this general is a breeding ground for miscreants who never became relevant themselves, so rather than trying to lift themselves up to mediocrity, tries to bring everybody down to their level. a putrid, fetid, steaming collection of nobodies who hit their peak around high school and struggle to now reach the already unbelievably low bar they set for themselves.

I feel powerful because I post on /srg/.

All I have to do in a stream chat is mention I'm an /srg/ regular, and instantly, like a flick of the switch, people stop and pay attention to my words. From that point on, I become known as a dark, dangerous poster with an untold amount of cyber-weaponry at my disposal. People fear me, and I take full advantage of that fact.

Sometimes I wish I wasn't known across twitch as an ambassador of /srg/. Sometimes the pressure to uphold my reputation feels too great. But then I relax. I take deep breaths. And I remember how people freeze when I enter their stream chats. I remember how they grant me moderator privileges based on my name alone. I remember how they cower in fear, knowing that if they were to make one mistake, one misstep, there would be hell to pay.

And all is good in the world once more. My power restored.

Cheese has invested more time into doing offline practice than he has streaming or recording runs. This isn't a game where you can just spam attempts to become a top runner like Super Metroid. Top SM64 runners objectively put more effort into their game than anyone else.

There's a lot of factors that make a good speedrunner.

Time invested in the game is, obviously, an important one. Like with any hobby, investing a lot of time makes you better. But there's more to it than just investing a lot of time. What separates the good from the great is the efficiency of practicing, that practice to runs ratio and the general mindset during runs.

Practice has to be done efficiently. You can practice your speedgame for hours every single day and still not improve if your practice is not efficient. ZFG's pastebin summed it up pretty well, so I won't repeat him.

A good speedrun mindset is underrated. What I mean by that is that you don't let your emotions (like frustration because of some insignificant timeloss or nerves because you're on such a good pace) take control over your body, causing you to fail something that would otherwise be pretty easy. You might notice that the best speedrunners tend to be the people that are relatively relaxed when they PB.

Whoever thinks speedrunning is simply "invest tons of time => get WR" is probably a stream monster retard who hasn't ever done speedruns at a competitive level. There's a huge psychology aspect to it, and it isn't necessarily apparent to viewers, but it's definitely a pervasive, omnipresent factor when it comes to completing speedruns at a high level.

A game is input->output. Repeat. Each cycle of this costs 1 unit time.
A game also has a state. The game state is the memory. All of the variables.
One game state may be observed and agreed upon as the "start"
Another may be observed and agreed upon as the "end"
Measuring the number of input->output cycles that occur between the "start" and "end" is a speedrun.
The goal of a speedrun is to lower this as much as possible.

Some people are adverse to certain glitches because they feel that this system was hacked in some way to bypass "the meat" of the game.
In this case more categories are sometimes created, which involve altering the "end state" to include certain variables to be set to certain states (or prohibiting a certain state from being entered at all).
Categories may be difficult to hammer out sometimes because people disagree on which variables are important and which ones are unimportant.

Anyway, enough about category drama. This is about explaining what speedrunning really is when you want to be good at it.

A speedrun can be modeled as a group of input sequences that give different results in game state.
These game states are known fairly well, and thus also have a predicted time loss as a result of entering that state.
From this, you can measure the approximate time lost in each game state compared to the likely input of a smart player.

The best set up is to use Amarec for the video feed, into OBS with the plugin, then you can use OBS studio to set seperate audio tracks for mic and gameplay, then you can record with files that are not fucking gigantic with no gain.
