Bought the Master Collection today, literally never played total war before
Started up Medieval II, decided on a short, easy difficulty campaign to get used to the flow of gameplay.

It's pretty fun so far, I'm up to turn 25 now. Is it normal for a lot of my lords to have taken up Pagan Magicians into their retinues though? We're a very pious people otherwise, two of my priests are cardinals and I have a church in every settlement.

Also maybe you have too many elite units? I find vampire counts be best at low cost armies, making large battles happen, so you can easily recruit new armies using the raise army function.

If you vassalise someone post realm divide, they won't hate you, and will trade with you. Keep that as an option. If you want to minimise losses, I'd say put a single cannon in each of your armies. They'll walk slower, but the AI will be forced into being aggressive in every fight (even if you're the aggressor on the campaign map). Basically, no more AI hill camps. Now you can be the hill camper. This means your tercos get the best chances to fire.
