Normal w/ Temperings+Heavy if you want to farm HBLB+Watchers (mediocre beam damage but superior blade damage). Lost Nourishing setup for 1 Rom/Gargoyle Radial, 1 Amy Triangle, 1 Amy Waning. Normal Nourishing setup for 2 Rom/Gargoyle Radials and 1 Amy Triangle.

Lost if you want to farm Amy more, Normal if you want to farm Rom for a Nourishing setup. Lost is a bit easier in my opinion.

I assume your fire gems are much better than your arcane gems since there's rarely any good arcane gems early game. Plus the Spear has higher base damage than the Cane. Make sure to pick up Exe gloves from Cainhurst, it destroys Amy in the Frontier.

Not sure if you're already aware of this, but those gems are for arcane builds. If you just want to buff, use fire/bolt paper.

When it says that, it will turn your weapon into an elemental damage dealer.
If it says it adds both physical and elemental, put it on a weapon that does both physical and elemental, like the boom hammer or the tonitus

If a weapon has 0 fire damage, increasing it by 10% is going to do nothing at all.

So instead it converts the weapon to fire damage, and then increases it by 10%. It also scales off Arcane now, since STR/SKL only boost physical damage and ARC boosts elemental damage.

It's the foundation of an ARC build.

In the Arcane build guide it says to get the saw spear. Why not Ludwigs blade, even though it has better scaling?

Also, I just realized a terrible flaw in game design. You know how there are attacks where if you mash dodge after getting knocked down they punish you? Well, if you don't mash dodge you're locked into the getting up animation after a certain point.
And you don't have i-frames a bit before the getting up animation either. Basically, it's pretty stupid and sends conflicting signals to players.

I don't know if I made my game unnecessarily difficult, but I'm at the end of my first run in the game and basically beat almost every boss so far with the BoM, except Vicar Amelia and the first ludwig phase since they kept moving out of range, though I still used it on his second phase.

For every boss it's just chains of dodges and R1, with L2 or R2/L2 if there is enough time, and R1 combo for hunters and bosses that are safer to stay close since I can quickly rally back small damage. It's kind of useless before at least +6, without decent skill and without anti-clockwise metamorphosis though, and I still wish the charge attack had better range for backstabs.

What's with that birdcage-elevator in Mergo's Lair (middle) that just leads down into a black abyss of nothingness waaay underneath? It looks like all you can do is walk off and fall to your death once you reach the bottom. It's in that area with all the two crossbow attendents and the two huge attendents right before you go up an elevator to fight Micolash

Also, there is a door underneath the cathedral ward (where that church giant with the ball and chain is kneeling) that just says "closed" when I go up to it. What's on the other side / how do I open it? I beat the game a few days ago

By the time you get 30 vit and start investing in Arcane, you should've long since killed BSB and got the fire gem. The door you're referring to is permanently locked. The other side is the bridge where you fought the Cleric Beast. You can test these by dropping Shining Coins at the door and then seeing them on the other side.

Stepping out into the abyss is perfectly safe. The shitload of notes people place around there didn't tip you off that maybe there's ground? You could also throw a shining coin to check if there's somewhere to stand.

Go into the abyss and look around. Make sure to make contact until your arms change position before you kill it.

That door cannot be opened, but if it could be, it would lead to the great bridge where you fight Cleric Beast. It was a planned shortcut, but remains forever locked due to performance issues with having both areas loaded at the same time.

If you're still wanting to go after it: take the elevator from Mergo Base to Mergo Middle, then take THAT elevator down (you'll know it's the correct one because the cage won't close). Halfway down you can step out of the elevator into another path. This leads to a large bridge with 3x Winter Lanterns. After navigating that, continue into the next room which is filled with spiders. Kill them and proceed to a lever. This drops the brain into the pit and stops you from being frenzied when outside in the beginning of the zone. Go past the lever outside and grab all the goodies. Make sure you climb down where the brain dropped and grab the Blood Rock. This will put you back towards the start of the level, right past the large spider.

I think that is my biggest Issue. I feel like I have the health. his attacks are hard to avoid but i'm getting better at it, but I feel like I'm just not dealing damage fast enough.
I'm only level 64 with 37 Vit, 25 STR and 20 Arcane and i'm using the wheel. I can grind down his beast form relatively well but the Holy Blade is different. I think i need to go grind a bit and raise my Arcane to up the damage of my wheel.

Arc Wheel is actually really good at flinching him in his second phase. The R2s, being multihits, really grind away at him. Pop a Beast Blood Pellet, rev up a couple times and go ham and it should make short work of him.

I've never actually tried using a beast blood pellet ever, I had only noticed that the untricked mode of the Wheel did more damage per hit so that had me assuming that Arc Wheel was less than optimal. After I grind for more Blood Vials, i'll give that a shot and see how far that gets me.

The Wheel is a bit tricky in how its damage works. When it's untricked it's pure blunt damage (or it might have a tiny bit of arc damage, I'm not sure), and when it's tricked, it gets something like a .5 increase to its arcane scaling, a 200% increase to arcane damage, and a 30% decrease to its physical damage. Revving the Wheel gives a 10% or so increase to its arc damage per rev, at the cost of increasingly heavy HP drain.

As far as Beast Blood Pellets, those give you an increase to your physical damage the more you fill the beasthood bar, but it also decreases your defenses at the same time. Normally beasthood is useless on an arc build, but the Wheel still does a decent amount of physical damage when it's tricked, so the damage output should go nutty real quick.

Having 50 fire defense doesn't mean he takes 50% bonus damage from fire. It's impossible in BB to do more than your weapons damage. If your attack is higher than 8x the defense you do 0.9x AR, which is the best you can ever do.

If you are dealing 500 fire damage to a guy with 50 fire defense, you will do 450 actual damage once you hit them.

I've done it friends. I've finally beaten Ludwig, The Holy Blade. My heart is still pointing and I feel tingly all over.

Thanks a lot for that tip about the Blood Pellets Anon, It gave me just the edge I needed to take him down in the nick of time.

I gotta say, Ludwig might be favorite in this whole game so far. This is still only my first playthrough and I haven't beaten the game yet but everything about this boss is so great. Ludwig is cool, scary, and the music just god-like. I fucking love Bloodborne.

Which one is best is hard to say, but I'm leaning towards either quality or skl/blt. They both get some o the biggest damage numbers, their viscerals are powerful, and in the latter case, access to high power guns is really strong.
