I'm playing DA:I for the first time after getting it cheap during black friday. At what point does it get fun?

So far i'm bored out of my mind. The story is a boring generic 'demons are here, go stop them marked chosen one!'. None of the charterers introduced so far seem interesting at all apart from maybe that bald elf guy who sleeps a lot. But holy fuck everyone else is so boring. The world is boring as fuck and I have no desire to explore it. The combat seems okay for now but doesn't seem like it can carry the rest of the game.

I've only played a few hours, should I keep playing? Or have I gotten everything I will?

You could always try taller vs wider and it takes up less space. You can technically rig up a bin for mice and hamsters, but I don't know if rats are too powerful for that. I use toilet paper rolls and various crap to give as tubing. The carton box thing is a pretty good idea.
I'm a little concerned about our cats getting ahold of the mice, but right now I think I may have to devise a plan to keep them from killing eachother.

What's the most entertaining warden origin, /dag/?

I'm currently doing an elven mage, not entirely sure if I care for it, to be honest. I like the spells and all, but I just don't have the same drive as I did on the human warrior I beat the game with for the first and only time. The revenge plot felt like a good drive, and killing things with a big sword was pretty satisfying, if mundane.

I prefer rogue to warrior, it feels more challenging at first but the leveling progression is more satisfying. They also get more skills so you can actually invest into stealing.
Mages themselves are alright to play I suppose, but their only tie to the rest of the game is Jowan. Who cares about Jowan?

I caved and started playing a rogue, the intro is a lot more interesting, I never played a city elf.

Can rogues make use of shields at all? Like, if I wanted to not got dual-wield for whatever reason, could a shield make a decent addition to my arsenal, if only to provide higher armor rating?

I like the fact that I can even equip them. I always felt 2 and Inquisition really took away your ability to play in ways that aren't conventional, and possibly not even entirely viable, unless you really try.

I guess a shield rogue is doable in early levels, but it's pretty pointless imo because you don't get access to any of the shield talents like warriors do. Simply having high dexterity is better if you want to have good defense.

I can forgive off duty soldiers wearing their armor, but it just seems pretty fucking silly that the arl's son switched into combat gear to rape elven maidens, plus Soris isn't a warrior now, and his only ability of use is Dirty Fighting. Stealth could be useful if it didn't break instantly for him in cutscenes.

I'm so fucking frustrated with this part, I'm tempted to lower the difficulty from nightmare, but I feel like that's cheating. I can't even beat the guard captain and his two lackeys.

I liked it overall and replayed it several times, but it's also a very frustrating game compared to DA:O or even kotor2. The companions have a hidden approval counter that you can't check, enemies just run past your tank and target your spell casters no matter what you do, there's a bug in one of the early areas that makes your companions stop following you, the pathfinding is beyond awful so you often find someone stuck in some shrubs, and so on. I'd say it's worth playing because there are several really cool parts, but it'll also probably piss you off.

Assassin is still good for Mark of Death, and even if you're not going for a backstab build, Coup De Grace lets you backstab enemies as long as they're paralyzed without actually positioning yourself behind them, which makes some other assassin skills useful because mages get plenty of paralyzing spells.
I'm not a big fan of rangers, the summons aren't that useful until you get the final upgrade and it doesn't make a lot of sense lore-wise for anyone who's not a Dalish elf.
