Why are ults so disproportionate in this game?

Karthus ult costs 100 mana and targets everyone on the map. Lux ult also costs 100 mana and fires a beam forward. Azir ult costs 100 mana and places a wall that acts as terrain and deters dashes. Why do they all cost 100 mana? I would think Karthus's would cost somewhere near 300 or 400, so he can't just let it out for a last hit at the end of a fight without metering himself or carefully watching his mana. Lucian's also costs 100.

Is that just, the thing? Everyone's ult always costs 100 mana or 100 of whatever resource they have? Why? Half of those don't even make sense, Lux and Syndra in particular are fucking stupid because they both have multiple other skills that cost MORE than 100 mana. Azir's Q costs 120 mana at max rank, but his ult still only costs 100? And 99% of the time the cooldown is low as fuck for the given effect anyway. So much of the fuckery in the game right now could be balanced by just making ults have actual costs, so you have to strategize instead of just mashing buttons whenever it's convenient. Imagine if Lux had to actually strategize with her ult instead of just blasting it down lane whenever it's off cooldown, or if Brand had to calculate when he could best use his ult instead of just firing it off indiscriminately whenever two or three people show up.

I just don't understand. Was it always like this, or did mana costs make sense once upon a time? Why does the concept of resource management seem so vile and detestable that they'd just make it completely unimportant in the grand scheme of things? I don't even want to get into mana-less champs like Katarina or Riven, whose abilities for some reason have BETTER effects and lower cooldowns than their mana-using equivalents.

They realized that low mana costs and low cooldowns are more fun that actual strategy (see urf mode). Ulting more often for less mana is more fun and satisfying, so they balanced it that way. Riot has deemed that regular abilities aren't as fun as ulties thus their mana costs are more normal.

Either way mana costs are too low and don't offer very much in terms of strategy, however they are more fun so I personally prefer it that way.

Riot wanted to streamline everything starting about a year back. I'm pretty sure they never provided an actual reason (or at least, not one that made sense), but you can go looking through late S4/S5 patch notes if you want to find out why. I think the main driver behind the decision was that ults are a champ's "identity" so they should always be able to use them, regardless of the varying costs of their other abilities. I can completely relate to the Lux example, it doesn't make any sense at all that her snare costs 100+ mana to cast, but her ult is only 100 and yet still has an extremely low cooldown compared to other champs. It's not like it matters though, since Morello's is the biggest mana item right now and it gives CDR out the ass.

CDR isn't the problem at all, how its been handled has.

Logically you should be trading power for CDR. If I wanted 40% CDR on my abilities, I should have less damage than if I had 0.

However, since Riot are geniuses and they put that shit onto literally every item, late-game becomes URF mode practically so it isn't unsual for some champions to have a champion use their ultimate twice in the same teamfight. Yeah it makes the game more fun but that is something to look into in terms of balance that Riot seems to easily forget.

You're half right, but missing the other half;

Ults are scaled for Teamfights. If they cost 700 Mana and youre not Kassadin or Kog'Maw, then you're going to have to itemize specifically in order to use your ult after one or two rotations.
Meanwhile, QWEs are scaled for laning.
Extremely high mana costs are usually the balance levers for skills that mandate having a shit load of strength because theyre either useless or broken, by design. Lux's Q and bomb are good examples.

So for gameplay health, having Ultimate abilities be relatively cheap, only needing to watch timing or literally running OUT of mana completely rather than gauging your mana pool at all times makes planning and actually using your ult at all much easier.
But if a skill with much less power (say, Karthus' E or Lux's bomb) has a similarly low mana cost, even if it had a long cooldown it'd be too oppressive in lane.
That said,I'm still waiting for riot to make all abilities except maybe Ults have flat mana costs or decreasing, NOT scaling upward. Give champs and items a bit less mana to compensate, but mana costs going from 50 to 90 or even 130 every 6 seconds is bullshit. What's the point of getting more mana/lvl if your mana costs rise with it

Well, thats how they itemized ADC at least.

if you want CDR on ADC you have to get Cleaver, which isn't good on a lot of ADCs and has a lower AD than some other items. It also provides zero attack speed and half of a passive. One might even argue the Health portion is wasted, unless you have some other form of defense as ADCs are too squishy for it to matter one bit.
So no Cleaver means you have to get something like Essence reaver.
So you can get Tons of Damage™ and tons of CDR along with near-infinite mana sustain...
But no attack speed.
Speaking of Tons of Damage, you can get CDR and Attack speed from exactly one item -
That gives a whopping 30 AD.
And zero crit now thanks to the reworked build path.

There is no way to build crit, attack speed and CDR all at the same time, efficiently. And even if you did, you'd have much less AD than a Merc/ER/IE/BT/PD/Boots build.
And yes, that build DOES have all the stats, but doesnt give everything until you've amassed so much gold you shouldve won the game about 40 minutes ago

I've straight-up uninstalled this game in the past because I got fucking tired of watching Jayce build black cleaver and youmuu's and launch 500-damage magic missiles halfway down lane. I don't fucking care that you can just pick champs that benefit from low cooldowns and spam back at them, I'd rather have a game that takes two brain cells to play at a decent level than dealing with welfare diamonds picking Sona and Rengar and just melting everything on the map without a second thought because Riot enables them to do it.

That recall is actually his teammate's ability. It sends back targeted ally to the fountain after a few seconds. It requires a fair amount of coordination and timing since the hook has land as the timer on the skill hits zero. It's not something the average players can do.
