I mean, all the summoning spells apart from the basic raise dead one were pretty strong.

The main problem is that there seems to be something fucked with units not being able to be hurt while being knocked around, which fucks up a lot of offensive spells. Then the bombardment spells get fucked because they have tiny hitboxes which makes most of their projectiles miss most of the time.
Meanwhile, the magic missiles seem to randomly get changed from being super OP oneshot-machines to completely useless every other patch.
Many buff/debuff spells are pretty good, but I just wish they would fix the shit with the offensive spells so they can possibly start balancing them properly and make shit like lore of heavens useful.

A lot of that is pretty subjective. Going back to previous games is nothing new for total war games anyway. The " same basic strategy" shit is defiently something that happens with the factions in rome 2 though so not sure what he is talking about.

Overall those things is really subjective. I continually went back to shogun 2, when Attila had just been released, even if shogun 2 had all that "basic strategy" shit going on for it. Attila was still a really fun game. Older games have the "familiarity advantage" to it I guess.

Don't think I've ever experienced it doing that in Rome 2. At least not with any competence.

Battles tend to play out like in Rome 1, the AI is too retarded to make use of its numbers and if they see a line of units they will attack, clumping up and waiting to either get rolled up or hammered. Meanwhile ranged units sit in the back and wait to get demolished by your cavalry.

I thought it might have something to do with barbarian factions but this screenshot doesn't really support that idea.

In the start of any total war game, you start with a small fucking army or navy, like in medieval 2, as England, the intro says how you have amazing heavy cavalry and lots of mercenaries from the invasion, also, London was a big city by that time but you start the game with London only having buildings that a regular small town has also you start the game, you get a few units of Spearman, and I think 1 light cavalry unit. I want a total war where every faction starts with 2 or 3 full 20 stack armies ready to go, and developed cities.

You can't really put your weight behind underhand either, since the stabs will be either through extending the arm (barely any force behind it), or an upwards arc (against gravity).

To block an underhand blow all they need to do is lower their shields or plant them on the ground, something that's probably already happening anyway. To block an overhand blow you need to raise the shield, requiring far more physical work and leaving your vital legs vulnerable.

With an overhand attack you can keep your shield firmly in front of you, to make an underhand attack you need to move your shield to the side, exposing yourself.

Empire is in the middle of not-Europe with lots of buffer states like Kislev and beastmen live in the dark woods making poo-idols while skaven are regarded as being merely a rumor or legend. Only vampires are a real threat and they were only a threat for 50 years 200 years ago and again now that Mannfred has come back

Meanwhile Dorfs are surrounded by greenskins on all sides and are actively at war with skaven for control of their holds, and chaos dorfs probably bully them also

Dorfs are the ones who are supposed to really be struggling but the way the game is set up the empire has to constantly respond to various threats quickly while dwarfs just have to steadily march south pounding the greenskins all the way because there are no darklands for greenskins to retreat to nor are there skaven ready to burst up behind you in holds you just conquered

Pretty sure cavalry provinces only improve cavalry charge - not charge across the board. So don't recruit no-dachi there. If you want +5 charge, there's an encampment building you can make. I'd almost go +4 attack, +5 charge, and use the cover of forest whenever possible.

man those camel gunners in Empire are insane, they have the same ability as any other cav gunners to fire all their guns at once, but the guns themselves are ridiculous, its like some shrapnel loaded mini-canon

I haven't played Warhammer, but from what I gather from watching a few videos, the direct damage spells range from mediocre to worthless across the board, with 1 or 2 situational exceptions.

The only ones that seem impactful are the unit buff spells, but then, I dunno how that's too far a jump from earlier titles in the series.

I know when Rome 2 came out, there was a lot of shitposting around "magic" being in that game with every unit having a "press button to fight better", and generals having similar powers, "press button to instil fear" etc. Even Shogun 2 had it. Stand and fight, warcry, second wind, they're basically an incarnation of what I've seen of Warhammer magic.

It seems pretty underwhelming. I'd always imagined magic in Warhammer would be battle altering, as opposed to pretty fire-works. It doesn't look like it adds too much that prior games don't also have.

I haven't played it so I'm likely to be wrong, but that's my impression anyway.

This is the sad thing though, you're 100% right.

Some spells are battle altering but the majority are weak. And it's only going to get worse with these new changes.

Honestly the whole system needs a overhaul. Whats there is a good base to work with, it just sucks they seem to be giving it very little attention.

Darthmod is ok, it still has some ancient bugs that most other mods dealt with, but overall its ok, just make sure to get rid of the cringy star wars crap. Its also worth mentioning that its the only mod that doesn't add crap like two steps from hells, or any other "ebin" music to the game, that alone makes it much better than most others
