I can't speak for HOPE, but FUN is pretty mature for the most part.
That's not to say there's no drama whatsoever, but most of it is kept to themselves and rarely bubbles to the surface.
It's not exactly overflowing with life, but there are plenty of active players still online and they're all pretty approachable so long as you're not an annoying sperglord.
That being said, the blunt and salty nature of 4chan-goers is still definitely apparent, so don't come in expecting it to be an office party.

The RNG and generally arbitrary gear grind is what killed the game. The dungeons and raids are fun, but the wall to climb is what turned away everyone who just wanted to play video games. I'd probably still have been playing it off and on now if I didn't feel like I had to fight to have a life while staying mildly invested.

Nightmare fractal stole a bunch of dedstar's good dungeon mechanics anyway, so I guess I can deal with that. W*'s engine will always be lightyears better, though.
