The reason you use the weapon is to delete everyone on the map with Crit-a-Cola. Even though the weapon is worse at point-blank than even a regular Shotgun, Scout will generally benefit more than his opponent from proximity. Useful every one in a while for weapon heckling, but generally pointless.

Pyro's best point is close range, which sucks for him because unlike another notable class who excels in close range (spy), he can't instantly kill people. He has to work for it, and usually it ends up not working out in his favor unless he's fighting one of the two classes he counters, sometimes three if the enemy demo has his head up his ass.

Even one of his hard counters, Soldier, can get an easy pick on him if he's unprepared or makes a mistake.

Heavy deals 250 dps immediately after spinning up and creates massive amounts of space simply by existing. He's not the strongest class in the game but when the enemy team has to start playing peekaboo once he appears, that's already a lot better than Pyro.

Spy is arguable, but against retards he absolutely destroys, which is again something Pyro can't do. He also has a decent ranged option with his Revolver, which is another thing Pyro doesn't have.

Dead ringer + Big Earner pretty much means he gets an extra life less than every eight seconds provided that he gets at least one stab before feign. If you can matador, this is almost child's play. You don't even have to cloak, just wait until the idiot enemy team tries to melee you.
