At it's base, it plays roughly like a jrpg more than something like baldur's gate. Classes basically just manage the level to which you can increase certain skills, but multiple classes can share multiple skills. Like all fighters can learn sword fighting, but maybe only Knights can reach the highest levels and archers can only be novice swordfighters.

Has anyone tried developing with a Vive in UE4? I just opened up an old project I was working on and my right lense is all fucky. The lower half of it is black and the upper half has black lines drawn along the lines of the lenses. I'm wondering if I have some post-processing effect that's not rendering correctly, but it's been a while since I worked on this.

It works fine in other games and in new UE projects so it's not that the head set is busted, it's just this project. Anyone seen it before?

I'm assuming because we're posting in /agdg/ that we're talking about the single player side of a game, and actually making playstyles that people bring in from other games viable is an important part of that

When I'm talking about Dks1 I'm specifically thinking about the launch experience, when stacking vit and using flash sweat and such was an easy route to cheese the game, and not the PvP variant with pursuers and whatnot

and its not just about nebulous role-playing feel, but about keeping your game from being about some boring detail and focus it on the things you actually want it to be about. I'd actually argue that segregating your builds with a class/skill tree makes it more likely that different builds emerge because they can't all use the same broken thing.

>I'd actually argue that segregating your builds with a class/skill tree makes it more likely that different builds emerge because they can't all use the same broken thing.
That argument doesn't make the slightest bit of sense. If people are going to all naturally gravitate towards a particular build in a flexible system, they're just as likely to gravitate towards a particular build in an inflexible system. Creating strict divisions in class in no way prevents people from finding the exploitable class/build/setup, which is once again not a question of the relative merit of either system, but rather of the developer's ability to balance within the confines of those systems. I can name two games with much stricter class systems than PvE Dark Souls (Valdis Story and Dragon's Dogma) which both still have extremely exploitable setups that players who have no taste for variety gravitate towards. Your argument has no legs.

As for "keeping the game from being about some boring detail", that's some subjective vague bullshit I can't begin to address. In any game with builds, flexible point investment or strict class trees or otherwise, players are going to be putting consideration into how they build their character. For a significant portion of RPG players, that is very much the point.

Is it natural for a compeltly dark level to be 50k tris even though if I had a directional light its like 100k-300k tris?

Why does unity lighting use so much performance?
>>
>>161290345
Because unity fucking sucks how many times do I tell you people to stop memeing it.
>>
>>161290345
Unity sucks at optimization, you have to do all the work by yourself.
>>
>>161290345
have you baked occlusion data yet?

lighting in general takes up a ton of performance, which is why most modern engines really lean towards as much baked lighting as possible.
>>
>>161290345
https://forum.unity3d.com/threads/why-does-light-add-verts-and-tris.291872/

Basically, Unity rerenders a triangle per light in scene? or that touches it I think?

But baked lighting and setting static lighting of objects I guess help a bunch.

unity supports vertex lit, forward, and deferred rendering
what else is there?
>>
>>161285601
Decrease for the first few months. Possibly increase after that.
>>
>>161291395
Forward rendering doesn't mean you have to have a pass per light. There are lots of ways to have multiple lights in a single pass.
>>
>>161291510
that's sorta what deferred is for

in forward, unity has a threshold for lights, after so many it switches to a cheaper estimation
https://docs.unity3d.com/Manual/RenderTech-ForwardRendering.html

back to >>161290345
if you want a bunch of dynamic lights, use deferred lighting. You should probably just bake your shit though
>>
>>161291510
You can have multiple lights in one scene in Unity with one pass . So you can have different objects each lit by a different light in the same frame with a single pass, but when you want one object lit by multible light sources you need an extra pass per light source.
>>
>>161291980
Yeah, well there's been advancements in forward rendering since Doom 3 came out so it's kind of pathetic that if you want many dynamic lights you have to eat all the drawbacks of deferred.

>>161292078
That's still not acceptable for a modern engine.
>>
>>161292112
unreal 4 uses deferred
they recently shoved in some forward support for VR though

what engine should us modern devs be using?
>>
>>161292204
nothing is more modern than the engine I am developing right now
>>
>>161292204
Well the state of the art is clustered rendering which works both forward and deferred, although I'm not sure why you'd continue using deferred. It's forward rendering, which means MSAA, transparency, etc. yet you can have tons of lights as well. It also works with reflections and portals unlike tiled rendering, and it can be used to accelerate the lighting of volumetrics and particles as well. It's pretty fucking good.
>>
>>161290746
Where's your game retard?
>>
>>161292521
Yea but we're too amateur to implement that, so we gotta take what we got. Unity is also made to support a bunch of different platforms with radically different hardware, so it has to stay somewhat simple and compatible.

When someone connects, they are assigned an ID by the server.

Was there a documention/tutorial/video you watched to learn the basics? I'm really struggling with the Godot official docs
>>
>>161297025
the problem is that they look like shit
when its 2d its easy to imagine big blocky pixels as not looking like shit but not so much with 3d

I'm just learning that, you can use them as just a standard model or render them as sprites basically.

Doom + Power rangers + Zeta Gundam = this abomination.
>>
>>161298347
that is indeed the struggle. Godot documentation suck.

Maybe if I become proficient enough I'll make some tutorials/doc.

Meanwhile the gamefromscratch tutorials and the godot documentation are the only kindofdecentbutnotreally sources.
>>
>>161297971
but the whole point of voxels is using it for performant dynamic collision
you don't get that when rotating them so its just using a shitty art style without the redeemable part of it
>>
>>161298547
3D dot game heroes looks great. You have to embrace the pixel nature and make something that works as a 2D sprite as well as a 3D model.
>>
>>161298783
>3D dot game heroes looks great.
I disagree but since this is preference there isn't much point arguing about it. If they didn't rotate or translate blocks between the voxel grid I could maybe appreciate it but they don't even try that much.

it is pretty hellish to fix those problems but you should start by collecting dxdiags and logs to search for patterns

you can also guess at ways that could go wrong that would cause a bug and try to replicate it on your system artificially and use that to figure out a workaround

from what I can see, that just means that the strcmp call is returning different things when its called in those two locations

note the values are <0 and >0 as well, possibly undefined?

also semicolon after while line: is that in your code as well? That would cause some issues

I tried having this guy chase the player, and so he'll enter the new map with a delay. Eventually, I'll create a graph with all the connected maps in the level for the AI to traverse, but right now, it just goes to whatever map the player is currently on. We'll see.

The only problem is, I found out that I never disabled the functionality for him to change the map that is shown to the player, and his hitbox is so fat that he'll trigger the change map functionality the instant he enters the new room. His hitbox also is so fat, he'll get stuck, too.

>melee fighting game
>devs use several linetraces/raycasts for weapon collision
>don't use hitboxes

Is there a reason for this? Strictly speaking of UE4 (in which Mordhau and others use traces), why not use collision shapes with Continuous Collision Detection? CCD should handle all issues with precision at higher velocities, and seems a lot more accurate/practical than a lot of traces (especially when the weapon may be a polearm or something similarily complex rather than a sword).

>>
>>161308791
Depending on the speed and precision you want, traces can be perfectly fine. A sword might as well be a line when moving at certain speeds, and you may not really care for each part of a polearm having it's own collision (e.g. you just wanna know if the head of it hit, you don't care if it was the point of the flat).

Not sure why a game like Mordhau uses traces considering it's not that fast all things considered and they do care about what part of the weapon actually hit. That said both systems work fine, but like you said I think collision shapes would be more painless than traces.

>CCD takes care of that, or at least should.
Not necessarily.

Have you look at real fast weapon attacks? Most of the time they weapon doesn't even have a middle frame, it just goes from start point to end point in a single frame and the swing effect, lasting for 6-8 frames is the thing giving the illusion of movement.
You can't put a hitbox on that, unless you use a predefined area hitbox in front of the character but you will have to modify it each time you make changes to the animation so it's not really efficient.

There is no CCD in the example I gave you because there is no path.

See that picture? Doesn't happen in Soul Calibur but for the sake of explaining, some games will have the sword be at the start in frame 1 and at the end in frame 2 by direct positioning. The swing is the thing giving the illusion that the sword did the arc when it didn't, so there is no path here.

What >>161310116 said, as far as I understand CCD if you have something that quick, pic related should happen. It will just trace straight from frame 1 to frame 2 position, meaning it doesn't actually follow the proper arc or any movement in-between.

That said I'm not sure at what point CCD would stop being useful, if you have something like the previously mentioned Mordhau, I think CCD could work fine since most attacks will take upwards of 3 frames. However you still have the problem of splitting up an attack into snapshots, if an attack is faster at one point than another, it will be less precise at moment.

Is making a Yume Nikki-type game really that bad? I don't know much about making games, but I'd like to try, and the only thing I've ever used is RPGmaker. I have an idea and some themes that I want to present and I feel like the yume nikki formula would be a good way to show them, but I'm worried about ripping it off or that I'm just being lazy and trying to justify it or something.
>>
>>161316576
It's not bad and the world could use some more good ones, but there are a million of them

Plus collecting effects isn't that fun of a game mechanic more than once

Do you have any other ideas for mechanics like that I could use? I agree collecting effects is a little overused, but the only thing that comes to mind when thinking about how to make an explorable world worth exploring is collectibles hidden around in them, with the actual effect on the character being a nifty bonus.

>>161316827
Well, what I think of when I say that is the typical Yume Nikki fangame, main character who doesn't talk, start in your room and interact with something to enter a hub area and explore a surreal world with collectible effects. Collect all the effects to get the ending

how can I make it more apparent that those data tables are clickable? (they are not clickable yet)

currently the edge lines get thicker whenever mouse hovers over them and the thin lines inside change color. but I feel that it is not enough

clicking on a data table is supposed to open a window in that empty area in upper right, which will allow to interact with the entries in the data tables

You probably already know this but the answer to most of your questions is "it depends"

In my game, the only variables saved are name, xp, story progress flags, and spent perk points. There's a load function that calculates your level and abilities from xp and spent perk points. The save instance is initialized in the player controller blueprint and then gets sent to the controlled pawn which has the load function. I initially had the save initialized and stored in the player class, but this created problems in multiplayer where your perks and xp were getting loaded into other players in your session.

Gameplay > art.

The game is fun, and the developers were good at advertising the game.

Making ~27mil from it regardless. Although it's probably close to 12million after everyone grabs their cuts, steam, taxes, etc.

Plus he worked on it part time for years instead of doing it full time in the short run. 10 million is enough to fund a developer career for the rest of your life.

I think you'd want a single save class in most cases. You could make a blueprint struct with all the variables you need (name, xp, array of story flags, etc...) then have your Save class contain an array of those structs (called Slots).

So like you would have a LoadSlot(int slot) function in your Save blueprint that just returned Slots[slot]. And now you have all your variables in that struct

I disagree, you can't justify having art as shit as Stardrew Valley, especially since it's a glorified Waifu simulator. The gameplay wasn't even that good, it did everything Harvest Moon did just worse. If you wanted combat with your Harvest Moon there was Rune Factory 1-3, which were incredible games and did the waifu simulator and fighting gameplay right.

And didn't a team make it? Chucklefish if I remember.

>>
>>161329295
Don't get me wrong, I think you're right on a lot of points. I'm pretty sure the developer had previously worked on actual harvest moon, so people were more willing to risk it with him.

StarBound was was just because people wanted terraria in a different setting and they were the first to do it. Just like H1Z1 was the first to really capture what DayZ had (and more importantly what people wanted from it).

This is really common in the Game industry, a good experimental game comes out, and then another game comes on claiming to do it up one with all those feature you wanted.

Cube World is another example.

If you'll never animate the face, it's fine. But sculpting gives you bad topology. You will have to retopologize (made up a word?) the mesh since it'll either not animate the way you want at all, or it will be hell to get it to animate the way you want.
>>

How to make a system where I spawn a lot of bullets?

as in, maybe I have shot 10 bullets since the last frame, so I want to spawn 10 bullets, but they shouldn't be all clumped together, if there was 16 ms since last frame, then I want to separate them by 1.6 ms worth of distance.

And what about if it's only 1 bullet every 2 seconds.

>>

Obviously you'd retopo it. You're going to need to sculpt and retopo it anyway if you're planning to do a high res mesh.

Using a bust and sculpting just skips the first blockout step.

In Unity you would have something like this.

if (bulletTimer < 0) {
shootbullet();
bulletTImer = bulletTimerMax;
} else {
bulletTimer -= Time.DeltaTime;
}

bulletTimer would be defaulted to a float where 2f would be 2 seconds or .16 for 16ms.

Hope that helps

Wouldn't work for bulletTimer less than delta time. Needs to be more like this, and then you still have the problem of separating them.

while(bulletTimer < 0) {
..// shoot
..bulletTimer += bulletTimerMax;
}
bulletTimer -= Time.DeltaTime;

I didn't preorder Starbound, but I did wait at my pc for the early access release and bought two copies for me and a friend. I was so disappointed.
Now that the game is out and even worse than it was when it was first put on steam, I was even more disappointed.

I also waited years and years for Stardew Valley (I checked his blog for over three years once a month) and while I didn't hate the game, I felt kind of empty while playing it. It wasn't particularly great, the movement speed to time passing ratio felt off, movement itself was sluggish, gameplay lacked any depth, the art wasn't very attractive, the music wasn't anything special, and the character personalities were nearly all unlikable. You can fix some of the issues with mods but overall it was just lackluster and that stung waaaay more than Starbound being lackluster did.

Thank god disappointment is what eventually led me to buckling down into game development.

>>
>>161334034
Flash has a lot of issues with security holes to the point where browsers aren't even supporting it anymore.
>>
>>161333786
Yes but let's be honest. Unfortunately for us I don't believe that any mod would care enough to do that.

The only way to get something would be to have someone do something which clearly goes out of the internet, like doxxing, get enough drama so that it gets out of hand and out of this thread then it would get enough attention for the mods to care and try to solve the issue.

But I don't think anyone is willing to take the risk because of a mentally retarded. I sure don't.

At least Stardew looks better than Minecraft.
And even then, Minecraft is literally the best selling game of all time on almost every platform.

Shit art is fine as long as you can make a decent game for a genre that has almost nothing.
>>
>>161334445
>minecraft got shit art
>undertale got shit art

I don't want to blame the artists but I find it interesting that those devs couldn't afford or find any artist, probably because they either were too expensive or they deemed the game to not be worthy enough for their collaboration.

Minecraft's art started as palceholder art, Mojang even hired an artist. But they never let him touch Minecraft's textures. They decided to keep the art intentionally shitty because it was "retro" or some bullshit.

Stardew Valley was made by one guy completely, including the art and music. He was being published by Chucklefish, he probably could have hired an artist, but he wanted to do it himself. And honestly Stardew's art isn't that bad, just sort of boring.

Undertale was also made by one guy. He had money, but he probably thought no artist could possibly make the art how he envisioned it.

It seems these devs constantly think retro art must be made shitty, and that all artists can only do modern HD art. They don't think any artist can make good retro art?

>>
>>161335830
I disagree.

One simple look at Google and you can find tons of artists with good retro arts. I'm not sure about the stardew valley dev but I know for a fact that minecraft had price issues with their artists and that the undertale guy just didn't want to invest too much so he didn't find anyone, and this guy had a solid audience during development so finding artists was clearly not a problem.

Minecraft didn't have price issues with an artist. They hired an artist pretty early. And he still works for Mojang to this day. They absolutely had every possibility to give Minecraft really nice art.

Adding some visual flair to the hookshot mechanic, as well as implemented restrictions on where you can aim depending on context. This is indicated by the little blocks that appear around the player.

Still need to finish implementing the smart aim locking, show the trajectory while aiming, as well as make the aiming cursor easier to read (it just goes to the max range of the hookshot at the moment when using gamepad).
