Does anyone else think the orb run is far more dangerous than people give it credit for?

I was ascending the other day and I had to pass through a completely open dungeon level where the only 3 staircases up were on the opposite side, all next to each other.

I'd have been completely fucked if a panlord or level 1 demon got summoned there. Ice fiends, in particular, can torment and hit like a truck.

Orb run is pretty benign most of the time, but I feel is the most dangerous part of the game once you get past early game.

Especially if you get some bullshit like a panlord who summons those eyes than can paralyze you without a MR check.

Xom's the best. Pakellas lets you use rods and wands for once. Hep's pretty interesting.Nem gives you a lot of offense and support and the semi-random draws keep it fresh. You can go yred and have a deep troll shaman hasting and mighting your dudes. Playing tower defense with the mushroom AoE's, walking mushrooms, spores, and oklob batteries is pretty tight now that fruit stacks. I don't think you can zin which is a shame cause recite is dope.

What I typically do is I get my weapon to 0.8 delay, then turn on all of the defenses at once (so Fighting, Dodging, and Armour, and Shields if I'm a Long Blades user). This part isn't optimal but I'm lazy and regardless of what people say it'll still work, but you'll probably do better if you level them up one at a time.

That continues until I get a better weapon, so if that happens I turn defenses off and turn the weapon back on until it's at 0.8, then back to defenses. If I have a good that requires Invocations I just turn that on regardless of what else I'm training until it's level 10, then I turn it off and forget about it unless one of the abilities scales really heavily with Invocations.

Once the new weapon is at 0.8, it's back to defenses until Orc, which I use the XP from to get to mindelay if possible. If it isn't, I just keep the weapon on until it's at mindelay. After that, I level up Evocations to 10 or so, and then it's back to the defenses until they're maxed out or you're dead.

I'm sure people will reply to this saying it isn't optimal but really it's good enough if you don't want to micromanage your skills. This will work for any tabber. Playing a mage is similar except you want to just get a basic melee weapon to a decent apt and then focus on magic instead.

It depends based on the character you're playing and what items you find.

I'll assume you're playing a tabber.

Good gods are ones that have powerful passive effects, like Makhleb's healing on kills or Xom's mutations, or with powerful and simple active effects like Trog's Hand or any of Oka's abilities. Every god is viable for a tabber except for Veh, Sif, and Kiku, and you'll have to experiment to figure out what they do and what the best way to use each of them is.

If a weapon deals more damage than the one you're using, it's better. Skills aren't an issue, there's more than enough XP in DCSS to get proficient with anything you want to get proficient with. Very, very generally speaking, a +3 bonus is equivalent to 1 additional base damage, and a damage-dealing brand like Flaming or Freezing is worth like 1 additional base damage too.

For rings, wear resists if you don't have anything better, but slaying, protection/evasion, dex, and str are usually the ones you'll want as a tabber. Of these straight dex and str are the least useful as you'll need a significant skill investment to get the most out of them. Again, generally speaking, you can just add up all your defenses and use whatever gives you the highest total value. You want to have high EV and AC if you can, so go for what gives you a balance if the difference is only a few points.

There's oberon down. It helped that his first action was to summon a zephyr lord I could enslave.

Late game mage is approximately zero fun compared to tabbers, but I don't think I have enough damage to kill the serpent and a lot of the awful uniques are still out there.

That just seems like unnecessary danger, you can easily Vaults:5 with Okawaru. Heroism + Finesse + Vampiric weapon shreds everything in there.

If you don't have a vamp weapon, all that means is that you'll need to teleport a few times and rest up once you have there's too much heat on you.

In which case:
MPA is largely convenience tweaks.
elli is the successor of mpa and continues convenience patching, as well as some tweaks to some of PCB's stranger mechanics, as well as some work on the no wilderness mode.
Pseudo is basically elli with a few tweaks, reversions, additions, and some stuff from PCBR.
PCBR is more focused on implementations like new game modes, races, items, and classes. It had some good UI tweaks and whatnot, but most of those were pulled into pseudo. Although apparently he has rebased his changes over pseudo, which means it has most of the convenience stuff from the above three and some new content.

No formal changelogs that I can think of though.

I just very much prefer learning magic at end with lot of characters, and Ashenzari is wonderful for enabling them via boosted aptitudes and exp transfer. Plus passive abilities are nifty, too.

Petrify takes too long for the target to turn into stone. This is why you have room to act whenever a basilisk lands a lucky petrify on you in Lair. As for summons, only a canine familiar is the best candidate but it always spawns right next to you. It'll need a couple of turns to make a good distance before you can paralyze+shadow step on it but I guess if you only need a couple of tiles of distance from your enemy, it will work most of the time as long as the dog isn't killed and the /paralysis goes through its MR1.

Also I don't understand what happens if you buy more proficiency in a magic realm. Even with 5 skillpoints you get capped at skilled for every spell except for the 40+ ones which is incredibly strong considering that most of them are really shitty for most books (Armageddon lets you have free rockets and life gives you free healing at level 25 something? Also Glyph of warding? I mean, man. Considering you get 10 slots every 5 levels and yeeks have a really really easy time getting to level 20 before even clearing stronghold, you've got an earlygame breaker there. You can cast easily and almost for free the workhorse spells. It's basically sorceror without the horrible drawbacks.
I suggest to drop the whole gloves encumbrance thing since (almost?) all hybrid classes don't have it and it's usually a prerogative for pure spellslingers. Maybe add it to the first level of "can cast in heavy armor). Oh by the way I don't understand what that did, is it a penalty for [heavy armor] like a monk/ sorceror? Does it raise the cap?
Also even if the drawbacks aren't that big, that red "Encumbrance" still triggers my autism something fierce.

I'm gonna try another for real without wizmode now.

Say I wanna grab the "boost my attacks" proficiency. It's the first level, costs 2 proficiency points. All works perfectly.
When I take the second level, which is supposed to cost 4 proficiency points, I only spend 2 points, but there's a cap that tells me I must have at least 4 proficiency points to buy it.
same goes for the third level. It says the cost is 8, but I only need to spend 3 PPs for it, while mantaining myself over the limit of 8 available PPs. It goes like this to the fifth. So I have to spend a total of 2+2+3+4+5= 16 PPs to boost my melee attacks to the max.

I needed +1 light to see it and minimum protection dice and resists are harder to get than +1 stealth.

Blew a lot of liquor in the midgame before I could stab. Blew a str,dex, and quick to kill a deathblade to stab with. Rest has been mostly getting good drops elsewhere instead of potions. Found like 7 disconnections so far.

It's because how tallying purchases works.
The purchases are saved in array, and when stats are calculated, it is checked for bonuses. It also calculates remaining proficiency points ( MAX - sum of purchases = remaining points ).
However, I had brainfart in this calculation and it used the base_cost rather than getting the dynamic cost ( probably because I initially was thinking about doing it differently.

It should be fixed. I am probably gonna adjust the costs a bit for everything...

I guess you can get the cryptid uniques, as well as perhaps a kitsune in Vikhor's sanctum. I am currently not wary of rare and OOD demons in the other sanctums with exception of some enemies an Anzu's sanctum, but they become a common sight a few floors later..

It's a piece of cake with MR+++ or better.

The only hard places in a 3 rune run are Spider:4, Shoals:4 and Vaults:5. Perhaps Orc:4, but you can usually tease them out a few at a time pretty easily.

I believe thats the OG wraith Ferret created. He's not too bad the 2 times I've fought him with orb. These new corpses are pretty gud but I feel they're a bit limiting since I think Ferret raised the cost of copying abilities so I've had to rely more on the rando abilities gotten from corpses. I know the lure upgrade can summon glitches, but can it summon relic wraiths even though they're not demons?
