How could a patch that only added controller support have this much impact on my performance? I've lost like 20 FPS.

Also, why did they make the text smaller for most menus and HUD elements?

Are Psi Soldiers worthwhile in XCOM2 Vanilla?

It feels like they are a pain in the ass to get to and space is already limited.
I'm trying them out and I had to choose between a psi lab or a proving ground this month. The guy has been useful though.

Also are laboratories good in your opinion? I like them by virtue of it making having just one or two scientists workable.

Hey lads, been playing this game recently to see if it runs better than launch, and it does!

I got a shitload of voicepacks and am in the process of making an A-Team and a B-Team.

I rushed PSI labs before I built anything else and have so far been doing pretty well. My psi op guy is decently trained, and he feels like he brings a lot of crowd control+oh shit buttons to the table. Probably my best operative.

My next favorite is the Ranger. High risk high reward playstyles. If you do it right and get lucky, he can really save your teams ass. I gave his ass an exo suit for added mobility and defense, seeing as how he's gonna be in the shit more often than not.

Demolitions are a solid pick as well. Being able to suppress/demolish enemies and their cover is very useful. I usually bring two of these motherfuckers with me.

Specialists are damn good. I keep one on the team always. Being able to hack enemy mechs and turn them against each other is a great asset. I have a "Field Medic"class mod, so I dont use my specialists for healing.

I haven't fucked with snipers/gunslingers at all. I heard gunslingers are god tier, but I haven't put the effort to get one leveled. Am I missing out?

For those of you who use the AS VAL/VSS Vintorez mod, would it be detrimental to you if the textures were improved, but the option to color it was removed? I simply cannot figure out how to make the MSK texture look so that I can keep the improved look, yet also keep coloring, so at this point it's either custom colors or a reskin.

So you're using the blue channel of the MSK texture for something else instead of the color? Well, you could just make the colorable parts of the model use a separate material and just make a separate MSK texture for that material.

The colorable part of the model wouldn't benefit from whatever it is you're doing with the blue channel but the rest of the gun would.

Alternatively you could look at E3245's expanded materials or whatever, maybe there's one there that you can use without sacrificing the color.

Alien Hunters is great, you can tell how shit someone is based on how much they bitch about it. Missions is alright and rulers are fun to fight against though they can really ruin your mission
Shen's Last Gift adds a fun really fun mission but SPARKs leave much to be desired.

I have a really, really hard time playing Xcom 2 without save scumming. Trying to play an honest game in a game that is so RNG based and blatantly cheats is just so trying.

How do you do it? Do you just lose the game and get a game over after days of trying like, very often? Do you very, very rarely achieve success? Alien Hunters: 7/10. New mission, new weapons, new mechanics. I like it, and the aesthetics of the new items don't bother me (except for the Shadowkeeper pistol).

Shen's Last Gift: 9/10. New mission with good plot, big stompy robots. Pretty fucking great.

Alien Ruler: 5/10, horrible, horrible aesthetics. Rulers are pretty dumb mechanically and the weapons are mediocre.

Shens Last Gift: 8/10, better aesthetics and is actually a decent addition.

Overall: 6/10, you arent missing anything if you dont use them.

I once tried to see if I can finish a mission by using stealth. I reloaded the mission every time when i was seen and I noticed that no matter where I went the ayys allways intercepted me.
They did their usual routes for a few turns, than started walking towards my squad until they found them.

I like both. XCOM had the better art direction for sure, but XCOM2 is a beautiful game just in terms of pure graphics, which was a breath of fresh air when 99% of all TBS games look like steaming shit. Both are great for different reasons.

Figure out how to do console commands. You can give and take away perks during the tactical missions, though be aware, any stat bonuses associated with taking that perk will not be given using this method.

If I were you though, I would just deal with it. Hybrid engineers are actually pretty useful, he may not be full optimal, but he isn't gonna be dead weight at all, specially early and mid-game. And learning how to use the console commands in long war is so annoying and counter-intuitive, I forgot how to do it everytime.

Assume that XCOM never got past ballistics. Also assume that aliens threw everything they had at them immediately, instead of starting out at five sectoids and slowly ramping up. Canonically XCOM lost like a month into the first game, which means the Commander held his ground for a full thirty days with nothing but terrestrial assault rifles and swears to hold off Sectopods, Ethereals and Muton Elites. Shit, makes sense the Resistance in XCOM2 seem to worship him so much.

Frankly, they've been rather vague on exactly how far XCOM got. We know they only ever shot down two UFOs (the first one, and the Avenger), and never managed to upgrade their equipment significantly. However, they must have been active long enough for the Commander to establish their excellence, and for XCOM in general to become a symbol of the human resistance. There's hints that both MEC and Psi research were at least off the ground before the fall.

So the answer is "meh, headcanon that shit".

XCOM losing never bothered me, because it meant the campaigns that I won remained as victories, and the ones I lost got a second chance, so to speak. Alternate timelines, whatever. All the same, I would love it if X3 continued on from the timeline where XCOM won. Probably not gonna happen, though, since X2's ending is a lot easier to work with.

Real talk, I've never understood what the big difference is supposed to be. X1 has bighuge weapons, X2 has bighuge weapons. X1 goes from ballistics and kevlar to energy weapons and power armor, so does X2. The alien design is a mixture of creepy and goofy in both games. The outrageous stuff in X2 is DLC and entirely optional. Hell, the fact that X2's male operatives are normal-sized and not total beefcakes is a plus in my book. The one thing X2 did worse are the helmets past tier 1, which I never used for this reason.

Build variety, mostly. There are tons of very real and impactful choices you can make in LW and even EU in the base layer, and importantly, most of them were very viable. Vanilla XCOM2 feels a lot more linear and it suffers for it.

What the image doesn't bring up is how restricted XCOM2's classes feel by comparison EU had restricted skill trees for sure but XCOM2 managed to be a lot worse - instead of having four classes with some flavor choices to be made in how they play, there are four classes subdivided into two classes each. Your sniper is either a gunslinger or a sniper - no inbetween. Your ranger is either a stealth ranger or a melee ranger - no inbetween. That always bugged me to no end. Instead of having one decision be made every time they rank up, you already commit to a build in the beginning of the tree, because the perk trees are laid out in such a way that all of the "related" perks are useless without the synergy of those higher up in the tree. EU was a lot better at this than X2. Long War blew both of them out of the water, making shifting from LW to X2 feel like coming out of 'nam and into kindergarten.

Again, I like X2. I'm willing to wager I'm one of the people in the thread who has played it the most - it still feels like so much of the goofy magic that was EU, that whole "brave new world"-feel when you looked at the foundry and saw all those projects or carefully considering perks was lost in trying to make a unique sequel. That opinion is mostly rose tinted goggles, I know, but I still find myself going back to EU in spite of the mod support and superior graphics of X2, which does imply something is seriously wrong.

Other reasons off the top of my head that EU is a more fun game is the fantastic soundtrack, the eerie sound design (loud, clanky footsteps and aliens growling in the distance), visual design that matched the comic-book goofy gray man vibe of OldCOM with a very modern and unsettling take on aliens with some body horror ripped straight out off /x/-alium pastas and more memorable characters.

He was from my first EW run.
John Johnson

Due to his funny generated name, I made him look as clown-like as possible. Gave him pink armor and everything.

Then Newfoundland hit. I went in not knowing what would happen. Then the 'lids hit.
One by one my soldiers fell. Slowly I got closer to the ship. Nearing the end, only Johnson was left. A lone sniper.

He activated the signal and ran. Ran like the wind. As more and more 'lids spawned, the gap grew smaller. But he pressed on. After all, he could run faster with a double-move than they could with a single move, so they could never attack him.

Just a few more squares till the Evac, he was utterly surrounded. And I mean utterly. All 8 squares around him were filled with a lid. He couldn't move.

It was at that moment I realised he wore a Skeleton Suit, with a grappling hook. He grappled on nearest roof, and made it to the evac with not a single square of movement to spare.

He ended up to be my standard soldier in every single mission. Even became my destined Psi saviour in the final mission.

He started out as a joke, but became my biggest badass

Threat Assesment, for sure. In XCOM2 enemies shouldn't be getting any actions against you anyway so covering fire will be wasted 99% of the time, while you can at least use threat assessment to grant overwatch to a unit that's already dashed or something.

If you look at his viewcount progression ever since his decline and eventual drought on XCOM content it's night and day - used to pull 40k+ viewers on hour long videos, now he barely breaks ten on 30 minute videos. There are still bugs lingering around from launch. The worst being that LOS can occasionally break on certain buildings (I think this happens during level generation). Just be mindful if you can see and shoot through a certain wall/roof/floor that the AI can too.

There's also performance drops when a lot of particle effects are being used - fire/smoke/explosions/rubble. Although this can be mitigated somewhat with ini tweaks.

I'm thinking more like if action points were reintroduced but you took out the contrivance of counting your points to perform certain actions in a turn.

Mobility would just determine who takes an action first that "turn"

So with 22 mobility you'd go before someone with 12 and you'd go twice before someone with 10 until everyone on the map takes all their available actions then the "turn" would end and it would start over.

Yup, in my modded L/I run I noticed that the balance I have is an alright level of magnificent - for every level EXCEPT Gatecrasher which is virtually impossible to even complete as all of the pods have at least five members of which two are always drones, which the four rookies just can't deal with realistically. For that reason I start with specialists right from the get go.

The mod which lets you do that conveniently also lets you make sure the exact characterpool donutsteels you want get picked and assigned their specific class, which means you can customize them cosmetically according to their actual role. Perfect for muh autism

Don't use the cinematic version, the modder says it looks better and it does more to change stuff but it feels like it washes out color way too harshly and it gives a sizable performance hit for no benefit over the old version with which I've had margin of error-worthy performance loss. I'm nowhere near qualified enough to say whether a ReShade should or should not affect the performance of a game. I mean, it does change the way the game looks, and the one you've linked there actually makes it look like the texture quality is higher than it is.

All I do know is that it's marketed as a low-hit alternative to stuff like ENB or whatever. Then again, the installation folders for ReShade do contain shaders and shit, so who even knows? If it does impact performance, I'd like to downgrade my version. Not worth it when the framerate is already spotty.

So fucking much this, the customization combined with UI modding and general quality of life improvements make LW feel so clunky by comparison. Before I didn't have a reference point so LW was just LW, now it feels so very dated. If we're close and there's a flashbang available, then Lancer > Viper > Sectoid. Because a flash will nullify all of their most dangerous abilities for a turn you're really not in a hurry, but the negative effects of lancers and vipers once that flash expires are immediate wounds/potentially kills on their turn which makes them a priority.

That's in fairly stark contrast to the 1 turn delay until Sectoids debuffs/mind controls REALLY start to affect you, giving you more time to contain that problem once he actually gets an MC off than if a Lancer were to dash and crit your star ranger into unconsciousness for the remainder of the mission, or a Viper apply a -30 aim penalty/drag somebody out of cover and into a fresh pod/in other ways guarantee a wound. So, L > V > S

If it's up close and I don't have a flash, then same deal. L > V > S. Lancers are the most urgent because they unconscious/instagib your dudes, vipers come after because poision and drag guarantee a wound, and Sectoids come last because their primary threat is always delayed by 1 turn giving you more time to react than the former ones.

If we're far away and I don't have a flash, Sectoids become an immediate concern because as anon said you can't guarantee that even with the extra turn you'll be able to flank and kill them. That makes it Sectoid > Lancer > Viper, because IF the Sectoids MC is uncontested in spite of that extra and are allowed to dash away for a turn then boy are we in shit.

If we're far away and I have a flash, it's Lancer > Sectoid > Viper. You'll still want to make sure you kill the Sectoid almost instantly, but the flash gives you time as you can just deny his mind control/zombie/whatever by flashing him which keeps his cooldown on it for a while. That makes the Lancer a better target as out of all the three he's by far and away the most likely to instagib someone.

Guy that made the Solid Snake voice pack here. I figured out what I did wrong with that one and now I can make a proper high quality one. I was working on a Rose of Sharron Cassidy voice pack, that was pretty huge, but I kind of dropped it at about 60% finished because of life and sheeit.

There are several good tutorials on how to make a voice pack that you can follow along with, search on youtube, I had no idea how to mod or use the SDK, but after those tutorials, making a soundpack is trivial.

On another topic, for anyone who likes XCOM2 and is in the market for a monitor - don't buy 1440p unless you've got a monster of a rig. Seriously. Sure the monitor looks great in general and the novelty of it is just like the first time you play a twitch shooter with a 144hz screen, but I'm two months in and beginning to realize that until I invest in a new(er) graphics card, I'm fucked. I'm used to the sharpness of 2560x1440 now and can't settle for 1080p in virtually any game, but that means I get like 30-40% less performance across the board.

Now, in most games that's fine because -30% still puts me comfortably above 60fps on ultra settings, but not XCOM2. Not by a long shot. Because it's so demanding/poorly optimized I have to live with like 50-40fps if I want it to look good, whilst when I was used to 1080p because I didn't have a reference point it was smooth flying at 80fps. Fuck.

FreeSync does alleviate it a bit but not nearly enough to compensate. This sucks.

Yeah, but for now drones keep fucking me over before campaigns can really take off. I gave them some more mobility and keep getting 3/4 guys stunned for my trouble every fucking turn, but I don't just want to add difficulty by just stacking pods with fifty ADVENT troopers like last time because that's boring. If you'd like help then editing rulers is hella tricky afaikdue to DLC files working in a different way than base game .inis (at least they did when I tried it), but armor of enemies is pretty easy. Which units you want to edit specifically?

Aliens all have their individual stat blocks in XComCharacterStats.ini. The rulers use separate inis in the appropriate DLC gamedata folder.

there is the frost grenade. there is the stun crossbow. there is stasis. there are flame grenades. there are acid grenades

To answer without /v/-tier rageposting:

You aren't missing much if you don't get the DLC.
The first one is simply cosmetics, and desu they're shit. I don't get why they'd make that a DLC when you give full mod support and know damn well everyone is gonna churn out cosmetic mods that'll be better than anything you'll make.

The second one, Alien Hunters, can be a fun new way of playing the game, but personally I feel like the new items are too OP when playing against normal enemies. The Ayy Bosses themselves really suck to fight on normal missions, especially timed ones. I find that they don't mesh well with the rest of the game, the intro-mission being an exception as it was an environment tailored for the Viper King fight.

Shen's Last Gift gives you MECs, but while I like playing them, they're simply too underpowered in the late-game.

The only truly worthwhile thing in the last 2 DLC are the story-like missions, which I wish they did more. I kind of miss the councilmissions of EU, which had a lil flavor on them

Overall, it's simply not worth your shekels
