Honestly Pike&Shot would be better if the focus of the campaign would be on Easter, Southern and Northern Europe.
That region had way more diversity as far as armies are concerned.
You'd have Sweden as the typical Pike&Shot faction.
Poland which still has Pike&Shot but also a large variety of heavy and light cavalry.
Russia with hordes of muskets and heavy cavalry but poor heavy infantry.
Cossacks with powerful light cavalry and infantry.
Ottomans with hordes of cheap and light infantry but also extremely powerful Janissary units.
Austria with its German pike&shot armies supported by Balkan levies.

All while having a wild mix of weapons in service ranging from pikes, swords, two-handed axes, maces to muskets, pistols to bow&arrow.

It could even be done in an expansion system like warhammer, with the first one being set in Europe, focused on the 30 years war, second in an American theatre, focused on natives and colonisation with intercontinental trade sprinkled in if you have the first one, and have the third add in India and China and have whatever the fuck happened there as a focus, while improving on intercontinentality and I guess Russian expansion if you have the first one

Should be fun though. The Ostrogoths and the Iazyges and some other horde faction have been destroyed, I've made peace with the Huns, sanitation and food is handled across nearly all my provinces, and I've sent 3 armies to conquer the east. Now I should be able to fight a war without needing to remember to micromanage a bunch of bullshit every turn.

In general they are, yes.

All elves, Humans, Greenskins and the Skaven and THE KANGZ have balanced armies, bent in a few different directions of specialization.

Lizardmen, Beastmen and Ogres have options for most things but are very melee concentrated.

Vamps and Warriors of Chaos are the ones who have basically zero range. Vamps are the only ones with 100% no range at all.

Oh and the stunties don't have cav so they're static. Who fucking cares what stunties do or don't do though?

They're all fun but kinda different from Shogun 2 since unlike Shogun 2 there's quite a bit more unit variety between factions. For example in R2 the Romans have a completely different rosters than Carthage or the Gauls.
Shogun 2 is imho the prettiest looking TW game though. The overall colors and aesthetics are really nice.

If I had to recommend any TW game I'd say Attila, Napoleon or Warhammer.
If you don't mid graphics then you can give Medieval 2 a try.

The two wood elf factions are like Skarsnik/Vanilla Greenskins.
Each have some restrictions on one another's stuff. You can get every unit as either one, but as treemen you'll have less elven elites and as elves you have less trees etc.

for the elves, the units that cost amber are Treekin, Treemen, Forest Dragons and Warhawk Riders at least

No, Wild Riders are on a different unit size. When adjusted to be on the same size as everyone else they fall between Knights of the Realm and Knights of the Blazing Sun for HP.

In the tabletop Wild Riders were of a skill level on par with Chaos Knights for melee combat, stronger than mortal men/elves, and had special rules for the strength of their charge, doing three times the damage of knights of the realm on the attack. They are also as fast as any cavalry in the game, and faster than marauder cavalry.

But in total war their charge is worse than everyone's except for the drunken centigor, its pretty awful.

I think there are a couple of changes that would make it more fun, like making raiding a more viable way of maintaining your income, and making awakened tribes your vassals from the start, or better replenishment, or a sack & raze option like the beastmen have.

Generally, I think it would be good to make the chaos campaign less of an "attack a city every turn because your armies are swole" type of campaign, and more of a "raid the countryside and warp the landscape for the dark gods until you feel like crushing the enemy" kind of campaign. Sorta like the beastmen campaign, except instead of hiding your armies in the woods like a coward, you get by on your armies being tough and chaos attrition fucking your enemies up.

Magic isn't infinite though, and offensive spells are a lot worse than just having arty. I can barely even get to unleash a spell before an entire flank (mine or theirs) begins to buckle, so there's no point in using non-meme formations

Looking forward to when Warriors of Chaos will have the option of campaigning through the dark lands with chaos dwarfs fighting ogre kingdoms, greenskins, undead and dwarf armies or maybe being able to pit fight in an expanded chaos wastes, having diplomacy options with daemon factions, other warbands (fighting other horde, reducing them to half strength, then "subjugating" them through confederation) giving the WoC much needed support and sustainability on the campaign map to throughly get the tide of doom devouring the ,by then truly formidable roster of base game + expansion 1 + both dlc and fdlc, factions of the old world, ulthuan, naggaroth and lustria. all this going of the russian datamine as a guide stick, since they've obviously made changes since launch.

wouldn't it be neat if they used the outpost system of the Welfs to create point-of-interests type micro settlements that functions as power hubs to be captured by diffrent horde factions. Imagine greenskin hordes fighting over gathering grounds before waaagh-ing out, maybe that same location can be captured by an vampire count horde, being an ideal focal point for that sweet epic battle marker spawns, the horde can build then build a monument giving bonuses, maybe to raise dead cost, skill or other. Picture a campaign map littered with forts guarding chokes, brigdes and other that can basicly be conquered by anyone/appropriates, these maps feature more creative designes, maybe just as simple as a more challenging hill to siege, with faction holding appropriate assests around the epic location, being a beastmen, greenskins, undead or chaos or even other factions, held fortress ruin, a perticular mountain pass or bridge, a burial mound or great battlefield, maybe just small forest hideouts or villages, not being more than 3 or 4 small chokes on a just a fifth of a otherwise forestclad hillside overlooking some great lake, just to spice ut the battlemap game over the course of this long ass project

Lords for your faction can be recruited later on with building requirements, etc.
Lords for other factions keep coming back til their faction is wiped out, and if you can confederate (dwarfs, greenskins, empire) while the other faction's LL is leading an army you gain control of them permanently
For example, Skarsnik's Crooked Moon faction can steal Grimgor, Azhag, and Wurrzag via confederation, and if there is a later rebellion that revives the Greenskin or Bloody Handz faction they will not be able to use those leaders.

I do this for just about every lord ideally

well, it would be nice if they improved the AI. but i'm sure that's easier said than done.

aside from that, these games don't have much of the messiness of real war. it's usually quite easy to pump out a perfect army, made exactly to order, and march it around doing exactly what you planned. the game would be harder (or at least more variable) if more things were kept out of the player's control, and you had to "make do" in many battles with whatever imperfect army and chaotic conditions have been handed down to you. battles would be less predictable and you would have less cause to autoresolve. on the other hand, it could easily get annoying if it was handled wrong, so maybe not.

How about some of these points work as outpost hubs for the southern realm factions, giving the locations the feel of mercenary warcamps or strategic assignements, functioning as 1 to 2 to 3 tiered garrisons AND armies? As the southern realms gimmick i propose is that they get recruited by defencive/military allies to move an army to a regions PoI to aid in that perticular factions war efforts, the southern realms can then start building settlements with an emphasize on garrisons to fill your army compostion that is paid for as mercs by local allied region, letting you basicly field only the general and a small elite group, while the chunk of your army comp is provided through buildings that through tiers 1-3 field 25-75% of your army, giving you options like frontline, flanker, melee damage and ranged and of course cavalry, artillery and monsters cores in groups of 2-3 units per building type/tree in that regions PoI, fuctioning only in that region, thinking that you can have the option of linking the merc army with allied to function on forward campaigns for a number of turns/end of incursion. Dogs of War as the mercenary horde faction with Border princes, Tilea and Estalia having simalar but distinct aberations of the formula. I'd like these PoIs to be and expanded version of the quest system that actually impacts the campagin map gameplay, giving CA finaly a reason to make and use hd assets that populate the campaign map to flavor and freshen up the rather stale battlemap state, greenskin hovels, heaps og shiny stuff and encampents thats just a small cluster in just a small part of the map thats otherwise a giant ruined knights order castle, covered in the interchangable corruption/faction pride, just for that little spot you can poistion your general and bodyguard around to gaze over the ensuing carnage that is TW:Ws battle simulator, bring back the assymertical map design.
