. Fata has been consistently gaining sales at a relatively decent basis and has maintained a sales gap of 2000-3000. While Steamspy isn't reliable, it does give you a decent idea of where the sales might be around... Tokyo Babel, however, is quite all over the place. I saw it as low as 800 before the sales.
I think Himawari will probably see similar sales figures to Fata based on the current trends, so long as it's well received and worth-of-mouth spreads about it. It has a more accessible art-style (though, in my opinion, the original Doujin designs looked better) and the tone is more carefree.

Tokyo Babel offers a good story and top voice actors, even with its cons. Lilith -Sawashiro-, Raziel -Hanazawa-, Setsuna -Kamiya- are big voice actors. And the rest did a good job.
It has its problems, like it doesn't take itself seriously yet it ends up being serious stuff except for those few joke scenes. So if you expect one thing or the other it'll shortcircuit your brain. All the romantic part is also all ages, and the main character is dull as fuck. Now that I reflect about it, it wasn't that good.

So I'm nearing the end of Himawari and I don't think I've ever read a work that manages to bring characters to life quite like this. The writing is good in the way that it seamlessly tells the story in a way that bounds everything together in a way that makes perfect sense, the flashbacks and the way the characters act all have a meaning behind them.
That being said, I think most people will find this to be a dull experience. It was an interesting ride, but not particularly exciting. If you can't appreciate the effort the writer put into characterization you will probably not even finish Himawari (not even exaggarting here, it's definitely not for everyone), while I did love these aspects of the VN it was unfortunately not enough for me to give it a higher vote than 7.5.
To give some context, one of my least favorite characters ended up becoming one of my favorites after learning his ambitions. His was probably the most tragic fate, even if he was basically Kinzo 2.0.

Ok after a little thinking I decided to bump the score up to 8. Reason being that I'd already seen some of the darker themes in this VN in other reads, making them less impactful. Makes me appreciate Himawari alot more to be honest, sad that I didn't get to read this earlier. I imagine that if I was a jap reading this as a doujin release back in 2006 and not expecting much I'd love it that much more.

I'm quite sure this is the case. They actually approached numerous companies about localizing Maitetsu and they were turned down by all of them except for Sekai. This is likely because they probably gave strict guidelines for a Western release, ie a blanket removal on all the loli material. Maitetsu doesn't even have that much lolicon pandering in comparison to Monobeno. You can cut out those scenes and not lose too much, whereas in Monobeno it's like the whole game.

He's right. Localizing Monobeno officially would be a disaster for every company involved. Monobeno isn't like other titles with lolis in them, where they're ambiguous about the ages, the characters talk, look, and act young. In the game there are some indirect references to Natsuha's age, like Tooru say she's not in her 反抗期 (rebellious phase) yet. What age this rebellious phase starts at? And all that aside, main plot essentially starts by Natsuha's first period. How do you spin that? How do you spin the scene from her perspective that leave no doubts with portrayal of her childish thoughts and childish usage of Japanese?
Technically lolicon isn't (federally) illegal in the US anyway. The problem is that it's in a gray zone, and if any government agency tries to target people for it for whatever reason, they can probably easily convince a jury that it fails the Miller test.
In general most companies are just too scared about loli. It's way easier to just go with something that's easy to handwave like 1000 year old vampires or teenage girls with unmentioned ages (since most VN heroines in general are more accurately 15-18, not 18 and over). Monobeno carries a lot of risk because everyone is scared. I mean, even if MG did get the license, they distribute out of Japan, so if they were to come up with some disclaimer about checking your own country's laws before purchasing they'd probably be as legally safe as they're gonna get. I mean, you could probably import Monobeno or grab it digitally right now without little worry about being pinched for CP. But that certainly isn't enough for anyone to try to take on that risk.
Monobeno is especially a hard sell since it's actually a plotge. I can't imagine going through all the trouble as a publisher to make sure you don't get FBI'd just to get a few hundred or thousand sales off of a game about having sex with children. There are way more marketable titles out there.

The story is quite shit because it's not really connected, you lose the entire appeal of the Taimanins getting raped and broken, because after each game everything sets back to normal and its like the long-lasting consequences of the first game are all gone.
That being said, I'd reccomend that you do it in order, though that's mainly because of nostalgia reasons for me. Taimanin Asagi was one of the first nukige I played, hell it was probably one of the first visual novels I've ever played, and it left a long lasting impression on me. Playing Taimanin Asagi was probably one of the main factors that got me interested in the medium of visual novels today. I also thought that each of the Taimanin games got increasingly more hotter in terms of art, scene-setup, as you go from TA1 to TA2 to TA3, so I think if you end up playing TA3, going back to play TA1 will end up being disappointing.
