So I just started doing a little bit of Nightmare Frontier because I really want the Beast Claws, but I've noticed something about my weapons.

I've gone the whole game with the Saw Cleaver but kept the Kirkhammer on hand for backstabs and slow enemies. Now I'm realizing that the Kirkhammer's sword mode is way better than either Saw Cleaver mode. Is this normal?

Depends on the weapon.

A slower weapon with high durability like the Wheel or 2H Ludwig/Kirk hammer can use three dura down gems no problem because 1) dura down doesnt stack past a certain point so it caps out and 2) theyre slow and have high durability so you wont have to worry about them. But you're right that if you just stick a single dura down gem on a normal fast weapon it will kill that weapon in like five minutes of PvE.

And a trip back to dream, which restocks everything anyway, only takes a minute or so, it could be worse. Durability down gems could stack.

All weapons are viable, but some are obviously a bit better than the others when it comes to min/maxing. Axe is a good beginner weapon, but DONT worry about upgrading anything to +6. That becomes plentiful later in the game.

You should put a bit more thought into upgrading which weapons to beyond +6, but that's for later.
