Oh hey, one of these exists.

I just started playing recently, so I may be retarded, but what exactly is the point of the SMG class? So far, up to gear score 163, I have seen no SMG that isn't essentially an AR with less damage, less RoF, a smaller magazine, half the range, half the accuracy, and half the stability, as well as no extra armour damage.

What exactly is supposed to be good about them? The crit damage boost seems like it could be useful were it plausible to get critical chance to a high percent, but then you could do the exact same critical chance fuckery with any other weapon. What gives? What do they exist for?

they used to be really good at release then they got nerfed pretty hard

Ballistic shield build. You obviously wont deal as much damage as a pure dps build, but you are gonna soak a lot of damage, can walk right up to their face and tear them a new one.

How do you stack crit chance to actually be an appreciable increase in damage? The highest SMG crit damage boost I've seen is 21%. The base stats would need to be at least that much higher to justify using one I think.

I heard about a specific armour set that lets you use the shield alongside an SMG, but I have to wonder what the point is. Most SMGs I'm finding are already outdamaged by my sidearms, though the fucked up way this game handles FPS seems to limit how fast I can shoot them, along with burst fire guns.

Point is to get the attention of npcs so they focus their fire on you, while your team can take them down easier. For all i know SMG had their time, and unless they have a use in pvp, which i know shit about, they are only useful as a secondari weapon if a enemy Rush you and you wanna send him to cover asap, but even then a shotgun would do the job better i think
