Fixed. The shit in Crimson's underground is far more dangerous than the pink bats and slimes from Hallow. I'll admit the unicorns are stronger than everything on the surface level, but underground where it matters, Crimson is far more dangerous. I mean, for players who know what they're doing, neither is dangerous at all, but for the unprepared, Crimson will fuck you up just as badly as Corruption, where Hallow isn't even worth a sweat.

The secondary and more lucrative use of arenas is for squeezing the most loot out of invasions / events. By grinding up the minor mooks, they allow you to focus your DPS on the big fish and make reaching the latter waves easier where the drops come bigger and better.

The thing about this game is that offense is often times better than defense. You have to kill stuff fast and dodge their attacks. Also, chloro is an ore you can farm only after you've defeated all the mechanical bosses, so it's not that strange to be able to comfortably farm them with something that gets unlocked after you beat them. I always use buff potions when I'm in the dungeon (or hell, or the underground jungle), at least in expert mode. It's not a waste if it keeps you from dying every five minutes. Plus if you have a decent-sized plant farm you should always have enough potions on hand.

I was going shroomite with a tactical shotgun + venom bullets (for extra damage I know the debuff doesnt apply), sniper rifle (didnt use too much) and flamethrower. Boots + wings + tabi for movement (probably could get rid of boots), sniper scope and charm of myths. I can dodge him fairly well but I get hit once and it seems like half of my life gets depleted

Definitely switch to chlorophyte bullets since duke moves so fast. It might be worth doing a martian madness and getting the xenopopper for some extra damage. The accessories are fine, but master ninja gear might be of help. Make sure you are frequently using the tabi. The fight is much more about not getting hit at all rather than sponging damage, so learn his attack patterns and use the biggest possible arena you can.

I didn't get a Sextant until after Moonman, so shortly after I got the Steampunker I made a thing that does a global announcement on the night of every full moon. The faulty gates let you make a binary counter really easily, and since the length of the lunar cycle is a power of 2, that's all you really have to do.

The only other useful thing I've been able to do with them was make auto-shutoffs for my liquid duplicators.

Does smashing altars still cause random chunks of corruption/hallow in the world to appear?

You have to know a little about how (faulty) gates work for it to make sense.

If you place a gate with one regular lamp and one faulty lamp on top of it, then wire the same input through both lamps, the gate will emit a signal every other time the input is triggered. So in pic related, the candle will switch on/off every other time you hit the lever.

If you chain 3 of these together, the last gate will signal every 8th time the input is triggered. So you hook up a night sensor as the input and an announcement box as the output, sync it to the night of a full moon, and you're done, since there's a full moon every 8 days.

It's extremely convenient that the lunar cycle length just happens to be a power of 2.
