Hmm... Many things. The story was a good turn from the usual RPG fare. However, the quest system... I never felt like quests mattered. They had no reason behind them but to level me and my adventurer's badge up. Even Neptunia has little optional quest descriptions to throw a little lore in there, and give the world and tasks purpose.

Second, the maps were positively diminutive. I'd trek 30+ days to find a cough of sand and a couple penguins. The world felt claustrophobic, and exploration felt unrewarding.

Third, I could exploit the shit out of money. I have a lot of patience, especially for games with "time". I farmed a LOT of pure water from my well, and abused the "Port Outfit" trick. By the time I was ready to level up my adventurer license, I could buy Platine from the blacksmith, give Mel a nigh-mid-game weapon, and have her one-shot almost everything. Combat became "defend, and have Mel kill everything".

And fourth, I got cuckolded. The parameters for recruiting Mimi and getting the Wagon fixed were rather specific, and I did not meet them. Instead, I went to Arland on foot and upgraded my license, and missed out on a lot that would have been rectified if the game had been a bit more clear on when something as vital as the wagon would have been fixed. The game just kept omitting vital details.

If you like platformers, have you ever heard of Umihara Kawase? It's a pretty neat game, where you play as a girl with a fishing line that works like a grappling hook, in sort of surreal but relaxing environments where you fight giant walking fish. It's pretty much a time attack game, but the cool thing about it is how you build your own paths through pretty much every level. It's a very freeing and unique game.

It's also hard as fuck.

Specifically thinking of 'novel settings and unique gameplay,' you may enjoy Black Rock Shooter on PSP. Great music, very interesting setting and interactive shooting game RPG battles that are unlike anything else. It's definitely a flawed game, but it's very cool. Here's a track of music:

You fail to recruit Mimi / fix wagon by going to Arland before you level up from Glass to Iron rank. It's a rather specific way to fail it, which I just happened to meet.

And no, I did not build any boats, and I only got to Bronze Rank before I lost interest. Honestly the game stressed me out. I kept wondering "could I have done better? What if I've missed an event? Was that an optimal use of my time?"

I just didn't find its formula enjoyable. It felt like I *actually* owned a small business, which is no fun at all unless your heart is in it.

The carriage fixing event requires you to be *about* to rank up. Technically the carriage can never be fixed.

Mimi you can't fail to recruit, but she gets angry at you if you leave for arland after meeting her in alanya, and then you have to walk to arland to re-recruit her (because you have no wagon).

The techniques required to progress through even the normal path in umihara kawase games are just too difficult for a regular person.

Stay away unless you've been playing this shit since you were a kid, otherwise it will frustrate you to no end.

It's really not that hard. The game teaches you pretty much everything you need in those 5 or so cute little cutscene tutorials between stages at the beginning.

The story mode was playable but not the best.
Raid mode ranged from okay to terrible.
The game has good sound direction but for the Vita port they compressed the shit out of the sound effects and all audio tracks (which they included like 5 to 7 different language audio tracks in for no good reason).

Would definitely recommend you play it on any other platform over Vita though. The game is pretty fun but the Vita port needed a few more patches to make it better. Shame since portable Raid mode would have been great had they all run at least okay.
