I can't imagine what else SP was doing in those three years while he was listening to end users if he wasn't hearing "the gui is shit." Apparently he thought they just meant it didn't look pretty at first which is why he went to the PS3 GUI when that is just as bad if not worse than RGUI? I can't even think of a single other problem in RA since 0.9.9 or whatever as big as the gui, so I also thus can't imagine what SP has been doing when he has been listening to end users besides the mednafen enhancements. All he really needed to do was look at the stand alones he was porting cores from as far as their GUIs and realize WIMP is what PCfags desire as well as generally what is expected as far as layout too.

What is really holding SP back is this bizarre belief that his program needs to be the same on every platform when different platforms are different for reasons beyond his control. Input choices, screen real estate, functionality, and users on one platform not being the same demographics as the users on others.

What's your CPU by any chance? Mine is an i7-4790.

Also, I've actually found a way to get the menus to not crash on me in one to ten seconds. I enabled threaded video (on my v1.5.3 of RetroArch, enabling threaded video would instantly crash the program upon restart, I had to edit the config manually with Notepad++ to even use it again) then it let me control the menu while it was out of focus. I was able to load ParaLLEl and various N64 ROMs, some of which ran beautifully, some of which didn't. Pokémon Stadium has some mostly minor graphical glitches (along with a seizure-inducing one in one of the menus for the Kids Club), Yoshi's Story slows down a lot in level 4-2 when the effect near the water's surface is on-screen and has relatively minor graphical glitches, Perfect Dark crashed RetroArch after the "Expansion Pak Detected" screen, and Conker's Bad Fur Day looks really fucked up, but Smash 64, Super Mario 64, and Ocarina of Time all worked like a charm.

After loading a ROM, I would alt+tab to another window to bring RetroArch out of focus, and then mess around in the menus. Doing this, I was able to load up the slang port of CRT-Royale, which didn't effect performance at all, as well as remap the controls for Super Mario 64. (These default ParaLLEl controls are a bit of a mess; who hits the button on the right for the jump button and the button on the bottom as the attack button in a platformer, especially a 3D one?) There was still some crashing, though. Sometimes when I hit F1 to enter the RetroArch menu, the executable would instantly crash before I could even see the menu. At least once it crashed after I hit "Apply Shader Changes" (I had to hit that after starting every game for whatever reason, even though the shader is set to the default one in the config) and there were a couple other crashes too. But in general, the highest stability I saw with it was while it was alt+tabbed out of focus after enabling threaded video.

RetroArch will enter maintenance mode and eventually die.

maister is too busy.

Alcaro only codes to kill time or when he's bored (cares about the project but not enough to go through all the shit code).

enygmata only codes to kill time or when he's bored (doesn't seem to care about the project at all).

Kivutar will replace RetroArch with something else to keep the lakka project going.

radius will marry, have two kids and live a comfortable life in ecuador.

aliaspider will hack something else.

mudlord will shitpost about "fixing RA" but will never submit a pull request.

zeromus will write a monograph on why SP/RetroArch/libretro failed.

simias won't give a fuck.

>>

Runs without issues using the Opengl renderer but there is always that PS2 blur that DMC makes a lot of use of.
DMC3 is not designed to be played with style switching on the fly. It would make the game extremely easy.

Probably, you'd have to make sure of a couple of things beforehand like what sort of signal it supports and what sort of connectors it accepts.
Don't plug without researching beforehand, if your monitor doesn't support 30khz and you plug a computer (that isn't using CRT_emudriver or something similar) directly on it you could damage it.

>>

You could render less by going 320x240
>>
>>161178753
They don't.
>>
>>161178289
> Why stretch it out
Do you mean horizontally or vertically?
If you mean horizontally it's due to technical limitations. 640x480 is too much for most ps1 games. Also 480 is only possible with interlacing, which developers at that time may disliked. But some games have still room for up-resing so they go for 640x240, which gives a much sharper output image than 320x240.
Vertically it isn't stretched, the area beyond 224pixels is basically overscan. And the horizontal picture gets squished so 320x224 is 4:3 and not 320x240.

They (libretro) were already asking for hardware, but I guess emugen will scrutinize anything.

Think it'd be possible to write a Gameboy emulator that runs on the NES? I mean, you can write NES applications, and those applications can include whatever binary data (like a GB ROM) you can fit onto the cartridge for its given hardware and mapper, so it'd just be a matter of actually emulating the GB in real time on the NES...
>>
>>161216108
If the NES is turing complete and can expand the storage you could write a wii u emulator for it.
>>
>>161216108
You could do that on a computer that fits inside a a game cartridge and feeds the NES some output, but there's no way the NES is emulating a Game Boy in real time.

>You could do that on a computer that fits inside a a game cartridge and feeds the NES some output, but there's no way the NES is emulating a Game Boy in real time.

Honestly, that sounds like it'd be an interesting project. A cartridge with a full on SBC in it doing all the actual processing, then the NES side just reading the results and pushing them into VRAM and passing through input and other console-side tasks.

I mean, you still couldn't really exceed the NES's graphical limitations with that, but handling GB emulation or just doing some crazy shit with a NES game might be possible.

Then again, it might be hard to get timings and stuff to sync up with a SBC? I'm not really familiar with all that embedded stuff, but I'm guessing there's a reason they don't use RPi Zeros for flashcarts beyond the number of I/O pins that you could probably compensate for.
>>

>but there's no way the NES is emulating a Game Boy in real time.
I'd just like to chime in to make clear that the Super Game Boy and Game Boy Player didn't use emulation either. They contained actual Game Boy (Advance) hardware that pushed the display and sound to the host system.
>>
>>161216108
Dude, GB is more powerful that NES. There is a NES emulator for Gameboy, it runs at 1 frame per second or something like that.

That's more a limitation of the display used than the rest of the hardware. If a color display was used, the Game Boy could have handled it.

You're a fucking idiot. Clock rate means shit when comparing different architectures. A Z80 has to be clocked around 4 times as fast as a 6502 to be competitive with it because its instructions literally require 4+ times the number of cycles to execute.
>>
>>161226286

To be fair at the time everything used palettes so color restrictions have little to do with the CPU and everything to do with the GPU. If the GB had a color LCD and GPU it would just have increased the bandwidth necessary to upload the textures to VRAM but not much else.

But >>161261419 is right, the GB CPU frequency is not really indicative of its processing power, all instructions require a multiple of 4 cycles to run (and many of them take 8 or 12 cycles).

Seriously, if you want all this stuff, a Patreon should be the last thing you should be against, since it actually HELPS getting all that done.

Time is more precious than money, and often time has to be sacrificed in order to make money and survive.

Nothing is being withheld, no 'delayed releases' are being done, unlike most other projects, so I dunno what you could be against. Are the creators of ported cores entitled to a percentage of the bounty seeing as they've already done 80-90% of the work (the actual RE and emulation)? What about the community PRs that have kept it building and maintained over the last 2 years? If 10 people show up to work on a new port with PRs ranging from "corrected a spelling mistake" to "ported and fixed up all audio handling", who decides how the bounty is split?

Bounties are great to incentivise, but it can get really messy when paying out for more than very specific bug fixes. I hope the you guys get some solid terms and conditions in place before any drama starts.

neither can SP.

Now for some constructive criticism.. RA has way too many cores and that alone lowers the quality of it. They need to stop trying to add new cores and actually make their current cores good. Don't they get tired of the PPSSPP memes?

that's stupid. You're stupid.
you've completely missed the point.
People are only interested in continuing to use a piece of software if it works well, the first time. Why invest time into something that apparently doesn't work, or is shitty?
Alienating almost *EVERY* mac user, android users and some windows users who even bother to try and figure out what the fuck a 'core' is, is born of ineptitude and autistic in scope.
It seems like the only people who deserve any money are the ones savvy enough to repackage ra as an installer that includes cores and bypasses the shitty ui completely.

RA needs an installer which offers presets and a preselected package that include the most common and compatible cores. That's it. Fucking simple.

Seems kinda hypocritical to denounce people making money out of emulators and now making pledges for Retroarch progress, knowing the main reason your front-end is popular and people will give you money is those emulation cores you are using. Are you going to redistribute part of that money to previous contributors and all those emulator projects without which Retroarch would not be what it is or is it also 'at your discretion'?

It would have remained an honest idea if you limited it to pay your hosting bills but I guess money attraction is always stronger than words and you are no different than these other entrepreneurs you are hating so much. Don't forget to update your "what is Retroarch philosophy?" article in regard to your new 'perspectives' by the way.

My dad wants a cheap device for emulation only. He wants something that can be plugged to a TV and has an easy to use menu with a controller. It'd be nice if there was support for any kind of USB controller of course.

That, or some sort of distro he could dual boot into that would boot straight into a menu with games.

I'm in quite the Christmas pickle so I thought I'd ask.

I'm trying to decide between buying a Dreamcast or a PSP. PSP has more games that I want to play but Dreamcast has a higher risk of getting more expensive due to it being older and Dreamcast is much harder to emulate.

I heard PPSSPP is great but I wanted to ask before I did something stupid. Should I buy a Dreamcast and then instead of buying a PSP, substitute it with PPSSPP? I just want to know how good the accuracy is because while I've had very little issues with PSX and GameCube but I've had tons of issues with PS2 emulation. How accurate is it?

We're dying again.

Tell me friends: Is emulation really what we should be pushing for in this post-HD era? Surely we should instead be pushing for games consoles to be easily hacked, so that we can get access to them and pirate games to our hearts delights. A small investment in a PS3 or PS4 here and there, with unlimited games for free after that.

Are you telling me that your main reason for emulating isn't just to pirate any game you want?
>>
>>161372617
That's because at resolutions below 8k, they really CAN'T simulate shadow masks.
And at resolutions like 8k, the pixel density is so high that you really can't see the individual "phosphors" without zooming in really close (like when people take close-up photos of their CRT monitors), so everything kind of blends together anyway (like viewing a CRT monitor from an actual viewing distance).

So, although it's not very accurate at all, plain scanline shaders at 1080p at least look closer to what a CRT should look like than shadow mask shaders at the same resolution when viewed from a proper distance.

That being said, there really is (currently) no better way to have scanlines than with a proper CRT monitor.

You know what. Fuck it. This would be easily fixed if VC++ redist just properly installed, but instead it gets stuck in shit.

I am not installing linux and then reisntallingthe xboxone controller drivers and PCSX2 with god knows how many shit that could go wrong with a newbie like me.

These consoles won't get reversed/documented (vital to preservation) to the same extent 8/16-bit era consoles are in a hundred years, it's the matter of both complexity and security - good luck extracting private keys from modern crypto CPUs they contain

it's an immense and great resource, don't get me wrong, i'm just saying that it should be superfluous and only used by those that wish to adjust their emulation experience on a granular level and not have it be required reading for those who want to enjoy retro games on their pc.

You should use some kind of crt shader. Like lottes, geom or easymode. And then tweak it so it looks how you like it.

Godamn I really hate emulators just because they make me autistic with the amount of options they have with filters and shaders and other shit.

Should I just default everything and just play the game?
>>
>>161416871
Good models at the cost of object pop-in?

You mean pixellated textures obviously. DS doesn't do the 3-point filtering of an N64 to blur them, and the original game stretched small-ish textures across large areas trusting that they'd be blurred. I think much of the game was retextured but wherever they didn't do enough of it and at decent size (DS allows really big texture sizes compared to any 5th gen consoles FYI), it's very conspicuous.
>>
>>161417617
Use a stand alone and your options will be greatly limited
>>
So yeah, as far as I can tell, there's no way to rebind insert coin in MAME 1.79, making two player impossible since i can't map it to anything on the controller.

Why do you want both? 3DS can play DS games, and you can use DS flash cards in it.

New 3DS XL on a firmware version below 11.0 (or, worst case, below 11.2 - none ship with 11.2 yet) with a DS-mode flashcart (R4i Gold 3DS is the best one these days).

See http://reddit.com/r/3dshacks for details. Buy the console and a copy of "Freaky Forms Deluxe", and follow http://3ds.guide/ immediately. Don't update your console to 11.2 before finishing the guide under any circumstances.

Desmume's developer is actively hostile to the idea of fixing any Pokemon-related bugs. If an error is brought up in a Pokemon game he will refuse to fix it, and if any fixes happen it was because of fixes to issue that occur in other games. If new versions unexpectedly introduce issues in Pokemon those will also go unfixed.
>>
>>161425632

Such is life in emulation.

Most I can say is try lower block sizes in Desmume's dynamic recompiler settings or turn off dynamic recompiler entirely. If that doesn't fix it, don't know what else would.

>>
>>161425076
It is on desmume.
It's been like this for ages, and it's never once been looked into despite the bug reports.

>>161443374
I did a playthrough of HeartGold on stream using desmume, and these bugs would happen every so often. Sometimes after hours of playing, sometimes immediately.
The trigger is making the overworld refresh. Either by going through a door or by entering and exiting the bag menu. And it only seems to occur when outside as the game uses a 3D camera mode. That being said, going inside will not fix it. You have to save and reset, but at least you can still save when the graphics bug out.
