Right, infantry, I thought about vehicles, my bad senpai
We really need /rtsg/ back, but then again it'd just die within a week, and this isn't the best place to discuss RTS games, unless people would agree to a merge with a long ded general

We already agreed to merge /civ4xg/ with /rtsg/ and /cbg/. We just can't change the thread's name because it triggers /gsg/.

You can make rtsg or cbg again if you want.

>>
>>161808968
I'm not joking, we briefly tried to change from a 4x general to a strategy general.
It was quickly followed by someone on /gsg/ saying we were stealing their spotlight, and a huge amount of willy wanking spam.

Nowadays, now that CivVI is out, all the kids are back and decided to change the rules despite a consensus being made.

A couple of people who didn't care about 4x wanted to talk about other games.
They didn't want to go to /v/, so when the next thread was coming around they created a new general.
Some other people just wanted civ4xg and another civ4xg thread was created anyway. The new general died and people came back to civ4xg

DISTANT WORLDS might be up your alley, as DISTANT WORLDS is very complete, and allows you to do a lot of things, but DISTANT WORLDS also suffers from a lack of communication, since DISTANT WORLDS doesn't explain much and in DISTANT WORLDS, everything is automated from the start, so DISTANT WORLDS pretty much plays by itself.
However, in DISTANT WORLDS, you can play as a pirate.

>>161813419
Yeah, but games like Ground Control where losing an uni may make you lose the war is really stressful.

No, Ground Control is about starting with a handful of units, and progressin on a linear map. Like that other games, Myths, or something.

Red Alert 3 has some nice walls, but they're so fragile they're basically just cosmetic.

I heard they look decent in Civ6, but walls are completely useless in these turn-based games.

>>
smallest Superweapon building ever
>>
>>161813387
The original Star Ruler.
>>
>>161822080
Wait, I got it. The AI is retarded.

It will try to capture ressources that are near, and only when these will be under control, it will start building units.
In the arena map, you spawn with 4 ore deposits, so the AI tries to capture them before building troops and can be easily rushed. In snowdrift, there are only 2 ore deposits, so the AI capture his immediately and start pumping units.

I thought I finally understood how to play Red Alert 3, but it turns out I was just exploiting the AI. That's a bit depressing.
>>
>>161820626

If I can find a demo, yeah. The reviews on Steam aren't encouraging, so I'd like to try it first.

I'd like something straightforward, like a normal RTS where you send your troops to fight, but with all the depth of an actual 4X. Disciples 3 has some really neat stuff (unit progression with interesting and original ideas) but the combat was bad.

Ultimately, all your arguments boils down to "you play MY way or you don't play", which is exactly what Filthy does and why he's scorned.

>>
>>161845810
Except literally any rational competitor in a competitive environment would call you out for that bad sportsmanship. The problem people have with Filthy is that he takes it to extremes and makes people actually able to win against him feel compelled to not try anyway. In the example provided it was not the case. The guy got obliterated and steamrolled with ease, but ultimately put both of them seriously behind because of it.

>>161845959
Rules can and should be set by competitors in the event and/or those hosting the event. If theres a chess tournament with special rules that you sign and acknowledge upon entering, you can't bitch about them when someone uses them.
>>
>>161846148
Woah, I was not aware that playing against a Youtuber on a public server was automatically competitive.
>>
>>161846074
But heres the thing. That has nothing to do with what happened. First off this was a game competition not a life and death struggle. Secondly, a terrible player taking the initiative to attack someone who they had no chance of winning against is not the same as defending. The guy could have kept going on his own strategy and maybe competing for the victory. Filthy obviously wasnt attacking him, it was the other way around. The guy realized that he was being outclassed by most other civs and decided "Hey since I cant win im gonna epic troll this e-celeb and ruin his chance of winning" which is just bad sport.
>>
>>161845361
>if you can't raise to someone's level, you drag him down to yours.
Fuck sportsmanship. You try to complete your objectives or destroy the enemy though any means possible. Failing that, spite the enemy in any way possible. Let them know even the slightest taste of annoyance for just a few more moments before you lose. Make them hate you and despise you for dragging them with you to hell.
>>

>>
>>161846686
>Changing the subject

Get back here. It doesn't matter if it was done to another random. Its bad sportsmanship to do something in a competition to fuck over another person when you know you have already lost or doing so will cause you both to lose. This crazy argument wouldn't have ground anywhere outside of a place like this.
>>
>>161846404
>"Hey since I cant win im gonna epic troll this e-celeb and ruin his chance of winning" which is just bad sport.
Anyone play the board game Cthulhu Wars? This reminds me of that, the board game had mechanics in place for players to end the game with eneryine losing and leave no winner.
Personally I like the idea. Fuck being honorable and all that shit. If you can take everyone out (including yourself) then you can at least say you denied victory to the enemy. That's a win in my book.
>>
>>161846969
Once again you keep acting like this is some kind of real world life and death struggle and the connection just isn't there. Theres a difference between defending yourself and being in a competition and losing but sabotaging someone else for fun before you leave.
>>
>>161847125

>>161847024
>"what I don't like is bad sportmanship"
Lolno. You don't make the rules, so get off that high horse you have.
>>
>>161847261
The people hosting the match make the rules, or in the case of that group they all vote on rules with +/- on certain mechanics and wonders. Im not sure if theres an expressed or implied rule on sportsmanship or rather its common sense. To most normal people its common sense, so in this case I supported their decision.
>>
>>161847261
Literally any rational person you ask about sportsmanship would agree that doing something to sabotage someone else with the intent of taking you both out is bad.
>>
>>161846969
>Giving up is for pussies.
I think the disconnect here is that I'm gathering the other anon yapping about sportsmanship thinks that intentionally throwing the game just to fuck someone over can be equivalated to giving up.
I agree with you, so long as any resources are at your disposal, any and all attempts should be made to drag them down. Even attempts that only hurt you. There's always the hope that your last few struggling kicks can unbalance a greater power to the point where that power can be taken out by another long after you are gone.
Giving up because the only options available will not result in victory is stupid. Especially in something like a video game-board game. It's for the story, and losing is fun.
Mind you, that's just my uneducated opinion.

Take a good look, everyone. This is what Filthy actually believes. It's not the devs that make the rules, it's the one hosting the match.
We finally understand why Filthy get offended everytime someone attacks him, as it's blasphemy and an attempt at deicide.
>>
>>161846148
But has Filthy stated his "rules" somewhere?
If he hasnt and people break his 'rules' he shouldnt complain about people utilizing game mechanics
If they are clearly stated and someone disagrees, he's free to leave.
>>
>>161847817
>keeps trying to tie this to Filthy

Yeah developers of games are the only one to set rules. Lets completely ignore how almost every online game ever lets players set the rules for their matches and even use mods to add new rules and restrictions to the game. If you join a "Handguns only match" in a FPS game and you blast people with your primary and get booted, you better not go onto the forums whining "THE DEVELOPERS SAID I COULD USE ANY WEAPON I WANT IN THEIR GAME" because you'll get blown out.
>>
Okay, so let me recap.
- Filthy makes Civilizations video, and probably some mad dosh with it,
- he's also a complete scrub, and fails to understand basic mechanism while being unable to read tooltips, on a level that challenges DSP's stupidity,
- he organizes multiplayers matches, but only with his followers,
- in the rare case he accepts random people, they have to accept a shitload of made-up rules made on the spot to make sure they can't actually be relevant,
- if they fail to comply, they get trashtalk, harassed, and banned.
Am I forgetting anything?
>>
>>161848197
Normally I'd agree with you, but in this case they were justified in trash talking the guy because he was just being scummy in general. Its not like they outright kicked him from the match, but he will probably never get invited back to play.
>>
>>161848506
>NOT FIGHTING HONORABRU
Yeah, how dare people play differently! It's like these people using the grenade launcher in Call of Warfare : Electric Boogaloo! How dare they use a weapon that the devs put in?!
>>
>>161848506
Hey, just asking, but is it "scummy" to use archers? Are you supposed to just use warriors?
What about siege engines?
>>
>>161848605
Using grenade launchers to win is not the same thing. Since you used an FPS example let me help you out.

>Player joins a gungame match where they win by getting a kill with each weapon type, but using a knife on an enemy lowers their rank by one
>The guy uses the knife the entire match with no intention of winning, just stalking 1-2 specific people to epic troll them and keep them from winning

Now I mean sure you are allowed to do that (unless the server rules say otherwise), but don't be surprised when people trash talk the behavior and don't invite you to play again or outright kick you if you join later on because its just a waste of a slot.
>>
>>161849035
>blaming someone else for your defeat
If you put your videos on Youtube, you should be good enough to win despite trolls like that.
Throwing a fit and banning them because they don't play your way is childish, but then again, we're talking about Filthy "what does that buttong do".
>>
>movement changes made melee units irrelevant
>how dare you use archers!
>>
>>161849035
That's not the same thing at all, numbnuts. A better comparaison would be...
>be playing L4D, on a deathmatch setting
>one guy get shot down, starts bleeding to death
>Filthy runs to him to kill him
>get shot in the face, get shot down too
>whines like a bitch about sore losers
>>
>>161849165
Thats just not how video games work my man. E-celebs arent superhuman, especially when it comes to strategy games. You can't necessarily 'skill' your way into a strategy game victory against insurmountable odds like you can in a FPS game. If you're forced to spend tons of time building military to keep some guy off of you then chances are you literally physically can't go on to win against people who were able to safely build up their cities.
>>
>>161849517
So you're confirming that Filthy just wants an easy win and doesn't want people to bully him.
Thanks for confirming it.
>>
>>161849630

>>
>>161849630
>>161849850
How to play with Filthy :
- attacks are only allowed on 1500 AD, when everyone is fully developped,
- picking a faction with early advantage is not allowed,
- rushing is not allowed,
- attacking him directly is not allowed,
- moving your units near his borders is not allowed,
- killing his units is not allowed,
- going against his self-made rules is not allowed,
- you're only allowed to attack him when he's ready.
What a little bitch. Does he take inspiration from Civ6's AI to be a faggot?
>>
>>161849501
Except he attacked Filthy, not the other way around. I don't play L4D so I don't know the mechanics well. In most games with a 'downed' state theres an incentive to fight back such as killing an enemy revives you, or theres a chance you could get revived by a friendly. It doesn't translate well into civ.
>>
>>161850021
Well its not just him. Go online and play Sumeria. There is literally no counter to it if the person is playing well. Same with Scythia unless theres a Sumeria. part of knowing how to play FFA is how to talk the other players into doing attacks that are beneficial for you, but cripple both the other two players involved. If I make a deal with another guy to attack a 3rd party I don't care who loses because I will end up winning either way.

I think this is a stupid but I honestly can't really come up with a way to say why other than it makes sense in my head.

I dunno. For me, unpredictability adds more fun to a game. There's merit in trying to make the biggest, tallest tower, that I recognize completely. But sometimes it's fun to topple both your tower and your opennent's tower.
I guess that's it for me. Fun is more important that just another win to add the statistics.

>>161850513
The problem is that 'anyone you statistically can't win against' is defined by Filthy as 'anyone who attacks me'. If you're in the lead, go to war and take someone else's city from them why would that necessitate you no longer being in the lead? But in Filthy's games, any time anyone attacks anyone (or really, any time anyone attacks Filthy) they're trashed for 'throwing the game' when that attack might be exactly what puts them in the lead.

And in terms of sportsmanship, there's one game where there are three remaining players including Filthy - him and another guy want to call it a three-way draw, but the other guy is close to a Space victory and thinks he can win. Filthy and the other guy then agree to team up on him, take him out when he's three turns from winning, and then declare a two-way draw instead. Which is obviously just shitty.

Colonize up to your core limit.
Sector off planets that you're finished building on.
Get the +2 trait techs and locate presentients to uplift.

Add Industrious+Strong in one go to Prole presentients and use them for your mining worlds.

Gotta spend minerals to make minerals.
>>
>>161884925
Looks like you just annihilated bird-hitler, and the consequences thereof.
>AI empires: Man that bird hitler is a real dick, but I don't think warring them is possible right now

>AI empire 3: I'll join too-
>PLAYER DECLARES WAR ON DICKASS BIRDS
>AI empires: wait, we can do that?
>>
>>161885947
I merely replaced bird hitler with mushroom stalin (me).
I genocided the bird ppl on all the ceded planets and a few years later went on to attack some bugs who were part of the mega-alliance.
>bug people only have 3 planets, try to turbo-cede them
>at war with a total of 7 empires
>most of my mining stations and observation posts get rekt by warp-fags and hyperlane-fags roaming my territory
>manage to cede those 3 bug planets and end the second war
>purge bug people
>rest of the alliance goes on to gangrape the remaining bird people and some unfortunate frog people after that

I'm technologically more advanced and my fleets are more powerful than that of most small nations so it's weird they're happy to war among themselves but refuse to declare on me. All the wars I've fought so far I had to start.
I'm pretty sure it's because I have a few friends and all the layers of alliances prevent my enemies from attacking me.
>>
>>161884879
Play wide, colonize early and often. It will hurt your research speed short term but once you develop the worlds you colonize you'll start pulling ahead. Build spaceports as soon as you're able and upgrade them, every new space port increases your fleet capacity which is vital to staying militarily competitive. Being weak makes it hard to negotiate with the AI, and the AI is already a pain in the ass to negotiate with so there's no point in making it worse.

When making sectors be sure to keep an eye on their energy production, because sectors only draw energy from the mines and power stations located inside their borders. If the sector isn't self-sufficient in energy production you'll have to dump a bunch of credits in its stockpile until the AI manages to sort things out or you add a few systems with energy mines to it.

Expand aggressively. If you find a neighboring empire put an outpost close to their border to curtail their expansion. Space might look empty early game but as you research more tech new strategic resources get revealed and you'll regret giving up all those barren systems. Consider also colonizing worlds with robot colony ships if you don't have the habitability for it. This is especially useful on smaller worlds, when you just want to push your borders out and don't particularly care about the development of the world.

But leaving the Americas and Africa uninhabited, filled with barbs yet ripe for colonial expansion.

I was thinking of being Russia, and have England, France, Spain, Germany, Norway, Rome, Greece, Arabia, India, China, Japan.

Only, I don't want the arabs to claim all of Africa for themselves in the early game. I was thinking of putting the Congolese in the game but they would be able to expand completely unchecked across africa and would likely end up being a super power and that's fucking dumb.

>In the first place you can't even win a diplomatic victory in Stellaris
You can if you bring everyone into your federation
>>
>>161917048
Last one I checked were Face of War and Grey Goo, but apparently they're both shit.
There's also Cossacks 3, but that game is frankly half-baked. And this comes from a guy who really likes it.
>>
>>161917175
You mean the ones you don't kill, because going to war and killing tons of people is mandatory in Stellaris. SoSE was designed around space battles and yet it still has more victory paths than does Stellaris. You can win via diplomacy, culture, or military conquest.
>>
>>161890880
diversity, as real life suggests, is not strength
>>
>>161917214
Already played alot of Cossacks 3 I was the guy that posted alot of it here with german ui that apparently triggered some people but agree it really feels like stuff from the original is missing and to add to that it doesnt add anything from Cossacks 2/American Conquest (Morale, Stamina etc) ontop of shitty soundeffects

There are just so many things to fix. Tooltips are inaccurate, there's no ingame encyclopedia, the AI is something smart and sometimes retarded, and some upgrades don't even work.

>>161917305
just because you can't win through diplomacy alone doesn't make the diplomacy aspect of the game weaker than SoSE's

No clue. Except for the Halloween patch (that didn't really worked with me, maybe it was another mode I failed to notice), I haven't seen anything.

>>161918074
SoSE has envoy units and the ability to offer missions to other factions, it has a far better pact/treaty system as well. In Stellaris trying to woo neutral factions is often a Sisyphean task since there's extremely few way to make long-term increases to your diplomatic relations, most of which will fuck you over or fuck over your relationship with other factions. With SoSE wooing a neutral or even hostile faction takes time and investment of resources but it can be done. The main thing I like about SoSE's diplomacy is that relations are based on all you other existing relationships and your past actions against that faction rather than being so overwhelmingly dependent on ideology. In Stellaris overcoming ideological penalties is almost impossible, you have to reform your government and even then it's not a guarantee. That's why you're forced to go to war, because there's no diplomatic avenue for treating with empires that have very different ethics. Empires in Stellaris are a bunch of idealists and realpolitik doesn't seem to exist.

You can say SoSE is shallower for not having ethics and ideology but at least the AI does seem retarded for refusing literally all diplomatic overtures based on a difference in opinion, even if they'd benefit immensely from trade.
>>
>>161919327
>You can say SoSE is shallower for not having ethics and ideology but at least the AI does seem retarded for refusing literally all diplomatic overtures based on a difference in opinion, even if they'd benefit immensely from trade.
Go to war with them, liberate half their empire and they'll end up with your ideology making them much easier to diplomance.

I do hear you though. Let's just hope for an update where you can send ambassadors to try and influence another empire's culture so they flip to your ideology.
>>
>>161916465
>Planetary management
I'd argue SoSE has better management since you have to set up trade routes and production on your own instead of just spamming stations every planet. It has less per individual planet yes but in the larger scale it functions better.

>Meaningful ship customization
For basic ships I agree, but capitals certainly have meaningful differences in skill builds as to their effectiveness.

>way fucking more diplomacy options.
NO. Absolutely not.
Stellaris has for diplomacy options borders, trade, alliances, vassals, federations, and that's IT.
In SoSE you have trade and research agreements, borders, and alliances, but in addition to that you have the quest mechanic, which alone grants a lot of potential in changing diplomatic actions from behind the lines. Can you tell one nation to go attack another in Stellaris?
Diplomatic actions can also be made to boost both of your armies' stats like armor or weapons dps, bonuses which you can NOT obtain through research.
You even have embassy vessels, which can provide boosts to allies' planets and boost your relationship with them.
>>
>>161919645
>Let's just hope for an update where you can send ambassadors to try and influence another empire's culture so they flip to your ideology.
In the three-part FEDERATIONS EVOLVED DLC pack maybe, with each DLC unlocking new ambassador options.

Yeah Days of Brilliance
adds Denmark and Netherlands as playable factions and an extra campaign as the polish and is actually supposed to come out in a couple of days
both factions were pretty meh and only had 1 unique unit in the original game (Denmark has Musketeers that carry grenades and Netherlands have the Harquebusier as a really cheap and fast recruiting 17th century Musketeer replacement)

Well you can only do so much with the time period and since its a "remake" they probably wont go any further than adding the complete roster from BtW and leave the rest to the modders

Just a few gameplay things.
For example, the Cybran T2 turrets uses a laser, in other words, a direct hitscan weapon. The community patch replaces that very cool looking weapon with a more conventional one that shoot Star Wars lasers, so "laser bullets". So yeah, it's better because it doesn't constantly get stuck in hills or in the terrain, but I don't like how it looks like.

>>161929112
SCP what?
>>
>>161928880
With RTS it doesn't seem to have been the genre taking a turn for the worse, it's more like the industry just fell out of love and moved on. Blizzard dumped all its resources into WoW after 2004 and WC3 was left to die a slow, lingering death along with all the promise it had for a true sequel to the franchise. Blizzard never returned to making quality strategy games after WoW. I did buy Starcraft 2 because I thought finally they were going back to their roots and I don't think I have to explain how badly that betrayal stung.

And I'm not sure what happened with Age of Empires. 3 was a pretty disappointing installment but it wasn't terrible. It was just really different, but maybe that was enough to turn people off from it, and then Microsoft lost confidence in the franchise after that. At least we got Age of Empires 2 HD Edition though, which is probably the best thing to happen to RTS in the last 10 years.
>>
>>161929364
I got Starcraft 2 because I hoped it would help me surpass my hate of these fast-paced RTS. Despite the campaign being a shitload of fun, I don't think I played more than ten skirmishes.

Age of Empires 3 is a bit weird. It's not exactly a bad game, but it's a horrible sequel.
For starters, I'm not fond of the card system, but what I hate most is the experience system, since it rewards people who play a lot compared to people who focus on playing less often.
And coding the game so that each faction has its own experience counter is just fucking retarded. It forces you to restart from scratches, and it lock the best stuff. It's just a cheap, artificial way to force the players to play the game a lot, and that's just fucking stupid.

Other than that, there are a few good ideas in AoE3, like the plantations, the barracks being able to train several units at the same time, the cattle raising that were really neat, or the units attacking buildings with torches instead of just swinging at them.
>>
RTS died because multiplayer requires more combo memorization than a fighting game, lightning reflexes, and a little sprinkle of autism.
>>
>>161929758
>It's not exactly a bad game, but it's a horrible sequel
This is my sentiment about AoE3 also. If it were its own game and not related to AoE I'd feel a lot better about it, but it is unworthy as a sequel to what is possibly the best RTS game ever. It's greatest sin being that it does not feel like an Age of Empires game.

>>161929790
I enjoyed playing multiplayer in a non-competitive setting. With friends mostly. I still do actually. I play Stellaris and Sins of a Solar Empire with friends on occasion, and in the old days I used to play C&C, AoE2 and Warcraft 3 in a similar way.
>>
>>161930161
>in the old days I used to play C&C, AoE2 and Warcraft 3
I'm so bad at RTS. I played them a lot when I was a kid, but I never played them properly. Always cheated the fuck out of them. Starcraft, Empire Earth, Age of Empires, AoE2, C&C.
I still liked RTS, but I had more fun building a comfy base than actually fighting. It took me years to finally play them right and learn to harass. I'm still shit at them, especially the C&C games.
Thank you Supreme Commander for curing me!
>>
>>161930432
Yeah I cheated a lot when I was younger, but I've found that many games I used to think were hard were more that I just sucked at them as a kid. I like what they did with AoE2's HD rerelease in making the AI much harder, it's somewhat challenging now.
>>
>>161929146
>A shame it follows Star Ruler's habit of experimenting things
How's that a bad thing? Would you rather all rts games are the same?
>>
>>161930653
Breaking away from their core mechanics is partly what killed the genre.
>>
>>161930553
I dunno, I honestly think old RTS were tougher, since they didn't even bother hiding that the AI was cheating. Just see Empire Earth.
Even Starcraft was tough, the first time I played it, by the moment I figured out how to gather ressources, I already had 10 marines shooting my command center.

I have been playing a 3 day Stellaris multiplayer game with my girlfriend and we have slowly been taking on the rest of the galaxy trying to build up our territory + fleets to be able to fight the awakened fallen empire.

The unbidden were pretty easy, she got psi jump drives a day before me and I was using hyperlanes. It took fucking for ever for me to get anywhere with hyperlanes.

I decided to build synthetics on all of the new planets the I colonized/conquered because they get a 20% increase to everything and it has propelled by energy credits/minerals/research output past hers.

The leviathans DLC is pretty meh I wouldn't recommend buying it. The creatures you fight aren't anything special and the curators don't provide any benefits worth $10bux - maybe get it on special and don't be a cuck like me.

One thing I hate about /gsg/ is that if you play the games all day and then go out into the real world I feel like I have a +20% autism buff. We went to the supermarket to buy groceries to make dinner and I felt strange. After we finish up this game I'm gonna take a break from gaming for a while.

Also in Stellaris she is really greedy, we are in an empire together and because she got Psi Jump Drive a lot earlier than me she expanded a lot into my part of the map and when I started expanding into the large chunk of where the unbidden used to be she got salty as fuck despite her empire still being bigger than mine.

Oracle feels pretty strong, especially early on. I think a problem with VI's wonders is that they're mostly suited for particular victory types, while often being situational even then, with the "can only be built on a grassland, next to a river, pasture, an encampment district during full moon" shit. Meanwhile Oracle is useful for pretty much every victory condition and isn't tricky to build unless you start on some mongolian steppe with one hill tile for production.

Step 1: Fix war. Wargoals don't do what they are supposed to do so why not have winners pick defeated empires apart? More hot coalition on coalition action. Different ethoses allow for different actions or let them be easier.
Step 2: Make sectors have their own AI and fleets. Want to have a doomstack? You'll have to let sectors field bigger fleets that might make them more successfully rebel. Oversized empires collapse under their own weight

Turns out I could beat each fleet with my to 120k fleet by popping in their back just after they arrived in a system.
I managed to negociate a peace after that because they lost the majority of their fleet.
Just after that they declared war to an other weak empire
Except every weak empire (pretty much all empire) had defensive pact with this empire
Weak but with each empire having 1-2 40k fleet it was enough to face the two 80k leftover of the awaken empire.
Meanwhile the Imperium of Man build back it's fleet to 2 fleet of 300k.
The awaken empire lost the war to to coalition.

A tech tree that isn't bland as fuck and gives flavorful descriptions of what each tech involves drawn both from real-world theories and technobabble as needed (I recommend the developers take a look at the GURPS sourcebook 'Ultra Tech' sourcebook). High level techs that can significantly change gameplay and how elements of your empire work - as befitting the massive potential for radical technology to alter nearly every aspect of life and society - rather than a shitload of +/-2.5% that spark the imagination or give any real impression of progress.

Texcoco isn't in snow, the snow is just to show the districts belonging to Texcoco.

Trading Post = Commercial
Manufactory = Industrial
Offshore = Harbor
Academy = Campus
El Dorado = Colosseum

wip, messed up by texcoco when I placed its commercial north of it instead of south of it, since south it'll eventually get +4 from 2 harbors, and there it won't steal another tile from my capitol.

I haven't played in a while, so maybe I'm missing something.

But habitability is just a cap on your happiness right?
50% happiness is the baseline happiness.
If you have 0 happiness increase you're just as well off with 50% habitability.
If you have +10% happiness you'd want at least 60% habitability.

With individualist you'll get the +15% happiness building, but it's only worthwile when you have a high base yield to work from, so not really relevant for expansion.
And you'd have enough habitability with a frontier clinic or 1 of the two 5% habitablity techs.

I see how easily you could cripple yourself, especially when enslaving aliens - especially I see you picked non-adaptive, that means planets you conquered would likely be filled with slaves and mines and your master race won't move in to man the labs, I expect your science efforts to be crippled like there's no tomorrow. I can't really advice you since I love playing liberal empires, but you are probably in for some pain and humiliation.

Non-adaptive has been the most awkward thing to work around as Intelligent, Talented, weak and Fanatical Materialists are the core things with this species and I needed the +2 from non-adaptive to balance those.
The idea originally was very intelligent and hyper-curious little cute things being dominant over the larger and physically stronger alien races.

I might change it to either Intelligent, Talented, weak and solitary or Intelligent, Quick Learners and weak.

I've never managed to get xenophobe to work, really. I kind of see it as a handicap with roleplaying purpose, because it always just ends up as a worse version of collectivism. You really need to go high on anti-ethics divergence for it to work.

If you're collectivist, you can just enslave or purge wrong thinkers in your population, but if you're xenophobic, you're pretty much stuck with the protester and can't do ANYTHING against them. So you inevitably end up hating your own species, which beats the point of the whole "master race" theme.

Xenophobe is slavery hard mode.

So, I'm trying to work out the best combination of Traits for my species based on what I've heard in this thread.

Charisma's in, for sure, as it's a bonus that can't be replicated anywhere else.

Nonadaptive may or may not be, depending; the thread's been pretty silent on whether or not I should go for it. The points it gives back seem pretty worthwhile compared to the penalty it gives.

What's your plan on xenos? Judging by your charismatic pick, you want to be diplomatic, does it mean you gonna run multicultural society? If so, non-adaptive is a safe pick. If not, you might regret cutting yourself out of colonisation.
>>
>>162046645
Nonadaptive is basically free points mid-late game but can be a moderate liability very early on, it gets negated even earlier if you go multicultural and have xeno migration. Thrifty is one of the other really good traits since fleet size in the late game is capped more by your credit supply than the actual fleet "cap". Communal is another good trait since happiness is always useful and things that boost it are a little rare I find.
>>
>>162051014
>>162051429
Yeah, I'm definitely playing the game as an 'empire builder,' where my dominant species will go out and assimilate primitives and accept migration treaties so that I have tons of different species for expansionistic colonization.

As for Thrifty, I'm thinking that I don't want to focus on traits that don't affect my leaders; I'll likely have far more xenos running my power plants than I will my dominant species, so I was thinking of going with Enduring instead, allowing me to save points on leaders over time.

Does that make sense?
>>
>>162051846
Xeno leadership is a good way to make xenos happy, but I usually drown in influence late game anyway with leader lifespan going through the roof by tech. Early game it might be helpful.
>>
>>162052052
Xeno leaders would mean the loss of my Charismatic bonus, wouldn't it?

What traits would you use, then?
>>
>>162052052
Oh, how about Talented?

That way, between my Traits and my Government, my leaders will start at 3 stars (4, after the government is upgraded). Once I research the technologies that raise my leaders another 2 stars, I can allow xeno leadership and suffer no drop in ability!

A three star admiral right off the bat would be a huge boon -- and three star scientists, too!

>>
>>162062951
>>162061707

apparently mass driver spam is good for all four classes
>>
>>162061707
Since 1.4 didn't change shit in regards to it, the optimal general purpose build and fleet comp is still massed Cruisers with M plasma weapons and 1 Kinetic Artillery. M plasma hits hard enough and accurately enough that it has no problems with either Corvettes or Battleships and the Kinetic Artillery is technically slightly less powerful than the M plasma but can fire at almost twice the range letting it thin the herd by pounding enemy BS and cruiser shields out of existence before engaging, since they do 33% bonus shield damage, letting your 75% armor ignoring plasma weapons get to work a little faster.

This is however, only the best for general purposes. If your enemy is spamming shields, missiles and strike craft but has no armor then you should switch over to full kinetic fits with shitloads of flak destroyers. M plasma would still win the day mind you, you'd just take more casualties than you would by refitting. Still should stick with cruisers for the most part though, they're kinda ridiculous for how effective they are as a weapon platform, point for point cruisers out-shoot battleships every time and are much easier to replace.

The difference between the M plasma cruiser spam and other fits is pretty small though and is only realistically going to matter against players and who the fuck plays this game in multiplayer. So build whatever you want and have fun. Except missiles, missiles are still fucking garbage the instant the AI detects them which is instantly and starts putting PD on fucking everything or until you get swarm missiles.
>>
>>162063896
So does that mean you dont even need destroyer escort if cruiserspam can swat even corvettes?
>>
>>162063896
>75%
Whoops I forgot they changed that number in 1.3. It's 90% now on the best plasma weapons which is frankly ludicrous.

Also torpedoes might be worth considering right now since 1.4 buffed them with 50% armor penetration on top of their shield bypass making them very consistent and high damage if they don't get shot down they still do though
>>
>>162064184
None whatsoever. M plasma has like an 80% base accuracy and 20% tracking and will get further boosted by admirals and ship computers and as far as I know and I actually tested this so I'm almost certain it's true the hit chance formula is basically
accuracy-(evasion-tracking)=hit chance
and the average AI corvette is going to have about 80% evasion. You're going to end up looking at around a 40-50% hit chance with them anyway and the shear volume of fire coming out will obliterate them.
>>
>>162063896
>Except missiles, missiles are still fucking garbage the instant the AI detects them which is instantly and starts putting PD on fucking everything or until you get swarm missiles.
Can you exploit this by putting like a missile boat or two into your fleet so the enemy wastes overproportional amounts of slots on PD?

Colosseum is so good as to be banned in many multiplayer servers. Certainly strong for cultural victories, since you're probably going to cluster your first six cities in range of your capital's aoe buffs anyway, plus the amenities are great.

Ha, Filthy decided that building a colloseum was being a scrub?

What are your best guesses for the first Civ 6 DLC?

I'm assuming that the current list of city-states won't be duplicated in new DLC civilisations, so Portugal, Sweden, The Netherlands, Canada, worst Korea, and Carthage are all out.

Also speculations about what new features we can expect

Yeah but you'd be woefully inefficient.
Swarm missiles fix that problem with torps anyway since they travel slightly faster (6 speed compared to 5) they arrive first, and are immune to PD by virtue of 200% evasion so they attract all the fire, dodge it all then hit and then the torps slam into them before the PD can do sufficient damage to them to nullify them.

Missiles being terrible is honestly an exaggeration I like to make since they're actually great early and good late, it's just that without swarm missiles they're legitimately useless for 90% of the mid game and that's where most of the action is in stellaris.

swarm missiles aren't THAT late in the tech tree

I think the first tier costs something like 4-6k engineering research
>>
>>162066079
I never have the bastards pop up before t5 missiles. Fuck I've had synth research as spiritualists before fucking swarm missiles before now.

Macedonia would be nice as some sort of Cultural Kongo - doing what the Kongo does with religion but with culture somehow. Maybe they can't acquire culture normally but instead what they build gives them a percentage of other people's culture. Or something like that, a trait called 'Hellenistic'.
>>
>>162066224
Aaaand having just checked it they require t4 missiles to even have a chance of appearing in the tech lottery, whereas the ridiculous plasma weaponry doesn't even require t1 lasers to unlock, it just has a much reduced chance without it.

Yeah fuck missiles. I love them so much but they make it so hard.

>Macedonia
Good call. Who would be the leader?
Anitgonos?

I think South Africa, Australia Mexico or Hungary could be included. or maybe something more far-fetched like Wales or Scotland.

I didnt play stellaris much

is it bad if you only use missiles and your enemies spam point defense?
can you do anything about it or is it necessary to refit?
>>
>>162066962
Refit is pretty much mandatory before swarms, I've had an equal strength ai spam enough PD to completely destroy my missiles every wave till i got to knife fighting range

Why would you assume that since Civ V had no problem turning city-states into full civs?

Would love for there to be more alternate leaders in the first expansion, focus on new civs and mechanics later. New leaders would be interesting enough in their own right to see how different playstyles become from just one changed bonus. Look at how different Gorgo and Pericles play. A similar contrast can be achieved with France and Napoleon, with Cath being the 'Pericles' there.

Sadly, it's almost disgusting how hard certain civs are tuned to their leader's bonus. Others are less so, almost to the extent that you can kind of guess what Civs are going to get another leader. I'd say:
>Rome - Combat focused over culture
>America - no idea, but the wording on the rough rider unit makes it clear another leader is planned
>Russia - Religious focused over culture/science
>Japan - no idea, just a lot of design space here
>Egypt - Some pharaoh that takes more advantage of the god-king religious aspect

Would love to see more science civs too

But >>162049674 is like having 2 coliseums per city.
>>
>>162068389
it also gets built towards the last quarter of the game, when culture is WAY easier to get and less important because you're about to hit the end of the tree.
