/egg/ - Engineering Games General - Formerly /svgg/

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

RIP edition
previous ded: >>160688157

The thread is dedicated to all games about building machines and systems out of blocks, in space or otherwise. Also, all these games are ded. Only ded games may join, otherwise they must have their own thread.

WebM for retards:
>gitgud.io/nixx/WebMConverter.git

List of currently known and vaguely not dead /egg/ games (this list is not fully inclusive and if you think a game might belong here, feel free to ask):
>Algodoo
>Avorion
>Besiege
>Chode - Children of Ded Earf
>Empyrion - Galactic Survival
>Factorio
>From the Depths
>Homebrew - Vehicle Sandbox
>Infinifactory
>KOHCTPYKTOP: Engineer of the People
>Machinecraft
>REM
>Robocraft
>Robot Arena 2
>Scrap Mechanic
>SHENZEN I/O
>Space Engineers
>StarMade

Games that are definitely not /egg/:
>Minecraft
>The general that quite literally cannot be named. The Mexican scam artist one. With the shitposters. Fuck off.
>Hearthstone, found in the hearthstone general, /hsg/, not in this general.

Information about these games, such as where to get them if they're not on steam, trailers, /egg/ conquered/hosted servers, and other shit can be found in this pad:

The only thing that's linked together and working properly is the 4 full adders in the middle. 2 disconnected registers to the right to store the 2 inputs, with 1 on the left to store the output (input works but it doesn't store anything yet)

I plan to use my regular punched cards jazz, which are just rectangles with separate geoms on them which impact reading rods. Each "card" to read into the machine will be 6 bits. First 2 bits determine what to do, as per the pink box in the middle. The next 4 is the number, if needed. Can be just left blank for clearing/adding operations.

I figure I'll do a little microprogram for each component. The adder already works, one pull of a rod and it adds the two numbers and outputs into the left register, but I still need to make a cam to make it store it.

etc etc it's like 6am and I haven't slept yet

Okay so other than the wings, these two planes are almost identical. Same fuselage, same engine power, same maximum elevator deflection. The one with swept wings is perhaps very slightly lighter, since I added three steering hinges for the retractable landing gear but also removed two ballast blocks, four bracers and made two ballast blocks at the front lighter to compensate for the center of lift moving to the rear

The one one the left loses its wings at around 11G, while the one with swept wings rips at 19. Why does making the wings swept increase their resistance to overload?

Spengos is not shit if you play with everything on low, with a high tier rig, and without planets.
Starmade is not shit as far as i know.

You can do that in both, from a small figher to a capital class destroyer.
But i think starmade handles the framerate better.

Built two botes
one is slow as hell and armed with single CRAM 390mm with few explosive and fragmenter ammo boxes
other one is a bit faster with 2x3 missile launchers, mounted horizontally one on each broadside
both are below 5k resources, and meant as expendable trash for enemies to prioritize over bigger ships

So I've recently actually figured out how tank treads work and I've been experimenting with them lately.

Pictured was the test for my first triangle-style tread system, it's pretty good... at least, it would be if I wasn't dumb. I messed up on the design early on, and I didn't want to rebuild it from the ground up just to see if the system works. It does, and it can move at a pretty clip. I'm certain it'd have much better traction on uneven surfaces if I raise the chassis more, though that'll require more testing.

Now the question is, what should I do for weapons?

Is there a way to do land vehicles in FTD? I know there's a tank tread mod out there, now I just need land for it.

Dammit I wanna build a fucking STORMHAMMER. It's a battleship that got so goddamn angry it grew treads, what's not to love?

Not true. You can run machinecraft on a crap GPU, single player or blocking/hiding bigger creations in multi and with graphics settings down (its got a pretty wide selection of graphics changes nowadays) but it'll still run up your GPU temp to play.

If you collide with a ~7000 block machine on a crap GPU god help you

I'd actually recommend Infinifactory. When I had my older shitty graphics card I never heard it run up, and the game ran really smoothly. I suspect most of it's "physics" all run on the CPU as it's all tick based movement to integer positions.

How do i make an actually good railgun in ftd
>>
>>161062027
You don't. Nick has managed to make railguns completely and utterly useless in every circumstance.
>>
>>161062027
Are you making a hybrid or a rail-only gun? What's wrong with your current setup.

I only learned recently that if you don't use any gunpowder casings you don't need any cooling units which allows you to fit more railgun chargers.
>>
>>161063331
And guess what, under Nick's divine decree, is used up by engines to power up those railgun chargers?
Even more materials than used for plain gunpowder, at least a few hundred times more.
>>
>>161063428
Does anyone besides you care? I'm guessing most people get too distracted by blowing shit up and having fun to lose any sleep over trivial spreadsheet stuff.
>>

>>
>>161063331

>>
>>161063939
Just saying your massive nick/ftd butthurt seems to revolve around shit nobody cares about or sometimes straight up misinformation.

>>161064023
Not effective in what way? If the rate of fire is too low experiment with # of barrels and autoloaders until its all in harmony with its chargers.

You could be using the wrong ammo. HE is obviously the most fun but it is shit at killing metal enemies. There's no logical reason to use anything but inertia frags afaik

Also you might be running the % charge needlessly high and the accuracy boost too low.
>>
>>161064259
>shit nobody cares about
>currently being cared about by two other people while you complain loudly about it, then start pumping "trivial spreadsheet stuff" all over one

>>161064023
Unless Nick decided to rebalance railguns (again) since last time I tried railguns, they were only effective against extremely fast craft with the first shot. Considering the fastest you can go is 155 now, that application is moot. Otherwise, they're only useful for that accuracy boost.
And as far as my experiments went, I have never seen any pure railgun cartridge at 500mm diameter faster than a gunpowder equivalent, at any power, at any charge. Doesn't help that they cost exactly the same as normal gunpowder cartridges, and you're wasting a whole lot of energy on them to boot.
Railguns are only good if you want to make a tiny bullet go REALLY fucking fast, and even then, Nick's retarded fucking "effective range" will kick it in the balls before actually reaching any target.

Increased the backwards sweep by 10 degrees and now they rip at 28G I had to dive from like 2.5 km to reach 1400 kph in order to cause that amount of overload. Also tested forward swept wings and they ripped at around 6

I probably should have mentioned that the overload is measured by that long pointy block on the nose, so maybe the G forces aren't the same there than at the back where the swept wings are located. But still, it's obvious that more wing sweep = more resistance to G forces

Well of course, the wings are braced in the original design. I just removed the braces to test how much overload they could take before snapping

The first design also had one fatal flaw in that both wings were braced to each other at the tips, so if ne wing hit a mountain or whatever the aileron on the other wing would snap and start turning freely, making the plane unflyable

Also the variant with braces could be destroyed by overload but that happened at like 45-50G and at that point the cause of death was more the fuselage splitting in half than the wings snapping off

Radar guided missiles, this is an older version, i have added ligh alloy to the sides of the "turret" since apparently they don't account for the main ship blocks when calculating the radar profile but they behave like a completely indipendent object.
Spamming small ships with a gun on them is always good but not really efficent, yo ushould try to spam your 15k ship.
Starting on easy to make up a strategy is something you should do if it's your first time, then play on normal once you get a grip on the game.

Trying to make a small plane I made fly and engage enemies correctly in from the depths is one of the most painful experience I've ever had.

Either I make it fly high and its front facing high RPM cannons can't aim downward well enough to hit the target, or I make it fly low and it instantly crashes when it tries to turn or gets hit by every projectile that targets it. Plus now I found out that my guns are so low caliber they might as well not shoot at all, but anything of higher caliber sends the plane flying randomly due to recoil, even with a shitload of recoil dampeners.

I've tried missiles but the entire plane wobbles so much by the time the missiles fire the plane wobbled and sent them into space or straight into the ocean.

I'll stick to helicopters and boats, fuck this.

Only snap to grid, as far as I know. You can change the grid base though, so that might help. By zooming in you get progressively smaller graduations which will help with measurements.

also

So, has anyone tested the three spongos MP branches yet?

I think the important tests to perform are various moving-object tests, simspeed/"chunkloading" tests, effects-of-lag tests, and maybe moving part testing.

I think I've still got him on Steam.

Anyways, ships will need to be designed to test an engineer's ability to walk around on a moving object in the following environments:

>Planetary gravity

>Artificial gravity (ideally, have every angle of artificial gravity relative to momentum covered, and have spaces to transition between gravity fields)

>Zero-G (This wouldn't be walking, but it'd be more of a sustained collision test.)

We'd also need vessels to test rotors and pistons (both stationary and mobile variants), some large laggy ship, a TBM, and other simspeed breakers.

It happened when I lowered the density of the whole thing, before it was just stretching too much and I thought that having it lighter would help.
Maybe I'll make it all fuckheavy so it will sink in the ground instead.
>>
>>161120071
Ahh, makes sense. Density acts weirdly. Best not to go too low unless you're using them as purely cosmetic pieces. The default is normally good, with 15-30kg/m2 for high impact pieces.

Paradoxically a higher density will make it sit on the ground better. It stops geoms clipping at high pressures.

adder with register algodoo.webm
2MB, 1200x490px
Managed to get the adder inputting into the 4 bit memory on the left. The memory has its own cam which pulls out a latch, reads the input, and latches it into a new position if input = 1. Once it's stored I can reset the adder. The 4 horizontal rods on the upper left (unfinished) can later read out the memory if I want to use it somewhere else.

I'm just doing it manually with key-presses at the moment. Later on it'll be automated so it runs a lot smoother.

Gonna work on a display so I can read it properly, and after that I'm going to duplicate the register to store the input, so I don't have to manually set the numbers to be added together.

this well and all, but hardly anything revolutionary. many of the shapes you would want to make with 3D welding are possible with casting or milling, both of which are orders of magnitude faster and cheaper. the only real benefit to 3D welding/printing is that you can toss in a file in a computer and have the robot print something with no prep work, whereas milling and casting both require some serious preparation

even if you wanted to make something that's impossible to make in one piece with traditional methods, you're likely serving a niche market and even then basically anything can be made by assembling pieces traditionally anyways meaning you're only ever going to use this for prototyping or ART, just like every other kind of 3D printing invented so far

It's actually more like 2x3 blocks of space required around the camera, since you need two rotors and room for them to turn.

You can swap to small blocks once you put down the first rotor, unless we're talking about small shaps, for those there's nothing you can do.
The smallest setup would be using one of those large-small adapters mods. They're pretty low, about 1 small block.
But they look hideous on the outside of a ship, and there isn't a tall variant that can be put along the other armor blocks.

I've been playing the sandbox mode in From the Depths for a while now. I feel pretty competent when building small craft. My shit is stupidly efficient when I look at cost/ass kicked; but I can't for the life of me seem to make large things that function well. Everything I've made that works well is tiny in cost and size. My gunship is 43k, my photon cannon ship is 35k, and my sub is 15k. Once I get large it just feels like my stuff melts too fast to just about anything.

I've looked at some other people's work and the AI stuff, but I must be missing some secret of large construction.

>>>extract oxygen from ice
We've had the tech to do this for a very long time, probably the hardest part is building something to compress the oxygen out to store it in tanks.

>>161159005
>>can build pocket sized nuclear reactor
you can build pretty damn small nuclear reactors, so long as you enrich stuff a lot, and don't have any shielding, or power generation turbines....

Now what really gets me about spengies are the ores and materials. Let's take for instance gravel, the most common and most useless material in the game.

IRL stone has large amounts of oxygen, silicon, iron, aluminum, and magnesium. Shit, silicon and oxygen are in the double digits weight percent wise.

But how do we get silicon and oxygen in spengies? We go searching around for ice and SILICON ORE! And we do practically NOTHING with the abundant stone we have.

Now I tell you what, we have a process that works today for refining stone into oxygen, silicon, and metals: molten oxide electrolysis(MOE). Now MOE is a lot like your classic water electrolysis, except instead of water you use molten lava. You apply electricity to the lava separating the oxygen from silicon, iron, and whatever else the stone is made of.

This is currently being investigated for use in space because other traditional methods of refining metals don't work in space:

I'm not sure off the top of my head, but probably my Flunkwalker in Robocraft, back before flying got killed.
I loved it because I saw the Sunwalker designs going around the general when I started playing, and slowly made my rocket sled thing (wheels had a speed limit, so no wheels meant maximum fast) into a flyer over time, and it became a fantastic dogfighter.

Even if I tried building something like it again nowadays, the homing weapons and changed flying physics would make it obsolete.

is another word for a mixture of molten silicates. Molten oxide electrolysis is also known as magma electrolysis

Damn I almost want to mod this thing in now.

Although it might be better to make something like a mass spectrometer that let's you get everything from stone. By breaking apart stone into its individual atoms and passing them through a giant fucking mass spectrometer one can get pure elements and isotopes out.

It would take huge amounts of power and huge amounts of stone to obtain basically everything. You'd get decent amounts of common stuff like metal, but smaller amounts of rarer stuff. Oh and it would be an end game item because one would need HUGE amounts of gold and silver for the magnets.

We actually did this to make the atomic bomb:

that's really good, i especially like the way you produce the 3 bars. you can save several blocks+footprint by using a sensor pointing downwards above the belt and wiring that up directly. If i'm judging thingcs correclty 6 wire pieces should be enough.
Personally i only scored 190 cycles on that level.

Portable? You mean Modular? If so, yeah, 4.4 has Modular building.

although I fear you may have a misconception about what modular buildings are going to be like.

they are strictly base-buildings that are locked to a gridframe without the necessity to physically link them together and are still considered a single entity, plus side is you can build several things and link them together afterwards.

You can see the evolution from left to right, except the black boat which was 3rd.

With a single hull, the lasers were great but it couldn't handle the recoil from the AC. Replacing the ac with missiles solved the stability problem but the narrow hull limited the accuracy of the in-body broadside lasers.

The extra width of the 3-hull black boat increased the accuracy of the in-body and allowed the use of high recoil acs, unfortunately the turrets reduced the length and accuracy of the front laser

The white 3-hull ship solved the lack of close range firepower by replacing the railguns with triple canon acs but still lacked the main laser accuracy of the 2nd boat. The big and small 3-hull white ships are scale-ups and scale downs of this design which downscale or remove the lasers.

The blue ship is a different branch off the black ship and solved the laser accuracy problem with a double barrel forward laser that runs down either side of the (thin) front turrets. since the ship can fly, the angled hull allowed the use of 3m mantlets to shoot downwards when in broadside.

Next is a slighty smaller ship with the double barrel long range laser front end + increased width to allow some triple cannon acs in between them, that should be pretty much the final front end design. The sideways double barrel broadside lasers will carry over too. Laser turrets, acs, or rail guns for the back corners is a tough call and there will be a great focus on underside weaponry.

physicians get out
Have you considered that there might be a few barriers that prevent one in doing that?
Just to humor you, imagine you've taken a chunk out of a random landfill full of mixed garbage (household stuff, electronic waste, dead animals, garden refuse, etc.).
Now, ignoring any difficulties you'd have in actually doing so, you manage to ionize this mixture and send it through a calutron.

You've ionized well over a thousand different compounds of wildly varying composition, each of which can possibly fragment into a dozen more unique ions, each fragment occurring in varying ratio to other fragments.
This means you have hundreds of thousands ions, several of which are bound to have near-identical mass/charge ratio, meaning you'd need an even larger deflection arc to separate said ions.
Now, ignoring this HUGE barrier, let's say you end up with buckets of pure elements.

How much would you earn from selling oxygen, carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen (which would be the four primary elements derived from organic refuse)?
What do you think the cost of operation would be? The massive electromagnets used to separate the elements need electricity to work. That's why they're called ELECTROmagnets.
For operation, consider that the Calutrons used by the Manhattan Porject cost nearly 3 billion USD (modern equivalent) to keep running for just a single year - going by the wiki page previous anon linked.

tl;dr
We don't have practically useful tech to "purify" every piece of waste.

Because it's cheaper to just bury the waste and dig up more raw materials. Recycling takes energy, and the Earth is very large.
A sufficiently cheap energy source would likely change that. Something like hydrogen-hydrogen fusion, or one of those perpetual motion machines you see on Youtube actually working.

Depends which line in the wiki page you go by.
If you read a bit further up
>[...] the Royal Society of Chemistry holds as a serious risk that indium supplies may be exhausted within a century.
>[...] the Indium Corporation, the largest processor of indium, claims [...] the long-term supply of indium is sustainable, reliable, and sufficient to meet increasing future demands.

Let's just say it's 14 years or worse. Great, there's demand for recycling.
However, you still need to convince people to not use separation through other means (chemical most likely), as opposed to a calutron.
Once that's done, you need to deal with the previously mentioned problems of doing so.

I already want to tear everything down and remake a factory, but I thought I might as well learn a bit more before doing that. You didn't answer my question though. Can you feed different colored science to different labs (for example, a series of labs for red, one for green, one for blue...) or do you have to feed all colors of science to a lab for it to do research (assuming the research requires the four colors)

Because if yes, my current plan is 2x2 or 2x3 main battery, offensive lazor, 4/6/7x2 as secondaries and 3x4 for AA defense.
>>

>>
>>161246991
Yeah, there are connector blocks that connect through turret bases, but they're oddly tricky to set up for lasers. That, I suck at setting them up properly or I'm missing something whenever I do it though.

Either way, you still won't fit all of that on there if you want the guns to be effective and not shoot at each other. Seriously. Increase your base size. If there's one thing I've noticed it's that if you're building WW2-style ships, take any size from that era and double it if you want to reach even a fraction of the turret density of that time. Or enjoy peashooters.

there are several concrete blocks mods, some are more balanced than others from what I can see.
Never actually used any, but I used the concrete tool mod, it's a godsend to build pillars that dogs can't bite into.

one mod that I remember out of my head
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=303959338

the concrete tool
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=396679430

the stone crusher to get ores out of stone
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=509687242

there's also the desolver which removes stone, you can find it in the warbros serb mod collectioon.

Cheers man.
I'm planning to use two's complement for subtraction, though I'm still having a bit of trouble getting my head around it. Good news is the only additional stuff I need is a multiplexer and a not gate for each adder, both of which as easy as pie with rod logic. It means I can toggle between addition and subtraction with 1 bit.

I don't know enough about computer science to understand an ALU. Pic related is one some guy designed with rod logic, from http://www.halfbakedmaker.org/blog/574

I might have a go at it later, but at the moment I don't want to duplicate anything I can't understand.

Ha Ha ok so heres the deal-
You go to the sea on the corner of the map, there are arches along the wall and on one of them there is a bench, you press e on it and you get teleported, and you have to very quickly do this sequence.
You get into a secret room that cant be noclipped into, but has nothing interesting in it.
its boring but fun
