As I said Shock Nova is objectively worse than Ice Nova/Vortex so there's no real reason to use it over those.
I'll be honest I threw in Cascade because I think it's shit but I guess you could make a build around it maybe. I've seen Cascade Miners but I think KB/FNM mines would be a better build overall.

According to all know laws of game design, there is no way that life is technically stronger than ES.

Its EHP is too small to get its shit build off the dried lake.

Saboteur is the best ascendancy for any trap/mine build. However it's only good for those builds which is why its in Medium instead of High.

Ascendent is just strictly worse everything. Raider at least does something well, even if it doesn't have the tools it needs to sustain that in hard fights. The best ascendent can do is get some stats, she doesn't actually gain any real benefits that you can't get elsewhere. There's no reason to go ascendent ever. I can at least imagine someone using Raider at some point, maybe with the new bleed boots.

Sabo is bad because trap builds are bad, and there's literally no benefit to it once you do cruel lab. You don't even bother with merc lab unless you really want something to do. The ascendency is just really weak.

There's usually someone selling Malachai kills for 1-2c. That being said, I really think that Cruel Malachai and every boss before Merciless Dried Lake should be no problem for any leveling build. Daresso is probably the hardest boss in normal/cruel if you're not armor (fuck 3 swords spawning on top of you and doing 200-300 damage a hit) then Maligaro (poison traps hurt like fuck and detonate dead/descrate is annoying).

Because I wanted to do it as a league starter and not need a bunch of gear before it starts working.

crown of eyes makes spell dmg apply as attack dmg
Meaning str will increase the dmg of power siphon.
Iron grip wouldn't do anything at this point since a modifier can only apply to a stat once.
However, iron will doesn't link up with power siphon.

We don't know if Blade Flurry will be nerfed. I think they give it a light tap to shut people up, then really nerf it in 3.0 when they will likely have new or revamped gems to push people on to.

-kill magic packs along the way
-ignore rares unless you're doing good damage
-if you're using a weapon skill, dont forget to craft a new wep every few levels (blacksmith a base to 20%, transmute/alt for +phys or +phys %)
-dont think too much about gear. get enough sockets for what you're using. stack life. slap a resist ring or two on for whatever damage the zone you're in is doing if you feel like it.

For example when i level as a spellcaster i'll find some +1 to my element gem early on and then have a hard time replacing it, resulting in my damage dropping greatly.

Then, when i get to the end of cruel my gear is so shit (since i never pick anything up) that i struggle hard with resistaces

This wouldn't actually help anything. Single target melee would still feel like absolute shit to play, except now you have no way to salvage it slightly, and single target skills would either be 'ok' at killing bosses, or retarded because they exploit the FotM mechanic.
