Its certainly playable, the partial gives you translation for some skills and menu stuff which is nice, but not even that is a necessity.
I'm pretty sure there is a difficulty setting at the start which is defaulted to easy, and there is no penalty for dying, so you can just mash through it and get what you need, most of the lewd is combat stuff, so you'll see plenty.

As for recommendations, I can't really say anything other than the guy who made raine's rave just published the trial for his new game, which is pretty much the same deal but with some crafting elements and such, little more tricky without any translation. Its really promising though, some of the lewd is actually animated.
