Okay guys, so I love Soraka. Her design is great and she has a lot of great skins (all of which I own) but I tend to lose on her a lot.

How am I supposed to be playing the lane? Should I be behind the ADC? I don't like feeling like I'm not exerting any pressure. Walking up for starcalls is usually dangerous and eat up mana, but, like I said, I feel useless aside from the occasional heal or silence.

Late game I get more comfortable with her and feel like I am impactful. But when should I be using my ult? Whose health should I be looking at? The midlaner? The ADC? Whoever is most fed on my team? What if it means letting someone else die just to get the bonus heal on someone else?

How do I deal with being dived on and focused while also keeping the team alive?

First of all, if you hate to play passive in lane, Soraka is not your best option. You have to be away from the enemy, especially if they have say a Blitzcrank or a Leona.
On team fight, heal the person closest to you (either ADC or Mid, although ADC is more valuable, even if you have Ardent Censer). If you have a tank on your team make him build a Spirit Visage so, when you ult him, he gets the more HP possible.
Also about the ult, use it primary to save yourself. If it happens to also save said tank or other teammate, good. But you are important to be alive, so you can keep healing them. Other tips are to focus your Q on the closest enemy to you (against a tank you have literally F R E E health regen) and for extra cheese take the summoner heal and build cdr boots (assuming you have the insight mastery, the one that gives 15% cdr on summs).

Youre the backline of the backline. You do not pressure, your adc does and with your heals, your adc can exert pressure consistently. Only Q and E when needed as you already know, they cost a chunk of mana to use. Why waste a heal resource on a nonexistent harass?

Same reason Rakafags are. Had one that went top vs sanddog and won but with no real tank other than me we lost and she fed him stacks by placing a ZZ down which he farmed and he had like 500+stacks.
